Even as a beginner, progress feels really good. My goal for learning Japanese is to get to the point that if I ever travelled, I'd be able to read the signs and navigate without relying on English translations; as well as being able to ask directions if I ever get lost. But, I'm still a beginner. I'm still working on memorizing kana; I'm about 60-70% on hiragana and like 10% on katakana. Still a very basic, early stages learner.

I was playing a Japanese video game today that I haven't played in ages, and part of the process to reset your security password is to solve a captcha that's in hiragana. When I played originally, I used a cheat sheet and copy/pasted the kana into the box. It took ages.Today, I saw the captcha and just typed it out. No cheatsheet required. I'm sure this isn't impressive to basically anyone here, but that was a sign to me that the work I've been putting into learning wasn't wasted, that I'm actually getting somewhere, and that this is worth it.

Thanks for letting me puff out my feathers for a minute, this felt super important to me and I needed a place to post it!

Struggling to think what else the problem could be. To help narrow it down, it would be a good idea to download a few other VNs and try running those as well. If your problem is Windows-related, then the other VNs you try should all fail to run as well. If not, then the problem is most likely the specific release you downloaded.

He's wrong about Anki being less necessary when you're neither a pure beginner nor an advanced learner only occasionally running into very obscure vocabulary.

I've been reading since around August 2017 without using Anki at all, and while my comprehension level now is quite good, my limited vocabulary is such an incredible handicap to my ability to consume media. I have to look up so many words that even if the thing I'm reading/watch is giving me very little difficulty in terms of grammar, it still takes a lot of effort for me to read/watch it.

I was one of the people who took the tripfag's discord vocabulary quiz, and while I didn't go into it expecting to win, I expected to at least do okay. Instead, my performance turned out to be embarrassingly bad. Sometimes I failed to answer the questions in time due to my slow typing speed, but for a lot of the words that came up in the quiz I simply couldn't even guess at what they were. In the end, I only managed to hold my own against an Anki user who has been studying for around third of the time that I have been.

The fact is, until your vocabulary reaches a point where you're only running into one new word every few sentences or something like that, the constant barrage of unknown words, often several per sentence, makes it incredibly difficult to memorize anything but the most common ones which are showing up over and over again. Any word which you aren't being repeatedly beaten over the head with is just not going to have a chance to sink in because it will be buried under an ocean of others just like it.

I don't know how Moogy pulled off this nothing-but-VNs-and-anime thing (maybe it was thanks to the more manual and involved methods he had to resort to in order to look up words back in his day which made him pay more attention to them and thus made them stick better in his head), but it's not working for me. I'm in a situation now where my grammar comprehension is leagues ahead of my vocabulary level, so while I should be able to indulge in more intermediate content by now, something as simple as just consuming slice of life anime is still "hard" for me because of the vocabulary bottleneck I'm suffering from.

Had I been doing Anki all this time, I would probably have a vocabulary of around 12k words by now, but instead it's more like a third of that. I think I've finally reached the point where I'm going to have to cave in and start using it.

After some point you need to get comfortable enough in your L2 to understand words in context even if you can't come up with an exact correspondence in your L1 though. This is a skill that Anki vocabulary cards will never teach and I feel it's the most important one. It's somewhat closely related to the idea of going monolingual though.

Making 20k bilingual Anki cards is really not the way to learn either. At that point you're relying on translations way too much.

Fantasy, sorta. Chuunige, maybe but not really. Isekai, no. MC belongs in his time period, but is often an outcast. The quintessential wuxia novel, 神鵰俠侶 is basically "local social outcast becomes national hero after marrying his female kung fu teacher". A Chinese friend of mine once described the whole concept of 江湖 (common phrase in these novels referring to the "world of martial artists") as being basically gang wars in middle China.

Honestly the best analogue to wuxia in Japanese stuff is 北斗の拳. But for the post apocalyptic setting, it shares almost all the essential tropes: A war among martial artists, a tragic beauty (who may be a martial artist in her own right), the dehumanization of revenge and becoming rehumanized through exposure to society, the strong protect the weak from the not-quite-as-strong who torment them.

沒問題。 If you haven't learned the kanji for Chinese yet, do traditional first, and just pick up simplified afterwards if there's some mainland stuff you watch to read/watch. I'm going through a simplified book right now, and it was confusing and disorienting at first (sometimes rage inducing because of how the commies really ruined some characters), but I'm having an easy time now since I've matched most of them to the traditional versions in my head as I went along.

