2. if i miss something, rewind and listen to the part again with my eyes closed to focus on the audio only
3. if i catch everything that second listen, move on.
4. if still don't catch everything, press S to show subs, and use yomichan to check any word that's new (mostly paying attention to the word's reading, but also glancing at the japanese definition to understand the new word in context), then listen to that part one more time
4. continue episode this way

i've done this for just 5 episodes of anime now and am already seeing dramatic improvement. i now see that japanese subs, although they are very helpful to a certain point and the way i'm using them now, having them on all the time long-term really does keep you from developing pure listening skill.

>why waste the time and add it to anki and spend hours in the future cumulatively reading the same shit
because 9 times out of 10 you will forget whatever you just encountered if you don't review, and rereading the sentence once, その場で, is not going to change that. that fuckin simple bro

if you enjoy forgetting, do what you do. some people want to remember the things they encounter. since that's kind of a required part of language acquisition

and stop acting braindead like people can only do one or the other. the person who just gets 10 new words every day and knows they will stick because he's reviewing them, is always going to be better off than the guy who's too lazy to review. the only exception i can think of is if the person already has a vocab of over 20,000 or so. and you know you are not that person.

your argument is basically a really long way of saying "i don't know enough japanese to consume large amounts of it or i don't actually care enough about japanese to do so but please take my advice" so i dunno why you're speaking so factually about something you don't actually experience
even if you follow ur own logic 10% is actually really good retention when you see everything in the top 15k once a week because that means ull naturally learn like 10k words in only like ten weeks
anki is for beginners who cant read that much without giving themselves brain damage and for intermediate/advanced learners who need to flesh out the 50k words that never appear outside of every day life irl in japan or academic materials they dont have

I recently discovered this was possible in MPV and I'm addicted to using that feature now (the reason is because the subs are already aligned to speech, so what you really gain is the ability to rewind to the beginning of things people say, which is awesome for listening practice).

300 minutes a day (lol you thought three hours was gonna cut it?) at 400 characters per minute for 7 days a week gives you 840000 characters of reading a week.
That's something like four full novels, more than enough that you should expect to see words in the top 15k around once a week.
In fact if you go dig up a frequency list like the BCCWJ and look at the 15000th most common word shows up about 3 times in every million words.

If you assume that words are on average around two characters long (this happens to be true) you should be able to finish the math yourself and figure out how many times per week on average you're going to run into the 15000th most common word. The answer MIGHT just surprise you. And make sure to show your work!

5 hours? i have a fucking life lol. not everyone is a neet antisocial loser like you.

>If you assume that words are on average around two characters long (this happens to be true)
no it's not. more like 4 if you include all kinds of words and not just 2文字熟語。particles and shit that are attached to words don't count as words by themselves either since they're so extremely common.

also you're forgetting to account for the time it takes to look up each of those words and consider their meaning long enough for it to not fly out of your memory completely within 2 seconds of closing the popup dictionary. and time for flipping pages/changing screens, looking at art etc etc. you're not straight up processing new text nonstop the entire time, even with that neet-level "reading time".

and finally, this should be obvious but, looking up a word one time in a week for a few seconds, among a sea of thousands and thousands of other words is NOT going to guarantee you will remember it. not even close. perhaps you will remember that you SAW it. that's it. you likely won't remember the meaning and unless the reading is very intuitive based common patterns from kanji you already know, then you definitely won't remember the reading either.

so this post was more exaggerated bullshit. if theres one thing yall are good at, it's bullshitting and being neets.

>5 hours? i have a fucking life lol. not everyone is a neet antisocial loser like you.
No, that's about right if you stop binging youtube, English TV, and bad English video games. Just convert enough of that stuff to Japanese and you can easily hit the 5 hour mark. It's that simple. Do things you'd do in English in Japanese instead. You can have your 3 hours of doing chores, English stuff, talking to friends, drinking, partying etc. if you want, but you're not going to get good at Japanese any time soon if you can't dedicate enough time to it.

