I took a japanese class in HS for four years, and I'm hoping to continue in college. I didn't really study too much outside of school, except for a bit over the summer to keep myself from regressing, so I started doing kanjidamage a while ago. We never learned onyomi for kanji in class, and barely studied kanji in general, so I guess it's nice to actually learn kanji. I still suck, though.

Yes. Anki is fundamentally there to test your ability to read words. If you can't read a word on your own then you failed the card. End of story.

>but still pass the card if i remembered the meaning
Here's the problem with your thinking. You are not remembering the meaning (unless you're trying to recite the definition from a J-J dictionary from memory, which would be stupid), you're remembering an English approximate, which really doesn't mean anything. It's conscious knowledge, not intuitive knowledge, the latter being the only thing that actually matters and also being something that you can't ever hope to learn or memorize from a flashcard.

No, it's just Kyoto, but the way the grammar works "in Kyoto" is a very natural way to translate it. All the には is doing is adding the nuance of limiting what's being talked about regarding the topic. "There are a lot of temples in Kyoto (but in some other places there aren't)."

People who think you need to train listening separately are retarded. You can’t understand what is being said solely due to not knowing the words well enough and that’ll go away merely by consuming more Japanese. If you understand more with Japanese subtitles use them and enjoy consuming. You will want to watch things without available subtitles at some point anyway so no need to rush it.

>"Big" and "red" are very simple nouns with no ambiguities. Of course, you knew that already which is why you deliberately (and disingenuously) chose to use them to argue your point.
the majority of words in most languages can be accurately described with words of another language, because we're all humans experiencing more or less the same shit. even something more "complex", like the 地団太踏む in that pic is not some mystical impossible to understand concept that you can only know if you've read 50 japanese novels. the english "approximation" describes literally exactly what it means -- "to stamp one's feet (in frustration, impatience, etc.)"

yes, there are things that have important nuances that require a good amount of context to fully get. but your statement that knowing the english def "doesn't mean anything" was a really outlandish exaggeration which i see parroted a lot. it does mean something, which is why people can drill an english def of a word for a while, later see that word again in a sentence in the wild, and correctly understand what's happening where they wouldn't have before -- ditching the english soon after. the english word/description is a temporary conduit for meaning.

over time as more contexts are encountered, the meaning that the english was pointing to/"approximating" becomes sculpted and refined and more intuitive, but for the vast majority of common-use words, that sculpting won't be a complete turnover of what you thought the word meant when you read the english def. it'll usually be more or less the same "meaning" but without needing an english word intermediary to reach it anymore.

That is not true at all. Sometimes when you listen to something you can't even make out the exact syllables that are being said, so you could look it up on Jisho or something. Being able to do that perfectly is raw listening skill and you have to practice it. Having a large vocabulary can give you the illusion of being good at this because your brain just fills in the blanks through context.

the subs are a massive crutch but noone likes to go from 90% comprehension to 20% because your brain cant process spoken language. i think once you get up to high listening comprehension you can turn the subs back on and it wont be as bad but as some point you're gonna have to focus on improving just your listening or you'll never get good at it imo

after that the hard category was mostly a joke but sort of not as i only put things that require both cognition and knowing of japanese to be a good experience - u cant just click ur way thru and have a good time with these

elf in wonderland is a special case cuz the requirement to play that is nothing else but having completed the rest of the elf library also i put it there cuz katakana is unreadable : )

Pretty fucking expensive. The average range translators charge for Japanese is about $0.05-0.20 per word. Most novels and visual novels have at least 100k words (many times even more than a million words). That means if you want to get something like that translated, it'd cost no less than $5,000 just for a 200 pg novel, and more than $100,000 if you're talking about a really long VN like Subahibi or Rewrite.

That seems pretty unrealistic to me. If this was the actual pricing, nothing of VN length would ever get translated. I imagine translators work at reduced rates on large projects, same way that when a retailer buys huge amounts of shit in bulk they get get each individual unit way below RRP.

