> mispronouncing new words in english is fine because ur using what u know about english to make the pronunciation in the first place

It's the same in Japanese. Kanji don't have infinite pronunciations, with experience you can learn to take educated guesses as to the pronunciation of new words. I guarantee that Japanese people actually do this.

I only used Russian as an example in a language I assume most people here are unfamiliar with, if that's obscuring the main point then just ignore the example. And if you don't believe it's possible to learn new words from context then by all means feel free to keep using dictionaries forever.

well then yah like i said if u have familiarity in the language u can try on most things

tho readings of words are pretty rough at times and very often u just skip it and not even worry about it

natives do this more than try to force a pronunciation

brainstorm on it for a minute maybe say somethin goofy and then ultimately give up and move on never actually thinking whatever goofy thing u said with low confidence is how u pronounce the word

whereas in english its very easy to pronounce words for a very long time incorrectly but be able to spell and define it from memory and use it properly

why wouldn't it be beneficial?
you're using the language to define new words in the language. which means you're using the language more period, and not having to default back to your native language to understand things, which means you're strengthening your reliance on japanese. and you're being exposed to tons of new relationships between japanese words you already know, and new words you're learning.
there was a time when i learned 道端, and then 行き倒れ a week or so later. this is the definition for 行き倒れ.
飢え・寒さ・病気などで,道ばたに‐倒れる(倒れて死ぬ)こと.その人.
a word i'd recently learned showed up perfectly in the definition of a new word i was learning. if that's not a great link idk what is. and this happens frequently with mono defs. connections galore.

>>21147147
>why wouldn't it be beneficial?

japanese defs are easier to use when 1. they're concise (i don't believe in the paragraph-long definitions matt seems to love, i stick with sanseido), 2. you're used to them and can scan them quickly and 3. you understand most of the words in them (or enough for them to be useful).

if those conditions are met, then not having to attention-switch from japanese to english is actually less stressful and feels more natural when you were already reading japanese.

i also don't believe in the dictionary diving thing, that imo is a waste of time. so if most mono defs (like 70%) don't meet requirement #3 for you yet, then stick with english defs until they do.

Why are you learning 日本語?

>> No.21147191

All you good lads starting Japanese and grinding your core 2k but not reading, get to reading. If reading is your endgame, then it's also your entry point. All grinding those words does for you in isolation is it makes it a tad easier to recognize base words when you encounter them. Reading is the same, you will encounter the same words over and over again and through this exposure they will start naturally coming to you. These core decks are only there to prevent you from drilling words like 幽霊屋敷 which you will rarely encounter until context makes it necessary.

Reposting this that someone made the other day:
https://github.com/kaervin/subserv-mpv-plugin
It's an mpv plugin which sends subs to your browser so you can use your preferred Rikai clone to quickly look up unknown words.

If you need an mpv config, you can steal mine: >>>/g/70499236
sub font: https://www.google.com/get/noto/help/cjk/
>NotoSerifCJKjp-[weight].otf

I also messed with the colors of the default page on which the subs appear ( 127.0.0.1:8080 ) to create a dark version. Just replace the HTML page from the github page with this one (make sure you use the same filename and .html extension -> "subserv.html"):
https://pastebin.com/nWe11bzc

I also changed the font + font size. You can get the font here (or edit the page to change it to one of your choosing):

not just a tad from my experience. words i've repped in anki (granted that i pulled them from context in the first place, and they aren't completely obscure) have a near 100% success rate of knowing them the next time i encounter them in context.

if people doing 2k aren't reading, i agree they need to stop asap. but that doesn't mean they need to drop anki. instead they should switch to mining their own past like the first 1000 words from a pre-made frequency deck.

If mpv for Windows does support scripts but you can't get it to work, try opening an issue on the github page and hope that the author is feeling generous enough to help you and/or make a version that works on Windows.

Video games. When it got to the point that even fan translations were full of rewrites, machine translation, translations of translations, all on top of taking forever to release, I said fuck it and picked up tae kim. Just for example, Aeon Genesis announced they were translating Super Robot Wars Alpha in the year 2007. It's been 12 years and they still have nothing to show for it, other than admitting that the last script they were working with was machine translated and edited by a BR that barely spoke English at all.

Man I feel like a fucking idiot attending Japanese classes at university. Half the lesson is the teacher saying something loud and the class repeating it in unison and it's nothing but comical. There is also tons of trannies and autists and as a normal virile healthy male I feel out of place.
I'm way too advanced for this anyway, but I'm attending because all my Japanese lessons are between other lectures and I get free points.
Nice thing is that this class isn't going at a total retard pace (introducing like 30 Kanji per week together with like 100 words) but as a result nobody except the people who already know a ton of Jap like myself can keep up and you are in a room filled with people oblivious to what is going on.

Well, I honestly can't say that you're missing much. This season is shaping up to be pretty shitty overall, though there are a few things which look to be worth watching.

So far I've watched:
>鬼滅の刃
Absolutely gorgeous art (though that's a given with ufotable). Movie-tier quality and worth watching for that fact alone. Looks pretty interesting based on the first episode too. Recommended.

