It's extremely hard to get from "I know fairly well a language" to "I've mastered every single aspect of it and know most of the slang the natives use"
A good example is French, my mother tongue. Of course you could speak very well after several years and know many tenses like futur simple, passé antérieur, conditionnel passé, etc. but when you start talking about subjonctif passé, futur antérieur... most non-natives start scratching their heads as they have a hard time wrapping them about those concepts and why the conjugation is so mind-numbingly complex.
It's like with every thing: you learn easy stuff at first, and then, the deeper you go, the harder things become.

no one has mastered every single aspect of any language though as a native english speaker there are still things i skip/ignore/couldn't be bothered trying to figure out. they're just much rarer now.

Those cards have pretty much no advantage over normal anime cards, are more of a pain in the ass, can't be phone reviewed, you need to press the play button to play the video every time etc. but the guy keeps spamming the 1 card he made like it means anything when I've actually shown anime cards work by making over 10000 of them
it just looks cool one time but these are actual gimmick cards while anime cards are a deeply thought through concept and optimized to be as close to perfection as possible
so far everyone who tried to improve on anime cards failed because they didn't understand them in the first place

yes my cards have visual context
whether it moves or not isn't important because if you watched the show and hear the audio you'll be able to picture the situation perfectly
besides the animation isn't the important thing but what is actually being said, the part of the language that you want to learn from
it's no advantages with a lot of disadvantages and if you want to bring the argument anime cards are hard to make then this is just even harder for no reason
so stop spamming your gay cards like they are in any way a replacement for real anime cards lol
you probably don't even make them yourself just made 1 card to spam DJT with

I deleted my deck because normal vocab cards are better. I said that normal vocab cards were better in the original argument you had with me where I first posted this. Oh yeah, I realized that Ankiweb never actually deleted my old video media for some reason before I disabled media sync, so I have something resembling proof. I'm pretty sure I can't download the media alone (remember, no more cards associated with this media!) because of how anki and ankiweb work, and I'm not interested in expending the effort to find a way to get the media off of it. Even if I did, there's no more card data associated with it, so it would be pointless. About equivalent to me taking random clips from anime and claiming that they're from anime cards that I long-since deleted.

This number works out to having made about 100 or 200 cards with my old video encoding settings before disabling media sync, and I disabled it after a month or so of using the format, and I used it for seven months.

so since i've switched to primarily anime cards, i just keep mining from the anime till i reach 30 cards. then i either keep watching but not mining anything, or go do something else (and still not mine anything). basically just set a daily limit and stop mining once it's reached. don't forbid yourself from continuing to get input though. for the rest of your input for the day just look stuff up without adding. letting stuff pile up will most likely fuck you up.

also i personally don't mine uncommon shit. just stuff i don't know yet that seems like it may come in handy later. i'm not mining "paramecium" for example.

i timed myself and the whole process of making a card, from pausing the anime ep to continuing it, takes 30 seconds on average. this is to get a card complete with the vocab word, reading, screenshot from anime, audio clip from the anime, and definition. not bad since i just started. will probably get faster as i get used to it.

He just needs to stop fucking up the site layout in retarded ways and refusing to accept any criticism when people try to tell him that he's just made it harder to use yet again with each revision.

Why can't he just use a nice, simple layout like the original? Why did convert half the site to Japanese when it's aimed at beginner learners making it so that now they keep coming here asking where shit is because they can't read コルヌコピア, and also because the sections he chooses to put stuff under is just baffling (Why is the CoR, full of Anki decks, in the fucking Library section? Are Anki decks books? Why are the Sakubi, Boiro, etc. grammar guides not located in the fucking Grammar Guides section?).

His design decisions are just utterly baffling and confusing and he refuses to accept any criticism about them just telling anyone who complains that they're mentally ill.

ok, the audio is not optional. that is not what i meant. what i meant is that you listen to the audio once when it's new and from then on only when you fail it. the majority of cards you do/review in anki are ones you will remember and pass. for those cards, having a mere picture does not seem more "fun" than just a vocab card.

1. This card format will lead to a higher amount of passed cards. Passed cards don't make Anki frustrating as they take a very short time. People who feel frustrated in Anki don't do so because they pass all their cards.
2. This card format will lead to a FAR lesser number of total lapses. Considering Anki's ease mechanics you will over a long period of time end up with less reviews than with any card format. This card format is suited for long term reviewing and will not be a burden even when you start getting over 20k cards.
3. Yes, it makes failed cards a lot more fun because you get to relive the anime moment you experienced before and it'll make you relearn the word very effectively. See 2.

this is not necessarily true at all. depending on what kind of media someone inputs, they might still encounter a significant amount of new words (5 to 10 every 500 words or so). someone like that could potentially keep learning from exposure, but it's understandable they'd want to continue doing so systematically if its still reaping benefits. my vocab is at least 12k now but i still encounter new things frequently enough for anki to be worth it for perhaps another year or so, and the stuff i watch isn't nearly as jargon-y as the shit QM does.

