If u really decide to go, u will have to book the hotel and flight tickets ASAP.
If fr US, EU and around need to pay attention to the time difference and the date bc flight time is very long.

I can answer 1st timer Qs including directions fr airport to hotel, and directions fr hotel to BIGSITE and more,
but the foreign language guide on the official site has not been updated in detail for "C96".

Facts that the session is extended fr 3 Days to 4 Days, required wristbands and big construction for Tokyo Olympic 2020 is a true story.
Only required wristband has been officially announced that the venue can be purchased on the day, but details of the price and how to buy have not been released yet.

If u do not understand COMIKE system, u have to study only the "GENRE code" right now,
https://www.comiket.co.jp/info-c/C96/C96genre.html
bc if u go on the 2nd day even if u are male and not fag, u have to keep up with the cold look of women looking for BL books.

If u buy a paid official CATALOG, the names and locations of each circle are listed in detail.
It is also a DVD-ROM and WEB version(maintenance now) but no EN version.

Thanks for this. It really means a lot. I'm planning to go for the first time this summer to see a couple of friends who are Doujin artists. I'm in the process of getting my passport right now (should get it by ~July but I'm going to book as soon I file for it). I plan to be in Japan for a week and only attend for the Touhou Day (day 4) since that is my primary interest.
Anyway, what time do you suggest I head out to comiket? I'm thinking of trying to buy the new Touhou game at ZUN's booth but that sounds super difficult.
What are some hotels you recommend to stay at that are close by?
Also, do you personally enjoy Comiket? How many times have you been there? Do you recommend it?

I really want to pick up Ciconia no Naku Koro ni and the new Touhou game but it sounds hard. I've been to comiket once before but I didn't try to get anything popular then.

Is there any reason why I should spend my shickles on traveling to nippon and buying stuff in the crowded comiket?

People like to own things physically. Sure in these days you can get all sorts of doujin stuff online and for free, but people still like to own physical copies of things. I'd like to for some stuff, but even then, I can buy things off Mandarake and not bother going to Comiket. So really personally why I'd like to go at least once is just for the experince I guess, not to mention that Comiket is far from the only reason I'd want to go to Japan, and would probably only be a few days out of a longer trip. Going to Japan only for Comiket would seem a bit silly to me.

The CT is a ticket for preparing the booth in the hall.
Certainly you can enter earlier than general participants,
and no need to enter at the same time as other circle members.
But those(CT holders) who are not involved in setting up a booth
or carrying in luggage are bothered by the staff as bothersome, but just no penalty.

And explained already in the above some replies,
fr this C96 on it is a condition for admission to attach a wristband.
This is the same for circle participants, but they have not yet made a detailed announcement.
When the details are officially announced, their friends will also tell u about the wristband.
Wristbands will be distributed free of charge to circle participants,
but it will be more problematic if u can receive this wristband before ur entering.

Ill explain a bit more about wristbands in reply to above ps, so pls check them there.
I plan to post it separately in turn fr now on, but this matter will be delayed.
If the friend who gave u a CT can read Japanese,

GC is one of the items required to apply for Circle participants.
It should be understandable to u that this is to gather the same theme circle nearby.

I'm not a gamer, so if GBF isn't wrong with "Granblue Fantasy",
The number of GBF-themed circles does not extend to other large independent categories.
It belongs to the "312 ゲーム(ネット・ソーシャル)Game (net social)" on the 1st day,
and its name is also written in the supplement (sub page).
In Japan, "GBF" is officially abbreviated as "グラブル Grabl(GuraBuru)", so it may only be difficult to find.

Info on the official CATALOG is convenient for knowing the booth position of a specific circle in advance.
This may be a reply to other 1st timers as well as for u, also u can enter without buying it mentioned already.
Since catalog sales income is a part of the event operating costs, its not an obligation to cooperate with them,
however, it is a very valuable activity if you think of this event as a small donation to continue going forward.

Probably random but maybe good thread to ask:

I once bought some Satoshi Urushihara doujins, the 'Nostalgic Heroine' series with the huge color posters + some other rare hentai stuff like the 'Fractal' magazine 1st issue and other doujins.

