PC-98 designs are generic yet charming. Windows are soulful. Definitely better than the overdesigned/soulless anime designs you see in most otaku media today.

The designs are okay. People joke about silly hats but some characters like Mokou, the buddhists and the taoists are very nice desu.

They're pretty simple yet cute. I like it much better than characters with outfits that would take the whole day just to put on.

Maybe some of the hats tho are a bit ridiculous tho

ZUN may not be the best artist, but there's a reason these characters are so popular. They're good fucking designs: cute, memorable, distinct yet simple and easy to iterate on. If you say you don't like the character designs you're just trying to pass as a hipster. The characters have little going for them outside of their design

I love the smug faces and the head decorations.
Marisa's hat is my favorite.

This is a retarded meme. The only hats that ZUN completely made up are Keine's hat and Suwako's hat (which is just a normal straw hat except it has googly eyes). The rest are 100% real.

I typed the same three words in the same exact order before I read the thread. ZUN's designs are simply lovely for the reasons you've posted. I'll also add that many of them are attractive without being overtly sexualized and colorful but not garish. They're just, you know, so harmonious. ZUN is one of the few character designers I'd trust to magically redesign how I and everybody I know look.

To be fair, Spot Goes To Hollywood sucked it. It had the potential to be an exciting game, but simply controlling Spot didn't feel good at all. If you want something kind of like Spot Goes to Hollywood's shooting-heavy levels but better, play Suwako no Danmaku Pyonpyon Daisansaku.

I don't think ZUN overthinks his designs, but most of them are still effective enough to be very memorable.

Take Sakuya for example, her design is hardly unique (she's a rather generic meido design-wise), but she's very cool because knives and time stopping. It's kind of a shame that ZUN isn't really a good artist, but some characters get justice through the fighting games at least (and the fan art if you're into it).

This is probably one of the more interesting aspects of Touhou's designs. They're a good example of the ero-kawaii artstyle; most of the attraction just comes down to their youthfulness and clothing. Marisa wearing fingerless gloves being a prime candidate.
The uninitiated probably wouldn't think much in the way of sexualising the characters, with a few exceptions, yet there's more material on them than any other franchise. Though that also probably comes down in no small part to the size of the roster

If the original character designs have shit art, fan artists feel good about making "better" versions thus making a lot of fan art and attention which is why Kemono Friends saw similar popularity. Its a good strategy for the Japanese market.

PC 98 had the most "normal" designs, EOSD-POFV characters had the best clothes, the MOF-UFO characters have the best/most interesting abilities, TD-HSIFS have the best lore/backstory. Assuming only the integer games obviously.

Some designs are really good and appealing (Cirno, Patches, Youmu, Flandre), some are really ugly (the nasty-ass new cow, Nemuno) and some are straight up plagiarized (Sakuya, Ellen, Sariel).
