I don't have anything against reading grammar guides and consuming these kind of learning videos on the side, but the fact that you say it's your main study and the fact that you waste time writing all this shit into a notebook just goes to show you don't really know what you are doing.

>Should I finish all the grammar in Tae Kim's guide first? Does that include all 200 plus pages? Or just the basics section?
Pretty much everything in Tae Kim's guide is basic, common grammar, so you'll be less confused when you start reading if you finish it first. If the length is putting you off, you could try the Boiro guide instead which I think is quite a bit more concise. There's also Sakubi but I dunno how long that is compared to Tae Kim.

There's nothing stopping you from reading pretty much whenever you want, it's just that the less grammar and vocab you've been introduced to, the higher the initial learning curve is going to be. If you don't mind that, you could even start reading today.

How can this be before I even have the basics of grammar down? Surely a few hundred vocab and the very basics of grammar is needed to even begin any input at all, otherwise it's looking up literally every word and sentence structure.

I agree that the videos are too slow though. I'm going to change focus to the Tae Kim guide and use the videos as a "refresher" and nothing more. Once I have finished Tae Kim, at least the basics section, I'll start input like reading and listening.

you will have to do this either way, writing something in your notebook 100 times won't change this. You are never going to get basic grammar down without input. You need to understand that everything you do besides input will only give you a very superficial understand of the language. I think learning words and grammar in Anki is fine to do one the side while consuming shit but it shouldn't be your main study and you in particular are going about it extremely inefficiently, just writing the shit they talk about in the video into a notebook. There is no sense or reasoning behind that approach whatsoever.

It is. The best way of reviewing grammar is actually using it to try to understand real Japanese. Try to read things and figure out what they mean. You can refer back to the grammar guide for help but you should try to wean yourself off it as soon as you can.

Grammar explanations are generally bad for various reasons (the best and clearest I've ever encountered are in Visualizing Japanese Grammar) so it's not worth putting too much stock in them in the first place. The grammar guide should just be used to give you the gist of how the grammar works, then you should fill in the blanks by consuming native Japanese media and trying to understand it.

I haven't counted them but there's definitely less I think. At the start I read the basic grammar in pretty much one or two days and then did 2-3 sections of the rest a day each until I was finishd. However it's not like any of the latter stuff ever stuck for me from reading it there. It mostly makes you vaguely aware of things and I'd argue that's enough.

I consulted a bunch of grammar resources when I started reading on the fly and then over time it got less and less. This is how I really got some of these patterns down in the end.

1. The sentences are not ordered by difficulty and there are no translations so a ton of cards would have shit incomprehensible to a beginner which makes the advantage of voiced context questionable.
2. The anime selection would be pretty random and people couldn't just watch 2-3 shows that all their core cards would be comprised of. If people have no clue where the sentence is from, well that also diminishes the advantage of anime cards.

I don't resist the urge, I'm just too big of a pussy.
Honestly, there just comes a point where you realise "wow, 3 months pass in a flash, if i had done this and that for X minutes each day i could've somewhat developed a skill by now"
And that's when you start building a routine.

Just try and do it properly this time.
Even if you can do less per day, it's only the constant exposure to nip that will get you anywhere.

I do suggest focusing on grammar and reading more than anki tho. And if you really wanna use premade anki decks use VN Core, it's leagues above core2k/6k if you wanna get into animu shit fast.

It's useless to speculate how fluent I could have gotten if I had stayed with it longer. It's especially a shame since that included a home stay in Japan and everything.

I'm not really doing RTK right now, honestly. It mostly works out for me like this (I already know a decent amount of kanji, like 700-800):
- read stuff
- write kanji with meaning down that I don't know
- drill those
- write a flashcard and learn it
I haven't been doing that for long, but I've already learnt a lot of kanji and recognize them in what I'm reading, too. I'm actually surprised by the amount of kanji I can learn in a day even though it's tedious / hard.
I just can't deal with mnemonics / stories, rote memorization works better. I can see how it helps people though (also I have no problem with not a keyword but just meanings, because I rather learn the concept and sometimes write a word with the kanji on the backside of the card too)

Hey ya'll. It's Calvin here. As some of you have seen on my Twitter/YouTube over the past year or so, I have a history of popping up, then disappearing. Changing my language, then going back to Japanese. I wanted to talk a bit about why I have been doing that and what I am going to be doing in the future. I believe it is appropriate to go all the way back to March 2018.