My problem now is I have no idea where to sell them? Obviously I can't put them on eBay and I don't want huge hassles. Not even looking for maximum profit, but just an easy sale.

It is lucky that TOUHOU is on the DAY 4 list, bc u can go to any of the previous 3 days to preview.
However, before answer about buying items that u want, I'd like to give other basics
and divided it into some, bc the explanation became longer than I thought.

The first basic is the kind of circles,
famous big circles and corporate booths(企業ブース kigyo booth), their fans form long waiting lines
and get in the way of other participants, so every booth arranged along the "wall",
so these circles are called "壁サークル kabe circle,
and especially "シャッター前(shutter mae) = in front of shutter" circles are largest.
ZUN circle "上海アリス幻樂団 Shanhai Alice Gengakudan/Team Shanghai Alice " is one of them.
Most participant and also official staff are calling "壁(kabe) = wall" or "壁サー kabe-cir" is usual as nick.
On the other hand, the circle area of many long tables inside the hall on a small scale is called "島(shima) = island(s)",
shorten of "島サークル shima circle", open below URL if still wondering.

This is an easy to understand version of the C94 (東ホール higashi hall = east hall) 4 to 6 map I added in the previous reply.

RED indicates "kabe", inner BLUE indicates "shima", and katakana(カタカナ) + numbers indicate each circle location.
It starts with the katakana "シ(shi)", but the meaning is the same as using the alphabet A-Z.
Only "ハ(Ha) line" of shima circle "パpa, ピpi, プpu, ペpe, ポpo" is also used, just not enough block number.
Other hall that use ひらがな(hiragana) instead of katakana, but this is not a big problem.
https://fanbox.pixiv.net/images/post/72956/2BqFGFbn3Zn3zdiFnVwMpOsi.jpeg
The numbers do not matter even if u read English,
but it is difficult to make mistakes if u remember and say hiragana and katakana.
http://japanese-lesson.com/characters/hiragana/index.html

Shutter mae and some big circles waiting lines are make outside the hall,
https://postimg.cc/hQW46zGj
means not wait at inside the hall building usual, but in this time hall location will change, no exact.

So we need physical/mental strength to line up for a long time if reached there late.
About how to spend into long line will explain again if someone want to know.

Well, here is what u most want to know, but still not all, anyway,
now checked again some info about ZUN such as official twitter and.
Their tw said that the trial version distributed at the last event 例大祭(Reitai-sai) in GW is the largest congestion ever.
https://twitter.com/korindo/status/1124877126161784832
(完売/kanbai = sold out, Reitai-sai opened 10:30 am).
Also this fan who was in line with Reitaisai, says, "Here is still half of the line, OMG",
https://postimg.cc/KR0TNC3H
this slope is about 100m, so waiting line was pretty long, over 1km(0.6mi) total, very yabai.

They will have enough stocks for C96, but most kabe circles will be sold out before noon,
so u'll have to arrive by the first train (arond 5:20 am) and wait until the open time 10:00 am.
Last summer C94 ZUN, it was v16.5, not a complete new title sold out past 13:00,
but C96 is a completely new it can be expected that many fans including u are expecting it, right?

In reply to Touhou Q, explained the contents of the catalog (reading method), but didnt write some tips.
The GC number and the number assigned to each booth are non-related and no regularity,
I did not explain this in detail, so I might have misled it.

Anyway, want u to check at the GC page again "ゲーム(ネット・ソーシャル)".

Luckily, yesterday this site (un-official) was not all but only the hall layout map of 西3,4 uploaded.
https://anime.information.jp/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/C96_Nishi34_0609.jpg
This simple map is for printing, and is for marking the circle location by urself,
however, each circle name and booth numbers are not added,
but many GBF circles will upload their booth info on twitter and usual, easy to find.
The printing fee for Seven-Eleven (Convenience Store) is 20Y/map.
https://www.printing.ne.jp/index_p.html
West Hall 3 is not as wide as the East Hall, which is not used this time,
https://jyuden.com/wpfiles/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/20160811-0013.jpg
There is only one entrance arrow on this map, but an outside entrance also be used.

