Rate my method

>wake up, do 15 new core2k + any reps in 20 mins max
>spend any other spare time consuming VNs, at least an hour a day often much more
>look up anything I don't understand, be it vocab or grammar or whatever

It's the last step I am uncertain on. Some suggest not looking up all the grammar and vocab and just try to understand the gist of what is being said from context looking up words sparingly.

You'd be better off mining. You get vocab more relevant to the material you're reading that way. If you need audio and sentences for some reason, you can copy what Quiztard does and mine anime using his Share X method (I think M*tt also has a video on this).

You should look up every word you don't know (but at least try to figure it out first, guessing based on the kanji how it might be read and what it might mean), paying attention to how the word is written, not just glancing at the definition and rushing on, but there's no real reason to trouble yourself when it comes to grammar since you can look a lot of it up using just a J-E dictionary when your memory is failing you and you need a reminder of what something means. There are also cheatsheets like pic related which make a lot more sense to use as a reference than re-reading an entire page of a grammar guide when all you really need is a refresher.

If what you're reading has so many new words that you're having to look up several in pretty much every single sentence then you should probably read something else instead (unless you're literally just starting out reading, in which case this is kind of inevitable in anything until you get all the most common words down).

Oh yeah, and if you don't get a sentence, then you don't get it. Move on. That's something you'll have to learn to accept if you're the perfectionist type. Sometimes context from the following sentences will help you figure it out, but sometimes it won't. スーツ背広 (aka 神). He talks fast so it may take a little but getting used to, even if you have a decent amount of input under your belt, but he's sort of a weird guy so you might find him interesting. listening to people who talk fast is good too because if you can understand a fast speaker, naturally, you can understand a slow(er)speaker. Also ステハゲ. He doesn't talk nearly as fast but in a similar vain to スーツ he's not like your average J-Tuber. Aside from that just look up Japanese words of things on YouTube that interest you, that might get you some good results.

There aren't any unless you like virtual youtubers.

There's the normal kind like Kizuna Ai who started the trend who put out short (<20 minute) videos.
Then there's the mass-produced, low-budget streamers who came along later who fall into two categories:
雑談 - Hour+ long videos of them just talking about inane shit.
実況 - Hour+ long videos of them playing (and being really shit at) video games. They don't even play interesting games with stories for the most part, just boring online multiplayer shit.
Don't know how anyone manages to watch streamers. I find them incredibly boring.

You also get hybrid ones like Fairys who do both short videos and streams, but most chuubas either strictly do one or the other.

According to J-J dictionaries, もっす and ぼっする mean exactly the same thing, but they seem to prefer ぼっする (the もっす definition just redirects you to the ぼっする entry). On top of that, す verbs like もっす are archaic and generally not used very much anymore, so most likely it's ぼっして.

Going through the first 1500 words can teach you many common, useful words, but after that, it's mostly a waste of time.
Learning the jouyou kanji along with their readings, plus making up mnemonics to remember them (RTK-style) is much more useful than the core2k/core6k/core10k, unless you're really starting from zero or want to live and work as a サラリーマン in Japan.

Matt intends the deck more to replace Tae Kim, etc. than Core.

Well, I guess it's intended to replace both really. As a drop-in replacement for Core though, it doesn't work since you have to do it as a sentence deck (due to how Matt has formatted the fields), whereas Core is a vocab deck.

The fact that it's a sentence card deck really knocks points off it as a beginner resource if you ask me. As a beginner, you want your transition to reading real Japanese to be delayed as little as possible, but because sentence cards take a lot longer to review, you have to go through the deck at a slower pace, meaning you're stuck in beginner land for that much longer (probably at least twice as long as someone doing all of Core 2K, so about 6 entire months, which is completely unacceptable, especially when you factor in the delays caused by >mediation and RTK that MIA demands on top of that). There's also the problem you mentioned that a lot of the cards just have English loanwords, so you're not even getting any new vocabulary when those come up.

I was curious to see what these decks were like, but after seeing them I still think Core 2K or VN Core + simply reading Tae Kim or Sakubi is the (much) better recommendation.

