It's the last step I am uncertain on. Some suggest not looking up all the grammar and vocab and just try to understand the gist of what is being said from context looking up words sparingly.

You'd be better off mining. You get vocab more relevant to the material you're reading that way. If you need audio and sentences for some reason, you can copy what Quiztard does and mine anime using his Share X method (I think M*tt also has a video on this).

You should look up every word you don't know (but at least try to figure it out first, guessing based on the kanji how it might be read and what it might mean), paying attention to how the word is written, not just glancing at the definition and rushing on, but there's no real reason to trouble yourself when it comes to grammar since you can look a lot of it up using just a J-E dictionary when your memory is failing you and you need a reminder of what something means. There are also cheatsheets like pic related which make a lot more sense to use as a reference than re-reading an entire page of a grammar guide when all you really need is a refresher.

If what you're reading has so many new words that you're having to look up several in pretty much every single sentence then you should probably read something else instead (unless you're literally just starting out reading, in which case this is kind of inevitable in anything until you get all the most common words down).

Oh yeah, and if you don't get a sentence, then you don't get it. Move on. That's something you'll have to learn to accept if you're the perfectionist type. Sometimes context from the following sentences will help you figure it out, but sometimes it won't. Most of it will help you more to read the newspaper than it would help you to read manga.
Going through the first 1500 words can teach you many common, useful words, but after that, it's mostly a waste of time.
Learning the jouyou kanji along with their readings, plus making up mnemonics to remember them (RTK-style) is much more useful than the core2k/core6k/core10k, unless you're really starting from zero or want to live and work as a サラリーマン in Japan.

Legitimately very useful for beginners. It should absolutely replace core2k as the go to anki deck recommendation. The only real problem is the amount of English loanwords. I suppose they are there to provide a smoother experience that's closer to i+1, but there are really way too many of them.

Well, I guess it's intended to replace both really. As a drop-in replacement for Core though, it doesn't work since you have to do it as a sentence deck (due to how Matt has formatted the fields), whereas Core is a vocab deck.

The fact that it's a sentence card deck really knocks points off it as a beginner resource if you ask me. As a beginner, you want your transition to reading real Japanese to be delayed as little as possible, but because sentence cards take a lot longer to review, you have to go through the deck at a slower pace, meaning you're stuck in beginner land for that much longer (probably at least twice as long as someone doing all of Core 2K, so about 6 entire months, which is completely unacceptable, especially when you factor in the delays caused by >mediation and RTK that MIA demands on top of that). There's also the problem you mentioned that a lot of the cards just have English loanwords, so you're not even getting any new vocabulary when those come up.

I was curious to see what these decks were like, but after seeing them I still think Core 2K or VN Core + simply reading Tae Kim or Sakubi is the (much) better recommendation.

Are standalone vocab cards really that much faster? I always found sentence cards to be significantly easier to do because they give you context which helps you recall faster. It also speeds you up because it helps with solidifying grammar (Using TaeKim,DOJG,etc, as a reference guide if needed). You might equally ask, why do kids who watch a hours upon hours of TV every day and get constant exposure to the standard, prestige variety of their language through it still end up picking up the accent of their parents? Accent is a bit special in that it's a way of identifying yourself with the rest of your 'tribe'.

If I interact with people who live near me, my accent signals to them that I'm part of their group, so it helps me to fit in and be accepted. If I go somewhere else though and interact with people, they will immediately be able to tell that I'm an outsider because of my accent, even if we speak the same language. Might be hard for New Worlders to appreciate, but in Europe you really don't have to go far at all to find people who speak the same language as you but with a very different accent.

So I have been learning Japanese using Duolingo for 6 months now. I know the general consensus around is that duolingo isn't that good for Japanese but I like it. Forcing me to learn grammar rules by context makes them sick in my memory better but often can leave some gaps that I have to look up on my own. It also keeps me on track for the most part.

One big issue is that I can read but can't write. Like I can tell you that "れ” is re if I see it but I can't remember the hiro from memory. I am also probably behind on kanji as well with the same issues before, I can read it but can't write it.

I do a lot of exposure practice on the side by watching a Japanese news station and other media while trying to translate.

I did just pick up Genki 1, i'll skim through the parts I know but is there anything else I could add?

It's a common misconception in many things that involve understanding what something looks like and knowing how to conjure it up from memory.
If you ever take up drawing you'll understand it more than you want to. It's very frustrating because you know how it's supposed to look but your brain just can't make the leap because it hasn't done it before.

In short it's just muscle memory and people not allowing the brain to get used to putting together entirely different things. For example you can Do you ABCs, but you can't do them backwards without practice or having to think about it. Yet you know the ABCs like the back of your hand.

I mean I'm terrified of trying to speak in Japanese because, one, I'm bad and I know I'm bad, and two, I see how triggered people get over someone making a mistake in English.

You can't really say you "know" a language. You can just either interpret it well enough or you can't.

I always get confused between where to use "in", "on", and "at", and I always get these fucking fags shitting on me because they know those three words are a pain in the ass for ESLs.
