Although there are a lot of people from countries like Korea and Taiwan that have excellent Japanese, sometimes good enough to get Japanese people to think they're actually Japanese, excellent Western speakers of Japanese are more rare, due to how much harder Japanese is to learn for people from a Western linguistic background. It would be interesting to see some videos or something from Western foreigners with good Japanese and then talk about how they stack up to the competition.

Gonna be honest with you I've read so much I can't pinpoint exact sources anymore. If you look up the Natural Approach though then you're sure to get something. The main arguments are that, not only does learning kanji take a lot of time, but the natural course is listening->speaking->reading->writing and it's like that for a reason. Not that learning to read is going to permanently cripple your Japanese, but learning to listen and speak first is much faster. Once you're already fluent, learning to read is much easier.