Let me say that again. You're not going to get good at Japanese any time soon if you can't dedicate enough time to it.

Vocab isn't everything. You have millions of collocations, random grammar subtleties, word choice preferences, cultural references, mannerisms, etc. to learn and there's no way that you're going to get them in a reasonable amount of time with only a couple hours of reading and 10 minutes of Anki. Read more.

>>If you assume that words are on average around two characters long (this happens to be true)
>no it's not.
Actually it is.

>more like 4 if you include all kinds of words and not just 2文字熟語
Those are compound words. You don't need to look up or learn 操作方法 if you know 操作 and 方法. The tools that things like BCCWJ's analysis break words down into exclude trivial compound words, which both prevents frequency lists from being padded with duplicates (this means that the 15000th word is "more rare" than if they analyzed compounds) and also means that the average word length they're working with is consistent with the idea that you don't need to learn 操作方法 if you already know both halves.

>also you're forgetting to account for the time it takes to look up each of those words
That's why the reading speed I gave was 400 characters instead of 500 characters per minute. Funny how that works.

>and consider their meaning long enough for it to not fly out of your memory completely within 2 seconds of closing the popup dictionary
Sounds like you're a beginner. Lame.

>and finally, this should be obvious but, looking up a word one time in a week for a few seconds, among a sea of thousands and thousands of other words is NOT going to guarantee you will remember it.
It is both my experience and the experience of most of the people who I talk about Japanese media with that this is actually the case. It's very easy to learn words from reading if you don't try to rush it. The rate at which you learn a given word might seem slow but the throughput of new words as an intermediate is so high that the amount you learn is insane. If you're not learning words from reading then you don't read enough or you're a beginner.

>you likely won't remember the meaning and unless the reading is very intuitive based common patterns from kanji you already know
If you're good enough at Japanese to read at 400CPM and it's hard for you to remember what words mean based on their kanji and probably reading then there's something wrong with you.

>so this post was more exaggerated bullshit.
Your entire argument is just "I'm bad at learning from reading for unspecified reasons that are definitely not the fact that I'm a beginner trying to talk shit about how the big boys learn". If anything here is being exaggerated, it's your authority on this subject.

as far as number of new words you'll actually REMEMBER the meaning and reading of the next time you see them, it's likely. particularly if you're smart about what you add and don't add things that are 当たり前 in relation to things you already know.

the only words that should be left to reading only are the ones that contain only kanji you know already, and who's meanings and readings make sense based on the kanji.

There are analysis that exclude particles and they too average out to about two characters per word. You can verify this yourself by taking BCCWJ and running the numbers before and after excluding particles.

>i haven't taken the jcat and i'm not going to go out of my way to take it now to prove shit to a neet who's lifestyle is completely different from mine.
Very well. I'll give you an opportunity to win this argument for free. If you can translate the following text (the beginning of the prologue of Mushoku Tensei, a very popular web novel) without making any major errors, I will concede the entire argument to you on account of putting your money where your mouth is.

If you refuse, then that's equivalent to admitting defeat, because translating a dozen lines of text should be trivial for someone who can live their life in Japanese, so I will assume that you're lying, due to refusing to do something that should take no effort and would result in an instant victory.

If you translate it and make too many mistakes, though, I'll point and laugh at you so hard that you probably won't be able to sleep well tonight, and that'll be that.

After a certain point, reading speed is somewhat unrelated to someone's actual ability in the language. Someone who misunderstands a lot and can't speak in grammarical Japanese can read faster than a native who does the bare minimum of reading that they can to get by. He mastered the art of getting people to bring him what he wanted or do things he wanted by making loud noises. This is a very common stereotyped hikikomori behavior. >almost everyone sucks ass
compared to what, honestly?
not everyone has the goal of matching a native's ability in every way
some people literally just want to watch anime and play games and shit. that's it.
compared to someone who can't do any of that without looking up stuff every sentence, high intermediates with a comprehension rate of 98% or more are pretty dam good. not saying everyone in this thread is even at that level. maybe like 5 or 6 people who come here are.

still, nothing wrong with aiming for that if it fits your needs, even if it's low compared to a native. people have different goals and desires in life, quiz.

