& I did this as a beginner more or less. It was a lot of fun since I got to see all those interesting kanji, feel their history and so on. Daijirin was really good in that regard because the language is not as overly modern (it's more intelligible but less fun) as in Daijisen and the use examples are just nice. The dictionary I still read deeply right now is the 角川新字源 (2017) which is a dictionary of kanji. I have a vague memory that kanken 1 guy said it was the best, so I bought it a couple months ago. I don't know if it really was that dictionary, but it is a fun and educational one to read.

>>21412814
If you are qm and the deck from the quiz is yours (which is how it is in my head) then I wouldn't have called that baby level. It's more like educated adult level. I do think the difficulty could go up but it'd quickly cross into literary wankery. Also, I'd fail that one hard, due to not being a literary wanker.

Example of how a kanji dictionary is fun and useful (for me): I was having trouble understanding why the reading for the name 師房 was もろふさ (as borne by 源師房, みなもとのもろふさ) because I couldn't connect 師 with もろ. But with this dictionary you can both see how the word originated and evolved and that it indeed has the meaning that suits the Japanese word もろ; and then you can have fun reading about the various words that start with 師 so you can get an idea of how this character has been applied in different ways by the Chinese.

You don't want to translate you want to feel the words on a deeper level, or what they call mentalese. Your brain doesn't actually think in words, so when you say the word in your thoughts you should get feelings, visuals, maybe related words but use japanese if you can instead of english. That's why so many people get a huge progress spike when they switch to monolingual. English is my L2. i couldn't be assed to translate anything I say or hear others say, or read, into my slavic tongue that i was born into. in fact I'd have to be a genius of some kind of enormous brain ability in order to be able to translate large volumes of english or japanese delivered at normal speed as they enter my consciousness. monolingual is just what anyone does, who indeed -does- it. but starting out monolingual may indeed not be the best approach.

Make a frequency list using the text analyser. Then make csv files for that and the list of words on your anki deck that have been gone through so far (which should be the non-hidden cards.
After that, use import csv on python (check this thread here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/38996033/python-compare-two-csv-files-and-print-out-differences/38996374)) to compare the two lists of words, and get another file which will get you the number of non-overlapping words between each list.
Divide the number of non-overlapping words by the number of unique words in the frequency list to get a percentage of how much you don't know, and subtract that from 100 to get how much you already know.

Why 綯 is read なえ?

>> No.21414139

>>21414078
Comes from なう that has been applied to this character. なう means to make a rope out of individual threads. The historical spelling for this verb is なふ. Related word is なわ "rope", historically spelt as なは. 縄を綯う(なわをなう) = to make a rope. 綯 as なえ seems to be a made up name, hence the え form for no particular reason other than that it sounds cool. Imagine the old kana spelling for it as なへ.

>> No.21414165

As an actual name なえ exists, but the prototypical kanji spelling for it is 苗. To me it sounds like "young grass" or "young rice" so... I'd say it's feminine. Related name is 早苗(さなえ), which despite appearing in Touhou is a real life name. さ is a prefix but I dunno what it means. So, anyway, the best way to think of that 綯(なえ) name is that it's a cool spelling for なえ, and this spelling is obtained as described in the above post. The slight weirdness of the spelling choice is because first there was なえ, and then there was the idea to spell it in a Cool way. That is how I would think of it.

>> No.21414186

The apparent contradiction between my posts is because it took me until I already sent the first one to notice that なえ exists phonetically as a feminine name, so my second post is meant to correct my first post. God, I am lazy.

I just finished up formatting the spreadsheet, editing the audio, and setting up the Anki deck for import. Thanks to the person that typed up all these sentences in Japanese and English and added the furigana as that effort is what motivated me to add just a bit more effort to make it a functional Anki deck with audio.

As with my other SGJL decks, I split this into two parts of roughly 500 words each. For beginners, each should take about 20 hours to get through. In addition, there's 90 minutes worth of audio to put in your audio immersion loop. While you can make these yourself from the publisher's website free download, I'll post audio files of the compiled chapters.

These decks will not be shared in the normal way. As these are based completely on copyrighted works, I'll only provide links to the decks to those that offer modest proof of ownership. To do this, just message the proof to my account on the Discord server and I'll send the links. As such, this post will be public.

