ZUN's drawings are special; and the resulting character designs and moe are special as a result. I dare say if ZUN drew standard-issue industry moe, Touhou might still become real popular, but it wouldn't generate nearly as interesting a doujin scene, and I bet it'd sell out worse than Type Moon.