But, fr this time West Hall 3 (4F) will be only the un-official means "real" Dojin circles,
so bc the products of the official corporate booth will be the newly used "AOMI Exhibition Halls".
So u need to be careful bc the place u go first is completely different, depending on what u want.
If u have to go to "AOMI" halls first by train, the station u get off will be different,
but a lot of staff for guidance immediately after leaving the ticket gate of the station, no worry.
http://www.bigsight.jp/english/hotel/map/
http://www.bigsight.jp/english/hotel/aomi/

At last time C95(2018 Winter), there was no official corporate booth as "GBF",
but the "郵便局 yubin-kyoku = Japan Post " booth sold official limited GBF products,
https://www.4gamer.net/games/414/G041434/20181219143/
but as the such info in that area has not been announced yet.

Also I can not predict how long the queue will be cut off early in the morning waiting lines.
Especially for the First day including GBF, there will be no surprises and unforeseen troubles will occur.
In that sense, those who ask Touhou Qers are the 4th day, so they are completely different fr u.

Not him, and I've unfortunately never been but, is it really that hard to imagine? Hell have a theoretical situation:
A western journalist in town for the Olympics decides to go to Comiket to see what it's all about. They wander about and come across something they find disagreeable, probably loli, Instead of going moving on like a reasonable person, they make a big fit, possibly trying to get stuff banned or something even though they have nothing to do with Japan or otaku. I doubt they'd be successful if they did of course, but there's still no need for such a thing to happen in the first place. Also, yes I know most stuff at Comiket isn't H stuff, but it's there (and nice) and we don't need stupid westerners throwing a fit over it.

People who say this always seem to think that comiket is some kind of well-kept secret. Hundreds of thousands of people go there twice a year, we really don't need to wonder about a western journalist finding out about our """secret""" club.

I don't think that, but I still don't see how a western journalist going could do any good. Even if Comiket isn't some secret, which it's obviously not, most westerners who go, which I'm sure are a small percentage themselves, are probably otaku.

I think >>21499699 is referring to a nightmare scenario where a Western journalistic piece acquires enough infamy from the hyperfocus of the Olympics to make the rounds in the larger social news circles, newspapers, TV, etc.

You say "everyone" knows about Comiket, but do you include the man on the street as well? Your family?
While I'm sure they'd never pay attention enough to actually remember the name (and they might end up calling it Comic Market, or confuse it with a Japanese Comic-Con), they'll have a vague idea that there are sick fucks in Japan who make porn for potential kiddie fiddlers to get off with.

And for people with an actual ax to grind, they've just found their newest and greatest cause célèbre.

I was imagining something of that sort yes. Also apparently Tokyo Big Sight is being used for the Olympics and will be closed between April and November, which I didn't realize, so that's also contributing. Think outside the box anon, First Taxi is the way to go.
Just find three pals, sleep together on the same airbnb and use a taxi app at 2am.
If done on day three you'll most likely land in the 4-X or 5-X lane, but it might be different this time around with four days.
You can then gaijin smash and make room for one or two friends to sneak in when they come from the first train.
This has been proven on the field and it'll cost you around 6 to 10 usd each depending on the distance.
Recently someone even introduced the first flight theory, anything is possible.

>You can then gaijin smash and make room for one or two friends to sneak in when they come from the first train.
While I recognize that it is rather futile for me to get angry about this, I genuinely hope that most weebs are reserved enough not to do this.
One of the things I've genuinely really, really appreciated in developed East Asian countries is that people will (usually) form a queue and stick to it. Even if the wait is hours and hours, this is (usually) respected.

In the USA, once a line is large enough that people believe they will not be noticed by anyone with authority, people will readily have their friends let them in. It's rarely an issue of the added time, but rather the idea that your time and the time of your friends is worth more than everyone behind you. Pulling the gaijin smash makes it that more terrible, since it is a blatant violation of the "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" principle not for entirely selfish reasons.

It's one of the few cultural tendencies of my countrymen that truly irks me whenever it occurs, and I will risk looking like a tool to refuse either an offer by my friends to cut, or to let my friends cut. It's one of the few hills I'll die on, mainly because I know from living in East Asia that it really, truly does not have to be that way.

And yeah, some Japanese cut the line as well, but I'll be damned if it is comparable to Americans.