March 2018 was when I founded the AJATT method through mattvsjapan and decided that I was going to be learning Japanese. This was quite exciting for me. I was excited to not only learn Japanese, but to also show the world my progress. Well, throughout the journey I struggled immensely. My discipline was out of whack and I held myself to ridiculous expectations. I got to a point where I would literally set deadlines in my Journey that were due 7 years from now. In general I had this "all of nothing" mentality. I figured that if I wasn't doing Japanese as much as I possibly could, then I just simply wasn't doing enough. Due to toxic thinking like this, I struggled immensely. And another HUGE factor that let to my failures was the pressure of people seeing my struggle. I was so terrified of posting a big goal that I have on YouTube, then come 1 year later, I didn't make any progress. So, when that happened, I said to myself that I can "start over" and make things right. I do that by starting over in another language. That way, I can show people a Calvin that is actually making good progress in his language journey. The problem here is that the language I switched was a language that I didn't care enough to learn. I would convince myself that I wanted to learn it, but I truly didn't. So then over time I would eventually go back to the language that I want to learn, Japanese. This is in a nutshell what has been happening. I wanted to post this to be 100% real with you guys. So, where do I go from here?

Well, now I am going to fit Japanese into my life that is practical. I am also not going to get so caught up in YouTube and social media in general. The fear of failure would CRIPPLE me. The fear of being seen as a failure online would cripple me so incredibly hard. So, long gone are those days. I am just going to do Japanese, immerse everyday, do my reps in solitude. I am also going to be okay with things not going exactly as I planned them. Instead of thinking of an end goal, I am going to be thinking of a "trajectory" with my Japanese. This will be a lot less stress and way more practical. I would like to personally thank YogaPants for taking the time out of your day to talk with me for an hour and a half about all of this. Your words truly helped.

I will no longer being saying "K bye" on here or YouTube. I don't want to just drop of the face of the earth. I am just gonna be chill and not worry about all of that extra stuff right now. I am just going to focus on living my life and just incorporating Japanese into it in a healthy manner. My relationship with social media is not very good, so I won't be super active, but I will check in every now and then.

To those who have read all of this, thank you for taking the time to do so. I am happy to be completely honest with you all and I wish you all the best of luck with your goals.

Peace

If you're as good as you claim, you should've
a. gone monolingual a long long time ago, you're esentially learning shitty somewhat equivalents of the actual japanese meanings
b. quit intensive anki usage and used the time to just read instead, going over the same usage cases (from your sentence examples) for words over and over only teaches you one aspect of the word, while actual reading (or any input) lets you pick up on the various different nuances.

>gone monolingual
I have monolingual dictionaries loaded. Whether I use Japanese definitions on my cards or not makes zero difference. This idea that having monolingual Anki cards is an universal standard is an idea held by beginners which I have no doubt you are. It simply doesn't matter.
Answer this: Can you learn a language without a dictionary?
What if I removed the definition from my card entirely and only used the context?
Your thinking that the definition in my Anki cards is a big part of my study is just you misunderstanding how my cards work.

>quit intensive anki usage
I am not using Anki intensively. I am using it for 30 minutes a day and spending the rest of my time to consume Japanese. You incapable of comprehending this simple fact or something?
M*tt, whose dicksucker you are I have no doubt, spent 2 hours on it after years of obsessively studying the language. I am learning casually and I don't see why I need to stick to your nonsensical arbitrary standards when what I am doing works wonderfully.

Mining from day 1 is a bad idea and you should already know why considering how many "just started learning a couple weeks ago" beginners here fail to understand that your anime cards are just normal recognition cards with a little extra motivation behind them or think that the couple extra seconds per created card is a big deal.

The problem with rote memorizing grammar is that there's just too much of it. It's way too hard and writing it in a notebook is incredibly inefficient. The more you read and listen the more you'll notice certain things about the language, and once you notice them you're far more likely to remember them. That's where grammar guides can help - consult them, but don't memorize them before you've read a lot.