Also to relate with anybody cool you'll need to drink and chain smoke cigarettes. That's their litmus test if you're cool or not. I'm not a big fan of either. I already know around 4k words, over 1500 kanji and all the grammar in tae kim + some tobira.

I learned English by reading 4chan, I used to spend 3 to 6 hours a day reading posts and looking up new words. After some months I was able to understand pretty much everything, my reading comprehension went from 30-40% to 95%.

Let me guess. You're probably either Western European or South American.
Keep in mind that learning Japanese won't as easy as eigo if your mother tongue is, like, German or Portuguese.
Even if you do speak something else, like Tamil or Czech as your mother tongue, I'm sure you've probably been exposed to English through films or school or something, than you could've been to Japanese.

I think it wasn't so bad because I never got more than 400 reviews per day and didn't dwell too much in a word if I didn't know the meaning immediately, always tried to give each word no more than 30 seconds , if it passed the minute I would just mark it as forgotten. Also I began reading around 4-5k so as I got accustomed to common words it got faster and error rates decreased. I think that around 7-8k I got some kind of intuition on what was the meaning of a word just by looking at the kanji and that skyrocketed my correct rate to something like 95%, decreasing the total words I needed to review to something around 300-330 words daily

Kanji means "Chinese letters" and they were invented by the Chinese for Chinese and nothing else. There are often various etymological mismatches between Japanese and Chinese, as both are unrelated languages. When there was a good "compound" Japanese word that fit to a Chinese lemma perfectly it'd get assigned to that character. I think this is good, because it lets you better process the compounds loaned from Chinese and you can avoid shit like 心良 because from the viewpoint of Chinese semantics it is not even possible to interpret this sequence of words as こころよい.

Don't enjoy anime as much now that I'm learning Japanese. Is it just me? I've been on and off learning Japanese for about two years now, and I've noticed that I find myself constantly cringing whenever I watch anime these days. I don't even know how to explain it. I guess being able to process what the characters are saying more has made me realize how obnoxious the voices can be sometimes (especially female ones), and it just takes me out of the whole experience

im not quiz but subs2srs is bad for these reasons:
1. you need to go through and manually add definitions after the fact and correct auto generated furigana. this means you are processing every card twice. once while watching the show to look it up and understand, second while making the card itself. a lot of wasted time just sitting there playing in anki.
2. you don’t get jpod101 audio to play first. this audio is actually more important than sentence audio because if you don’t have it you have to wait until they say the target word in the sentence audio to hear it and hit next. so you’re either going to be doing slow reps waiting to hear the word or hitting next early and not hearing the word, both are very bad. also jpod101 audio is pronounced clearly and in the dictionary form
3. subs2srs has to process the whole episode when you may just want a few lines

Anime cards should only be used whenever context actually matters for the sake of comprehending a sentence.

What the fuck is the problem with drones and "the monolingual translation" the only reason to use jp definitions is because they're usually better and more detailed, and you should only use them once you actually know how to fucking read. If english is better for a certain word (usually nouns) then use that. If you think it's a good idea to use jp definitions because it'll give you more exposure to the language or some other retarded shit like that then just read more instead.

That’s not a transition that’s just flipping a switch. And it fucks people up and wastes their time where they just sit in qolibri (lmao) for hours to make 50 cards.
The actual way to do it is have a sanseido in yomichan/nazeka then use the monolingual definitions when it’s better to. Also if it takes you too long to read a japanese def on the back of your card it’s a shitty card so it was pointless anyway.

Can anyone who uses qolibri test something out for me?

I'm trying to use a certain font called GenEi Gothic N* (源暎ゴシックN) which is a modified version of the Noto Sans CJK JP font with a number of changes to improve it**, and while this font works completely fine in every other application, when I try to use it in qolibri as either the "Browser Font" or "Application Font" it causes the program to crash, and when I try to set the font in the "Dictionary Style Sheet" CSS it just doesn't work (though in that case there's no crash at least).

Out of all the fonts on my computer, this and GenEi Gothic P are the only ones which cause this problem (bizarrely, GenEi Gothic M, a monospace version of the font, works perfectly fine).

