Yeah but the turn of the windows era makes them more iconic.
The previous designs were nice but apparently ZUN "stole" designs with some characters so this new reboot was genius since EoSD was such a success that it spawned so much fan works and garnered so much attention that it is still iconic today and overshadows a good portion of all of the other games to come after it.
Yeah the designs might have been nice but it was better to start over with the characters already established and introduce new ones though retconning PC-98 in the process but IIRC, it was said somewhere that it is still canon so long as it doesn't conflict with the Windows Era.
The 'hus you loved then are still there, but unused in the lore.
If PC-98 got more attention, I'm sure ZUN would do something to tie them into the main story but I see little reason why some don't get much art and others do. The getsu sisters I would love to see more of since Doremy is now relevant. Heck is from hell, or rather rules over it as one of the deities, so we could see Shinki who could have potential as a unused character to be the overlord or "creator" while dropping subtle hints at knowing some of the Windows Era hu's with more Maids being introduced back into the game and some other girls of magical or elemental expertise. It sounds like backpedaling but it's a good idea though not everyone will know them.