Are standalone vocab cards really that much faster? I always found sentence cards to be significantly easier to do because they give you context which helps you recall faster. It also speeds you up because it helps with solidifying grammar (Using TaeKim,DOJG,etc, as a reference guide if needed). The problem with sentence cards as a beginner is the lack of knowledge that helps with context, but the tango decks do a decent job of preventing that using the semi i+1 system.

>> No.21268853

Yes, obviously you'll learn more by reading Dies irae than you would learn by reading a 10th moege, but that's only because you've already read so many moege. If you've never read moege before, then reading one would be pretty much just as useful as reading Dies irae, and it would be much easier to do so because it's "easier". Being "easy" doesn't automatically mean that there are fewer things you need to learn from it. An endless stream of incomprehensible noise is obviously worse than a graded reader, even though they're obviously both below reading normal enjoyable content. But the thing is, you're not going after an ideal level of "barely comprehensible". You're going after an ideal level of "things that you are ready to acquire". Most things don't affect comprehension on a surface level at all, but are still very important to acquire, like phrasal preferences, character role language tendencies, and collocations. There's SO MUCH to learn outside of just vocab and obvious grammar that you just can't avoid it even if you're reading something "easy". And with things that are easy to read, you go through them a lot faster.

> A seminal study by Asher & Price [47] in which 8-, 10- and 14-year-old English-speaking children and young adults received an equivalent, albeit relatively short, learning experience in learning to comprehend Russian statements, reported a clear age effect with the adults outperforming the children.

>why do babies pick up on accents yet adults don't.
This is literally the only thing that "babies" outperform adults on. If you don't learn the language before puberty then it's hit or miss for accent, most people won't be able to adopt a perfect accent after puberty. Nobody would think that an accent means you're not fluent though except Matt because he's elitist scum.

>> No.21268915

>>21268908
i mean i feel like we actually forget just how much immersion a baby gets. Like a child can't actually speak properly till they are like 12 and that is even with constant immersion. Compare that to people like matt who achieve a flawless Japanese accent after 4 years and you realize how retarded children are.

>> No.21268917

>>21268908
Babies have less of a frame of reference so they learn the language itself slower, which is why kids don't have a high comprehension level of difficult stuff but are fluent.
The accent thing is seperate; they just pick up sounds differently. The only difference that makes for older people is that without training they are likely to have an accent, which does NOT indicate your actual language proficiency.

The critical period is still taken seriously, but only for acquiring your first language, in addition to the possibility that some mechanical aspects of language like phonetic awareness might require conscious training.

People who fail to fully acquire a first language quickly enough develop "language deprivation syndrome", which cannot be fully reversed. This is what the modern understanding of the critical period predicts. Incidentally, sign languages "count", and prevent language deprivation syndrome.

It's important to acknowledge in what ways something is true before going on to say that it's irrelevant or otherwise disproven.

>why do babies pick up on accents yet adults don't.
You might equally ask, why do kids who watch a hours upon hours of TV every day and get constant exposure to the standard, prestige variety of their language through it still end up picking up the accent of their parents? Accent is a bit special in that it's a way of identifying yourself with the rest of your 'tribe'.

If I interact with people who live near me, my accent signals to them that I'm part of their group, so it helps me to fit in and be accepted. If I go somewhere else though and interact with people, they will immediately be able to tell that I'm an outsider because of my accent, even if we speak the same language. Might be hard for New Worlders to appreciate, but in Europe you really don't have to go far at all to find people who speak the same language as you but with a very different accent.

Accent serves a specific social function and as such you only develop one.

So I have been learning Japanese using Duolingo for 6 months now. I know the general consensus around is that duolingo isn't that good for Japanese but I like it. Forcing me to learn grammar rules by context makes them sick in my memory better but often can leave some gaps that I have to look up on my own. It also keeps me on track for the most part.

One big issue is that I can read but can't write. Like I can tell you that "れ” is re if I see it but I can't remember the hiro from memory. I am also probably behind on kanji as well with the same issues before, I can read it but can't write it.

I do a lot of exposure practice on the side by watching a Japanese news station and other media while trying to translate.

