Anyone else found that as they progress further into Japanese, stuff like 敬語 becomes way more interesting? I was reading an article about how to apologize in business situations and I found is really cool. Here's an excerpt from the article

I doubt you guys are into this stuff, but if anyone is, do you guys know of any anime/LN/visual novels/books that has a main character who talks primarily in 敬語? Outside of Muramasa, since I just finished playing that game yesterday.

Probably, I just posted a real nice post about Japanese learning and everyone simply ignored it. Guess I'll post it again.

Who are some Western foreigners with excellent Japanese? Although there are a lot of people from countries like Korea and Taiwan that have excellent Japanese, sometimes good enough to get Japanese people to think they're actually Japanese, excellent Western speakers of Japanese are more rare, due to how much harder Japanese is to learn for people from a Western linguistic background. It would be interesting to see some videos or something from Western foreigners with good Japanese and then talk about how they stack up to the competition.

Taking notes, not drawing kanji while attempting to recall it from memory. Notes aren't engaging and in fact make it easier to forget because you're not actively recalling. But when drawing kanji you (should be) actively recall the meaning and strokes. This will solidify it in your memory.

A great example of this is that artists literally use this method to learn to draw things.

Yeah the problem is I legitimately can't understand anything.
If anything my translations are likely to be wrong too, so it seems like that problem wouldn't matter too much as long as, as you said, the context matches the rest.

Though I do get your point. I'd rather have a grasp (Even if it's wrong, since it will be wrong either way) than go through this VN bored out of my mind, spending most of the time reading seemingly broken words, hoping they're correct. But it doesn't look like I have a choice either way since there doesn't seem to be any separated translations.
I'll just power through this and keep learning grammar until I'm able to form a sentence coherently.

I replaced the name in the sentence with the kana spelling. Thank me later. The added benefit is that this sentence has a lot of useful words in it, so I think it'd make a great card, if you care to.

Gonna be honest with you I've read so much I can't pinpoint exact sources anymore. If you look up the Natural Approach though then you're sure to get something. The main arguments are that, not only does learning kanji take a lot of time, but the natural course is listening->speaking->reading->writing and it's like that for a reason. Not that learning to read is going to permanently cripple your Japanese, but learning to listen and speak first is much faster. Once you're already fluent, learning to read is much easier.

Because usually there isn't a 100% overlap with words. Words aren't the same as in English so you can't map them identically to each other - you need to work with "vocabulary" to "definition". If I do remember a word I can remember it perfectly, because I make sure I remember the hiragana, the definition and the kanji. Along with being able to recall these words at will, knowing each. My requirement for 'knowing' a word is strict. I'm not only trying to read. I'm making sure I'm able to put it on paper as well as recall it's meaning, spelling and kanji.

I'd gladly take 10k good sentence cards over all those other cards I made

Hoping Wareya is lurking. If you are, I have a question about Nazeka.

I noticed on GitHub you just finished adding some "space-saving options" the other day, which I presume will be part of a coming update. Will these space-saving options include an option to hide the kanji and reading information about a word from the pop-up?

When you have the Shinmeikai dictionary loaded, all this information is displayed within its definition, so having Nazeka itself show you this information as well is pretty redundant and just wastes precious space.

Would also be nice to have an option to hide the empty definitions which arise when you have the JMDICT dictionary disabled and a word from it is found which doesn't appear in Shinmeikai.

Are you planning to add support for any more EPWING dictionaries in Nazeka, by the way? Or is Shinmeikai it for the foreseeable future?

How is that doing the same thing? I just have to deal with too many elitist people in my hobbies and areas of work who I'm miles better than. It's hilarious seeing some miserable shithead lecture another person about being able to do something. For example, in animation I come across many people who are unable to animate a punch properly, yet give good advice on it. That's fine as long as they're leading one another in the right direction. Only problem is with people that do this shit and are like you. They attack someone while being completely incompetent in every way, including the fundamentals.

