Learning Japanese to figure out what desu means in the proper context.

>> No.21166897

desu desu~

>> No.21166938

"Does master want Suiseiseki to give him a footrub-desu?" she purred.
"No thank you," I said. "I'm rather tired. You should retire to your box."
"But master-sama, Suiseiseki doesn't like her box-desu! I want to sleep in master-sama's bed-desu!"
"Not tonight. You'll do as you're told."
"Why doesn't master-sama have real girls in his bed?"
"What?!"
"Is master-sama's penis too small for real girls?"
"Why aren't you saying desu?"
"Does he have to use dolls instead?"
"SAY DESU! SUISEISEKI FINISHES HER SENTENCES WITH DESU!"
"Master-sama showed Suiseiseki his penis once."
"DESU! MASTER-SAMA SHOWED SUISEISEKI HIS PENIS ONCE DESU!"
"It was too small even for dolls."
"SHUT UP! SHUT UP! YOU'RE NOT SUISEISEKI!"

With my right hand I snatched a pair of scissors from my desk and mashed them continually into her face. Her little body was smashed into kindling but I did not stop. Until her screams began to sound a bit like my voice, and I remembered that dolls did not scream, and they did not bleed. Suddenly there was feeling in my left hand for the first time in weeks. I lifted it out of the doll's wreckage, covered in splinters and dripping from scissored wounds. How long had my hand been inside there? How long had I been inside here, alone in my one-room apartment, talking to myself, going mad?

The bolt scraped rust from the latch as I stepped outside. My eyes hurt, god the horizon ... it was a deal larger than 19 inches diagonally. But after five steps my breath quickened and my chest tightened and I turned back. Enough for today. Tomorrow I would try for six. A distant memory told me that when I reached two hundred and eighty, I would make it to the bus stop. And then I'd be free of this apartment, of this prison. And then there'd be nowhere in the world I couldn't go.

Least of all the refunds counter at Moemart in Akihabara. For fuck's sake. Suiseiseki finishes her sentences with desu.

you need to do kanji cards for the reason you've already discovered. japanese has a ton of homophones and you have no means of differentiating them in the absence of context without kanji.

If you're having problems with kanji I suggest writing them out (don't overdo it, I do it like 3-5 times).
It lets your brain break it down properly rather than memorizing it like a picture.
Ideally you should do it for every kanji, but when your brain starts to notice the radicals and remembering how they piece together instead of as a vague picture you can starts skipping most of the easier ones.

Just don't skip kanji cause they look hard, you will need them eventually, and the earlier you start the better.

Honestly even the "intensive exposure" thing is starting to feel kinda off to me (and I'm an anki drone).
Most of the english definitions for words are kinda off, you really start noticing this when you read, and there's also words with different connotations but same meaning that are not expanded on in the decks I've used (vncore/core6k).
I guess j-j decks kinda cover this, but even then, do you really know all english words by definition alone?
Do you even know most english definitions off the top of your head, or do you make them up on the spot? Did you cram english definitions as a kid?
The only other anki related way that makes some sense is sentence cards, but you're just memorizing translations at that point, which also seems kinda off...
So are we supposed to just do 100% learning through exposure, or mix in definition memorization as a necessary evil to get through the early boring parts of learning through exposure?
I'm honestly kinda lost on the issue.

it's obviously easier to learn something if you already memorised part of it. if you're reading and you have a vague idea what a word means and also it's pronunciation it's going to be much easier for you to actually acquire the vocabulary even if it requires you to see it many times before you actually grasp the nuance of it

well, like I said, I don't think they do it on purpose, it's just because most foreign learners have close-to-nil exposure to Japanese as a spoken language and primarily interact with the writing. I actually just had a dumb argument the other day with some chinese dude who was insisting that the statement that "kanji are a representation of spoken words, not words themselves" was false. you can also see this phenomenon in people who express the amount of Japanese they 'need to learn' in order to do something or another in terms of the number of kanji, not the number of words, they need.

I don't think google translate is actually that stingy about stroke order, at least not on the level of individual stroke errors. I know Microsoft IME was, but I've tested Google and you can write pretty much every component in completely the wrong order and still get the correct kanji to come out. It really doesn't like it if you draw the components in the wrong sequence, though. Like I can draw 口、世、木 in any kind of fucked up way, but as long as I do them in that order it gives me 喋. But if I go in the order of 木、世、口 it doesn't work at all.

I've seen plenty of people go this route and they sound so awful when they speak because to be able to speak fluently it has to be on an unconscious level. その質問はね、一本の動画の全部のネタほど複雑ですね(*^▽^)/

限るは「限界がある、限界にする」という意味ですね。他の「限る」を使う表現はこの根本的な意味に基づいています。

例えば

カラスが黒いとは限らない = からすが*必ず*黒いとは言えない
つまり、カラスは黒い鳥に限られない

Aに限ってB = A の場合しかBがない。

Quiz performance doesn't equal reading level but there is a correlation and if you can read all the words on the high level quizzes then reading Japanese is no problem. If you can read Japanese you can do the quiz, in fact, being able to see and voice out the words is minimum requirement for reading them.