Does anyone know the conventions for giving gifts or letters to creators? I sometimes have heard stories about artists getting gifts, fan letters, even cookies or cakes, etc. and if possible would like to do something like that for one of my favorite creators who's going to be there, but not sure if there's anything to know in advance about doing that.

It would be awesome to get an autograph or something super fanboy like that, but I'm not sure if that's normal either. Does anyone know the custom for this kind of thing?

If the meaning of "lookin at scenery and buildings" is not "聖地巡礼 seichi junrei", the scenery of Tokyo may lack freshness.
https://anime-tourism.jp/r/Tokyo/

The meaning of travel in Japan, including those outside Tokyo, is far greater than what u see and imagine in a world-map.
https://thetruesize.com/

But if u want to do things that arent otaku activity, I dont feel the value of talking much in this thread.

Also, no idea that real Jp otaku will make friends with gaijin otaku as a chance to play at night.
If among gaijin otaku comrades or someone of jp otaku group who can speak foreign lang, it may be easy to join together,
however, 5 reasons why they do not want to be with u even after the end of event even in out of during this C96 period.

- Lang barrier (NOT "otaku = コミュ障")

- Basically, money for eating out, alcohols mainly at night is waste.

- Summer Tokyo is humid and uncomfortable, d like to go home(hotel) and take a shower AEAP.

- Gaijin otaku level is unknown, it seems may lacks fresh,
even if u may be better than the jp "にわか niwaka = beginner" otaku.

- Bc dont know surprisingly things other than otaku culture (tourism info, etc.),
being unable to give a correct answer immediately becomes stress.

I do not say that everyone is so, but they arnt "chicken" chara, nor a fear.
It just won't put direct dialogue activities above their priorities list.

no restriction on making "差し入れ sashi-ire" and giving a fan letter.
But pls choose something that will not increase ur return luggage,
size, weight, longer retention period, and can be stored at room temperature.
cold/iced coffee and tea are not desirable bc they often want to go to トイレ by diuretic action,
So, スポーツドリンク(ポカリ or), ミネラルウォーター, 栄養ドリンク, ゼリー飲料,
塩キャラメル, カロリーメイト like are preferred, but these are not unique.
If the 最高気温 on the day exceeds 30℃, the "冷却シート" will also be appreciated.
(u should use it too, if so)

In popular circles, can not accept "サイン(autograph)"
or "スケブ skebu(shorten of sketchbook) = quick illustration" usual.
If dont have much popularity on the 島サークル, no probelem, if the creator still alive.

Not boogieanon, but my best recommendation is finding common ground, for example you LOVE Symphogear or X idol franchise and they do too, you'll be able to get the conversation going with ease.
Only problem is that people at Tokyo are done with weebs/tourist, so the ice is harder to break. Best tip in this case would be traveling to cities used as reference for Anime like Yuuki Yuuna, Yama no Musume or Girls und Panzer.
Enjoy the day, do some stamp rallies, and close the day with a golden brooch by going to local bars. People will know you are the real deal by default when a gaijin shows up out of nowhere and will most likely want to start a conversation with you, plus alcohol is way cheaper outside of Tokyo.
I recommend Ooarai these coming months now that the new OVA is on theaters.

forgot one, jp otaku have almost no plans to go to ur country.
the reason why we do not want to go abroad is not only rate of "YEN".

it is easier to become a friend first with a gaijin otaku who has a jp otaku friend
who can speak English or, and to introduce someone to meet u.
https://daiichiro.wordpress.com/2010/08/18/%E3%82%B3%E3%83%9F%E3%82%B1%E3%81%A7%E5%BA%83%E3%81%92%E3%81%9F%E4%B8%96%E7%95%8C%E3%81%AE%E8%BC%AA%EF%BC%81interview-in-comic-market-78-%E3%80%90part1%E3%80%91/

but it may not be difficult depending on the direction(genre, titles) of ur otaku world,
just try wearing Anime t-shirt is one of simple way.

But bc the data management company is different, the domain just uses different names.

However, even if open this site, u can not get individual circle names or location info without login and payment.
Non members can see only the major genres and genre codes by switching date tab and place the (mouse) pointer over the map.
Already mentioned above, genre code is not related to the number of location info of each circle.
