Alright I spent last night with Satori as my maid and it was pretty damn good. I got to admit my mental image of her is more kind of like a brat with a nasal voice kind of like nanachi from made in abyss that is really cheeky and a know it all but in this she was a super 礼儀正しい ojou san which I suppose I can enjoy in it's own way even if I don't really feel like it's Satori. Anyway the voice was really good and I've honestly felt like I was talked which really makes me go wild lol it was a cute & mindless plot like is common for these but it was really fun and I recommend it to everyone thanks for reading.

So I've made it to the 50% mark on the core 2k 6k optimized deck for Anki. Is there much value in continuing to go past this point I'm planning to just keep up with the reviews until all are mature then switch to reading in my daily routine in place of Anki now that I actually know fair amount of vocab.

Basically. He's said before that he draws the line at "people in the same business as him" (paraphrased) when it comes to piracy.

This is presumably why Dogen's Patreon videos aren't listed in MIA's resources page alongside the whole host of other copyrighted materials he sanctions (and has even produced himself, like scans of accent dictionaries) there.

In other words, yeah, he's only against piracy when he stands to lose from it, and in all other cases he either doesn't give a shit or actively facilitates piracy with the intent of profiting from it via Patreon money.

>> No.21491692

So in response to last night's yogacast and the topic of outputting:
I outputted a lot on discord and over hellotalk etc before finding MIA, and struggled to break the habit of replying to netfriends on LINE and such after starting. A couple months after starting MIA I actually met Japanese people where I live for the first time in my life and couldn't resist the urge to output and make a connection with these people. I beat myself up for it though and felt like I was breaking my ideals by outputting all the time. After they left back for Japan (after 2 months or so) it was about the time I had really bad anxiety and was afraid of death and started developing tinitus due to fluid buildup behind eardrum and all that (I'm mostly better now) and I kind of had a silent period of a couple months. Then I found myself procrastinating on discord all the time so I decided to replace most of my servers with Japanese servers, and so I started 聞き専ing quite a lot and just outputting via text every once in a while.

I've mostly outgrown all of my bad habits I used to have from early output and rarely make mistakes anymore (it does happen every once in a while) and I think it's because I have never prioritized output, and my input will always outnumber my output by a large factor. I also am really self conscious and afraid of making mistakes which leads to me speaking with simple stuff I know is correct. I think that you have to keep in mind the best way to impress people isn't to pull out big words and be fancy but to be consistent with using natural language.

I recently went on my second date with a Japanese girl and I spent 7 hours or so with her and I think it went pretty well. I think something that really makes a difference is that before trying to force output in something you don't know how to express in Japanese is to switch to English.
I wouldn't have had the opportunity to go on these dates and meet these people if I didn't output, and while outputting has no advantage in a language learning sense (of comprehension etc), I wouldn't throw away life experiences at the expense of making a couple bad habits (which will probably fix themselves if you get a ton of input anyway). Like don't go out of your way to output needlessly but if you go about it the right way and care about sounding good, you can probably still come out fluent on the other end. I'm not promoting early outputting and I still don't go out of my way to do it now

I can't make out the kanji on most.

>> No.21491900

I don't have a Switch but CFW and pirating on it seem in the rather advanced stages so you can get games for free. It may depend on whether or not you get a new or old console.
I myself got a CFW 2DS XL and that shit is pretty amazing for Japanese games. 3DS is region locked so you'd need to hack it anyway to play Japanese games.
As Freeshop is shut down a good place to get games is GazelleGames, if you can't find something there you go for public sites. Should be able to find most things.

Writing this out, it’s clear that the issue is that after I’ve been diligently studying and reviewing, I feel obligated to keep up the effort and when I don’t want to I just procrastinate and get burnt out. Any recommendations? Assuming both things cost the same amount of willpower, which is better? Focussed and motivated study for 8 hours once every couple weeks(in the form of reading+Hover dictionary, and not just speed reading via the translations) or daily 10 minute lessons about Japanese grammar (in Japanese)?
Focussed study seems beneficial but so does the frequency that comes from the videos.
PS I’ve experimented with caffeine, nicotine, and adafrinil (modafinil without prescription) for RATTATA but they haven’t helped terribly, Racetams seem promising but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Am I a brainlet or did that conclusion not follow at all? Like, the benefit of sentence cards is that they’re easier and more holistic. ok i watched the rest of it. btw i had actually misheard him lol, he said it was the most methodical and efficient way to use sentence cards, not that sentence cards are more methodical and efficient. anyways here's his main points in the video:
sentence cards 1. increase language ability by "leaps and bounds" when compared to immersion alone. 2. are good because you get exposure to use cases and to other words which helps you remember more stuff for free.
proponents of word only cards: 1. are saying to rote memorize whats on the back of the card first (jfc i hope not) 2. have higher mental overhead by testing themselves on multiple things each card 3. don't have the repeated use cases benefit of sentence cards 4. claim to do their reps so quickly -> 5. that it is unlikely for them to be testing themselves on the multiple things with high mental overhead each card.