It's just been over 10 years and I literally can't do anything but read basic sentences and look up shit in the dictionary (though weirdly enough my speaking is still quite good if I have a pinyin script in front of me lol).

For what it's worth, when I took it in college we started with traditional and moved to simplified after the 2nd semester. Classical/literary was all in traditional again (of course).

His section on translation seems fairly uninformed. Coming from a professional translator with several years of experience. I don't know about the future but right now media localization companies are expanding and pawing for good translators, as they have been for a decent number of years. You won't be forced to deal with manuals or whatever for years to build up experience. One company I just sent an email asking to join, they gave me a test, I passed, and that was that. I was working on compelling media. The real question is just "are you good enough at Japanese", not "how many years of manuals have you translated." If you want to work on compelling media that suits your interests you can do so the second you're good at Japanese. Right now anyway. The market might be a lot different in 5 years.

Going to ignore his minor uninformed points and tackle the one he described as the major factor: "All translations suck". This is a common sentiment. I can understand it. Translation does fundamentally alter the text and generally you will be failing to express the same idea as the Japanese in the same way. Sure. But that doesn't mean the translation sucks. I think the mistake Matt's making here, and the mistake I think a lot of people unfamiliar with translation make, is that it really does not fucking matter how much shit is lost in translation. Like, it really doesn't matter.

He mentions 逆ギレ as an example of a Japanese word that will be lost in translation since English doesn't have an exact equivalent. Sure. Who gives a fuck? It's not a big deal. So you have to reword the conversation in English a bit to cover for the lost word. Who cares? The resulting conversation won't be meaningfully different. It's not like the fundamental sentence structure and words used in Japanese are an almighty holy grail of brilliance, and changing them at all will result in a sucky translation. I might go so far as to say the most important thing to know as a translator is how little the Japanese text itself actually matters. That's somewhat of an exaggeration, but seriously. Specific word choice tends to be the result of cultural habit, like saying a common idiom since it's common in that culture. It's not like the usage of that idiom is suddenly a supremely important concept that will forever be lost in English due to a similar idiom not being present. It's just expressing an idea and rewording that idea to fit in English is not a big deal and does not impact much. The overall experience between a Japanese work and that work properly translated into English will be nigh identical. An autistic poring through the TL files will notice a fair amount of difference, but with a bit of thought, you can generally see that the changes barely matter in the grand scheme of things.

Anyway I could go on because translation is a complex subject but yeah. Matt's view on translation is very uninformed. I'm no e-celeb bird watcher so I can't say much but it feels like a lot of these "Japanese Learning Personalities" that have cropped up over the past few years have very weird, very uninformed perspectives on translation, as if one among their ranks had a bad experience and then poisoned everyone else's opinion with it. Translation is a pretty solid job that pays well and feels meaningful, not to mention how you can generally work from home. (Several of these companies have offices in Japan and it's very easy to ask for them to sponsor a visa which will enable you to live in Japan for a bit if you want.) I'm really baffled by how many of these people are warning learners off becoming a translator. I think they could be ruining a few people's lives by turning them away from a path that would have brought much fulfillment to their lives.

The one person who had a solid take on translation was Dogen, who said that the translation field is growing more competitive and shrinking over time. There are an increasing number of translators, and machine translation is growing in size. It sounds ridiculous but translation agencies in particular have been kickstarting machine translation initiatives where they shift focus to hiring people to edit machine translation rather than translators. Faster and saves costs. It remains to be seen how much the translation field will shrink due to this but it is a significant concern. The problem with this position, however, is precisely that the true effects remain to be seen. Maybe the field won't shrink that much. Maybe it'll take 30-40+ years to really be impacted negatively. Maybe WW3 will start in 10 years and destroy the world. You have no way of knowing any of this, so avoiding a career path you're interested in solely out of fear for potential problems that might not come to pass seems pretty silly to me. It's good to keep your options open, though.

AI's a real problem right now, companies built around machine translations are entering the market and competing, sometimes very well, but it's hard to tell how much of a problem that will really be in the relevant future (i.e. prior to a potential AI singularity that will boost machine translation to human levels and erase translation as a job).

Not generally. I have a ESL friend who is perfect at Japanese that keeps getting rejected for his bad English. The best you can hope for is to wriggle your way into a translation agency or some other place that barely cares about quality.

Of course this depends on how much you're exaggerating your own lack of skill. Mediocre writing is fine. It needs to be actually trash ESL tier to lock you out of most jobs.

