That's interesting. Meaning's 統計学のマージャン戦術 actually says that furiten sanmenchan > non-furiten kanchan (or penchan or shanpon) > furiten ryanmen. I don't remember the specific explanation given but I suppose there could be differences in how the data is calculated. For example, here JangoroK says that the furiten wait will always include tsumo so are the graphs for a 2600 or 5200 hand including tsumo or not including tsumo?

Not him, but I remember in Fukuchi's 教えて!科学する麻雀 book, non-furiten bad wait and furiten good wait has roughly same win percentage, so with 1 han extra value from tsumo, it's logical that furiten good wait is better.

that's something I'd like to know too. 4500 in round one with furiten makes the probability 0.86 if you divide it by 5200, if you divide it by 8000 then you get 0.5625. Maybe the latter is more realistic, and that would mean that it's 5200 w i t h o u t the tsumo

but I am watching these tenhou streams and people don't open hands all that often and go for super big scoring hands, that makes me question that, not having even one han, how people risk going for hard to obtain hands and not go for easy to obtain hands but low scoring.

They're playing with Zung Jung rules. It's a hybrid between Chinese Official (MCR) and Hong Kong old style. The World Series of Mahjong was created to try and counteract the lack of inclusivity that the World Mahjong Organization has towards westerners. They put a bit of money in it to try and win over people towards their rule set, but no one bothered to learn it. As a result, Americans only play NMJL, Japanese only play Riichi, and Euros/Chinese play a mix of Riichi and MCR.

Yes, it is still the most popular form of mahjong in America and will most likely stay that way until the inevitable collapse of old Jewish women in their 80s whose sons must succumb to the other forms of mahjong, like Riichi (unless the weebs die out and no one even knows what a “mahjong” is anymore). Regardless, in terms of NMJL groups and tournaments, they’re still second to none. The only exception to this is if you live in a heavy Chinese area, but those are few and far between.

also how does folding work in riichi? even when a lot of times your discard is not responsible for someone else's ron you still lose points and even when one player self draw not all lose score. in what situations one loses score if someone else wins? I only know about if your discarded tile is the tile other player was waiting for, also sometime all lose score.

>> No.21117082

>>21116712
>even when a lot of times your discard is not responsible for someone else's ron you still lose points
What client are you playing on? Some games show your -1000 riichi bet at the end of the round if you called riichi but then someone else won, that might be what you're seeing.

Anyways folding isn't a formal game mechanic or anything, it's just the term for when you give up on winning the hand and just start discarding safe tiles hoping someone else deals into a ron or at worst you just have to eat someone's tsumo.

>> No.21117121

>>21116712
You get ronned? You pay all.
Someone self draws (aka tsumo)? Everyone pays up, but not equally: Dealer pays double. e.g. a 8000 self draw will be 2000/2000/4000.

The only exceptions are when someone scores some very specific yakuman in very specific conditions, so you might as well ignore those altogether since you'll probably never see it with your own eyes

Did the commonly accepted way of sorting your discards change at some point?
In manga set in the 60s or earlier, you often see people sorting their discards in one long line, broken up at 12 instead of 6.
There's exceptions of course (In Akagi they discard stuff the usual 6-6-7 way, for example), but I'm wondering if this is an actual thing or if it's just coincidence.

Have you ever taught anyone Mahjong irl, /jp/? How did it go?

I regularly teach people how to play Mahjong at one of the societies I run at uni, it started as more of a "hey guys look what I brought, wanna learn?" and then it turned into something people ask me regularly if there's space on the table, how to get better, how to play in their own time etc.

It's quite nice, I've probably taught around 20 people at this rate and people seem to retain what I teach them. We usually play without points since I just want people to understand the game, then the Yaku and THEN we play with points, but once we have enough people who understand, we use points again.

I've sort of perfected how to teach people now, since the game is quite complicated I find the biggest hurdle is honestly just the learning of how the game works. Some people pick it up faster than others which is both nice and annoying.

Another question I couldn't find an answer for on the wiki.

Can you sit on 4 of the same tile in your hand and then choose to call an ankan on a future turn, or can you only do it upon drawing the fourth?
I ask because if you can, how does keeping track of your drawn tile work? I know the game is big on making it clear if you kept or discarded your drawn tile, but if you take an ankan with tiles that were already in your hand then you'll have two new drawn tiles that turn, one from the live wall and one from the dead. Do you just show you're keeping your first drawn tile as you reveal the kan and then the dead wall draw becomes your new drawn tile?

Do you need to make it clear which two are your drawn ones? Or just the second one from the dead wall since people saw you reveal four tiles that aren't your draw which means you're keeping the first draw?