>ワンパンマン (second season)
Goes without saying that this is great. Recommended.

>異世界かるてっと
First episode was kinda funny. Seems like it'll be a fun, light-hearted watch, but unless you've watched all the shows its parodying then you won't get anything out of it (all the shows it parodies are gr8 though so you should go watch those if you haven't).

>ひとりぼっちの○○生活
Really mediocre. A completely sterile rendition of Watamote where the main character is just a bit shy but otherwise basically 100% normal. Expect I'll drop this.

>賢者の孫
Yet another isekai anime with an OP as fuck MC. Seems okay for what it is, but it doesn't look like it'll be anything particularly special. Will probably keep watching it anyway.

>群青のマグメル
First episode was really mediocre and pretty dumb, but the main cast seems kind of interesting. Hopefully that first episode was just a setting-the-stage kind of thing to introduce you to the world and isn't representative of the episodes to come. If the rest of the show continues like this, I can see myself dropping it.

>世話やきキツネの仙狐さん
Cute but kinda mediocre-feeling. Had higher hopes with this being a Doga Kobo production. Hopefully it'll get better.

I had a bunch of other shows on my to-watch list, but they all ended up getting rated <7 on AniDB, MAL, etc. so I didn't bother picking them up. I would usually be watching about twice this many shows.

I think they just picked random order for all the HSK1-6 words. In fact that's kind of the problem with the deck. If you're not prepping for HSK 5 or 6 a lot of the words are rather unfair. Like one of the early cards is 鈣 (calcium).

The cards themselves are tagged with their HSK level, so it should be possible to just do HSK 1 (or what I'd prefer, HSK 1-3 or 1-4), but I'm so unfamiliar with Anki I don't know how to do that and have it do scheduling and track stats. I also look up that much still, about half a year into studying. It does get better however. The shift is very subtle but I realize I understand way more now than initially, even though I still often check if the words to see if my understanding was correct.

I expect this shift to continue at the same glacial pace for the next few years. Usually words will not stick immediately for me, but unsurprisingly those words who are closely connected to the topic of whatever I'm reading do stick very fast. This effect is not true for just random words, such as adjectives or some peculiar verb that's just used to make it sound more literary.

I started reading LNs in earnest in late 2016, although there was a long period around 2018 where I barely read any books due to laziness and university. Right now I'm reading Haruhi and SAO Progressive, pretty standard stuff.
I read for pleasure, so of course I like doing it. I only look up words if they're really important to understanding the story or scene and I don't "mine" for flashcards or anything. My "rate of acquisition" is probably a lot slower than other people here because of that (I get all my vocab from input) but I'm personally satisfied with my progress. Reading novels is the single most satisfying thing I've used my Japanese for--you only get text, so you're entirely reliant on your brain using pure language to create the images of the story.

Language cannot be translated properly with current technology because a proper translation often rewords phrases into something different to sound natural. So a computer would need to be able to produce its own original phrases while staying in context with surrounding translated phrases that could also differ from the original.

On a new card, when do you pick "good" rather than "again"? I've just been hitting "again" when I don't already know the meaning and pronunciation, "good" when I already knew it pretty well, and "easy" when I rattled the whole thing off despite never having seen it in card form.

Same question for review cards: When to pick "hard" rather than "again", and "easy" rather than "good"? I've been going with "again" pretty much always when I get the pronunciation wrong even though I'm pretty close, and "hard" when I get it but I know it would be a struggle had I not just "again"ed it four or five times in a row. But I can't help but feel like I might be doing it wrong.

Any advice for your 後輩?

That's a good thing. Any card that has reached the leech limit is just a waste of time to review anymore. Either Anki isn't working for that card for whatever reason and you just keep failing it over and over, or it has been in your deck for so long that it's basically stuck in your memory now even if you might screw up reading it out of context on an ultimately meaningless flashcard once in a while.

Any cards in Anki that waste time and sap mental energy that could be spend on cards that aren't a waste of time should be suspended or deleted.

I started learning Japanese kana and maybe 1000 vocabulary on Memrise but no grammar when I was 16.

I entered a good university when I was 17 and chose to major Japanese and Politics. My Japanese grades were always a D until 4th year where I got my first ever F. I should be able to pass this final exam with a D. I'll be graduating soon but I'm somewhere between N4 and N3.

I lived in Japan for 18 months, I did an internship at a prestigious Japanese company in Tokyo (in English). I studied at a Japanese University for 12 months. After that I Lived in a share house in Fukuoka for 6 months. Over this period of time my Japanese got a little better but not by much. Admittedly I squandered my time in Japan, didn't study much. I expected I would just learn Japanese 'naturally' this was a mistake. You need to study.

In politics I was a 'good' student I would always get either an A or a B, never once got a C. My professors always thought my English academic writing was very good but my essays lacked focus.