>most translators probably wouldn't be good enough to work on popular games anyway hopefully.
Oh how naive. The suits that assign translators generally aren't too familiar with the skills of their translators, nor do they even appreciate the popularity of works beyond what some people advise them. I'll avoid saying names but suffice to say I've seen newbies be put on very prestigious, difficult works as their first job just because the newbie was available at a convenient time.

You might think, because it makes sense for the world to be this way, that upon acquiring a popular franchise with a high potential for profit that a company will proceed cautiously, hire the best translator they can for it, and schedule things so as to maximum quality for customer satisfaction. In reality the conversation often goes like "Okay, this series is fucking long, let's assign three different translators to speed shit up. Who's available? Put them on it." and that's that.

Shitty/mediocre translators only get pushed out if there's an internal coup or public outcry. Internal coups occur when someone working with the bad translator gets upset and starts stirring those around them to get the person off the job. If this doesn't happen, it is very rare for the bad translation to be caught before it comes out. (I expected heavy supervision on my first job, but literally nobody outside of the core TL team saw my work before it was released.) This can repeat infinitely with the bad translator facing no consequences, unless there's public outcry. Enough people complaining about a translation that someone in a position of power notices and deems it unacceptable. But even then, nothing significant may happen. Maybe some other company hires the translator. Maybe they're in an agency and they just get shuffled around.

Pay's really good with successful companies. Manga is the dream job since you get paid by page, and some pages have little to no text. One volume was text sparse enough that I made something like $100 an hour doing it. The two concerns are thus: One, most positions nowadays are for freelancers, so no health care or benefits (yes I'm American), two, if you shack up with a struggling or even failing company the pay will be a lot lower.

Manuals and boring shit manage to pay the best but I find that this is offset by how much extra effort you have to put into properly translating the jargon. My friend got stuck translating an article on touch screen solar panels or something in Japanese and it was the funniest fucking thing watching him take forever to finish a relatively short length of text.

Sufficiently large companies like VIZ tend to have only intermittent openings, so keep your options open. I really recommend doing some fan translation to build up experience. The majority of people suck real bad at translating until they spend enough time to get a feel for it. You don't want your first time translating to be on a company test.

What level do you have to be at to read vns? How long will it take to get there if I study 4 hours a day? I'm at a level where I can watch raw anime and more or less get the gist, and I can read all the hiragana, some katakana, but not a whole lot of kanji. I have a 4 hour commute in total going to and from my classes 4 days a week, so I figured I could study while on the bus instead of just listening to music and watching anime, and study the same amount on the weekends instead of playing translated vns like normal.

>would mean at least some people would learn three times as much vocabular in a given number of hours if the study included writing practice
No. What I mean is that by learning how to write characters, you build a second set of pathways for which characters are remembered: the visual shape, and the muscle memory of the strokes. Kind of like how you can type on a keyboard without knowing where the individual keys are or thinking about "now I need to strike the letter 'f', now 'a', now 'g', ..." You just move your fingers. The same is true of kanji, and moreover, this system works both ways: You can trigger your memory of the character and its meaning by recalling the movement associated with the character.

You literally will be able to learn new characters three times faster. It's the equivalent of making your cards red.

I recently took a look at N3 example questions for the first time, after doing the Tae Kim / Anki / Reading routine for 6 months now. They were all very doable and I have done zero textbook study so far.

You don't really need that to pass an N3 probably. The questions is however, why bother with N3? Personally my goal is to do the N1 in 2020 straight up, not sure if I'll manage but that remains to be seen.

koreans have more sounds which are similar to english so they have an easier time hearing and thus pronouncing those sounds. but i never consider pronunciation as a factor in the difficulty of learning a language. maybe i'm just underestimating production but what matters is how hard a language is to comprehend. then again i do plan on studying pitch accent for a few months so maybe that's why production in other languages seems like a joke in comparison.

How long does it take to drive from Paris to Berlin? It depends what route you take, how fast you drive, and a whole host of other factors.

If you're willing to be confused a bit for the first week or so, there's no reason you can't start reading VNs today (school-setting slice of life comedy ones, at least). If you're reading 4 hours a day, things will quickly start to click into place, especially if you prioritize volume instead of trying to perfectly comprehend every single sentence. The best thing to do as a beginner is just get as much input into your brain as possible because your Japanese is going to be so shit that even if you try to break down every sentence into pieces and dissect them, you're not going to be able to make sense of the vast majority of them (this is regardless of how much "grammar study" or any other kind of "studying" you've done prior to reading).

The most important thing you can do to improve your kanji learning is to learn to hand-write kanji. Learning kanji without writing is like learning how to dance by looking at a dance chart. If you learn the dance moves figuring out what different dance charts signify becomes much, much easier. The same with kanji.