Can someone try installing this font and tell me if the same thing happens for them? Would especially appreciate it if someone on Linux who runs qolibri through Wine like I do could test it, but having a Windows user test it would also be helpful since if there are no problems for them then it would suggest that Wine is having some issue with the font and there's nothing specifically wrong with qolibri itself.

* https://okoneya.jp/font/download.html#dl-geg-all

Alternatively, does anyone have any idea why this might be happening and how I can fix it?

>> No.21421088

>>21421078
It's like when you read definitions in your native tongue, sometimes it's easier to just get a picture or something. Just ease into it with sanseido and by increasing your vocab through reading. It's good overall to get extra input, see words related to the word in questions but treating it as if it's some necessary painful transition is extremely retarded and inhumane

Here's a guide to names that show up on djt indicating which ones matter

Stephen Krashen: MANDATORY. Premier expert in the field of language acquisition. Has extensive research backing up his "input hypothesis." He tends to repeat himself in talks but it's worth watching a few until you fully understand that the only task of someone looking to acquire a language are either (1) find compelling comprehensible content or (2) find compelling content and use whatever method you like to make it comprehensible.

Steve Kaufmann (lingosteve): HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Polyglot. Has a method to make content comprehensible and a commercial website that implements this method. The website is no good for Japanese, using Yomichan is better, but it's worth watching some of his videos to get a feeling for how language acquisition works for a solo learner in practice.

Khatzumoto: Early material HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, later material IGNORE. Has a method to make content comprehensible specifically aimed at Japanese and wrote extensively about maintaining the proper mindset for language acquisition. Eventually started making up garbage methods he could sell.

Tae Kim: RECOMMENDED. Wrote a Japanese grammar guide, it's not perfect but it's more than good enough to start making content comprehensible.

Matt Bonder (mattvsjapan): IGNORE. Reached a decent level using Khatzumoto's method but became monomaniacally obsessed with unachievable perfection. Pushes his own twist on the method which adds absolutely nothing useful.

Cure Dolly: Grammar material OPTIONAL everything else IGNORE. Has an approach to grammar that is in some ways superior to Tae Kim's but not in any way that makes any real difference. Going through her grammar videos after some conventional treatment might help clarify a few things. Also pushes her own twist to Khatzumoto's method which adds absolutely nothing useful and was clearly constructed in complete ignorance of linguistic theory.

Calvin (calvinajatt, calvinmia, sentenceminer, thesentenceminer, xiaovin, calvininput, boringcalvin): MANDATORY if you can find his writings, which tragically have been scrubbed from the internet. Just as Krashen presents several case studies proving the efficacy of input-based acquisition, Calvin provided an invaluable case study on what not to do. In particular he chose languages with no content he found compelling and became obsessed with Matt's methods over the languages themselves. His resulting struggles are heartbreaking to read but highly illustrative.

It's original because the only way to get audio from Japanese media previously was subs2srs which has a million issues already outlined in the thread. (>>21418419 >>21418450 >>21418508). Now just setting up ShareX in a way that makes mp3 capturing easy and comfortable and using it in Anki is already nothing anyone has ever done before. But it's the synthesis of all the tools available that makes the QM approach so good. That is fluentcards for easily working with the subtitles, ShareX for audio and screenshot capturing, Yomichan and AnkiConnect for the creation of the flashcards. But the method goes even further beyond subs2srs when you consider that it works on Youtube, VNs and fucking video games with some slight adjustment: https://streamable.com/fd5j9

What is the optimum # of new cards per day?

Doing 40 even with a retention rate as low as 65% will net you close to 9,500 memorized cards per year, whereas 20 a day with a retention rate of 90% will only net you around 6,500 by comparison.

Though obviously, the more cards you do per day, the more reviews you're going to get, and the more likely you're going to be to burnout or get overwhelmed and have your memory start dumping as a result, so it's not so simple as just "more new cards/day = better".

Has anyone actually done any serious experimentation with this? Everyone just seems to timidly stick to the default rate of 20, and given how unoptimized most of Anki's default settings are, I can't help but wonder if this is really the best possible setting to use.
