Kanji is so strange of a concept to grasp as a westerner.

You spend your whole life interweaving letters to form words or concepts, then get introduced to a culture where almost every concept or phrase has it's own unique symbol. And you have to memorize at least a few thousand to be able to read past grade-school level.

Moreover, the same exact sounding phrase could be any one of a dozen+ kanji depending on the context it's used in.

The more I dig deeper into learning the language the more overwhelming it feels.

>> No.21432504

it stops feeling overwhelming like 5k words in but maybe i'm at what's called mount stupid and i'll suddenly run into crazy wacky kanji combos that will destroy me but i'm pretty smart so i don't think that'll happen.

They're not. Just think of them as the components in compound words (like con+dense, psych-o-log-y). You need to learn tens of thousands of words with odd spellings in English to know how to read anything (have you ever thought about how odd it is that the letter "a" in "beauty" is the same "a" as the "a" in "admonish" or in "brawny", even though they're pronounced quite differently?).
Japanese is not really that different in that respect.
Give an ESL or a 5 year old a book about a dog wagging its tail whenever its owner comes in, and they'll probably understand it. Give them a copy of Whitehead's Process and Reality, and see them get confused by the strange vocabulary being used in conjunction with its unusual method of exposition.

Obviously not this specific method but in essence it's just the "consume a ton of comprehensible input" idea. Just that in his case the comprehensible input is provided a by a live person pointing at pictures. This way of doing it might have a small advantage because you're more encouraged to repeat what the person is saying to you, which you probably won't do watching shows by yourself as much.

The dude clearly likes people and enjoys talking to them, so that's his preferred source for comprehensible input. You can achieve the same thing by yourself with the right material though. If I had to learn a language like this I would quit in an instant, but since I already learned English by myself I know you don't have to.

>who is calvin

Here's a guide to names that show up on djt indicating which ones matter

Stephen Krashen: MANDATORY. Premier expert in the field of language acquisition. Has extensive research backing up his "input hypothesis." He tends to repeat himself in talks but it's worth watching a few until you fully understand that the only task of someone looking to acquire a language are either (1) find compelling comprehensible content or (2) find compelling content and use whatever method you like to make it comprehensible.

Steve Kaufmann (lingosteve): HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Polyglot. Has a method to make content comprehensible and a commercial website that implements this method. The website is no good for Japanese, using Yomichan is better, but it's worth watching some of his videos to get a feeling for how language acquisition works for a solo learner in practice.

Khatzumoto: Early material HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, later material IGNORE. Has a method to make content comprehensible specifically aimed at Japanese and wrote extensively about maintaining the proper mindset for language acquisition. Eventually started making up garbage methods he could sell.

Tae Kim: RECOMMENDED. Wrote a Japanese grammar guide, it's not perfect but it's more than good enough to start making content comprehensible.

Matt Bonder (mattvsjapan): IGNORE. Reached a decent level using Khatzumoto's method but became monomaniacally obsessed with unachievable perfection. Pushes his own twist on the method which adds absolutely nothing useful.

Cure Dolly: Grammar material OPTIONAL everything else IGNORE. Has an approach to grammar that is in some ways superior to Tae Kim's but not in any way that makes any real difference. Going through her grammar videos after some conventional treatment might help clarify a few things. Also pushes her own twist to Khatzumoto's method which adds absolutely nothing useful and was clearly constructed in complete ignorance of linguistic theory.

Calvin (calvinajatt, calvinmia, sentenceminer, thesentenceminer, xiaovin, calvininput, boringcalvin): MANDATORY if you can find his writings, which tragically have been scrubbed from the internet. Just as Krashen presents several case studies proving the efficacy of input-based acquisition, Calvin provided an invaluable case study on what not to do. In particular he chose languages with no content he found compelling and became obsessed with Matt's methods over the languages themselves. His resulting struggles are heartbreaking to read but highly illustrative.

