Is eating with chopsticks part of the ajatt experience as well? I want to make sure I follow every sacrament of our lord Matt so one day I’ll reap the blessings of the perfect tokyo pitch accent I’m very scared of the kansai intonation and pray every night it won’t affect me

i just finished reading my THIRD manga volume of the day (the most raw manga i've read in one day) and i realized something...
i like manga way more than LN's. like way more.
i've read three LN's so far and although they were cool, manga's just suck me in and entertain me far more. and before that annoying "manga isn't reading" retard shows up, i farmed over 200 new words into my word bank today (not anki, details later), reviewed a bunch of grammar i was shakey in, and encountered 30+ words i've recently learned so you can suck my ass, i was obviously reading.

anyway the message i want to send is, do what YOU want to do in japanese and learn from that. don't listen to some loser on DJT (who probably doesn't know japanese) that claims you can't get good at japanese without using X medium. they can all suck it.

as for me, i'm sticking to manga, anime with j-subs, and videogames (DS, 3DS, PSVita, PSP) because that's what i fuckin like. and i didn't start learning japanese to impress some socially retarded gatekeepers on the web. i started learning so i could enjoy the things that i WANTED to enjoy in the language. and you should to.

Learned the kana and about to start a Japanese class in uni for the summer. Professor seems to be from Japan and "it's [her] pleasure to help you learn Japanese." I'm planning on immersing and learning some kanji on my free time while learning the genki shit on the side. Not really trying to work for the grade, just to remember vocab. I'll be reading and using time effectively to learn some context. What do you guys suggest? Should I drop the class?

>8. Food: Japanese only
>The Japanese restaurants I know of are expensive. Maybe you can visit them only once in a while. You could also visit Japanese food shops, buy the ingredients, and cook your own food. You don’t know how to use the ingredients? Just ask the shopkeepers (or your friends) about what to cook.

>Also, whatever kind of food you eat, eat it with chopsticks. I started using only chopsticks years before going to Japan. Don’t be intimidated, they aren’t hard to use. Plus, you can almost eat anything solid with chopsticks: rice, cake, ice-cream. So use them! Again, you may earn the ridicule of those around you, but just grin and bear it. Since moving to Japan, it’s dawned on me that the chopsticks thing wasn’t just a psychological tool and it wasn’t just for getting attention. It really is a social skill; outside of Japan, they may be rare, but in Japan everything comes with chopsticks; you need to know how to use them.

Going back and re-reading something you struggled with before can be really motivating.

I recently re-read volume one of Overlord and, while there were still some bits I struggled with, it was so much easier this time. The first time I felt like I was just guessing my way through most of the novel and decided not to read the second volume because my comprehension was just so poor and and it was so difficult for me to follow.

Planning to start volume 2 today.

>(WARNING: this will absolutely fuck your popup dictionary add-on in Firefox; not sure about Chrome/Chromium)
Just tested it and vertical text in Chrome/Chromium fucks popup dictionary addons too, but in a different way.

In Firefox, there's a massive performance hit when using them on a page with vertical text, which renders them basically unusable, but they do still at least function (if extremely poorly).

In Chrome/Chromium, Yomichan "works" and there doesn't seem to be any negative performance impact, but the popup you get is completely blank.

- some researchers gather a bunch of random weebs with wildly varying motivation levels for a study
- they grab a genki textbook, wanikani, an RTK book, a book on input hypothesis, and anki. then randomly distribute them to the participants
- they test everyone's japanese in 6 months and only 1/3 of the participants have made any significant progress, the other 2/3 have gotten nowhere
- he concludes "welp, foreigners learning japanese doesn't work so everyone should just give up!" paying no attention to the details of what methods were used for each group of participants, and how/why effectiveness may vary between techniques

I didn't read one piece, but manga recently got a lot easier for me, I tend to struggle a bit more with novels, but in general I still need more vocabulary and will for a long, long time.
Stuff with furigana is really cool; because then you can easily learn words with context (and don't need to look up the reading).
I feel like I have a 80~90% comprehension on some anime (depends really), but I feel like I understand like a word every three sentences in the news.
Exaggerating in both cases, but the difference is noticeable.
One Piece probably has a lot of specialized vocabulary with ships and pirates and stuff.

The reason it's more difficult than light novels is because of the grammar and colloquial language usage. Learning 10 new words doesn't really make something difficult. What makes something difficult is finding something you can't really Google to find out the answer.

I'd wager that pretty much everyone on these boards is aware of it since it's in every single motivational piece of content that exists. Applying it or not is their business.

As for myself, I do apply it. I've become good at everything I've wanted to so far in my life. Not to the levels I'd hoped for in some things but enough to learn that I have the ability to learn things.

if people aren't applying it then it's not actually obvious to them at a level that actually matters, and thus reminding them of it is beneficial. the fat people example is poor because there are other variables at work keeping those bad choices in place, which they are likely not aware of and don't know how to control. carbohydrate addiction and insulin resistance, emotional attachment to food etc.

that's different from someone who wants to play piano but his dad's judgmental voice keeps repeating in his head making him think he'll never be good at it. its probably not "obvious" to him that that's why he can never acknowledge his improvements despite years of practice.