Draw tile from wall normally in your turn, then if you declare ankan, open your ankan tiles, move to side and indicate them that it's ankan call (usually by flipping one or two tiles upside down), then draw additional tile from dead wall. The sequence is from the top end of dead wall, then tile below it if it's second kan call, and then the last two. So yes, normal draw, call ankan, then dead wall draw.
It's also often customary to move that top end of dead wall aside from the start of the round. You can see this a lot in JP mahjong tournaments.

Firstly, try and get them interested. People will only really want to learn if they think it'll be fun. I showed them Koizumi and they loved it and it was a good intro point to get them interested.

The way I usually do it, is to put all the tiles in a row each in their suits (1-9, RWG, NESW) and then tell them what they are. Then I make an example hand and tell them that this is what they should be aiming for, a hand comprises of 4 sequences and a pair I also casually explain it can be 7 pairs as well, but I'd rather they get down the actual hand structure down. I then explain how the game works, you draw tiles, you think about what brings you hand closer to being completed and what doesn't, then you discard.

After that I explain the 6 calls of the game. Ron, Tsumo, Chi, Pon, Kan and Riichi. (I also give everyone a 1000 point stick, since we don't learn points and Yaku until later). I usually make a small phrase to go with each call ("You Chi for 1, 2, 3", "You PON when you have a PAIR") I then explain the Dora and then go on to starting the game. Show them how to construct the wall, dice rolls (I'm the dealer), how to draw tiles. Try your best to not confuse them by going to fast, and make sure you ask questions. "How many tiles should you have?", "What's this tile called? (pointing to the dora)"

I have two pieces of paper that I made to show Yaku (for experienced players) and the other to show the rules of the game simplified into a double sided sheet, it has all the tiles on it as well since learning the man tiles is hard, I usually give them the latter.

Usually a person stands behind them to get them to understand how to think and what to do and stuff. It usually takes a game or two for them to understand, then you introduce Yaku/Points and stuff.

you might want to distinguish Han and yaku here.

yaku is a winning condition, while han is the value. each yaku has a set Han value that may or may not change based on wether or not your hand is open. a Dora is just an additional value point tossed on top of any existing yaku's total value. A Dora tile is not a yaku.

so if you have a tanyao (all simple) hand you have 1yaku worth 1 han but a red tile or Dora will increase that value to two.

a chinitsu (full flush) is worth five han if open, six if closed. while only one yaku, it carries a high value.

piling several different yaku into your hand with Dora on top will inflate your value and give you a step up in a game

I don't think he understands what you're asking.

There's no actual rule to mark or declare which tile you've drawn that turn except when you're in Riichi, and in this case, you can only call ankan if the drawn tile is the 4th and won't change your wait. Otherwise, there is no need for you to painstakingly make obvious which tile you've drawn that turn. You can even put the tile into your hand, move it around, then discard it.

>> No.21168504

>>21168427
I've always been told you shouldn't put your tile in your hand until you discard, it's a big part of the strategy and all the games clearly mark if you kept your drawn tile or not.

>> No.21168719

>>21168504
That's just politeness. Or, that could even be an official league's rule to keep politeness in check. But there's no actual rule for that in just the plain rules of Mahjong. You just follow the tiles with your eyes. Video games mark the tiles for you because it's harder to track where a tile goes when a computer is zipping it across the screen lightning fast.

>> No.21168754

>>21168719

>>21168719 again, just to also add onto this, one example I thought of just now is that in the base rules of Mahjong, there aren't any actual rules on when you can/can't call a tile other than you have to be able to complete it, and you can't call on it once the next person has "drawn". But I believe some official leagues clarify this much more deeper, stating that each person should pause for a specific amount of time, then once the next tile reaches their hand, the window closes, etc. All rules for politeness and to keep a game civil, but all of this is added in after the fact.

>> No.21168839

>>21167276
That depends on a lot of things. What's the risk of dropping to third or last? If you're playing on Tenhou, which lobby are you in? If you're playing in a tournament, what's the uma and what are the current standings? Rather than setting a rule in a vacuum saying that you should or shouldn't, you need to consider what would constitute a successful game for you.

>>21168427
If you've got a winning hand, you definitely should not mix your winning tile into your hand because the shape of your wait determines how much fu your hand is worth and whether or not you qualify for pinfu. Under normal circumstances, if you haven't won yet, then the main reason to not insert your draw into your hand is because of speed. It slows the game down if you draw -> insert -> discard rather than draw -> discard -> insert.

This I somewhat agree with, but if you're at a table playing with skilled players, having this as an option should be considered, though not to the point where it slows down gameplay like you said.