You seem to have a couple problems yourself, everything that somebody else does better than you is a lie or what? It's such a pathetic post. Instead of accusing people of lying work on yourself.

there's far more than two people in this thread other than him, so assuming that everybody shitposts and attention whores at the same rate, that's expected. there's 50+ people in this thread. if every single one of them shitposted and attention whored as much as he did there wouldn't be any thread left.

every single one of your posts was primarily directed at shitting at the people on this thread. giving him props was, at best, incidental. in fact, multiple people - even those who disagreed with him - gave him props for his method earlier in this thread and ~nobody cared~. if you'd actually just made a post doing that everyone would have moved on from it ages ago.

Regardless of your particular point, this is pretty representative of the inherent contrarianism on 4chan if someone identifies themselves.

It's not a universal case, but no matter how correct/incorrect/helpful/unhelpful you are, identifying yourself makes you a tall poppy with a history, so not only everyone will put in extra time/effort to make an example of you, but you'll also have a precedent and verifiable examples of less-than-stellar posts.

I think as a rule of thumb, trolls will not identify themselves unless they are intentionally trying to piss off others by tripfagging. So those who do identifies usually have (relatively) well-meaning intentions, even if it turns out to not result in quality posting.

Newbie here. Everyone says you should just jump in and start reading, but how am I supposed to do this? I'm just looking up the words on jisho, but this panel for instance.
でも = "but"
わかんない = "not understanding or not knowing" (this is wakaru + nai, right? wakaru is an ichidan verb?)
よ = a particle that ends a sentence for emphasis or to get attention (?)
The English translation is "but, you never know..."
How would I have gone about getting that translation? And how am I supposed to get grammar by doing this? I've posted about trying to learn grammar before but people just tell me to read and I'll get it through exposure.

It's mostly (~80-90%) dialog, so you're missing out on a lot of the language outside of that (ie.explanations of actions/scenery and whanot).
And also because it's a retarded djt meme to spam that manga isn't reading.

Ultimately the more you read the more you'll understand. A few things to keep in mind:
>translations you compare with will not always be correct, especially scans
>correct translations will often include minor rewrites in order to make the dialogue carry the same meaning in english, so if you're checking your reading against a translation aim for "the general gist" and not "1:1 perfect accuracy" this applies doubly for gag manga like nichijou
>slang will get easier to read the more words you know but sometimes it'll just feel completely unintelligible, it can help to watch more anime
I had a lot of the same doubts and misgivings as you at the start but now I can read manga pretty comfortably (despite frequent word lookups) and also play JRPGs comfortably (also need lookups).

漢字の「雹」は、日本の学校で習わないため、誰にも読めない程難しいくはないのだが、

Bc we do not learn kanji 雹 at school in Japan, it is not too difficult for anyone to read,
However, the girl "Yukko(nick)" in this manga is "idiot"(already you know), so it is not appropriate to use difficult kanji.
With kanji + ruby, her stupid part is not expressed.
It is not uncommon to use letters to say this.In schools and textbooks,
it is written that foreign languages,外国語、外来語、擬音語、擬声語、オノマトペ are mainly used,
yet in fact, for example, many of these words do not use kanji

Reminder that there's a massive community of people learning Japanese out there outside of DJT, MIA, your tiny private 4chan discords, reddit, and college classes, and the quibbles you drag yourself into are pathetic.

Can you imagine being so insecure that you haunt DJT with your active presence all day every day, posting about the same thing over and over again and getting into arguments with people who you claim you don't care about?

Imagine doing that in, like, a community dedicated to learning typing or photoshop. Absolutely ridiculous. Get over yourselves and just learn Japanese. It really is that easy. You can expose individual beginners giving bad advice if you want, but leave it at that.

It doesn't matter whether your vocab cards have screenshots on the back or not or whether you're mining with Yomichan or Nazeka or whether your reading material is focused on dialogue or narration or whether or not you're actually talking to Japanese people on the regular. It doesn't matter how dumb or mistaken the typical member of some random internet community is, and nothing you personally do could possibly change it.

All you have to do is keep consuming Japanese, not quit, and not make an absolute buffoon out of yourself. It's that simple.

just finished doing my anime cards and the time just flew by. i was laughing while doing my reviews because i remembered that part of the episode and it was like rewatching it. good stuff. anoher 30 words in my arsenal.

here's an interesting thing i noticed. everyone that complains about anime cards taking too long or whatever doesn't take into consideration the fact that if something is actually fun... you don't care about the time. you don't notice it. 10 minutes might as well be two. whereas you can do 10 minutes of boring cards and it feels like 20.

lol but in all seriousness i'm somewhere in between and my relationship with japanese people is great. they like the feeling of knowing they can 役に立つ sometimes when i don't know a word or two, but they also like being able to comfortably talk about almost any topic with someone from around the world (i've literally been told this). so i actually feel like i'm at the perfect speaking level for both of those benefits. that's why i don't bother practicing speaking anymore. i just keep learning stuff to improve my otaku entertainment experience. 極楽極楽~~

I'm already doing kklc and can write around 1k kanji but simply knowing kanji isn't enough the same way knowing kanji alone won't help with reading.
So I gotta do some dictation work or something similar how we learned to write our own language.

