Buy your books, Anon.
But if you are deadset on it you can try libgen or the azw format book dumps (there's one in the cornucopia with books that aren't otherwise on there and another on the MIA resources page.) Other than that you can try perfect dark (or whatever Japanese pirates use now) or brave the hellscape that is chinese pirate sites.

>keep the new cards low so it doesnt get overwhelming
You can do 50 cards/day in 35 minutes and that includes repping the new cards. You just need 85%+ retention, 90 day dead point, 30% failure penalty, no ease factor decreases, and average 5 seconds per rep. The same settings with 60 minutes per day supports 85 new cards per day.
Anki is great the problem is everyone reps slow as fuck, takes forever to make their cards, makes bad cards, doesn’t remove ease factor or have a death point or reduce failure penalty.

When I was a kid and watched Dragon Ball on TV there was this scene where they blew up Boo but he turned into jelly regenerating again and that scene was extremely padded out showing everyone’s reactions and faces just looking at the goo regenerating and what I didn’t understand as a kid was that the sole purpose of that was to build suspense. Instead I got mad and internally screamed at the characters to not just stand there like frozen in place and attack the goo stopping him from regenerating but of course that didn’t happen and when everyone was fucking shocked he regenerated I just turned off the TV and played outside because that shit was too stupid for even the little shitter I was.

the sooner you stop thinking of it in english terms the more sense it will make. of course "I think I am doubtful" makes no sense. it's the adverbial form of doubtful so it modifies the thought, the thought does not modify the word. it's more like " I have doubtful thoughts". which roughly translates to suspicion.

just saying it shouldn't be this difficult for these people to understand you're not supposed to try to translate words or grammar to another language

it's not a "chair" it's an object that has 4 legs and exists for the purpose of people sitting on it
you can visualize it even if you didn't know a single word in any language
words and grammar represent concepts and your inability to let go of words you can read and say is why you're a literal caveman

you're on the level of a baby that thinks he's hiding from other people when he covers his eyes and can't see the world himself
languages aren't like math so anyone can learn them brute force, some people just don't get it intuitively and they waste others valuable time and patience by posting the same dumb questions some other new year's resolution/spring break/summer tourist asked the previous day. they're all going to flunk out of the djt academy sooner or later

don't ask me what's the difference between two words that have the same english translation, go read a j-j dictionary and if you can't read a j-j dictionary then shut the fuck up it's not important to you at this point go read more sentences you can understand

you probably shouldn't be reading anything where a single sentence is this damn important for overall comprehension
you'll literally always get more benefit by reading more sentences than getting stuck on one for the amount of time you could have read 5 more pages in

anything you read that's written for natives i.e. not a graded reader or genki or something will have something you won't understand when you're just getting into reading

books for grade school native children will have easy vocabulary and themes but suddenly some character will say something (you) can't grasp right now and that's fine. move on.

It really just depends on what you want to watch in anime.
I remember I used to think that the only good anime were stuff like Texhnolyze, Utena, Evangelion, and Lain, and that everything else was just stuff to waste time with, but I slowly grew fond of slice of life anime, and ended up watching several hundreds of single-cour SOL anime.
After that, I became kind of interested in learning Japanese, and just kept on watching random anime for the sake of picking up Japanese words. Ever since I've learnt some kanji, and gotten into reading visual novels and light novels, I haven't really been watching much anime at all.

i don't know if you're referencing me but when i bitch about my "listening skill", i mean i know roughly the 3k most common words in the language while reading (and other random words) but can't really catch them while listening. so to me that's pretty much a listening skill that needs to be developed. i have to develop a familiarity with them spoken that reading alone hasn't given me.

my conclusion after doing over 200 anime cards now is that quiz master is right, they are extremely effective for deeply nailing down new vocab and much more enjoyable to review than regular word cards or even regular sentence cards

but they do take more time to make and for that reason i'd personally recommend doing just 10 or so new cards a day rather than 20 or 30.

Audio on front (nothing but audio on front and sentence+definition on back) sentence cards are the way to go. Subs2srs gives you needed audio and snapshot with one click and morphman will give you the best vocabulary for you, especially with a priority list. They also train your listening skills the most out of any format and give you a nice guideline for your pace with the audio length.

Yoga (or someone else, I heard it from some nukemarine follower) is making an addon to auto generate definitions. This would make making the cards go from easy to trivial. Even though Yoga is a buffoon he does make some useful material.