There are forms of self-destructive behavior that are not apparent to the person doing them, I agree, but I don't think this is one of them due to how obvious it is conceptually and how widespread it is in our culture. The stuff about food is all well and good but the main reason the vast, vast majority of people are fat is cause they eat like fucking pigs and not doing that would solve the problem in its entirety for them which they are well aware of.
>its probably not "obvious" to him that that's why he can never acknowledge his improvements despite years of practice.

Most people think they're past it by 10k, then they realize the fast early progression grinds to a halt and they're barely making any progress anymore. It's the issue of learning common -> uncommon. Common accounts for a higher percentage so sense of progression comes fast. It's before you get fluent where you have to crawl through unknown words, unfamiliar grammar structures and common phrases with a set meaning. On top of that you still struggle to read and you are shit at listening because your brain takes too long to decode the sentence before the next one already comes.

These are all beginner problems which make it hard as shit to get anywhere, but disappear completely after a while.

>if u make "enjoying" the focus ur still trying to enjoy and being cognitive about the process itself
this is where i disagree with you. being aware of whether you're enjoying something doesn't make it less enjoyable. in fact it's the opposite. acknowledging that you're having fun doing something is positive reinforcement in itself. now, "trying" to enjoy something that you're actually not, is something different and that's not what i'm talking about.
>there is no focus only mindless entertainment
don't agree with this either. i'm not a fan of mindless entertainment. i enjoy savoring, reflecting and taking things in. even before learning jap i was pausing anime to look at beautiful art more closely and repeating my favorite parts of songs.

>also when it comes to the first point i find once i become aware that something is fun and start thinking about that its all over from there ive ruined the good thing i had going with the biggest poison of them all: awareness
it sounds like you don't know the difference between awareness and thinking. you can be aware of the literal felt sensation of "fun/enjoyment" in your body while doing something enjoyable (feels like tingling or lightness, hard to put into words but you know what it feels like). that requires no thinking whatsoever.
if you are unable to notice a sensation that feels good, without having an unnecessary fun-ruining trail of verbal thoughts about it, then your mind is probably untrained and has a habitual pattern of generating unnecessary/distracting thoughts in response to anything you consciously notice feels good.

for me, because my mind is trained, i can become aware of a sensation in my body (like "fun") and it actually becomes more intense, sometimes to the point of ecstasy. this is because i've trained my mind not to wander into unnecessary thought-streams all the time. instead it can concentrate on what's going on in my actual body more clearly, and even amplify it. no distracting mental chatter necessary.

>> No.21471484

challenge for djt
the next time you're really having fun doing something, see if you can gently notice where in your physical body you feel the "fun". especially check out your throat area, chest area, and stomach. there should be a characteristic sensation in those areas that feels different when you're enjoying yourself. noticing where you feel it makes it easier to tap into more often.

newfag here. I’ve memorized the katakana and hiragana and I’m working my way through the KanjiDamage deck since I learn well with mnemonics. Unless I missed it, I didn’t see a mnemonics-based vocab deck in the guide, are there any decent ones floating around?
Also, can someone explain to me the difference between onyomi, kunyomi, and jukogo? I know them from a definitional point of view but I’m foggy on how they differentiate in practice. My goal is to be able to read (writing and speaking I don’t really care about at all), so which of the three is most relevant to/should I focus most on for this goal?

the shit in your brain is actually fodder for you to get good at the skills meditation trains. for example you can't get good at directing your attention if there's nothing to distract you in the first place. the distractions, the mental noise, the judgments, thoughts etc are what you use to grow. and then when you get good, a lot of it just fades away. which is great lol. and then you can start feeding your brain with more quality fertilizer like metta.

Just drop the deck and read more.

This is the problem with pre-made decks (and to some degree even mining decks, depending on the card format and general approach). You remember things by creating lots of meaningful connections to the information in your brain. Learning a word purely from a flashcard only gives you one, very weak connection which often doesn't survive in the long-term.

I'm also European and the people who actually get good at their second or third language don't get good because of textbook study, they get good because of exposure.

I also think you vastly overstate how many people know multiple languages at a fluent level here. Most people had English and another language (French, Spanish, Italian) in school but can't speak any of those for shit. The ones who can are the people who actually ended up spending time in those countries and being constantly exposed to it. >> No.21474458

I think the only part of language learning in which textbooks are actually useful is at the very beginning when you know absolutely nothing and need to get a foot in the door. You get some basic idea of how the language is structured and some basic vocabulary to work with. Anything more than that and you're wasting your time.

But it's retarded trying to memorize everything including all exceptions and special cases the first time you encounter something language related.