There's no reason to attack someone parroting something as long as there aren't any glaring mistakes that could lead beginners astray. The only thing that would prompt you to attack him is wanting to feel superior, which is extremely cringy. The only reason you'd have for not being the obnoxious prick that you are in this situation is if he said something wrong, or misinterpreted the purpose.

Otherwise, you keep your mouth shut, miserable cunt.

Just thought, if you added this option you would have to make sure it applied only to the pop-up that follows your mouse and NOT to the mining UI. Since you need to click the kanji rendering of a word from the mining UI in order to mine it, if that kanji rendering isn't there then it would become impossible to mine words.

Try changing the fonts used for those fields to actual Japanese fonts. Might be that something causes 2.1 to guess worse than 2.0 which font is best to fall back on in case the selected one is lacking glyphs it needs to render the text.

By the looks of it, Anki is using a separate font here for kanji and kana. The kana font is obviously a Japanese one but the font it's using for the kanji looks Chinese to me.

RTK gives you mnemonics and English translations for isolated kanji. It takes part of the burden off learning vocabulary words, but you've still gotta the readings of kanji in different words/names, and the meanings of words composed of other kanji.
For example, RTK can teach you to identify that 通学 consists of two kanji, the one on the left meaning something like path, and the one on the right being used for learning/studying, but it won't tell you that they're pronounced つうがく, or that they mean going to school. Well, a year and some months on from starting reading and I tried to use Anki again but I still can't get on with it. Made a few attempts but none lasted more than a week before something or other about it bothered me and made me delete my deck and start from scratch.

Deciding to continue down the "fuck Anki" route for now, but with the change that I'm going to make the effort to switch to Japanese dictionaries and manually look everything up (so "goodbye pop-up dictionary, hello qolibri"). I'm going to follow the process Matt describes (minus the Anki part) in his monolingual transition video where you look up the initial unknown word you encounter in your input using the J-J dictionary, then look up any unknown words from the J-J dictionary definition in the J-E dictionary.

Hopefully all this will help to solve my slow vocabulary growth woes. Assuming Moogy isn't full of shit, there should be no reason I can't build up a good vocabulary without using Anki so long as I stop being lazy about the way I look up words.

i kept looking up stuff on grammar guides to clarify things because i would keep forgetting even the most basic things. for example i forgot what the first or second most common usage for the て form of verbs was multiple times and it made sentences confusing but eventually it sunk in.

I'm also thinking of deliberately reading LN scans over digitized versions and playing VNs without texthooking and looking up every word I don't know by painstakingly drawing it into Google Translate or typing out the individual kanji out from words I already know which use them, but that might be going too far too fast.

It would without a doubt get me really paying attention to new words though and really serve to deter me from looking anything up until I was sure I either didn't know it or couldn't remember it.

>>21336065
A big part of the reason I want to switch to J-J dictionaries is precisely so that looking up words becomes more of a pain in the ass, the idea being that it will curb my dictionary abuse and make me actually put in the effort to try and remember "have I REALLY not seen this word before?" before looking things up.

>>21336043
I'm a particularly bad example of someone who doesn't use Anki though, to be fair. I've abused the absolute shit out of Rikaisama, etc. to the point where I've hardly been paying any attention to new words while reading.

My process has basically been:
>see word that i don't immediately recognize
>mouse over
>eyes go straight to kana reading, then definition
>move on
In spite of this, by some miracle, I have still been learning words. I really don't know how, but some have been making it into my brain. I'm sure if I fix my awful, lazy habits I can get my vocabulary growing at a decent pace without needing Anki.

And I'm not even "anti-Anki" or anything really, it's just not a good fit for me/my personality. If other people find it useful, good for them.

QM here. Allow me to be a bit ずうずうしい and use this thread as a bit of a motivator to get me going with shit. I've kind of lost a lot of time on senseless shitposting that I'm not proud of and don't feel good about so I want to set a new course.