It's not worth reading novels if you are extremely limited. Just read SoL manga for a while and don't be afraid to not lookup words that you don't understand. You want to keep a nice flow going and not overwhelm yourself with tons of lookups. The ability to easily use yomichan for novels is actually a potential downfall for beginners because it makes it very easy to just look up every word (including the ones you know) instead of pushing through.

if ur such a complete fuckin beginner its more important for u to get a grasp on sentence structure than worry about how effectively ur pickin up words anyway
ur not complainin about furigana is it really worse if the definition is also ez to get

>relatively beginner friendly novels
How beginner-friendly are we talking about?
Have you gotten through vncore1250/core2k? Do you know the N5-N3 level kanji? Have you at least read tae kim's guide? What have you tried reading so far?
Even to read some of the easiest light novels out there, like おにあい or とらドラ, you still gotta know more than several thousands of words and over a thousand kanji.
Yomichan or rikaisama can help you with looking up any unknown terms, but it might still be quite bothersome to look up one in every three words.
If you can at least read よつばと! relatively easily, I'd say you'd've certainly made a bit of progress.
Then again, there's a huge gap between relatively easy manga, like あずまんが大王 and any light novel or visual novel out there.
Hell, the gap between depending on furigana and actually knowing more than a few basic kanji becomes pretty noticeable once you try reading anything that isn't meant for children.
Now, I'm not claiming you shouldn't try reading novels (as a matter of fact, you really can't get used to reading prose except by reading prose), but you should probably try starting out with something that you can actually handle before trying to grapple a bit of hard stuff.
https://djtguide.neocities.org/reading%20list.html
I suggest you to look for something you like, and flip through the first few pages to see if it wouldn't be too cumbersome of a read.

>if you’re not testing for meaning you might as well just not do anki
The point of anki should be to reinforce whatever you're weak at.
If you what おこる means, but you don't know that it's spelt as 怒る, then you can try doing that.
On the other hand, if you know what 種 means, but you don't you how to pronounce it, you can make a card that's got 種 - たね.
If you don't know how to relate a word's meaning to either its spelling in kanji or its pronunciation, then you gotta go through all three of them together in the same card.

there is nothing wrong with grammar guides (or dictionaries) they are RESOURCES, just don't make the mistake of making them your primary study material or you will just be confused and annoyed!!!
make your COMPELLING INPUT primary, and refer to resources like grammar guides as you encounter new things in context (making sentence cards if you choose, at your level it would probably be very helpful).
you will slowly increase your grammar knowledge that way. there is NO NEED to try and frontload everything via a grammar guide! it's no different than trying to frontload vocab from a dictionary (very poor strategy) rather than just reading and referring to the dictionary as needed.

it’s not bullshit or shitpost fodder, you have mental problems if you think anime cards are anything less than a potentially more entertaining way to learn vocab. literally just a clip of input pasted on a card to help with context.

i don’t know why some of you psychos need to make an enemy out of everything. if you don’t want to use them then just talk about something else instead of being a dickhead for literally NO reason

i'm being a dickhead because i am one, that's a reason. you in particular (i'd venture a guess you're the """"female"""" poster) get buttblasted every time so i'll keep it up for the (you)s

imagine being in a french language forum and someone says “put screenshots and audio from your favorite french dramas to aid your vocab and listening!” and someone responded like “YOURE FUCKING RETARDED THAT SHIT DOESNT WORK GET OUT WITH THESE BULLSHIT TRENDS”

people would clearly think that person was psychotic. only on japanese learning forums is such emotionally unhinged behavior so commonplace. or maybe it’s just 4chan.

I constantly find myself losing momentum time and time again when studying to get past N5. Whatever the excuse, the info I learn online never sticks. So here is what I have done. Hopefully it can work as well for you as it is currently for me.

Post sticky notes on objects around the house with its respective name or anything else that stimulates your learning.

Similar to how social media platforms fight for our precious time (called millisecond marketing), as well as incorporating the language immersion theory, I surround myself with as many mental triggers (sticky notes) to stimulate thought processes directed towards learning Japanese.

For example, I look at the sticky on the fridge while eating breakfast and then attempt to make a sentence. The important thing to highlight here is I am now thinking about Japanese more often, subconsciously strengthening my memory and progressing faster with my studies without having to allocate more study time out of my already busy life. My mind is now working for ME and not scrolling through some feed. Except for this thread of course :)

みなさん, がんばって!
