good for you. i'm genuinely happy you're getting quick vocab gains if they're paying off in your reading.

i only think sentence cards are useful for specific purposes, like beginners with a weak grasp on certain grammar constructions, or with words that have trouble sticking without context. that definitely isn't every word though, so it's usually not necessary to do all sentence cards, and depending on where you're at you may only benefit from 2 or 3 for every 100 vocab cards. my take is, throw them in when ya need em and forget about em when you don't. they're just another possible tool with specific uses

I have no doubt I know more Japanese than anyone else in the thread except maybe like 1 guy who knows about as much as me but has been studying 4 times as long. Of course that doesn't mean much. Most Japanese learners however seem to give up before they have reached the halfway point or think they are done after reaching it and never actually attain real Japanese proficiency. This is a phenomenon you can observe in every Japanese learning community online, why would this one be different. How much were you able to get out of it?
I probably went through about 200 words and 50 kanji at most in two semesters.
Most of those kanji weren't even "taught" in class. We just ran into them in the textbook, and I copied them down as many times as I could in my notebook till I could immediately associate their meanings and their readings with their strokes.
They were mostly simple words, like 会議 and 友達 though, but at the time, everything seemed like it would be really complex and difficult to master.

i honestly think most of us would know as much as he does (specifically in regards to reading and understanding japanese text, NOT production, speaking, accent etc) if we had put in the same amount of dedication and time he probably does into THAT SPECIFIC activity (which i'm sure is more than he lets on, but that's for another time). most of us just happen to have spent more time on other aspects of the language and are thus possibly stronger in those areas (if we put in the same amount of time overall as however much he does on just reading and anki).

Learning Japanese is a tremendous challenge. I think we could all benefit a bit from turning down the hostility a bit. I admit I'm not proficient in Japanese yet but I'm doing my best to get better especially in the areas I lack in, but I don't suck and I do observe a lack of more advanced learners in this place. I think there is an issue with how people (especially beginners) act on here and even if my approach to deal with it was wrong it's still an issue.
Yea when people attack me especially unjustifiably I do get overly defensive and hit back and that's due to my personal character weakness, but I really just want us all to be successful. No matter how weird it is coming from me, let's do our best.

Core6k, reading in grammar guides and light consumption of Japanese media. Worked through KKLC on the side. Even if you only know a few hundred words consuming Japanese content is necessity, even if you don't mine anything just putting it on and trying to understand it will yield results.
Started anime mining pretty much directly after finishing Core as that is when I started trying to come up with a way to produce good custom cards.

You have this misconception that adding and reviewing things in Anki is some kind of unbearable time strain, that every piece of information takes up a significant amount of time to review. However I average less than 2 seconds total review time per easy card that I don't have to look at the back for. That means reviewing the card 10 times would equal less than 20 seconds total review time. I wager the interval is years big then.
Fact of the matter is that easy information practically takes up no time in Anki if you are using word cards, so there is no reason to avoid adding things you don't have. It's pretty much worth adding just because it's not in my deck yet.
And it could pay off in another form later, maybe that recalling it is faster when I want to use the word.
Writing this post probably took me longer than I will ever spend on that card.

How is it useful? There's nothing strange about the reading, it's exactly what you'd expect it to be, and it's blatantly obvious what it means from the spelling. There is absolutely no point in having cards for words like that.