assuming that's what they actually say then they're dumb. but besides that here's my counter argument to the rest of his points:
1. it doesn't follow that sentence cards would be better than immersion alone because the reasons that are given for sentence cards being good are the same things that immersion completely eclipse sentence cards on.
2. even though sentence cards use natural japanese, you are over exposing yourself to a single sentence (for example one sentence 100 times instead of 100 different sentences once), giving a biased impression of the word as well as gutting any nuance you'd have otherwise gained if you had immersed instead.
3. flashcards excel in two areas, rote memorizing small related sets and gentle reminders. you shouldn't use flashcards for comprehension, learning, or even memorizing words. they're best to just make you go "oh yeah" when you see a word that you almost didn't recognize. word cards allow you just look at the word and do that but a sentence card pushes you to do more instead as well as take more time reading.

the strongest point he made in the video was a side note about how you should make a new card for each homonym instead of cramming all these different words on a card (lol). sentence cards do completely outclass word cards when it comes to homonyms.

I was wondering how he got so good at English compared to most Japanese people and managed to find a video where he talks about how he learned it in more detail on another channel he has:
https://youtu.be/Oy2vw-Nrpq8
https://youtu.be/Oy2vw-Nrpq8?t=156

If you don't want to watch the video:
He basically did what you could call "AJATT-lite" (or I guess "AEATT-lite" since it's English). He says (Japanese) people should learn English just by doing things they find fun in English instead of Japanese (he mentions watching Western movies with English subtitles and reading articles in English about things of interest to him as examples). He says by doing this, learning English won't feel like studying anymore.

He also mentions that he did a lot of passive listening, basically using any (what Steve would call) dead time (driving, bathing, etc.) he had to listen to stuff in English - BUT, he recommends only doing this with things you have already listened to properly and understand both the contents and story of (he says you can use Japanese subs - or English subs in our case - to achieve this level of understanding if you need to). He says if you do it with something you're not familiar with then it will just become background noise and you won't get anything out of it.

In terms of learning to output, he talks about imitating whatever you're listening to when you're alone, aiming for 30 minutes to an hour per day. He says whenever he was listening to anything while driving, he was pretty much shadowing it constantly.

He doesn't appear to have used Anki at all, though he talked in one of the videos I already posted about using the sort of language learning CDs you get with Genki while in the shower to memorise words and phrases (he also talks about imitating those too while listening).

(what I intended to be a summary probably ended up being longer than the actual video, lol)

Hello /djt/, newbie here. I'm watching Cure Dolly's videos.
She says that to say "Sakura did not run", you'd say:
サクラがはしらなかった
サクラが = Sakura
はしら = runs
なかった = did not
My question is, why is "runs" not put in the past tense, and instead the word for "not exist" is put into past tense? Because to say "Sakura ran" you'd say
サクラがはしった
サクラが = Sakura
はしった = ran
I don't think she touched on that. I'm assuming there's some Japanese rule about this that I didn't pick up on.
Thanks in advance.