This is just not true and tells me you don't actually consume a large amount of high level Japanese material, Knowing how to read all the words or even what they mean clearly doesn't mean you understand the meaning of the sentence, it may very well mean you think you understand it though.

I see how that statement confused you and it's my fault for not formulating more precisely. If you read a lot and your reading level naturally progresses to the point that you are capable of doing the high level quiz, chances are you have a high reading level. Yes, I suppose it's theoretically possible to just learn a ton of words and Kanji out of context without progress your knowledge of Japanese, but that's just a strawman. I doubt a person who learns Kanji just for the sake of it without consuming Japanese exists. I at least make all my flashcards from media I consume and I have shared previews of the cards and the guide on how to make them many times.
I suggest you stop trying to read shit into my messages that isn't there at least.

>I suggest you stop trying to read shit into my messages that isn't there at least.
I mean first of all it was in your message and second of all you have only been studying for 2.5 years so there is no way you have consumed enough material to have your actual reading level approach that of a native. This suggests to me as did you first post, because you think that you can beat a native in a kanji readings quiz , that you are equating the knowledge of individual words with reading ability which i pointed out was false.

i feel like baseline literacy rates are misleading because learning new kanji will always be more of a hassle than learning new words in a language like english, and at some point i think japs and probably chinese get tired/bored of it and avoid or completely ignore new kanji.

I haven't beat any natives though. Yes there is more to knowing Japanese than just being able to read words, I'm not denying that in the slightest. Some Japanese people have huge reading deficiencies though and that's a fact. Sure, they are still better than me at the language just because they are natives, but I'll catch up before long as I actually become capable of reading shit when they scratch their head over 捗る lmao. I'm not just improving my reading anyway, I'm working on my advancing my general Japanese knowledge and he quiz is just a fun thing on the side. well, try to focus on some words, see how many times they say certain words a just try to "write out" what they are saying(like turning a sound into clear characters), you don't need to focus much on these things but slowly you start to get more and more things
Also, reading isn't just a meme, it's pretty important, so try to grab a VN or go to syosetu with yomichan and do your best to read
even if you take 5 hours on one chapter with excessive use of a dictionary(jisho, yomichan, etc.), it's still pretty good for starters
also also, you could try something like nogisaka under construction, nogibingo, gaki no tsukai, any live action show to get a different, "purer", japanese

I usually just memorize them by writing them, but currently I started trying to do it with anki, doing it like this:
Kanji on the front
On the back:
Picture I associate with the meaning(s), meanings in english below that, and below an example word (which I don't memorize)

Current method:
yomi on the front with hint field for eng keyword which I only usually have to use once or twice
kanji on the back with stroke order animation, kanji in print, and a bunch of example words
I write them all a few times then I just visualize it in my mind.
I'm 600 in, so far this methos has helped all around. I did rtk before like 8 months ago the way you're describing and it's not bad. Whatever you do just stick with it even after you finish it. You will forget so much if you don't.

Do both and read them side by side.
Maybe start with the translation, and re-read in jap, back and forth, sentence by sentence.
As you will get accustomed to author's manner (J) and that story's vocabulary - switch to reading in jap first, and alt-tab to translation when you stumble on something you don't understand.

If there is also an audiobook available for what you are trying to read - that would be the best.

the main problem with reading translated works is that translations are typically shit just like you should well know from English. and E-J is even worse because the Japanese market is much smaller than the English one, so there are fewer skilled translators. and if you're a learner, you might not even be able to recognize that the translation is shit.

Repeat after me:
-You cannot learn a word until you have seen it used in the wild
-Watch and read native context to learn the language, not the other way round
-Speaking is a product of understanding and instinct built up from interacting with your target language, not from consciously translating
-Speaking is the hardest thing to do (correctly) and is the last step of a language, and early speaking practise does not help
-Expecting a second language to not take the same work as your first language is just disrespecting the task ahead of you

I downloaded the binary from Foosoft's github but it just prints out a garbled mess of 文字化け at me when I try to run it and generates a file with yet more 文字化け + "(invalid encoding)" for its filename. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and there's no example command given on the github page to help me figure out what the proper way to use this is.

The github page just says:
>Zero-EPWING takes a single parameter, the directory of the EPWING dictionary to dump.
So I'm trying to run it from the terminal as:

but, as I said, it doesn't work at all.

I ran as both:

(this just printed the copyright notice of the dictionary to the terminal and then exited)
and
>./zero-epwing [EPWING dictionary directory path] --entries
(this printed every single entry of the dictionary to the terminal and then exited)

What option am I supposed to be running this with to get the file that nazeka_epwing_converter wants?

You're expected to redirect the output of --entries to a file with
>[invocation] > file.json
by the way.

Not printing usage information on blank/simple invocation is a huge mistake on foosoft's part. Then again I guess he never really expected zero-epwing to get used by end users... It's just embedded inside of yomichan-import as far as yomichan users are concerned.

I liked the anime, but the after reading the first two volumes I genuinely feel they are poorly written. They throw a lot of meaningless noise that is only to try to seem "cool" but they lack solid substance and style to carry it. a well written book should flow natural with interesting style and ideas that natural comes to you. haruhi just is bad, kyo ani truly is a miracle worker.