Now I'm graduating with a degree in Japanese; the sad thing is I can barely speak, read, write or understand speech. I feel awful. Often I will go into class and can't understand the teachers instructions for homework, so I didn't do it. I am the worst in my class. Admittedly I haven't been a consistent with my studying. I am the kind of student who would cram last minute for exams. This strategy works very well for everything except languages.

Japanese has been a passion for me, but also an extreme amount of pressure and stress and this feeling of hopelessness.

After 4 years in University and 18 months in Japan I feel like shit. I can't understand shit; it is frustrating, stressful. I wonder if I have fundamental predisposition in language acquisition.

Now I am left with a question. Now that I will graduate. Should I just... Give up?

Now I have two options.

I want to learn programming, I am interested in machine learning and AI. I could get an good job after a few years if I do take this option.

My second option is to pay 10k USD and go study at a Japanese university for a year.

Programming makes sense financially. I know there isn't much opportunity in Japan for foreigners with good Japanese skills. I am qualified to teach English but I do not want to become a teacher because of lack of career growth and low wages.

People always say "Don't give up!" "Keep trying!". Realistically there is a point in life where you should admit defeat. I don't like to give up on anything.

Is it reasonable for me to give up on learning Japanese? Honest answers are appreciated.

You are studying Japanese at university level, so you are expected to enjoy learning languages. In fact, you need to love learning languages. Man... its a fucking major!

I dont know where you live or how are the colleges of your country, but in my case, language major in colleges are not language courses, you learn the language in an academic way.

You should have majored in something that you liked and should have done a Japanese language COURSE or learn alone like our colleagues here.

Conversation seems to be your biggest problem, right?. Try to focus on it. When you learn to talk, you learn the language... literacy is a whole new ball game. If you even lived in Japan, you should have restricted yourself to speaking japanese only. If someone asks you or wants to talk to you in English, say that you are French and dont know a shit of english (flawless strategy)

To quote good ol' Aristotle,
>THERE are several senses in which a thing may be said to 'be', as we pointed out previously in our book on the various senses of words;' for in one sense the 'being' meant is 'what a thing is' or a 'this', and in another sense it means a quality or quantity or one of the other things that are predicated as these are. While 'being' has all these senses, obviously that which 'is' primarily is the 'what', which indicates the substance of the thing.
The first example sentence would be an essential proposition.
The second expresses something that would fit what Aristotle would call an "accident", that is to say, something that a thing may either be or not be, but that does not belong to what the thing "is".

Just start reading, honestly. You'll start remembering stuff as you read, and you can look up most grammar in J-E dictionaries anyway, so there's no point in re-reading some shitty grammar guide.

A good place to start would be a VN with one of the lower numbers under the "freqlist 95% Target" column from this page:
http://wiki.wareya.moe/Stats

* This pastebin is quite outdated. Replace mentions of "Rikaisama" (abandonware; no longer works) with Nazeka or Yomichan. If you use Nazeka, you don't need any of the HTML files or the Clipboard Inserter add-on since Nazeka has its own built in reader which performs their functions. You might also consider using Textractor over ITHVNR, especially if you're on Linux and having to run it+VNs through Wine:
https://github.com/Artikash/Textractor

You'll probably want to take advantage of Anki as well if you're low on time so you can grow your vocabulary as fast as possible. Do vocab or reading cards; steer clear of sentence cards (take ages to make and review, so a terrible fit for someone who doesn't have much time per day to spend on Japanese).

Try to also take advantage of "dead time", e.g. time spent exercising or commuting to work, to get as much time with the language as possible. If you're in a car during your commute, that might mean putting a bunch of Japanese audio content (not music; you want stuff with actual speech like podcasts, drama CDs, etc.) on your phone and plugging it into your car's stereo so you can listen while you drive. If you're on the bus you could use your phone/MP3 player with headphones, or alternatively get a kindle or something and read Japanese content on it.

When referring to a kid as "anoko", is it used to describe the kid as a girl or is it simply gender neutral?

if you went to the country for THAT long, and didn't come back fluent, yes it is time to give up. Either you aren't as into it as you want to believe because it's been a part of your identity for so long or you really are a cursed idiot that can't learn languages (less likely) you need to cut your losses and give up. The fact that you have to ask at all means I'm right.

I mean ffs, in my case:
>4 semesters mandarin chinese
>2 semesters classical chinese
>A/A- grades the whole way
>never lived in China, never visited Asia, never used it in employment
I'm at 12 years after I last took any formal Chinese coursework, and 14 years after I last took any formal conversational Chinese coursework. I can still read decently, handwrite beautifully, and pronounce nearly fluently. Last time I recited something, I was told I sounded near-native.
That said, my grammar has eroded and with it my confidence. I don't like to try forming sentences, so I'm out of practice with that.
Despite that, I consider myself a success story all things considered. I've done almost nothing to stay current and nothing whatsoever to improve myself until very recently. Despite all that, I'm still awesome.

The only reason classes get a bad rap is because more than half the people who take them are dyed-in-the-wool dekinais and don't have any real interest in language learning. And most of the rest don't put in enough time to leverage that coursework for anything useful.
