Honestly contemplating starting doing sentence cards.

With vocab cards, I really have to restrict myself to mining only words which I have some familiarity with already because if I mine a word after only seeing it once I'll quickly forget the context I saw it in and will be stuck reviewing and trying to remember it based only on a shitty J-E "definition", and I just don't see it sticking in my head that way. This acts as quite an impediment to acquiring vocabulary because some words show up so infrequently that becoming familiar with them (getting to the point where I can mine them in vocab card format) takes a very long time, and by then one has to ask the question "if I'm already familiar with this word, do I really even need to mine it?".

Some might suggest putting sentences on the backs of my cards as a remedy, but being honest, if I were to do that I have no doubt that I would just ignore them, and I bet so do 99% of people here who do put sentences on the backs of their card already.

With sentence cards there would really be no restrictions on what I could mine beyond the suitability of the sentence I found the word in.

I made a frequency list thing for Yomichan, if you use it. http://www.mediafire.com/folder/4s66t7nsxzzx8/Yomichan_Dicc

That being said, I do like sentence cards. I do sentence cards and then vocab cards to make sure I can hear/read the word with the context removed.

Oh, that's a good idea. The possibility of not being able to reliably read the words on my cards in the wild due to using the sentence as a crutch to bypass the kanji was one of the problems I saw with doing sentence cards, but that would solve the problem.

>>21369578
I spend 95% of my time reading, and ShareX is Windows-only software anyway so I couldn't do anime cards even if I wanted to.

Also, as I said, if the sentence is on the back of the card, whether it has audio or not, I'm sure I will just ignore it.

There might be (I'm not aware of any such program), but it's too much faffing about even if there is. I don't have the autism levels required for anime cards, and they would stop me from being able to mine words from reading (which, again, is where I spend 95% of my time), so they're not much use to me.

>If you are still somewhat of a beginner watching anime is better than reading
I'm not and I would disagree with that assertion. With reading, the words are all there right in front of you and you can move through the material at your own pace, whereas with listening you're having to rely on your (as a beginner, almost non-existent) listening skills and being dragged along at a native's pace.

1. ShareX works on anime, VNs, Youtube videos and absolutely anything that gives off sound
2. It's much easier, not requiring me to mess every time I want to watch something with some bullshit program, instead I press my hotkey twice and got the audio on my clipboard
3. You can't use Yomichan with subs2srs
4. I got free control over how long my audio is, the subs2srs cards cannot take into consideration what actually matters for the context to be intact and will give you broken sentences
5. You can't control what the screenshot is
6. If the subtitles are shittily synced it will literally not work and this is the case often enough
7. Clutters up your Anki with a thousands of useless cards and media information when in reality you may need to mine 3 things in an entire episode making the subs2srs process absolutely banal

The downside to sentence cards will always be that they take longer than pure vocab but you get the added benefit of contextual usage, a hook for recalling vocab, easier recall, and repetition of words in other sentences. I prefer sentence cards but it can be a bitch some days when you don't want to spend an hour reviewing in Anki.

As I said that is a spook. Your ability to understand spoken Japanese is built through more fluency. Unless you're an rtk fag you will build that through reading.

>>21370253
i agree that knowin the language makes listening way easier than spendin 2 hours to watch an anime episode
but i doubt u could only read for 3 years and then start listenin one day and never miss a single line

>> No.21370290

>>21370253
i only partially agree with you. listening is just reading hiragana with your ears. you still have to actually know the words and structures being used and how they come together to form meanings. so your listening comprehension can be based off your reading comprehension, plus the added skill of tracking the sounds quickly enough - which is what most people struggle with.

>> No.21370334

>if ur doin other shit too then why are u counting ur time per day to reach fluency only in terms of minutes spent with ur aniki
i wasn't. i was comparing anki time to the time japanese natives take to purposely study the language.

outside of what they learn in 国語 is just them living life, and the reading and gaming i do in japanese outside of anki is just me living life. the point is having a firm foundation that you can then go out and use as more connections are made from what you've studied formally. it's a cycle where "study" and "life" are constantly feeding each other.

Some people really don't give a shit about speaking and never have. To become proficient at speaking a language you have to actually want to communicate in that language. >RTK isn't what beginners think it is
it really isnt man. beginners think doing RTK will make them magically know all the words that contain those kanji. its such a fucking scam. they should just learn words and start reading and listening.
i saw a youtube video of a guy who took a year to finish RTK, and then went to japan. all he could manage was choppy english translations of individual words, some inaccurate because of course the artificial english keywords of RTK are not a perfect model of how kanji work. he could've done like thousands of sentence cards with that time and actually understand full sentences by then. he couldve been learning actual japanese during that year. RTK is such a scam.

>> No.21371313

>>21371306
i think a lot of beginners on djt think RTK will give them a familiarity with the characters that will make a transition into reading easier. and that's true. it's just that RTK is not worth all of that effort. in the very least if a guy gets 1200 characters in then he's gotten all of the character-differentiating benefits you can get from RTK and should drop it and start reading.

Well, it might be true that it ultimately matters more to enjoy stuff you do than having to do pointless that leads to you or anybody else not becoming happier, but if we're talking about "knowing" a certain language, like Japanese, the highest skill that you could achieve to prove your knowledge of that would be to be able to easily speak or write about stuff that you care about.
Maybe most people here would probably not derive much pleasure or benefit from becoming 日本語で上手ペラペラ, but if they wanted to show other people they can do it, they should do just that.