>> No.21571042

actually even if 5 or 6 people here are above the level i described it would still mean most of them suck. but i know that your standards are much higher than that anyway so in your view only 1 person who comes here doesn't suck and that's the native guy who always types in hiragana

I actually only spend an hour or so a day on Japanese on average, this entire conversation has been a charade leading up to you trying to put yourself in the victim's shoes as a poor learner who can't possibly try to keep up with the VETERAN HIKIKOMORI NIHONGO NEET when in reality you somehow manage to spend more time on Japanese than me and come out with more holes in your knowledge, despite the fact that I don't use Anki and you do.

Just like you're saying, I'm an insufferable piece of shit and want to shit on people who are worse at Japanese than me, but the reason is very much different than the fact I dedicated so much of my life to Japanese, because I haven't. The reason is that this place is full of beginners and eternal dekinais obsessed with all the tiny details of how to spend their time with the language, how much time to spend on Anki, how much time to spend reading, how you need to use Anki period, how it'll cripple your nihongo, how their Anki cards should be formatted, or whether they should read VNs or LNs, whether anime is effective learning or mining material, ad infinatum.

And don't get me started about people parroting e-celebs.

So spending about an hour a day on Japanese on average, then laying the translation corrections on you, am I some kind of savant lording his superior learning speed over others? Nah. What really counts is, as Jamal puts it, "quality language time". My participation in this argument has been building up to hammering down on this very point, starting all the way back when I insisted that it's actually very easy to retain things without memorizing them back when I was lowercase posting as bait.

If my average one hour a day of maximum-quality maximum-pleasure smooth-sailing reading and listening in Japanese results in better gains than you, how on earth can you justify NOT talking about the importance of quality? Sure, go ahead, add Anki or extra reading hours on if you want, but you need to have a high quality floor or you're handicapping yourself. You need to internalize what you're reading.

Aim for deep, high-level comprehension, spanning entire paragraphs or scenes. What's going on? Why are things happening the way they are? Why does this grammar pattern feel so different from this other grammar pattern? How would I have written this instead, and what does that say about the text or my ability in the language? Your brain should be asking itself all sorts of question in the background, subconsciously, as you read or listen to Japanese, just like it does when you do so in a language you're good at. Your points about instantly forgetting things you just looked up indicate that you haven't managed to make this happen yet. This is vital to language learning. Oh, and this doesn't affect reading speed.

Lower your affective filter. Develop habits that let you learn more efficiently without using Anki as a crutch. You're capable of retaining much more language knowledge than you tell yourself you're capable of retaining. Just like I said at the very beginning, it's actually very, very easy to retain things that you acquire naturally. You just have to process things at a deeper level than cranking over sequences of words.

I'd say how many years I've been learning (it's not a lot, at least) but the fact is that if you've spent much less than me you don't have a place giving advice or arguing about what learners should do, and if you spent much more than me then oh boy you should reread everything I just wrote again because you need it.

>>21570929
I was going to reply to this with a nice and easy "yeah I probably should have explained it how he didn't understand the situation until it was too late and his family already had ammo to use against him, rather than going out of my way to say that he was completely ignorant until the moment they barged into his room" until
>気付いたら is often more of a "before i had fully grasped the situation" rather than a literal absence of knowledge.
which is an idea that you're taking way too far. If you read the sentence from left to right you see a clear progression of retrospection from "this is where I am right now" to "I didn't know" and finally "they took advantage of me (this is how they did it)". He was clearly ignorant of what was going on at each stage of his retrospection, right down to "they pretended I didn't exist, they didn't keep me in the know, I didn't know what was going on" aspect. It may be possible to read it as saying he was ignoring it all but still knew, but doing so would make the writing disjointed. The narrator is trying to downplay how fucked up he was and demonize his family.