Yes, reading is boring in the beginning. It's a huge pain in the ass. I didn't want to do it either. But it works.

i had an epiphany this morning after waking up.

you know how most humans (except young children) are thinking, almost all of their waking hours, without even realizing it? and how some of those thoughts are helpful and useful, while others are just useless, distracting and even harmful or hateful? ex. “fuck japanese i’m just gonna watch english stuff because it’s too hard” or “fuck other people with a different opinion than me i hate them”

and how people with issues like depression and anxiety are living with a constant overload of the ones that are harmful or hateful?

well all of that, all of that constant, automatic, reactive buzzing of thoughts, is like living in a waking dream. instead of just seeing the world, you’re seeing the world through the lens of a bunch of skewed ideas, mostly bullshit, that you assumed along the way and your brain now keeps projecting onto everything. and for most people, the only time this stops is when they go to sleep.

Input and SRS are not AJATT/MIA ideas. These people perceive themselves to be up against a world of language learners who have never done anything but textbook and class work and fail to realize that the vast majority of successful language learners already utilize the core principles that make AJATT work. The reason they look like a cult to reasonable people is that self perception of being messiah language learners who wish for nothing more than to enlighten the ignorant people with their revolutionary ideas, while at the same time showering their figurehead who has done nothing except learn 1 language in the time span of 10 years with cash for the honor to talk to him and participate in his chat. When you've reached that point you look like you got a few screws loose.
Not to mention that these guys attach countless ideas to their brand which are extremely questionable and their cultist gulp up without a second thought.

>>21225312
That's an interesting perspective but I don't think you are really making a point here. First of all I do have two J-J dictionaries loaded and make use of them when the English dictionaries aren't good enough but I'm still thinking that the definition isn't a big part of my cards as I am learning the word from the context that is in my cards rather than the definition. I also wonder if you really make those connections, I'll just say that getting more input is preferable.

yeah you’re right about the first part.
i hesitate to call negative thinking “fun”, imo it’s really just addictive. like you said, the dopamine release, in addition to the pure momentum of said thoughts that feels normal for most people. their bodies are habituated to the inner tension the negativity creates.

but once someone experiences the extreme alternative; no tension, total relaxation of the body and mind, it becomes clear that those dopamine rushes don’t even compare. but most people have not experienced that, other than in deep sleep or very rare bursts of flow state, and thus do not believe it’s possible to be regularly tension-free in the waking state. which is why i think they keep defaulting back to the negative cycles. it’s more familiar and the best they know.

yes

yea these can't be converted to vocab cards time to make a new deck bud sorry
for reference you want three, maybe four fields
1) way the word is written (振り向く)
2) how it's read (ふりむく)
3) definitions, usage notes, other stuff like whether it's transitive or not (these can be separate fields if you want but it doesn't really matter)
4) sentence where you found it (optional)

and then the front of the card should only show the first field, 1), the way the word is written

if you have multiple cards with the same front you should manually combine them into a single card (and ideally also reset its interval and ease), but this is optional

Poop. I was afraid of that. I don't know if I'm brave enough to "start over" plus all the e-celebs made it with sentence cards right? It might not be optimal, but it could still work :-(
Another thing I'm wondering about, I'm just starting to get into proper pronunciation/pitch accent/intonation whatever, and I got familiar with the little numerical accent codes and I'd like to add them to my cards, but is trying to memorize meaning, reading, and pronunciation all on one card too much? I could see myself getting very frustrated missing one of those things and ending up with a shit ton of leeches. I just don't know what the alternative would be.

Also, I've tried doing cards with just vocab on the front, but they never stick as well. Which at first made me think that the sentences were better, but recently I've been wondering if I'm just cheating myself and they seem easier because there's a huge hint on the front. I thought I found the key to success with sentences and immersion, but now I'm not sure and I feel little and weak again.

sentence cards won't prevent you from learning japanese, they're just time consuming and aren't as effective at building your "mental dictionary" (the only thing that anki gives you that matters) as pure vocab cards are
>but they never stick as well
this is because sentence cards are basically cheating yes
you actually learn words from input, not anki, so it's not THAT much of a problem, it just means that they're not as effective as pure vocab cards are
