I am reading 辻堂さんの純愛ロード, it's quite entertaining with a long common route and a long introduction to each of the main heroines' routes. It has chill and comedic story telling. I don't know about the main heroine's route but what i've read so far has brightened every day i spent some time reading it. Dunno what you are looking for tho. So it might not be your kinda eroge.

I just stumbled over one hell of a "Japanese logic" part in a bonus "story" of Kamaitachi no Yoru (the remake).

A police officer asks "you" for help to solve a murder case. For that you can first ask for what happened in general, or about the people possibly related to the case. The other one will be automatically following. After these two things, you get files for the suspects, which list their responses to what the police asks them. (i.e. alibi) You can view them in any order.
If you ask for what happened in general first, even correctly naming the right murderer afterwards will lead to a failure ending. Without explanation.

I didn't know that a murderer can change(?) based on which information about the murder you view/ask first. Learned something today. Guess that makes the job of the police pretty hard. They can't even load save-files!


I like Kamaitachi no Yoru. The main part is fun, if nothing special when it comes to the story. But all this bonus stuff is so bad. Guess the idea to dig this out, because I have a bit of a fever and didn't feel like doing much else, wasn't so great. Playing this for 5 minutes made it all come back, including that dumb part where you have to randomly try a combination of choices to progress, as apparently that's fun.

The whole point of the game in its entirety as far as I understood is to be a meta parody of different genres. The official website even slyly advertises that "the story will change depending on your choices" which likely won't come off as surprising information to anyone who's familiar with the medium, when in truth it quite literally means the backstory of characters, even genre of the game itself, basically everything arbitrarily changes depending on which route you're in. And unlike some other games delving in metafiction it doesn't even try to give a justification for anything like a frame story or a true route that ties everything together even if it has unlockable routes, it's just meaningless trolling through and through. It feels more like an experimental game or a proof of concept more than anything and attempting to make any sort of sense out of anything will be a futile effort.

Recent EGS ratings are a bit weird. There are many way overrated games popping up, but not EVERYTHING is. For example, february's gacha moege is not any weaker than Happiness 2. Or march's Aonatsu. If anything, it's a bit stronger even. EGS has pretty okay ratings for the gacha one (73 or so I think), while the other ones are above 80, though slowly falling.

Don't know what it is, but I don't think you can trust ratings from games released this year. I hope it's just a coincidence that this started to happen around the time they stopped using IP restrictions for access, so you can access it from outside of Japan without VPN or the likes.

How is Aonatsu fine? It completely and utterly falls apart in the routes. And even common isn't particularly good, though the game does have a good first impression.

One route has its entire main drama based around one silly misunderstanding, and mostly consists out of flashbacks not providing anything. Once the misunderstanding is resolved, the drama is resolved. Which, mind you, makes absolutely no sense. Who the fuck crushes on a girl, realizes he has no chance, and doesn't get over it for many years WHILE staying close to her? The route could've done so many things to actually work, but in the end it was just the good old and cheap "there was never a problem in the first way" thing. Same level as "waking up from a dream" endings. At that point the whole thing was a lost cause, and it didn't help that the rest was kinda focused one something a little else.
Another route was about something, where the heroine in question isn't compatible with. Aside of not being any special in the first place. Like what, you think a person who stays in the shade for their entire life, is cynical, thickheaded and gets into trouble as soon as they open their mouth, magically "fixes" all of that within a month? It felt like one of those routes for a heroine, where the trait(s) that made the girl interesting in the first place were simply forgotten and ignored. My guess would be a writer switch, and the route writer didn't even know about her background or something. It felt like that. Otherwise, an "idol" story is the last you'd come up with. This route is something I would consider barely acceptable for a heroine route.

The game isn't completely horrible. But you have to keep in mind, what an 85 on EGS meant in the past. This is more of a 75.

The key thing to remember is that the game was made in 1998 (1994, but the PSX version is the definitive version). The reason that all of the side stories seem stupid are because you've seen them before in other VNs. The issue with judging it based on that is that the game essentially invented all of the tropes that are in it.

Saying it's bad because of that would be like playing YU-NO and complaining that the time travel setting is cliched, despite the fact that every time travel VN was inspired by / copied YU-NO.

Girls Book Maker H CGs are fucking amazing. I actually don't know which kind of magic they did to make them look like this. The most fappable H CGs in eroge history.

Apologies for poor choice of words. By "worst" I meant there's stuff that's even more way out there than what that anon said, not that the game is bad. I actually liked it for what it was especially since I went into it completely blind, though I would still say it's a very divisive title and the enjoyment one can derive from it most likely depends entirely on how much one likes the gimmick itself and whether they think it can carry the game on its own.

I actually played YU-NO for the first time quite recently and I'd say it holds up really well even today when compared to other games in its genre. However that's something I'd have bit of a hard time saying about Kamaitachi no Yoru for latter's metafiction genre. Not that there's many games to compare it to as far as attempting a similar story structure goes, the closest equivalent game I can think of is Mikan that also had bit of a wonky execution in my opinion but at least attempted to tie all the unrelated stories together in some manner. In that game it was also the main premise, whereas the weirdness gradually creeps up in Kamaitachi.

I accidentally changed this game to fullscreen and now it's completely fucked up for some reason. Whenever I open the game in windowed mode now the screen is completely black (I can still hear the game and "play" it but can't see anything). Then if I switch to full screen the image shows but it gets kinda fucked up during the ADV parts. And if I switch back to window again it looks like pic related, with the game zoomed in slightly, cutting the corners and messing up the graphics.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game but it's not doing anything, it feels like there is some driver or file in my system that remains messed up even after uninstalling the game that I need to delete/reset to fix this issue but I don't even know where to start.

Does anyone have a similar experience with older games? Especially if it's with Unisonshift? How did you overcome it?

That's true. And, to my surprise, it was pretty consistent as well, as far as I've played. Probably better than most other recently released moege.

The CG design itself was a bit lacking though. But that's the curse of moege, which basically don't even need more CG than maybe 1 or 2 outside of lewds. You simple get a lot of CG being little more than "girl plus background". The game has actually over 10 non lewd CG per main heroine, which nowadays is quite a bit, so this effect is quite present.
