- training eyes to move and re-focus more efficiently
- purposely reading in chunks of meaningful phrases, pausing strategically between them

this led me to think, how could i prime my brain to process text i'm reading quickly? and then it occurred to me - a skill we probably all learned in elementary school reading classes but have long forgotten: asking ourselves QUESTIONS about the text BEFORE reading.

"who's the main character?"
"what's their personality like?"
"who are their friends, what are they like?"
"what's their objective in this story?" etc

if we ask ourselves relevant questions at regular intervals as we read, our engagement will go way up, and our brains will literally seek out that information, causing our engagement and speed to shoot up.
