Both. Ruskies and historical ships should be used for Hoppou sisters so sanshiki, and 2xred with WG42 / tanks should be enough. Tanks should be on main fleet but don't overdo it, you need some sanshiki for henderson.

The best setup I've found is Tama+a tank DD in the main fleet. They should both have a landing craft/tank/wurf combo. In the escort fleet, your CL should have an anti-installation double attack setup, and you should have at least Nachi+Ashigara+a fast BB with sanshiki. These 3 can kill littler Hoppou if she's alone, but it's the job of the girls in the main fleet and the friend fleet to clear out the other installations. Don't bring commies because they tend to choke and they block every decent friend fleet.

If you think it was a chore back I don't think it'll be better now since event maps are bigger with multiple phases and having to unlock part of the map or debuffing the boss. There's more shiplocking and certain ships have bonuses in certain maps so you have to be more careful with planning and such. Since you were gone that long you're also missing all the good land base stuff, a lot of blueprints, etc.

Still, you could just try it anyway for a bit and if you do it events on low difficulty you can ignore most of the shit I mentioned.

I unironically agree with every part but the drop rates. This was one of the better events. None of the maps were bullshit difficult; it always felt like it was only a matter of time. It required a variety of compositions without much overlap between maps, and gave great rewards. Friend fleets also give a good crutch to struggling players, and while they came in late, they were still around for about 3 weeks. The complaining mostly comes from people who either really need to get over their hangups about dropping the difficulty, or are trapped in the Fletcher mines.