I see a lot of people here with the completionist mindset. It's okay if your initial grasp on things isn't perfect because it will sort itself out over time as long as you keep with the fucking language and you don't need to stress about any of this either.

and then in order to ride u have to grab the handle bars with both hands on the respective grips and sorta gotta propel urself forward with ur body weight and concurrently lift both feet from the ground and place them on their respective pedals and alternate pressure with ur 2 legs to get the pedals spinning and u can kind of feel the rhythm of how ur doin it as to control ur velocity all the while u have to maintain balance by controlling ur center of gravity which is controlled largely by your arms and legs being in contact with the bike at the points that they are and if u do it right u sorta just stay upright and roll and its pretty ftw and u know ur doing it wrong if u fall over well hope that helps good luck riding the bike

I read an interview with James Heisig where he mentioned learning to speak Japanese by playing with children, somewhere up in the mountains. How could you even make this stuff up? So when I heard the man was in Tokyo, I knew I had to ask him about it.

Because here’s the extent of what I learned from children by teaching grade school in Japan for several years: The word for lunch. How to say “I’m so cold.” How to say “I’m so hot.” How to grab your teacher’s penis and exclaim “bigu sticku.” How to insert your fingers up his butt in a move known >>21475955
as the kancho. Beyond that, children typically ramble about some toy or cartoon or playground game. They’re not going to coach you on how to make hotel reservations or order up another plate of gyoza. The idea that one could learn to speak from them is insane. They can’t even use the language decently themselves. That’s because they’re freaking kids.

I met Heisig at a writer’s workshop. He seemed a pleasant enough fellow, and a fine teller of grandiose stories. After listening to his well-polished tale about singlehandedly inventing a way of learning Japanese characters that millions of Japanese folks had never thought of in their thousands of years of history, I finally got a chance to ask him, “How did you learn to speak it?”

“I played baseball with the kids,” was his reply. “Up in the mountains. In Nagano.

“You played baseball?” I asked. “With children?

“Yep.

“And that’s how you learned to speak Japanese?

I've been doing Japanese for like 9 months and my hypothesis is that I'll be better at Spanish within 6 months or so. yea, it's not "useful" but neither is learning japanese. it takes time away from learning japanese but so what? you don't have to get good fast. ajatters like matt and britvsjapan already broke those records so there's no point even attempting it. it's why quiztard will always live in the shadows of ajatters. we're all cheap imitations.

drilling readings for those kinds of words instead of focusing on the meaning is a fool's game. and like i said if you see them enough the reading will stick anyway. the MEANING should be PRIMARY since that is what will help you the most.

yeah, after they ALREADY know the words those readings are for. at that point it's just learning to associate the kanji with words they already know.
thats completely different than a foreign learner coming across a word for the first time and forcing themselves to memorize the reading of a kanji word with little to no prior knowledge of the word's use or meaning.

You use ShareX just like quizmaster's cards. It's been a while so I don't remember the exact procedure. It only took about 10 seconds in addition to the time it takes to record though. I have a vague recollection of manually dragging a file, hitting f2, and copying its filename, but that might've been from a very early stage before I figured out how to automate it.

The relationship the verb has to the rest of the sentence is part of its definition. With 見る, something is seeing something else. With 見える, something is being seen by something else. With 見せる, something is making something be seen by something else. And so on. "self-move" and "other-move" are just awkward ways of translating a Japanese description of this phenomenon into English.

"Self-action" means "intransitive" and "other-action" means "transitive". But transitivity is loose in different and incompatible ways in Japanese and English so you shouldn't try to understand them exactly the same way. For example some verbs in Japanese mean the same thing regardless of whether you use them with が or を, almost as if you don't need a subject at all or the distinction between subject and object is irrelevant or meaningless. Meanwhile in English there are lots of verbs that are intransitive and passive by default but become transitive and causative when you add a direct object. Transitivity is a very important concept but English and Japanese are different enough that some people insist on using shitty literal representations of Japanese words instead of "transitive" and "intransitive". But that's dumb. Don't think, feel.

>try not to look at it before you try looking at the kanji
>if you recognize the word and what it means, but only after reading the furigana, sit there and process the kanji spelling of it for a sec before you move on

1) Learn kana.
2) Read a grammar guide (like sakubi or boiro) Don't waste too much time on it. Just be sure to get the hang of whatever you're looking at.
3) Start reading as soon as possible. Look up words on a dictionary when needed.
4) Avoid DJT threads. They're nothing but a group of people circlejerking around the meta aspects of Japanese learning.
5) Pick up words from anime, VNs, LNs, movies, newspaper articles or anything else. Anki can be useful to a limited extent, but don't abuse it.
Q- Should I learn kanji?
Recognizing words in kanji is good enough. Writing kanji is only a fancy trick for people who like to have trees cut down so that they can write their notes on paper.
Q- How long should this take?
There is no set deadline. The day you can understand what you want to understand will be the day you've already reached your goal.
Q- How much time should I spend on immersing in Japanese media per day?
Any amount of time is reasonable if it doesn't block you from doing other things that you want or have to do. Have only 20 minutes? Do 20 minutes. Got 8 hours to spend? Spend 8 hours doing stuff you enjoy. Immerse if and only if you've got something fun to look forward to consuming.
Q- Is this method failsafe?
No, but neither is anything else. Practice whatever you want to get good at. Ignore stuff that you don't care about.
