Easily. As much as I like Marisa, GoM is written too much like a research paper to my liking. I suppose that was the point of it, but having only one viewpoint makes it kinda dull.

It's better. GoM is neat and all but it's just a databook from Marisa's perspective. I like Marisa and all, but she's no Akyuu when it comes to describing things.

The book isn't bad, but it isn't really good either. It doesn't live up to GoM at all. GoM had in-depth comments on every single spell card. This just has a bunch of jokes and the occasional interesting tidbit. The only worthwhile thing about the book was the short manga segments that gave more characterization to Seija and Shinmyoumaru. And the potential for reaction images I guess. This book isn't even about Sumireko that much even though it's called Grimoire of Usami, it's more about everyone else. People who like cute girls doing cute things will eat this garbage up though, like fast food. It's also a shame no CD was included.

This book just exists so that ZUN could make a quick buck by writing a bunch of nonsense that the lowest common denominator of fans (unfortunately the majority) will enjoy. Grimoire of Marisa had way more world building and gave us a much better view of how Gensokyo and its characters looked. From a lore perspective this book gave only gave us a small update on Seija/Sukuna. The rest is just incosequential filler shit and fan service designed to appeal to moefags. Oh and there's no CD so it was already instantly worse.

It also sucks that it got a Reddit-tier "translation" like VD, someone really has it out for Sumireko. So, no. I don't think this lives up to GoM. In a way it feels kind of rushed. It's essentially just Sumireko's arbitrary comments from VD but spread out to multiple characters. The only worthwhile part of the book was the short manga segment.

The thing is that those people enforce a tumblr-like "ALWAYS SAY POSITIVE THINGS, NEGATIVE ATTITUDE NOT ALLOWED" because they can't deal with rejection, it just "triggers" (xDDD) them and therefore, they drown whatever doesn't suit them, no matter how legitimate those concerns are. They do stuff and become attentionwhores, people don't like it and call them out on it and they go full deflection mode or they play the victim card.
But watch as this IP is going to get banned because I'm pointing out what's actually wrong with those threads while the "group hug" circle just wants marvelous things to be said without rhyme or reason.

The manga part of the book is fun, but the actual judgement of the card isn't worth shit, and they even stopped grading the cards after Seija took over. So it becomes basically a bunch of facebook-like comments without any value whatsoever.
And for your information, I actually read it in Japanese, yes.

It didn't send me to sleep like GoM did, so there's that. Largely thanks to Seija.

I don't really think comparing GoM and GoU is really proper since even though they are both grimoires they are vastly different in style. They are both fun reads both this one I think is a more fun overall since it has actual character interaction (this is coming from a Marisafag btw). Of course, people who don't give a damn about spellcards probably won't enjoy it as much.