Incidentally, it turns out that someone asked about this very passage on hinative before, so you don't have to just take my word for it: https://hinative.com/ja/questions/671708

Eh, he certainly depicts his family as doing lots of bad shit but there's also plenty of text in there that acknowledges that he was fairly fucked up too.

I was going to argue this more, but I guess ハマり means almost exactly that he was deliberately tricked (as opposed to my original, probably mistaken interpretation that they could theoretically just have voted to kick his dumb NEET ass out because he failed to show up instead of engineering the situation that way) so I give.

i decided to read this because my curiosity got the best of me (mad at myself), but i can't get past the irritation that you assumed i haven't understood or processed any of the 60+ books, raw manga volumes, videogame text, web articles etc I've read in Japanese on a "deep level". that's annoying. i have processed, enjoyed, resonated with, been moved by, laughed at etc, at least 1,000 hours of japanese media at this point. having holes in my knowledge isn't evidence against that -- it's just evidence that i'm still fucking learning, which i've said a million times now. you're condescending attitude feels like nails against a chalkboard. and your claim that you only spend 1 hour a day reeks of bullshit. people love to pretend they've been studying way less than they have.

i'll tell you how long i've been learning from input. about 3 years. and i'm not ashamed to say that a significant amount of those days were not spent on any japanese because i was distracted by other aspects of my life. but given the amount of effort i've put in, i'm in a pretty damn good place, especially since i can comfortably communicate too. and i'm not going to let some smartass on the internet with a superiority complex convince me otherwise.

i have dabbled with no-anki for months at a time, and my gains felt negligible at best. coming back to anki always resulted in significantly more retention of new words and less forgetting for me. that is why i keep coming back to it.

It took me 20 minutes to do my 175 reviews cause im slow af. not sure what to do since i dont want to lower my new cards cause i slacked hard on my vocab and am way behind where i should be. it's not even a time issue since i have all day free atm so even if i have to do 1 hour of reviews i can still get my 2 hours of reading in, it's just tedious. but it's very effective for me personally in terms of the carry over to reading so ye

im happy the quality language time thing stuck with somebody out there esp since i havent said that in a long time i dont think

i like the emphasis on critical thinking but i think u should be just as free spirited with that as u would ideally be in looking up words u dont know

as far as time goes yea in the early going yea i prolly only spent an hour or 2 a day watching anime and then listened to music while doing other things so definitely all low quality nihongo time but after many hours possibly 10000 when i started to employ the old noggin thats when the big leaps started to happen cuz somehow i knew stuff i could react to stuff with words and phrases i didnt know i knew and i could even predict the next line a hentai game etc basically the best way to explain it is i was a baby chick bustin out the egg

but that all happened without even trying really i didnt have to "test" myself or try to internalize it was always just a series of a-ha moments but anyway the more i was able to think the more i came to know in the moment like how わたしはゲイ

it using not only for climbing road/position/height(mountaineering terms), just one of old scale/unit/rate(合 ごう).
目 as mark,sign,position, not eye(s).

In climbing journey, 1合 means about 1/10 time rate,
1合目 is first 1/10 fr the bottom.

We dont use the 10合目 = 山頂 or 頂上 usual.
頂 means peak, top

合 is used only in the amount of 米 (mainly ごはん茶碗、炊飯器) except 山 in modern Japanese.
although 合 as a unit of area, it is not used already.

this "合目" as a mountain climbing is often used for the progress of work such as time-consuming work, but it is not used so much now.
頂上 = success, done, finish, complete

no they don't. they only make clear problems with my TRANSLATION abilities. translating and re-arranging japanese grammar to english is awkward, sometimes in order to make the sentence sound more natural some things are just skipped entirely, especially if someone is rushing. even the first guy who "corrected" me didn't post any actual replacement translations, only long-winded explanations of what was going on. that should show how squeezing out an english translation that fits the japanese perfectly is mendokusai and a separate skill on its own that even the original dickhead who asked me to do it, didn't feel like doing.