Japanese literation would be even better! I can go ask somewhere else, though I don't know where. とりあえず、ほんとありがとう。

Hey I actually did read some of leyline back when i was a total beginner and I'll say this: the text is easy. Out of all the stuff I read back then, it was the most comprehensible. Of course it was still hard to read and slow going as hell because I was a beginner, but at least I could make some sense of it. It really, genuinely is kind of boring with a really shitty setup for how the game works WRT routes, but if the only thing you want is to be able to understand something in Japanese, give it a try.
Just remember that if you're not finding it interesting enough to keep you going then you better stop reading and find something that'll captivate you better, don't end up like geyline-kun.

If you believe Krashen, you learn by comprehending messages. If you are reading something where you are comprehending nothing or next to nothing, you are not really getting anything out of it.

The challenge is finding something which is both fun and comprehensible. This can be very difficult early on and you just have to accept the fact that pretty much no matter what you read you're going to have to wade through a lot of incomprehensible input to get to the comprehensible stuff. That isn't however and excuse to go and read something nightmare difficulty because "well, I'm not going to understand much anyway"; you want to aim for something of (relatively speaking) low difficulty where you (relatively speaking) will have a lot more opportunities to understand things.

Without any further or do, I will declare the following, FUCK MATT, FUCK ANKI, FUCK AJATT, FUCK STEVE, FUCK YOGI-CHAN, FUCK JAMAL, FUCK QUIZMASTER, and most importantly of all, FUCK OP.

Now, with that said, I hope we can save this thread from all these people and their cult followers.

Only one truth prevail: learn kanas, and have fun, nothing else matters.

Oh dear. Speaking of the new itazuraneko library, it appears the maintainer is yet to realize that Calibre doesn't automatically insert images from .azw3 ebooks into HTMLX conversions and that the images have to be inserted manually after the fact, so all the LNs in the library converted from that format are missing their images.

This doesn't apply to the old library page on itazuraneko which is just a mirror of the original library. I guess for the new library, the itazuraneko maintainer decided to reconvert fucking everything for some reason.

Hopefully he is aware of this and this is why the new library is labelled as a "work in progress".

I was making the assumption based on the Overlord novels, none of which have any images present, but after checking a different novel which I assume to be converted from .azw3 (based on it being the only format available for that particular novel in the old library) it seems not all .azw3 conversions are missing images.

I've been learning Japanese on Duolingo for about a month now. I am putting 30~60 minutes into it everyday and I've done around half of the modules.

I felt that it was a fun and easy-to-approach tool to help me get started. It's kinda shallow, I can tell that much, but it did help me get through the Kanas and learn basic structure and some kanji without any pain at all. I am going to look into other tools and resources now.

Question 1: I only want to learn Japanese in order to consume raw source material(games, manga, anime, VNs) and type in English. Do I absolutely must learn hand writing techniques or will I be fine just by knowing how to read and type?

Question 2: I live in Brazil and, as you might know, we've got a large Japanese community. It is possible for me to attend proper language classes ministered by proper Japanese speakers. Should I bother?

>the yomichan popup content becoming invisible not what i was expecting
That's not what happens for me.

CPU usage goes through the roof and the parsing(?) lags to hell. With Yomichan, dragging your mouse across text at anything but a snails pace results in the popup not even appearing because it's just too slow to parse the text. If you go slow enough that it does appear, it lags so much that it takes several seconds for it to follow your mouse from one word to the next.

With Nazeka, it can cope with you going through the text at a faster pace than Yomichan, but it's still so laggy and unresponsive as to be totally unusable. Occasionally it just locks up altogether, the screen flashes black and the popup vanishes (if it was even present).

I can't understand how the text being vertical instead of horizontal could have such a drastic impact on performance.

If you spent a dime while learning japanese you goofed. You can kind of rationalize some books but there is so much free content and free programs put out there that will do more for you than anything else. Rosetta, pimsluer, wanikani, duolingo, etc are all just scams to take advantage of people that think you can buy your way to fluency. Spoiler/ you can't. It takes forever and patience and whatever those things give you would be a drop in the bucket.