Any djt eceleb (jamal, quizmaster, etc): IGNORE.

You guys don't seem to understand this stuff very well. Anime card benefits aren't just better retention rate, it's teaching you words in a way that will make you associate them with real Japanese and make recognizing them pretty much in any context easy. 2 second cards don't, they teach you associating words with a translation which might be even harmful.
Now let us just assume the only advantage of anime cards is an additional 10% retention rate. What effect do you think that retention rate will have over 20000 cards? On your daily review card count and review time, over time your total review time. And consider Anki's default ease behaviour, you will spend so much more time in Anki that the time spent making better cards ends up not mattering.

And just consider this. Anime cards are actually fun. Reviewing soundless word cards in Anki with nothing but a JMdict entry on the back?
Now that is pure suffering. And when you fail a card you don't get an anime context reminder. You just have a definition staring back at you and you will have to make do.

It sounds so bad and it is. Your arguments don't have any weight to them, in fact the only people you are convincing is yourself. An excuse to be lazy and not follow good advice.

Perhaps some anecdotal evidence as well, I talked to people doing pure word cards on my level. Their average lapses were like triple that of mine, their review count and time much higher. I spend less time reviewing and making my cards than they do reviewing theirs.

If you already have like a significant amount of mined cards (let's say like 10000), go into your card browser and sort by lapses. Check out how many cards with more than 8 lapses (leeches) you have.
Reveal after you checked and posted:

>it's teaching you words in a way that will make you associate them with real Japanese
Except you've already admitted you don't even read/listen to the sentences on your cards past the first time they show up and when you fail them, so in that case no it isn't. You're literally just doing vocab cards with a bunch of shit on the back of them that you ignore 90% of the time, and the trade-off for having all that shit there is that your cards take 20x longer to make and incalculably more effort.

>2 second cards don't, they teach you associating words with a translation which might be even harmful.
So this is your problem. You don't actually understand how vocab cards are used.
What you're doing here is projecting what you do with your anime cards (having an English translation of the word on the back and testing yourself on it) onto people who do regular vocab cards.

With vocab cards, you treat the definition on the back just like YOU treat the sentences on your cards. If you forget what a word means or are fuzzy on it, you glance at the definition to remind yourself, but otherwise you just ignore it. You can also optionally have a sentence on the back of your vocab cards to remind you of where you originally encountered the word, and this can be added to your card automatically using Yomichan's Anki intergration when you generate it, so there's no additional effort involved.

>Now let us just assume the only advantage of anime cards is an additional 10% retention rate.
Except they don't even have that advantage Plenty of people have your retention rate with normal vocab cards.

>What effect do you think that retention rate will have over 20000 cards? On your daily review card count and review time, over time your total review time.
This is all bullshit due to what I just said above, but all this fictional "time saving" you're making up here is completely negated by the extra time it takes to make your anime cards. Sorry.

Your cards take more time and effort than vocab cards to make and provide zero benefits over them. Your method is objectively inefficient, but you can't bring yourself to admit that because you've invested so much time and energy into it by now.

>Anime cards are actually fun.
LOL

>Reviewing soundless word cards in Anki with nothing but a JMdict entry on the back?
>Now that is pure suffering.
Strawman. You can automatically add JDIC audio for the words in your deck via Yomichan.
To me, spending 20 second per card manually creating thousands of anime cards is "pure suffering".

In the end, everything you say about vocab cards is based on your own misunderstanding of them, if not outright wilful lies about them, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you just don't know what you're talking about.

yes, ultimately this is the goal but it doesn't magically happen on it's own. it requires practice before it becomes automatic, just like anything else. most people (not all, but most) who have never done formal sitting meditation but think they can just enter a meditative state on the spot are kidding themselves. there's likely still a ton going on in their minds and bodies that they're not aware of at all.