I'm the one who gave the advice.
I dicked around doing random stuff and studying for an eternity and switching to just reading gave me the best results. I'm still undecided about whether to use an SRS or not, but currently I'm not. I sometimes write down words I encounter often but still don't remember and study them later when I have time. You CAN learn only with reading, it'll just take a while.
But being familiar with the basics of grammar is important to understand sentences (yomichan also often doesn't properly detect stuff so you can't rely on it for what conjugation it is).
The more you do with vocab, the more likely it's going to stick, but if you have a lot of unknown words in a text it's annoying. You still learn stuff by just reading and looking up, but it's just less, so it'll take you longer to get a good grasp of the language. But honestly, as long as you're having fun and understand what you're reading that's fine. Unless you have to prepare for a set exam, but for that you're better of just studying lists of vocab (which doesn't give you a lot of "real" knowledge of the language though), you don't have to speed yourself.
I often sit there and am like: "I'm not learning enough from doing this!" but then I try to remember that I'm focusing to make the journey as fun as the actual goal is. You probably want to learn Japanese to consume content, then do that. At some point in the future you'll be fluent but not being fluent isn't that bad as long as you have fun and understand what's going on.

TL;DR: Don't be stupid me and force yourself through something that isn't what you want. Read if you want to read.

why not encourage trying on ur own first since those are all common kanji and u should be able to come up with something and then google/vndb it after and see if u got it right and/or maybe think about where it went wrong

if nothing else thatll help u get more in tune with naming schemes even if its just dumb donald duck names cuz ull still find it applicable to the greater whole later

any1 who would be wanting to get in over their heads (cuz its so hard right better drive home the fact its hard as to get the permanent crippling going right away) on visual games wouldnt be watching a stupid vid like that theyd just be doing it cuz of their own motivation

Chinese characters represent words of the language using several strategies. A few characters, including some of the most commonly used, were originally pictograms, which depicted the objects denoted, or ideograms, in which meaning was expressed iconically. The vast majority were written using the rebus principle, in which a character for a similarly sounding word was either simply borrowed or (more commonly) extended with a disambiguating semantic marker to form a phono-semantic compound character.[24]

The traditional six-fold classification (liùshū 六书 / 六書 "six writings") was first described by the scholar Xu Shen in the postface of his dictionary Shuowen Jiezi in 100 AD.[25] While this analysis is sometimes problematic and arguably fails to reflect the complete nature of the Chinese writing system, it has been perpetuated by its long history and pervasive use.
Pictograms

象形字 xiàngxíngzì

Pictograms make up only a small portion of Chinese characters. Characters in this class derive from pictures of the objects they denote. Over time they have been standardized, simplified, and stylized to make them easier to write, and their derivation is therefore not always obvious. Examples include 日 rì for "sun", 月 yuè for "moon", and 木 mù for "tree" or "wood".

There is no concrete number for the proportion of modern characters that are pictographic in nature; however, Xu Shen placed approximately 4% of characters in this category.
Simple ideograms

指事字 zhǐshìzì

Also called simple indicatives, this small category contains characters that are direct iconic illustrations. Examples include 上 shàng "up" and 下 xià "down", originally a dot above and below a line.
Compound ideograms

会意字 / 會意字 huìyìzì

Also translated as logical aggregates or associative compounds, these characters have been interpreted as combining two or more pictographic or ideographic characters to suggest a third meaning. Commonly cited examples include 休 "rest" (composed of the pictograms 人 "person" and 木 "tree") and 好 "good" (composed of 女 "woman" and 子 "child").

Xu Shen placed approximately 13% of characters in this category, but many of his examples are now believed to be phono-semantic compounds whose origin has been obscured by subsequent changes in their form.[26] Peter Boodberg and William Boltz go so far as to deny that any of the compound characters devised in ancient times were of this type, maintaining that now-lost "secondary readings" are responsible for the apparent absence of phonetic indicators,[27] but their arguments have been rejected by other scholars.[28]

In contrast, ideographic compounds are common among characters coined in Japan. Also, a few characters coined in China in modern times, such as 鉑 platinum, "white metal" (see chemical elements in East Asian languages) belong to this category.
Rebus

假借字 jiǎjièzì

Also called borrowings or phonetic loan characters, the rebus category covers cases where an existing character is used to represent an unrelated word with similar or identical pronunciation; sometimes the old meaning is then lost completely, as with characters such as 自 zì, which has lost its original meaning of "nose" completely and exclusively means "oneself", or 萬 wàn, which originally meant "scorpion" but is now used only in the sense of "ten thousand".

Rebus was pivotal in the history of writing in China insofar as it represented the stage at which logographic writing could become purely phonetic (phonographic). Chinese characters used purely for their sound values are attested in the Chun Qiu 春秋 and Zhan Guo 戰國 manuscripts, in which zhi 氏 was used to write shi 是 and vice versa, just lines apart; the same happened with shao 勺 for Zhao 趙, with the characters in question being homophonous or nearly homophonous at the time.[

The name is written 大阪 in kanji, but it was written 大坂 until 1870, when the partisans for the Meiji Restoration changed it, apparently to avoid the second kanji being misinterpreted as 士反, meaning "samurai rebellion". The older kanji is still in very limited use, usually in historical contexts, but in Japanese the kanji 阪—pronounced han when standing alone—refers to Osaka City or Osaka Prefecture.