I remember what words look like but I can't write them, while at the same time there are some that I can write, all because I practiced making those connections. Just a matter of practice. Memory means nothing in this case. If you mostly read kanji you're sure as hell not gonna be able to write it.
It's a common misconception in many things that involve understanding what something looks like and knowing how to conjure it up from memory.
If you ever take up drawing you'll understand it more than you want to. It's very frustrating because you know how it's supposed to look but your brain just can't make the leap because it hasn't done it before.

In short it's just muscle memory and people not allowing the brain to get used to putting together entirely different things. For example you can Do you ABCs, but you can't do them backwards without practice or having to think about it. Yet you know the ABCs like the back of your hand.

But you're right, writing them does help. And I'm glad I'm interested in learning to.

As you might've probably seen in other posts here on this "general", the only way to get used to Japanese grammar is just by practicing reading often enough. At first, it might feel more comfortable to mentally translate sentences to English, but sooner or later, you'll be able to generate scenes in your mind just by reading sentences in Japanese.
Also, going through the Jouyou kanji set (using something like one of those rtk + readings decks for anki) can easily be done in less than three months, which will tremendously help you read most of the stuff you'll encounter.
Building vocabulary is good, but actually trying to read is a bit of a separate skill, which you can't just suddenly "get good at".

It is pretty useless if your only exposure to Japanese is through anki. However, if you think of it merely as a tool to teach you readings and approximate translations for isolated words, instead of as the way to actually reach knowlege of a language, then it can be useful. That's why we keep telling people to read eroge and watch anime.
The sentence mining stuff promoted by AJATTniggers is downright useless. Either you understand complete sentences once you what the individual words that make them up mean, or you don't understand them at all.

If you don't want to have to provide translations for words, that's fine, but you'll still have to somehow describe a word using other words which you already know, or, if not, you'll have to somehow link them to some kind of sensation you can remember.
Language is ultimately a proxy for mental images (or sounds/textures, if you prefer), all of which derive from sensations. If you've got no relevant sensation for something, you can only attempt to imagine it by taking characteristics from other memories and putting them together.
Using an approximate translation or description in English for a Japanese word would just link concepts in your mind that have already been set down to other concepts, for the sake of making them easier to comprehend. Attempting to describe words in Japanese using other words in Japanese would just make you have to go through the process of abstraction again, no differently from how it must've been back when you were learning words as a kid.

僕が子供の時に兄からもらったやつなんで時代遅れの機種ですけど、メモリにいいゲエムがたくさん入ってますよ

I'm having trouble figuring what the やつなんで does in this sentence. I'm assuming the literal translation would be "Because I got the thing from my older brother when I was a kid, it's an outdated model but lots of great game are in its memory", and the やつ actually refers to the outdated model, not a person like I thought やつ always referred to, and the なんで is short for なので, meaning that the cause of the next bit is the consequence of the fact that the speaker got the object from when he was a child . Actually I answered my question by analyzing the sentence for this post but I'll still post it because fuck it.

There are 3 options for you:

1. Read Tae Kim for grammar while doing a core2k deck on Anki for vocab (either Core2k or VN Core)

2. Read Tae Kim then dive right into reading. Try to make sense of things by looking up vocab you don't know and referring to Tae Kim or any other grammar guide when something stumps you gramatically.

3. Just read. That's it. You'll have to look up a lot initially, but you will pick up vocab and grammar very quickly. I don't suggest looking up every single word, just enough to get a general jist of conversation.

Nobody can pick a "best way" it seems, or rather the way everybody started with is the "best way" in their opinion because fuck being wrong am I right?
I personally suggest the second option and maybe making your own vocab deck from what you read if you would like, it might speed your memorization up a little bit idk.

今日は。 I have been learning Japanese for 6 months now. I have so far learned 1st and 2nd year 常用漢字 and a bunch more 漢字, as well as words in general oo which I have yet to learn their kanji yet. Right now I know about 260 漢字。 I will have a lot of time learning around the summer vacation and have a lot of free time in general - meaning I can give a lot of time to studying. So I would like to ask: should I try to study as much as I can and aim for N3 or try to study well for N4 (for which I Already know a bunch of kanji that according to the list on Tabgorin, are on it)? Thanks for reading. (:

Agreed.