>> No.21434118

yea i'm saying i've heard a few ajatt guys say that they don't particularly have issues only remembering words within the context of the sentences they rep. they are able to remember the word when encountering it in the wild.

however i am also just playing devil's advocate. i don't do sentence cards, but i've thought about it.

>> No.21434120

Anyways in the beginning the most important thing is planted the seeds of vocabulary. You can watch anime and media for years in raw and it will do next to nothing (I tried it). Once you plant the seeds of words and water it with content you'll grow trees of fluency. It's simple but true. Seeds without water, or water without seeds don't work.

People will tell you to seek out easier stuff. Personally I don't like the easier stuff so I just banged my head against this crap for months until suddenly it became comprehensible.

That mans I spent up to an hour going through a single chapter of a manga or close to 90 minutes on a single episode of a show just looking up grammar and words.

exactly, i don't either. in fact i remember it better. context doesn't give you the answer, it just sets up an environment for the word to make sense. you're always going to be encountering words in context anyway so how could it be bad to study them in context? beats me.

>and also take longer
not if you bold the new words so that later you can just review those without reading the whole sentence.

No. RTK and all of it's bastard children are retarded and just delays actually learning Japanese. Get VNCore and just start reading. You're gonna have to look up hundreds of shit no matter when you start, waiting until you "learn" Kanji isn't gonna change that. Especially because the English keywords are often shit.

Also, don't feel like you have to read Yotsuba. Just find something you like. An hour spent on something you're interested in, even if you don't fully understand it, is more motivating than spending an hour on something easy just because you don't wanna challenge yourself. I recommend this: https://lhscan.net/read-undine-of-the-desert-world-raw-chapter-1.html . Lots of useful words to mine, has furigana throughout, dialogue is never too hard, and it's cute af.

I have found the leech system useless. The most common reason for "leeches" to appear is that you got too many new cards in the queue in addition to yesterday's new cards you never learned properly because seeing it a couple of times during 10-15 minutes is not enough for you to learn a completely new word.

japanese is pretty simple. learn kana, do vocab cards from a core deck until you feel like it's getting hard, or that kanji are your enemies. do rtk at this point. you might never feel you need to do rtk tho, then you're one of the lucky ones and can skip kanji study.
whenever you want start reading vns and or watching anime. I've never understood why people recommend manga, but I guess some people really like that medium. I would much rather hear dialogue.
make anime cards out of things you feel you want to learn.

You're going to spend hours upon hours looking up shit regardless. You don't learn a language before using it, you learn it as you're using it. That's why they teach reading, writing, and listening in school at the same time. They don't just plop a dictionary in front of you and tell you to memorize it then say "when you're done, you can have your first conversation or read your first book," lmao. If you wanna hold off until 500 words or so to make shit less painful, that's fine. But you gotta rip the bandaid off eventually.

Also, getting grammar down is infinitely more important than knowing a bunch of vocab. I'd rather look up every word in a sentence and then know what it's trying to say than know every word in a sentence, but have no fucking clue what information the author is trying to convey with those words cause I have no clue how they interact with each other. And the only way you build that skill is by reading (and conversations, but not a single virgin in here talks to anybody but other 4chan users and every single one of them suck at Nip).

>I really want to try meditation, but every 1 second a thought comes and images, or sounds, should I focus on making a black picture and then just focus on breath?
this is completely normal for beginners. think of meditation as taming your mind. you don't find a wild animal and suddenly its super calm and loves you. most peoples minds are like a savanah full of wild animals going crazy all the time. to tame those aminals takes time, patience, and care.

don't try to make a black picture. don't strain. just direct your focus to the breath. in fact, for a really busy mind i'd recommend starting with directing your focus to the sensation of you sitting. literally the feeling of your butt on the chair. just be with that feeling. when thoughts and images arise, mentally note "thinking" or "image" then, direct your attention back to the sensation of your butt on the chair. once it feels like your mental noise has calmed significantly, then move to doing the same thing but with your breath.

and remember, every time you notice, note, and come back, do it with a feeling of accomplishment, like you just did one weight lifting rep but for your mind. the mistake many beginners make is getting mad when their attention wanders. totally unecessary and counterproductive. your mind WILL wander, a lot in the beginning. the practice is bringing it back. bringing it back. then it will become easier and easier, till your mind can easily stay settled on whatever you want it to. best of luck!

