Any kanji can be read as anything when you put it in a place/person name. Even nips can't be sure what the reading for a place name is unless they know it/it's a notable city/etc.

I downloaded a couple of kanji apps
A lot of kanji I seem to pick up instantly or words, because they "feel" right, like they resemble the thing they mean in an abstract way
Im a complete beginner but I know maybe 20 kanji and words from artistic tags

but it feels wrong to learn it this way, since that doesnt always work

do you just have to remember all these symbols? Largely without structure? because some words are made of seemingly random symbols, while others are puns (ie, loli is constructed of knife-opening)

download anki and do core6k or the audio tango decks and learn them in Anki
there is overlap between certain phonetic elements and kanji that let you predict on readings for a lot of kanji
and there is certain semantic overlap where different kanji have the same kun reading

The key to using a vocab deck as a beginner is to remind yourself that you're not actually learning the words, you're building a mental dictionary so that you don't have to engage in pointless dictionary lookups on incredibly common stuff. You learn what words ACTUALLY mean, what situations they're used in, etc. from exposure.

Aside from that, you want something that's very simple and has a format like:

front: kanji
back: reading, meaning, additional information

And you test yourself on whether you remember the *idea* of what's on the back. Don't fail a card because the back says "staircase" and you thought "stairs". Heck, don't fail a card because it says "cleaver" on the back and you thought "fat kitchen knife". Words don't work that way.

Don't use a deck with sentences, readings, or audio on the front. They make your reps take longer for no good reason and they're basically "cheats" that make it easier to remember the back of the card without having to build a good mental dictionary entry for that word.

You also DON'T want decks that place readings and definitions on separate cards. You want them on the same card. If they're on separate cards then you have to literally rep through a greater number of cards for less actual vocabulary, and you have to think about which thing you want to remember from the back of the card too, or just remember it all, in which case you should just have both things on the back. Silly.

Finally, you want a deck that's short and ordered by frequency. Shared decks suck, universally, because they're not what YOU need to learn RIGHT NOW. You want to switch to "mining" ASAP. If it's not ordered by frequency, then that means that when you drop it and start mining, you're going to need to mine a ton of very common words that the shared deck didn't get to yet. And if it's long then you might not ever switch to mining at all.

How to optimize Japanese Language Learning while staying in Japan for 3-4+ weeks?

Hey all,

Sorry if something similar has been posted previously, I did a brief search and didn't find anything.

Background story: I've been learning Japanese for a couple years now, on and off, and at best I'd say I'm at a lower-intermediate level (got through 3/4 of Genki, got through roughly 1000 kanji (vocabulary a different issue though LOL)). I went to Japan last year with 2 of my friends for a week but it was mostly for fun and it wasn't about learning the language.

I've been planning to go back to Japan since coming home last year, but I'm realizing I want the trip to be strongly focused on language acquisition and not so much on travelling. How can I best optimize this? I've heard of Host Families, Volunteering, and finding a Language Exchange partner (through conversationexchange) are good ways, but frankly I don't know too much about any of these or other options. Any help at all would be extremely appreciated! ありがとうございました!

Seems weird. Sentence patterns tend to repeat quite a bit. Even if it takes you a couple of dozen different examples, after a while it should just click and then you don't even have to think twice.

i just had a 30 minute conversation (in japanese) over lunch with the school librarian about how if every kid in english class was given a tablet they could use this 無料なアプリ called anki which uses a とっても効率的な間隔復習システム, they'd learn english 20 times faster than they are now with the really crappy and slow textbooks and we could even do things like watch english movies in class and farm words and sentences from them