And people who say it often aren't even using it right. "Immersion" specifically ties into the AJATT idea of an "immersion environment" (i.e. creating a situation whereby you have some sort of exposure to Japanese 24/7, either via a TV playing anime all day, or via an MP3 player, or some other means). Most of the time when people say "immersion", they actually mean "input".

"I haven't immersed this week." = "I haven't used an immersion environment this week."
"I haven't input this week." = "I haven't read or listened to any Japanese this week."

Can anons list some simple words only composed of the vowels, か group, が group and ん?

Far as I know there isn’t really a database where learners can search for words only containing certain characters, so looking for words to use to practice certain hiragana is tough. As I go through the rest of the alphabet I might try to put a database like that together. Seems like it’d be a useful way to practice hiragana and vocab at the same time.

There's these example sentences in the kenkyusha dictionary which use 手術をする with the same meaning that the Core example does.:
手術をして幾日めに退院できるかは本人の回復の早さによります. How soon after an operation a patient can leave hospital depends on the speed of recovery.
私はがんで手術をしなければいけないと医者に言われた. The doctor told me that I've got to have an operation for my cancer.
今のうちに手術をするほうがいい. You had better have the operation before it is too late.
顔の整形手術をしたあと, わたしは自分が別の人間に生まれ変わったような気がした. After cosmetic surgery on my face, I felt as if I'd been reborn (as another person).

But then there's also this one:
大急ぎで患者を入院させ, すぐに手術をした. They admitted the patient in great haste and operated on her immediately.

I guess >>21273082 is right and you could interpret it either way depending on the context. An unambiguous way of saying "have an operation" seems to be 手術を受ける.
手術を受ける have [undergo] an operation 《for cancer, on one's heart》; have [undergo] surgery; be operated on 《for appendicitis》
酒井博士の執刀で手術を受けた. I was operated on by Dr. Sakai. | Dr. Sakai performed [did] the [my] operation. | The surgeon (for my operation) was Dr. Sakai.

I started learning how to write kanji almost a year ago. I wanted to be able to see the kanji in my head when I thought of a word. There were words that I had seen hundreds or thousands of times (私,俺,僕,etc), but I had absolutely no idea what they looked like or how to write them. I'm currently at around 1700 kanji, and I know at least one word for each of them. I'm really glad I started doing this.

As for wasting paper and ink, I started out doing all my reps on paper, but now I only write my new cards on paper and do all my reviews on my phone. I also bought a fountain pen and a bottle of ink because I was tired of running out of ink in disposable pens. The pen is a Pilot Metropolitan.

Actually let me repost it so I can link it later.

The problem with RTK is that it only teaches you to recall Kanji based on English keywords. The result is that you do end up being able to write some things, but you can't do anything valuable with that limited writing ability and certainly can't write Japanese prose. Note how there has never been an RTK retard that passed Kanken despite unending claims about being able to write.

Here comes my method. It has some elements which would not strictly not be required (I will explain shortly) but it is definitely the best way to learn to write. The important thing is doing this after you have learned to read. What I do to prepare for a kanken level is take all relevant Kanji and readings and figure out the optimal way to cover the maximum amount of information in as little cards as possible (I made up a system for this so it's not as tedious as it sounds). Now I use my Anime cards to create reverse writing cards covering all the previously gathered information using the sentences with the writing relevant part being kanafied. Here is an example of such cards:

https://streamable.com/k9enc

The optional element obviously being all the voiced anime stuff, but I add it because it makes reviews fun and I want to enjoy doing this shit.

Now don't you think this is where I stop. I use the Kanken Training 2 game to simulate real tests and add all the information that I didn't get to the deck until I get a perfect score in the simulation. That way I GUARANTEE that I have attained mastery over a kanken level upon which I move on to the next one.

RTKtards probably won't appreciate this. They are simple minded fools that can do no more than follow the most simple of instructions. I spit on you.

I don't have any experience, but it is probably better than a phone because you can write with a stylus instead of a finger.

I posted yesterday that I started weight lifting recently and do my Anki reps while I'm resting between sets. Once my finger gets sweaty it starts kind of sticking to the screen and makes writing harder, so everything just looks like scribbles.

How often do you need to write anything by hand in your native language? I can count the number of times I do this in a year on the fingers of one hand.

