but i dunno, at this point the discussion of whether or not touhous are meant to be portrayed as gay or not just comes down to a matter of how you want to see things, but it honestly wouldn't be too far off if a relationship became definite canon

No, it doesn't come down to that, but to how ZUN sees things, and outside of arguably two "definite" instances, ZUN doesn't write things in a yuri way, tease yuri relationships, or otherwise actually support the idea of homosexuality in canon. Not to say he's outright against it, but nothing really supports it.

The two instances, by the way, are "Alice is kind of tsundere toward Marisa in IN, enough that Marisa points it out (and she's annoyed by it)" and "that one time Reimu thought a samurai lady was proposing to her" and that happened in the "not really canon, not really thinking about what I'm writing" times. Every other romance or implication or fact about relationships has been heterosexual. Hell, in the last mainline game we got ANOTHER main antagonist who is a mother.

Throwing my two cents here, I don't think there's any actual merit in seriously discussing the prospect of any form of relationship in Touhou. The series isn't exactly built on romance, and what little romantic (or dysfunctional to some) relationship that exists are only a mere mention.
Course it won't stop people from actively shipping, but as far as canon discussion goes, it's a moot point, so to speak.

Marisa is beautiful, she's kind, she's intelligent, and an all-around great person. She's never committed an evil act, and she always keeps Gensokyo free from the bad people and youkai who try to do it.