Those are probably Chinese glyphs so you need to install a Chinese font to render them (e.g. Noto Sans CJK TC or Noto Serif CJK TC).

Or maybe they're Japanese and you're just using a shit font with poor coverage. Try installing the IPA fonts if the Noto Chinese fonts don't do the trick for you. You could also install the Noto Japanese fonts, but they have a ridiculous line height which differs from Latin fonts (same goes for the Noto Chinese and Korean fonts, actually) so whenever you get Japanese + Latin text on the same line it results in the line height being inconsistent (that said, there is an edited version of the Noto Serif Japanese font called GenEi Koburi Mincho which fixes this problem, along with making other improvements, and is actually a very nice font, possibly my favorite).

i'm starting to wonder if there's any point of caring about word readings anymore.

i already know the readings of most words i will ever actually use to talk to japanese people. almost everything i read now is purely for my own entertainment. if i can perfectly understand a a word's meaning in context, why must i need to know how to sound it out? i know someone will come bitching about literacy etc. but i'm talking pure practicality.

even if i'm listening to something and the word is said, and i don't catch it because i never studied the reading, as soon as i look it up, i'd go "ah, i know that word('s meaning). so that's how it's pronounced" and it's likely it would stick from then on since i already had the image and meaning of that word in my brain.

so yeah, can anyone give a logical, PRACTICAL reason why it's important to continue memorizing word readings when 1. your vocab is already considerably large enough that you can pronounce 90% of what you read and 99% of what you actually use and 2. you can understand the meaning of the word perfectly in context.

all the other quizzes he didn’t show that his knowledge was in any way significant as we either tied or he got 1-2 points more

you either can read or you can’t
like how can you say you got to practice at the quiz and then people like jamal fan and matt come on

Day 36

I feel like I'm only going out of habit now. I've lost all interest in Japanese culture and anime, but for some reason I don't want to stop. It's been almost 20 days since I've mastered kana and japanese is starting to feel like a native language to me. Even if I no longer care about anime or ninja I know I'm seeing this through to the end.

this is the biggest arrogance of noobs, you just have to keep going and the things you thought were impossible become painfully obvious later

my cards take literally 1 second to make and my rep time is 0.5 seconds per card, so i only spend about 5 minutes to learn 200 new cards and finish the days reviews as well.

It kind of fluctuates around thirty minutes right now. Got some extra cards still stowed up from doing like 50 for a bit so I usually get below 30 minutes.

yeah just a joke desu that’d take too much work and be unreliable because of the inconsistencies with unpacking vns
if i was serious about it i’d do this: just monitor audio alone, always record the last 30 seconds similar to shadow play, and check %change in volume over time in order match dialogue. when it’s identified clip it and save it until the next dialogue is identified and repeat. would be pretty easy to make and more consistent.
and yeah ur right it’s a waste of time japanese wise but i’m a CS student so this kind of distraction is an equal priority for me and a lot of fun

Because dictionaries are supposed to be complete, I'd understand if they flat out omitted all the compounds with this word but having some but omitting others is weird.

>dictionaries are supposed to be complete
where did you get this strange idea
dictionaries are about picking and choosing the best entries though I guess jmdict may be a bit different because it's a continually updated volunteer effort
you should watch 舟を編む anime to get a glimpse at how real dictionaries are made (to be honest it's fucking boring though watch at your own risk)
you should load 3-4 dictionaries in yomichan you'll realize before long they all miss shit others have
in the first place why you care man did you really set out to learn Japanese to obsess over dictionaries being complete what a dumb notion