The past 2 weeks have been tough for me immersion-wise; I never really felt like doing anything in japanese. I was reaching ~2 hours a day just with my weekly anime & bus immersion, but other than that, just didn't feel like doing anything and just spent my time with english media. But yesterday I decided to force myself to remove those english media and try to get more japanese in, and suddenly I'm enjoying it a lot? It's as if the more japanese I do, the more I enjoy doing japanese things. I clearly dont understand any more than I did 2 days ago, so it's not a "well you understand more so of course it's more fun" kind of situation. It really does feel like the more I fill up my life with japanese stuff, or maybe the fewer non-japanese things that I do, the more I enjoy japanese stuff. Does that make sense? Hahaha

with japanese you have to worry about so many politeneess levels and so many idiosyncratic ways of saying things. compound verbs are really a bitch especially to me.
in chinese meanwhile tones take like maybe a month to get used to max if you have no ear for them and then you're good. I also tend to find different ways of expressing things in Chinese more intuitive, including those goddamn four-character compounds. meanwhile I'll still be dumbfounded at the subtleties of some common fucking japanese verbs.

fuck the grammar. semantics are what gets me every fucking time. I have no idea what anyone's ever fucking talking about with any given japanese sentence that isn't in the structure of X wa Y da/desu. it's like getting some vague blur or a sketch of some vague type of motion that occurred or is occurring somewhere and you're just supposed to intuit the rest. complexities can be memorized with time but being made to play detective every time anyone says anything is a next level altogether.
chinese was a fucking breeze compared to this. I strongly encourage people here to at least dip a foot in to see just how fucking easy it is, and also because it makes those damn characters a lot easier to remember.

it's the same mindset behind why japan was the first of its kind to independently industrialize and become a great power. the japanese are more open/altruistic than their neighbors, meaning more cooperation, less corruption. corruption is one of the biggest reasons why china failed to modernize and kept getting butt fucked by japan. this is also why the west is the king of media, as it is the most altruistic, cooperative, and least corrupt of all. i don't know why this mindset leads to more creativity/better media but it's there

If Kizuna Ai is that virtual youtuber she's probably playing it up, but everyone outside of the overly educated fuck up a lot of readings. It's natural, really. You get the meaning so even if you come across it in a text when you're reading to yourself, you're not going to bother looking up the reading unless you're a kanji nerd, so Japanese people walk around with a passive knowledge of the meaning of a lot of words without knowing exactly how they're supposed to be read.

people who are actually fluent and not brainwashed into RTK know that the best way has always been learning words before anything. if you want to brush up on telling differences later, study the radicals, write some out, whatever. but anyone who says to front-load kanji either doesn't know japanese or wasted a shit ton of their time doing that and are in denial that it was a waste of time.

anyone who's actually getting daily input of japanese reading and paying attention to the process realizes that the value and utility of knowing keywords for individual kanji is extremely low compared to just knowing words.

i don't think "actual listening skills" can only be developed that way. what's the difference between listening to one long thing vs listening to one short thing multiple times? with the latter at least you get repetition of problem areas. people who recommend listening to the stuff you mentioned (which by the way i have been doing for a few years now and still do, my listening still isn't perfect though) often recommend listening to the same thing repeatedly anyway. not sure why that would change if the pieces were just smaller.

you know what everyone who is good at Japanese kind of understands but never talks about is that visual novels are kind of a big fucking mess with bad writing and often will work against you understanding shit I mean something a native might still understand somewhat but they'll just gloss over it and go "OK? guess I got it but this shit is written by retard" if you actually try to ponder on every line and comprehend it you'll break your head especially if you are still a baby
I recommend Japanese subtitled anime instead and anime cards

don't worry with anime cards you will still learn to read

>>21501654
whatever dude it's tolerable most of the time
like it depends on the sub I've seen some really fucked up ones where watching it was anti fun because every line was wrong but I think that was some OCR fuck up
even chinks get most things right except some kanji misses or okurigana or whatever
like in the last chink sub episodes I watched they put in 体験 when the guy said 経験 just baby shit like that

>>21501657
nah I can read plenty I've read into some more VNs recently and mined a good amount of words
but who knows if I'll actually stick it through I get tired of VNs pretty fast and go back to Anime, audiobooks and LNs instead

>>21501668
I mean it always depends on the writer same thing is true for VNs
ultimately both is fine but you'll notice all this shit and can decide for yourself once you know a fair amount
I think the best starting ressource is Japanese subtitled Anime
when you got a vocab of like 10000~ I think it's okay to jump into other shit

RTK is worth it for the radicals + mnemonics, not for the order itself.
Nature doesn't unveil itself in a systematic order the way Heisig's RTK or any other formal exposition of literally anything does.
If I've got a kanji like 増, that points to me to 土,田, 日, and two horns. If I didn't know those kanji, I could make cards for each one of them, and make a mnemonic for it, without having to add every single kanji that Heisig puts between them.
