The Flash era is truly coming to an end. In 2020 Adobe will stop releasing security updates and remove Flash Player downloads from their website. Now feels like a good time to go back and review the history of a medium that gave life to so many doujin games. What were your favorite Japanese Flash games? Were you involved with the scene (hacking, translating, etc.)?

I started work as a Flash dev. Before that I saw the golden age of Flash come and go right before my very eyes.

I caught Material Sniper when it was still in development, and was actually pretty excited for the other games by that same dev, namely the robot stg one.

I also still play this from time to time - http://dagobah.net/flash/dancing_onigiri_taketori.swf

Then there's that typing game which featured anime song, which was the reason why it got pulled with no existing backups.

I tried to archive some games, few of which I still have now, but a lot were lost through the years...

What the fuck does that mean? Of course you do. None of the alternative open source players is near functional. If you mean that Chrome has a Flash Player built in, well guess where it comes from.

I have a few Japanese things I could upload if people want. Although I'm not sure it would be worth it, it's barely anything, but if someone wants it I will. Also if anyone has the OP game that'd be cool, it was really fun.
While this is sad, and there are obvious dangers in using software that no longer gets security updates, how will this stop someone from playing things that use flash? Also why is it that, on the current version of Firefox something like Kisekae works fine but to open saved .swf files I've had to use Pale Moon ever since that big update Firefox had a while ago. I appreciate someone answering my probably stupid questions.

I don't expect it to be gone entirely and forever. The old player will continue to work and eventually someone will take the open source code that's out there and develop a modern, secure emulator.

I am kind of upset about the state of Flash media archival, though. For example, when I checked how Newgrounds itself converted their popular animations to video I found obvious glitches, wrong quality settings ("high" instead of "low" for pixel art) and, of course, broken replay/bonus buttons. But the worst thing is that losing the interactivity means no Easter eggs. Many classic SFWs that aren't games wouldn't be the same without them.

Flash was/is a massive security vector that Adobe never seemingly could ever fix along with being proprietary so no standards fourm could ever advance it when it was needed (new video codecs, encryption schemes, renderer apt support, etc, etc).
I have a serious soft spot for Flash since I was playing with content on it when Macromedia owned it, but it being killed kinda needed to happen.
That said, I love it and it's truely a slice of a good 15 years of the internet's life and deserves to live on. But unfortunately, it is a bit of a weird one for archival since not every flash swf had all of the data within it's own archive (dynamically pulled from other sources), and not many people cared to backup said swf files even. While I know it's taboo to mention them, the sub reddit, /r/DataHoarder/ does have several archives of thousands of flash sfw media. It would be in /jp/'s interest to help back up all the Japanese flash material and contribute to their shit, since the japanese sure as shit wont back up their own history, has been time and time again that the west has had to do it for them in the internet age.

Japanese and preservation of their old content. What a passionate topic they excell at dealing with (irony). Between host plateforms closing, artists moving on or simply disappearing, so-called personal problems causing the total wiping of valuable and enjoyable content and so on.

I think artists genuinely underestimate the impact their earlier or older works had on their viewers. It looks like they're the absolute last kind of people to experience any form of nostalgia.

The worst is that they get upset if you dare reprinting one of their older and lost works. They don't freacking care about preservation (I only know a few who do).

A good chunk of emerging amateur animation went through Flash for many years and I witnessed its downfall almost live.

Hard to imagine Flash was once hot to the point books were made about Flash artists and very quickly began to fade out even by the late 2000s.

I do have CD-ROMs with tons of those old Japanese Flash animations if interested.

The first one is part of the "有名クリエイターがこっそり教えるFlash作成のウラ技" book released in 2006 by ASCII. This is supposed to be a book about teaching you the basics of Flash with help of famous creators of the time.

The second one is the CD-ROM complement of the "Encyclopedia of Web Animation" book released in 2007. Contains various info and profiles about creators of the time (websites, their productions, etc.).

Unfortunately you won't find all of the creators' creations of those 2 CDs, only a fraction of them, which is really too bad. However, their most significant ones should be there.

Many of them smell the good old times with their simplicity yet their incredible level of creativity and inspiration. Nothing was about showing off back then, only giving good times to its viewerbase and transporting the viewer into a brand new universe. All that with help of mostly stock music (coming from TAM Music Factory and others most of the times), colourful and cute characters, decent stories and no voice acting. Definite proof that you could do amazing things with very little. A far cry from most of lazy productions of today (MMD has tried to keep this tradition but it's getting lost day after day).

About that サディスティック永琳教 "flash" I'm afraid no SWF have ever existed of this, unless someone here explicitly remembers watching an SWF of this. It looks like Niji never gave the SWF to 松樹千年翠 (of which he was member) or they never felt the need to host an SWF on their website (and instead put it on Nico Nico), as this Web Archive capture suggests: http://web.archive.org/web/20110609205554/http://ssm.bz/product.htm

The missing element you see seems to be some sort of FLV player and there are 2 on the page. But both seem to be set to play MP3s rather than a video.
The only existing occurrence which seems to be the original source is this one: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm9995599

The only hope is contacting Niji in person (huge chances that either he won't let it go like this or he lost or deleted it by the time).
