Learning Kanji without radicals is like learning English words without letters. That being said, learning Kanji with radicals still isn't easy. It will feel like an unreasonable uphill battle for a long time until one day you chance at a text and realize you can actually read it. Who knew!
Maybe look into some 漢文 once your general language skills improve. That's what really cemented Kanji for me.

It's not an exact analogue, but then we don't read English words by reading letter by letter and sounding them out: we generally tend to recognize the whole word's shape at once, which is why we can read as fast as we do, why we can sometimes recognize words with a misplaced letter or the letters out of order, and also why a bad typeface can throw us off so much. Kanji and radicals are similar, and of course the most common writing mistakes are displacements or exchanges of radicals. If one were so-inclined, it might be possible to learn a good few English words before learning the letters just by focusing on the shape, but wouldn't that be a doomed battle too?

Nearing the end of the third season of Yuru Yuri. Went from 40 minutes per episode to 35 to around 30-25 on average now depending on the amount of vocab I have to add. Barely have to pause for any other reason like not getting the grammar etc. Feels kinda good.

You kow what 心, 立, 田, 土 all mean on their own If you take 土 around the 田, you can imagine there being a 里 (village - さと).
What is 立'd in the 里 is a 童 (child).
The 童 for whom a 心 is passionately devoted is what is 憧'd (あこがれた - yearned for).
Repeat this process about 2000 times and you'll know all of the basic kanji. It really shouldn't take too long to get through it.

Radicals do relate quite a bit to meaning and pronunciation. Single radicals can classify characters, hence that most characters with 艹 in them will be related to plants.
As for sound, look at the on'yomi of 精請情清青鯖蜻睛菁. The correspondence is yet clearer in Chinese as opposed to the phonetically impoverished Japanese.

The problem with kanji and radicals is that there have been many rounds of simplification throughout the centuries.
The example I can most easily think of is 國, which has 或 (territory) inside of it. In Simplified Chinese and Japanese, this character appears as 国. The relationship between 或 (territory) and 國 (country) is pretty obvious, but the relationship between 玉 (gem/ball) and 国 is not so obvious, unless you think of 国 as the king's 玉.
What you actually see being used in writing are not the radicals themselves, but rather the words that are made up of kanji, that are made up of radicals.
The point of learning kanji by their radicals is to know how to tell similar looking kanji apart, and how to write them, not to actually intuitively know the meaning and pronunciation of any kanji.

you can use mnemonics while studying vocab cards as well if that helps you remember better. it's normal to have issues remembering kanji at the start because it's foreign to you. as you learn more and more it gets easier because the same kanji appear in many words and because you'll start actually seeing the words in context which makes it stick.

i personally dont believe in the "just read even if you have 0 vocab". 500-1000 words will make it a bit easier although it'll still be hard at the start but it's up to you how you chose to go about it.

just remember 1 thing: anki/flashcards are a supplementary tool and as such, your stats don't really matter. never focus on your retention rate too much and lose sight of what you're actually doing.