The problem with learning French as an English speaker is precisely that:
it's so similar to English that actually mentally marking the difference between French and English is much more difficult, which is why you're more likely to be misguided by false friends and similar-sounding words.
If you've never learnt any languages with grammatical gender, it will probably be somewhat challenging to have to memorize every single noun along with its respective gender.

godspeed bro. I recommend the FSI courses and classic assimil, to be found here:
https://fsi-languages.yojik.eu/languages/fsi.html
remember that orality is primary, and especially with French, you can get fucked over by focusing too much on literacy early. the orthography is more consistent than english but deceptively familiar: "ou" is almost always [u] and "u" is almost always [y], this being the biggest culprit. Nail the [u]/[y] distinction early.
I still have the old (fifties) assimil on my old computer, which gets you to authentic literature in about sixty lessons. I'll upload it later tonight if you'd like.

it is acquired but much more slowly than anything else because it's tied to comprehension so much less than anything lexical or grammatical
young children start out by picking up on accent patterns because they don't have frameworks for lexical or grammatical acquisition yet, accent patterns are basically all they can hear

Combination Hypotheses

Two weak forms of the Comprehension Hypothesis have been discussed, or assumed.

Weak version 1: Comprehension is necessary but not sufficient. Without formal teaching and/or comprehensible output, the acquirer will not reach the highest levels of competence.

I think the evidence is consistent with this version, but only in the sense that supplements can add competence of a different kind, consciously learned knowledge of language. As argued above and in previous publications, there are limits on how much language can be consciously learned and limits on its application. Nevertheless, consciously learned language can have value. Consciously learned rules of grammar can be used to edit output when the conditions for Monitor use are met, which occurs during the editing stage of the composing process. Conscious knowledge of a few basic rules of phonics can, at times, help make texts more comprehensible for beginning readers. Occasional explanation of an unknown vocabulary word or grammatical rule can occasionally serve to make input more comprehensible, whether or not it contributes to the acquisition of the item.

Weak version 2: Acquisition is slow. Conscious learning and/or output can speed up the acquisition process.

There is no evidence for this view. Direct comparisons of acquisition-based methods and methods based on rivals consistently show acquisition-based methods to be better, that is, faster. Of course, it is possible that some optimal mix of acquisition and learning will prove to be best, but so far this has not been the case. Adding output and correction, in fact, has been shown to make progress less efficient, not more (Mason, 2004).

It is by now well-established that input must be comprehensible to have an effect on language acquisition and literacy development. To make sure that language acquirers pay attention to the input, it should be interesting. But interest may be not enough for optimal language acquisition. It may be the case that input needs to be not just interesting but compelling.

Compelling means that the input is so interesting you forget that it is in another language. It means you are in a state of "flow" (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990). In flow, the concerns of everyday life and even the sense of self disappear -our sense of time is altered and nothing but the activity itself seems to matter. Flow occurs during reading when readers are "lost in the book" (Nell, 1988) or in the "Reading Zone" (Atwell, 2007).

Compelling input appears to eliminate the need for motivation, a conscious desire to improve. When you get compelling input, you acquire whether you are interested in improving or not.

The evidence for the Compelling Input Hypothesis includes improvement as an unexpected result, the many cases of those who had no conscious intention of improving in another language or increasing their literacy, but simply got very interested in reading. In fact, they were sometimes surprised that they had improved.

The Compelling Input Hypothesis also explains why self-selected reading is typically more effective than assigned reading (e.g. S.Y. Lee, 2007).An important conjecture is that listening to or reading compelling stories, watching compelling movies and having conversations with truly fascinating people is not simply another route, another option. It is possible that compelling input is not just optimal: It may be only way we truly acquire language.

What about second language aquisition for tonal languages, where tones would be tied to comprension? I've heard that the Chinese focus on tones and not the pinyin however for foreigners some of them may be attuned to listening to the pinyin instead. How would the brain start to pick up those sounds and actually start focusing on the tones and not just learn the entire language in context as a learner?