Unless you know you're going to be living and working in Japan in the immediate future, then there's no practical application for this skill at all. If you were just visiting Japan and wanted to be able to communicate in written form on the off chance that there was some reason you had to do so, you could just do it in kana. The only reason you'd need to use kanji is if your job required it.

It's a massive time investment to learn not only how to write all the individual kanji, but also to learn how to spell all the words you know using those kanji, and until you do so, your ability to write kanji doesn't translate to anything meaningful at all, it's just a party trick. Writing kanji by hand is by far the single least useful and least important skill in the entire language, despite being quite possibly the most difficult to acquire and retain. It makes no sense at all to let it take time away from you doing other stuff in the language until after you've achieved fluency.

I personally have kanji writing in my daily Japanese regime because it is just super fun to write kanij. Also, I hear that knowing how to write the kanji can make you less prone to confuse similar looking kanji when reading. Obviously I do not know if this is true due to my low level, but this makes sense to me.

you’re absolutely right when it comes to utility, but that doesn’t mean all kanji work has no utility just because the most time consuming ways aren’t worth it. you can work smarter rather than harder. for example writing each kanji you can recognize vaguely at least a few times in some way, even if you can’t do it off head, has the effect of solidifying your memory of it, which can then transfer to reading speed and recognition abilities in subtle ways we’re not even usually conscious of. but it’s wise not to over-focus so much in that area that you miss the gains to be made from simply reading and learning more words and sentence types. but that doesn’t mean completely downplaying it’s importance altogether. it’s about finding the appropriate balance.

There was a long back-and-forth about sentence cards a while back which you can read if you follow the reply chain down from this post:
https://archived.moe/jp/thread/17824728/#17830721
(If you follow it up, you can read an argument about Matt's misuse of the term i+1 as well.)

Back then, sentence cards were quite controversial and discussion about them had a tendency to kick off shitstorms, but now the consensus has pretty much settled on sentence cards = bad so there's not much in the way of heated discussion about them anymore.

If you're looking for a TL;DR on their problems, someone who had been doing sentence cards covered two of the big issues with them the other day:

As someone who comes here every couple days to bully people who perpetuate misinformation while being complete beginners and get into arguments with people who insist that their weirdo supplementary studies are something everyone should do, DJT has actually been a bit better the past few weeks than it was a year ago, despite the general decline in quality in the thread. I have no idea what happened. Maybe quizmaster scared enough mattdrones and koohii drinkers out of the thread to make a difference. Maybe the latest wave of them was a bunch of new years resolutioners and they finally gave up. Either way, keep it up, DJT, you're finally starting to be able to walk again.

On another note. To be more fair to sentence cards than I was in my longwinded argument in that first archive link, they are technically better than every other non-recognition format in >>21274013 and there's nothing about them that prevents people from learning Japanese. They're just extremely time consuming and provide either very little or negative amounts of benefit over normal recognition cards with sentences on the back. Of course, you shouldn't actually have sentence translations on your cards unless you're still using a bad shared deck like Core2k. Image needs updating, Core2k is no longer and assumption. Still there's absolutely no reason to use sentence cards instead of vocab cards and more reading with the time you save by switching.

Back to reading. Keep the sharp knives in the drawer and don't run with scissors, okay?

Yeah I should have watched my mouth when I said that. If what I said was true I wouldn't even be bothering to learn it. There is a whole new world to explore when you learn it. Music, untranslated, unsubtitled anime, movies, shows, books, porn, and even an entirely new section of the internet.

I just found it funny that he'd use it being useless as an argument. He was being so bootyblasted about it that it seemed like he was jealous or was a crab trying to prevent me from doing something that might make him seem inferior. But only because he was so insistent on it being a party trick that I would use to impress people or get a foot ahead of everyone.

I draw a lot and take notes. It's only normal for me to want to have freedom in what I want to produce, which includes kanji. Last thing I'd want to do is limit myself to only being able to speak. Not to mention I could shitpost on paper without reference. Overall I could see many reasons that I would use kanji on paper, but even then I just find it fun.
Something is really up with that dude. If he was just trying to save me from what he assumes is wasting my time, I'm ok with that, but he was being hostile even after I acknowledged that.
