Hey /jp/

Me and my buddy are saving up to go travel around Japan.
But since we're broke 19 year-olds our plan is to bike it everywhere and sleep in a tent. Only spending money on food and things like that.
Maybe we'll find a buddhist temple and the monks will let us stay with them for a while.
Is this plan win? y/n
Any suggestions?

Alas, maybe back in the days of Rurouni Kenshin. Nowadays, even "sacred" grounds desire "donations".

Go back 30 years and maybe

Today you have almost no chance.

You're better off hostel hopping and buying a japan rail pass.

OP, watch the link I posted.

It was made by an old winner of The Amazing Race from three years back, when he decided to tour Japan on foot, from the bottom tip of kyushu all the way to hokkaido, sleeping in tents, w/e.

There are some monestaries and temples that act as hotels. You get monk food, wake up at 6, go see the monks meditate, etc.

We did that in Koyasan (best hidden village in the mountains, full of temples, EVAR). Paid around 7000 yen per night. Fucking awesome.

Google "Shukubou" (宿坊)

Don't camp out. Foreigners in a ten will attract police officers even if you did nothing wrong. Bike only if it's inside a city, cross country biking means you have to know your way around, have lots of time and you're conversant enough with the language to ask for help in the worst case scenario. But still it's not a bad idea.

If you or your friend is black, just give up and do it the normal way.

In the U.S., there are laws against pitching a tent just anywhere you please, and the U.S. is HUGE. There are probably more strict laws in a more crowded country like Japan.

Not only that but would you want to sleep in a tent in the middle of a foreign country? I wouldn't even do it in my own country outside of my own backyard or a camping ground. Be scary as hell.

i don't think we can help you, OP.
i doubt most people here even want to leave their bedroom, and most of us certainly don't want to sleep in a tent

While I agree /jp/ probably doesn't have very many avid campers, I happen to enjoy sleeping in a tent once in a while.

I once slept in a tent in the backyard for a few nights while the wood floor was being treated. It was fun, inflatable mattresses are really comfy while they are inflated.