Seriously, knowing how to write makes differentiating between 已、己、巴、巳 trivial. As well as any number of far more complex characters. Makes remembering far easier as well because you can do 空書 when trying to memorize and recall characters. It becomes less a visual memory task and more a muscle memory task; it becomes like riding a bike.

Knowing the kangxi radicals and other common character bases is really helpful as well. Especially if you know the basic names. Being able to break down a character like 遊 into 辵、方、乞、子 makes things trivial. “Oh there’s a chuo, fang, partial qi, and zi. Easy.” In fact, you can use this to remember compounds since they often share components. 足跡 is an easy example: the second character has the entire first character, virtually unmodified, as its radical.

Eh it depends. I only got really really good during my classroom days because I did loads of independent practice outside of class. I was really bad at writing 個, for example. So I sat there for an evening and literally filled sheets of graph paper with it until I was satisfied. All my writing got better after that. >where did it all go wrong
the first time i tried reading leyline was in late august and i didn't know jack shit and hadn't read any of tae kim. i quit and then i read the first couple sections of tae kim and tried reading leyline a second time knowing barely any words in september and kept reading until october (the date of the save in the first slot of this screenshot: >>21136586). it was really hard to understand so i got frustrated, and coupled with extenuating circumstances i took a break from dedicated reading for several months starting sometime in october. in the mean time i read and reread all of tae kim's articles instead of just the first few sections, read a bunch of DoJG, watched dolly videos, and when i came back to leyline in january it way easier to understand stuff. i still don't know jack shit, and there are many times where i can tell that i'm confusing who is doing what, etc. but it's still way better than it was when i posted that pastebin. i tried rereading the first few lines of leyline and it's WAY more comprehensible. but that's all down the toilet. without compelling content it's not sustainable.

I wouldn't do that many new words a day, but ultimately it's whatever your comfortable with. Besides that, I would recommend turning off the "suspended" card feature. It's true there will be some words that you struggle with, but eventually you'll see them so much that they'll stick. Here are my other favorite troubling radicals:

日 vs 曰. The former, of course, means "sun", while the latter means "speech". Thus, the radical of 書 actually refers to speech (and the other component is a hand gripping a brush)... suddenly the character makes sense as an ideograph. Yet 早 uses the former radical, which probably makes sense as an ideograph, though I wouldn't venture to guess why.

Virtually every character that deals with bodily organs and functions that appears to have 月 as the radical actually has a modified 肉 as the radical (more classically drawn as ⺼). 腹 and 肛, for example, are not canonically considered to use the 月 radical, but the 肉 radical.

This one is fairly easy to miss if you don't do writing: 礻 vs 衤 (the latter has a tiny additional stroke). 礻 derives from 示, while 衤 comes from 衣.

Those are the ones that I can remember off the top of my head.

It's basically impossible to read without subvocalizing to some extent. Research suggests it's incredibly important for comprehension. Reading literally activates the speech production and listening centers in your brain, so mentally the process of reading is essentially listening to yourself talk. There are different levels of it (I subvocalize more deliberately when reading Japanese than English for example) but you can't really eliminate it entirely.

This isn't strictly a question about Japanese, but rather humanity in general.
In Japanese "Jouzo" (上手) literally upper hand means skillful, to obtain mastery over something.
And in English "the upper hand" also means to become the best at something.

But what does this even mean, "the upper hand", it doesn't make any sense, so I'm curious as to how it became a phrase in two completely seperate languages. We wouldn't say "the lower hand" for example, as it makes no sense, so how did "the upper hand" come to mean good at something in two different languages?

Or am I just being retarded, and they got this from Portuguese trader niggers a few hundred years ago?

>added 300 words memorized far less the time period for good measurements in anki is way longer than a month
well your english here is a bit confusing but in response to what i can grasp, the idea is that by the end of that month i would be able to recall the reading and general meaning of those 300 words regardless of what might happen to them in the future
>ur exposure from reading is spread across way more words so you make progress at more words more slowly
perhaps but if just reading really was comparable to anki then at least some of that progress would be apparent after a month, it’s not like i’d go from 5 words retained after a month to suddenly 900 words after three months

これ語源は芝居からきてまして、

客席から舞台を見て右側が上手(かみて)

左側を下手(しもて)と言います。

格の高いうまい役者は大体舞台右側で芝居をし、

格の低いへたな役者は、

舞台左手で演技をすることが多かったので、

上手を「じょうず」

下手を「へた」と言うようになったんだそうです。