Your main focus should be voiced media. Optimally with text so you learn reading at the same time while listening. Best thing for that is Japanese subtitled Anime but VNs are fine too. Listen to audiobooks, podcasts or whatever voiced shit when you do chore or whatever and at first just try picking out familiar words. As you keep doing it'll eventually gradually turn into being fully comprehensible.
Learning a language by ear is incredibly important and people here stress reading before any amount of substantial audio input way too much (and they end up sucking ass).

>spending a couple of months building some basic vocab and grammar competency
If you mean you are going to spend time with textbooks or just learning shit disconnected from actual input then don't do that. Spend maybe a week getting an overview and start consuming Anime. Shows for children are fine but if that's too boring just watch whatever.

The best type of flashcard is this one with the word voiced in isolation and then in a relevant context, preferably one out of Anime you've previously consumed:

I don't want to stutter my way around something I forgot and enforce bad habits. I don't want to come up with grammatically correct sentences that sound unnatural so I've mostly abstained from production. forget the fact that it's anki since that doesnt fucking matter. there are thousands of youtube compilations of 10 to 20 second clips of anime scenes that people are watching for entertainment. anime cards are literally that, except with the objective of learning something in the process, and the picture isn't moving. but with the audio and image, if your brain works, it can still make the connection between the moving picture you saw and listened to, and the image you're looking at as you hear the audio.

they're not. those clips you reference are of the very best moments in those shows but when you're mining you'll come across a lot of words you don't know in certain contexts that make that word memorable, but that doesn't mean the clip is good enough to want to listen to over and over. a supermajority of cards have to have audio that is not particularly entertaining.

according to SOME people's opinions. depending on the show there are often way more funny clips that could've been added but weren't.
>but that doesn't mean the clip is good enough to want to listen to over and over
isn't it great that i have the option to only listen to some clips the first few times and then ignore it altogether later so the review takes 3 seconds? anime cards do not require listening to the clips every time forever. it's there for the first few reviews, and then only when you want to listen to it.
>a supermajority of cards have to have audio that is not particularly entertaining.
if you're watching something that sucks ass, this could be true. i love the shows i'm watching so most of my cards are entertaining. i'd say 30~40% are genuinely hilarious or giggle-worthy (doesn't even have to be the punchline clip, if it comes directly before or after there is still a 連想 with the funny part, if your brain works), 30% just make me smile, and the other 30% are closer to emotionally neutral but still have mild positive effect purely because of the fact they're from an anime i enjoyed and the art is probably nice to look at too.

1. what does sex have to do with any of this? see my above post about being desensitized and dulled. there's something wrong with you if you can't get entertainment out of anything without it being sexual
2. i don't have a dick, and i don't have sex with women. experimenting with girls has crossed my mind on a few occasions but i'm not going out of my way to find lesbians/bi girls for sex.
3. i've had mind-blowing, 連続 orgasms on multiple occasions. sex is cool but i'm over it right now. if i did want to get sex i could do so literally within minutes because men like you who are obsessed with the act are a dime a dozen.

according to your logic, if the cards "make anki fun" because of the audio clips, then not listening to the audio clips makes anki not fun.
>if you're watching something that sucks ass, this could be true. i love the shows i'm watching so most of my cards are entertaining. i'd say 30~40% are genuinely hilarious or giggle-worthy (doesn't even have to be the punchline clip, if it comes directly before or after there is still a 連想 with the funny part, if your brain works), 30% just make me smile, and the other 30% are closer to emotionally neutral but still have mild positive effect purely because of the fact they're from an anime i enjoyed and the art is probably nice to look at too.

rather have a child-like mind in regards to being easily entertained than a depressed hardened one like yours that needs 10 hours of porn to be satisfied. i don't think you people get that being easily entertained is actually a GOOD thing lol.

i decided i personally prefer watching an episode all the way through (while checking unknown words with rikaikun) before making my anime cards. making them along the way causes my attention to switch too much for my liking.
so i tinkered and ended up setting up another sharex shortcut to instantly bookmark just the timestamps for words i want to make cards for once i'm done watching the ep. it's mapped to screenshot only the area with the timestamp (like shown) by pressing one key on the bottom-right of my keyboard. by the end of an ep i have about 20~30 of these and can just go back to those parts of the show and make each card. so yeah, that's an idea i'm just throwing out there! it's been making the process more 楽 for me.

I was also thinking about something like this. I guess it would be quite easy, to get a screenshot and even the corresponding text from a defined subs file with a very simple program. Even auto google translate would be doable or using the localization from the english subs (or both for that matter). Only thing that would be a bit more tricky is getting the correct audio from the scene. I think I would have long done this, if quality Japanese subs would be more easily available. I really can't be bothered to look for those and then have to manually match them up with the video all the time.