Read anything you want, really. Everything is going to be hard in the beginning. Pick something you can look up easily - digital text for use with yomichan&co, or manga with furigana. Manga is generally easier than long texts, but you also learn less from them.
The key is that you have to like it. If you don't like it, you aren't motivated to read it and that way you're only going to put it off.

my advice (i've been at this full time for 9 months now) if you want to get good, do VNcore and RTK (the right way, keyword/keywords on front kanji on back, read the book too it's free online if you search google). Pace rtk out for like 6 months so like 12 kanji a day. Pace VNcore out for like 3 months. Then start mining, reading, dissecting anime, and from there you should be able to figure out what you need. Be dillegent with reps and mostly just immerse in native content.

toshokan is common vocabulary thats why it comes first. Sure teoretically if you are going to get 100% fluent you might as well learn everything from a logical order to know where stuff comes from but you want to start reading as soon as possible
you dont need to learn what kanji mean by themselves youll just pick it up naturally just check jisho when you see a new kanji to see its rough meaning or something
by learning toshokan you are learning how 館 is used as in like x-building

considering the fact that there are thousands of studies and data mines on the effects of meditation and the only one you ever bring up is that one solitary plot pulled out of an article you've never read, it seems like you have little interest in actually learning about whether its effective or not (and, most importantly, how different techniques and instructions contribute to its effectiveness or lack thereof, because there are tons of ways to teach meditation and not all of them will produce the same results) and instead just want to confirm your own biases against it lol

I had no issues installing it. Just open the image an inside there is a folder called "product" and just start setup from there. It seems that the autorun can't start on Win10

Have you tried the usual - compatibility and run as admin? That solves most issues with most VNs. Also you might need your PC to be in Japanese or at least spoof the locale.

>not a funnel plot
nor a meta analysis. that's a problem. we need to look at studies in general and not cherry picked ones. what i like about the aforementioned meta analysis is that it shows the effect sizes of a bunch of studies and shows evidence of publication bias in that all of the effect sizes are positive (some negative effects should be expected based off sampling error), and there's a relationship between effect size and sample size. this is a trend in the literature as a whole. i pointed this out before but you misunderstood my argument and claimed i hadn't looked at what the studies were actually measuring.

let's look at some more meta analyses.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30345511
>This meta-analysis reinforces the efficacy of using MBIs for improving the mental health and wellbeing of youth as assessed using the gold standard RCT methodology.
but they find evidence of publication bias and a large proportion of the included studies couldn't be assessed for reliability.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30380915
>In this comprehensive meta-analysis, MBIs appear to be effective in the treatment of insomnia
problem: finds serious risk of publication bias
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29370149
>Mindfulness-based Baduanjin exercise may be effective for alleviating musculoskeletal pain and improving overall sleep quality in people with chronic illness.
problem: finds evidence of publication bias and some methodological biases. sample sizes were tiny and only one result turned up negative.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022399918308705
>Mindfulness interventions are effective in reducing stress and depression and improving quality of life and anxiety, but do not lead to significant improvements in the physical symptoms of IBD.
problem, to quote the authors:
>Limitations of this review are that it has only eight included studies and with small sample sizes which resulted in limited sensitivity analysis and no assessment of publication bias. Furthermore, the quality of individual studies has been affected by poor blinding of the outcome assessors, incomplete data reporting and a relative lack of fidelity measures. The short-term outcomes showed statistically significant heterogeneity and should be viewed with caution even though we used random-effects models. An additional limitation is that included studies measured long-term outcomes at wide-ranging time frames, from 20weeks (Rowan 2017) to one year (Jedel 2014 and Berril 2014). The review showed a relative lack of assessment of biological markers.

contrary to what you claim, i didn't have much an opinion on meditation until i looked at that meta analysis (and in fact my instinct before was that mindfullness probably had some positive effects - boy was i wrong), but there's no reason to ignore arguments based on the motives of your interlocutor. i don't care about your motives. you're simply spreading pseudo-science and i'm calling it out.

I tried this and it didn't work. I tried making an iso out of it and mounting it and it didn't work. Good thing I lost interest in VNs anyways.
