How to ACTUALLY learn Japanese:
1. Do Japanese stuff
2. Use Japanese words to describe everything (for example, instead of talking about a suspicious person, talk about an 怪しい人, and instead of satying clouds are fluffy-looking, say 雲はふわふわ枕見たいです)
3. Masturbate to eroge, h-manga, etc. Bonus points for saying 行くうううう instead of "I'm about to cum!"

why? it is literally in our DNA to gossip about higher-status individuals. it gives us an idea of how to leverage their status to increase or avoid destroying our own.

sure, in the age of the internet and TV the leverage is nonexistent, but the biological drive is still there. i think you should respect my desire to gossip.

daily reminder that you do not have to finish anything you don't want to finish to keep improving in the language.

you could literally read only two chapters of 30 different books and manga and still improve as if you read 5~6 full books (if not moreso since you're getting exposed to a wider variety of material). some people here try to act like because someone didn't finish x VN or something their japanese isn't good/isn't improving? but that's total bullshit lol. what matters is the collective number of meaningful sentences consumed in context regardless of source, the order in which you encounter chunks of language is completely arbitrary in the long run.

Actual proficiency in a second language past adolescence is vanishingly rare and that's just a fact. Among biologists it's even more a foregone conclusion. A bird or insect that doesn't learn to fly early rarely learns at all. The severity of the critical period isn't clear, but it does exist.
What is clear is that social pressure is the major driver of language acquisition, and none of you will ever have that, since Japanese isn't socially valued, and even in Japan, brazen English speaking foreigners are preferred to anime loving weebs speaking Japanese.

is this discrepancy caused by the fact that a lot of words that would be ranked more frequent are compounds and advanced learners wouldn't bother mining a lot of those compounds? so their 20k-30k mined words would consist of a lot of non-compounds which would be typically ranked like 50k+?

Isolated phrases do not a language make. I'm glad that you brought up "oh no," actually, because fully formed fixed phrases can and will be picked up from everywhere. This is one way that pidgins are formed. It's a very long way from there, however, to pragmatic knowledge, which is the necessary and sufficient condition for really knowing a language.

you can acquire it naturally, it will just take a shitload of more time without any supplementation whatsoever.
the supplementation doesn't have to be a shit ton, just enough to get a steady flow of guaranteed information entering and staying in your brain
outside of that ~10 to 20 minute per day investment you can just enjoy japanese things
its really not a big deal to do small supplementation people just get into all or nothing mentality (1000 new vocab cards per month or else!) and that's what burns them out and fucks them up

I think you must be the one with the broken brain if you can't distinguish between conscious motivations and environmental pressures. Anyone else here who speaks English as a second language, like I do, should get it. Being in a real social situation where people expect nothing less than perfect just as a matter of fact, as all native English speakers do, makes a world of difference from being treated like a white god for saying a single word, as is the case with most Asian languages.

no it's not. that has nothing to do with it.
your brain literally makes stronger neural networks based on what it sees more frequently. if you see something once, and don't see it again for months because you never reviewed it or happened to encounter it soon enough, your brain will likely just delete that connection, or keep it in an extremely vague recess of your mind which won't allow you to recall it the next time you do see it

the only exceptions are if the word was encountered in a VERY memorable context that made it stick out significantly more than others, or if it's already very similar to some words you already know. for words that don't fit into those two categories though, SRS is clearly going to create stronger networks.