So here is what I'll do. For now I have dropped the trip and frozen the quiz chat. My goals for the next few months are
1. Completing Kanken level 6 and 5 in accordance with my method
2. Watching enough anime to do a steady amount of new anime vocab cards (minimum of 20), while also doing my best to consume Japanese beyond that
And less related to learning Japanese
3. Keep up with my uni work and complete this semester excellently

More precisely these are my goals until August 1st. Should I not live up to any one of those points I will delete the quiz chat and publish my trip (and promise to never use a another one). I'll make an announcement post around the same time of the day then.

Sorry I know nobody cares, this is purely motivated out of an egoistic desire to get out of this ditch I am in and I feel putting something on the table like this will help me if only a bit. Can't guarantee I'll stop posting but it'll be less for sure.

Let's get going then, thanks for reading.

>Will these space-saving options include an option to hide the kanji and reading information about a word from the pop-up?
No, probably not.
>When you have the Shinmeikai dictionary loaded, all this information is displayed within its definition, so having Nazeka itself show you this information as well is pretty redundant and just wastes precious space.
That information can differ from the information in jmdict itself, particular if nazeka was trying really hard to find a relevant-seeming word but couldn't find one. It's there to show you if nazeka messed up and did something weird/bad. I could theoretically check if it's identical and hide it then, but it's essentially part of the definition and its formatting can be different from dictionary to dictionary, so it seems like it would cause problems.
>Would also be nice to have an option to hide the empty definitions which arise when you have the JMDICT dictionary disabled and a word from it is found which doesn't appear in Shinmeikai.
This just kind of happens when you fully disable jmdict. I don't want to support hiding entries with no json/epwing definition because it's more likely to confuse people than help them. It's just an extra line of text, anyway.
>Are you planning to add support for any more EPWING dictionaries in Nazeka, by the way? Or is Shinmeikai it for the foreseeable future?
Yeah I want to hide one of the "big three" (daijirin/daijisen/kojien) before I consider the json/epwing dictionary feature "done". I'm lazy though.

it generates a frequency list and then you can import it into anki. the only thing morphman would make sense for are sentence cards which are stupid as fuck. but you're a retard if you would rely on a frequency list anyway. stop trying to rote memorize words you have no familiarity with. what's great about mining is that you can limit yourself to mining words that stick out to you so they'll be a lot easier to rep. now that's efficiency.

It seems like I structured it correctly but it's not budging. I see what you mean now. I skimmed over the instructions and completely missed that they 'mention' separating the py file from the folder. Weird that they didn't explicitly state it. My apologies for being a cunt. Just extremely annoyed, but that isn't an excuse.

im talking about mining decks tho? apparently 'familiarity' means "i already know the word cause ive seen it like 10 times"? whats the point of adding words you already know lol?

your whole argument is fucked. from your position it shouldn't even matter whether or not you add a card to anki because essentially you need to see it multiple times to become "familiar" and learn it, but yet it somehow matters which cards you add? surely it's better to just learn all the new words you see because you're going to have to see them a lot anyway? and it would be better to already be familiar with a word you see in a VN when you first come across it?

1 day. After 1 day I could remember the most common words often used in the VN. After 2 days I could remember more words. After 3 days etc. After 1 to 1.5 years (if averaged out it's ~35-40 minutes reading per day) I needed the dictionary rarely enough that I could have fun reading similarly to reading an English book.

Heisig says go Keyword to kanji for a reason. Lazy kanji even says go keyword to kanji. There's a reason. If you go keyword to kanji you memorize the kanji themselves and realize the keyword was trivial. You can now learn words more easily because of such a strong kanji foundation. So Kanji to keyword is teaching your brain to think of asingle english word when it 'decrypts' a kanji. That should be a red flag.

it's to hit on chicks. he's said it multiple times. it's why he doesn't want to learn a european language. he doesn't find white women attractive.

he takes several-month-long vacations to korea and such away from his wife and kids. but on his most recent korea trip he got bored and went to japan and felt sad that he's losing interest in korea. but he doesn't want to pursue chinese further because he "likes countries that aren't dictatorships" and is considering learning and taking trips to vietnam.
