theres no such thing as incorrect pitch because there are 20 different variations of pitch style across japan.

what you're saying is like telling someone from fukushima they should brush up on their pitch accent if they dont want to get made fun of.

its their fuckin accent, it's how life is. just fucking accept people will think you say some words differently. noones fucking cringing about it when a gaijin says pitch accent wrong. they'll literally get on your knees and suck your dick if you can even say arigatou gozaimasu.

as far as 標準語, yes there is. Natives that don't use 標準語's pitch accent aren't wrong by their own regions standards, but as has already been said, and can demonstrably be shown, other Japanese people still give them shit about it.
>noones fucking cringing about it when a gaijin says pitch accent wrong
甘いっすね. If you don't care about pitch accent that's fine, but acting like most of them don't care and would much more prefer if you spoke with correct pitch accent is naive

I'm also assuming, though I'm not sure I've seen it used in this exact instance, that it can be used similarly to そういうこと which more loosely but naturally into English translates as "exactly" (literally "it's that kind of thing") when affirming what the other speaker(s) have said

Im reading a manga for the first time in jp and I really only understand like maybe 20% of what is being said with checking the grammar guide a bunch and trying to look up words only when I just dont understand anything in a sentence. Then when I read a page I read it in English to see how well I really got the meaning. Is this a good way of doing it or should I be looking up more words? Or should I just keep doing anki some more and wait until I can understand more words.

Can anyone help me get ITHVNR working on wine?

The program itself will run, and I can hook VNs with it. The problem is that ITH won't detect new lines properly so they never get copied to the clipboard... at least I think that's what's wrong since each new line of text appears on the exact same line as the last one.

I'm pretty sure the problem has nothing to do with ITH being unable to copy text to the clipboard or anything like that since highlighting text with my mouse causes it to be automatically copied without issue.

My problem is being around English speaking friends all the time since I got here two months ago. My friends wife basically refuses to speak Japanese with us since she hates teaching. Today I finally moved into my own apartment and the landlady is super nice, so she likes to chat. I already feel a little bit more confident just from one day of being forced to use Japanese.

My biggest issue is I have a very low vocabulary, maybe 400 fluent words and 2-300 non fluent words. I want to learn more but am so lazy!

So I'm already in Japan for about 11 days and still have more than a week before me. I just wanted to say it's just so satisfying to communicate with locals all around Japan. Through my Japanese we got to speak with a couple of Japanese people (which were good in English and others not so) and getting told I'm very good in Japanese just felt/feels so good. I'm a looong way from being fluent (and I suck at Kanji learning) but this opportunity gave me a lot of confidence and I'm definitely going to pursue Japanese fluency. I hope I will stick to my decision till the end.

So whenever you get the chance to also visit Japan, I wish you will feel the same <3

Evans syndrome (ES) is a rare severe autoimmune disorder characterized by the combination of autoimmune hemolytic anemia and immune thrombocytopenia. In most cases, the underlying cause is unknown. We sought to identify genetic defects in pediatric ES (pES), based on a hypothesis of strong genetic determinism. In a national, prospective cohort of 203 patients with early-onset ES (median (range) age at last follow-up: 16.3 years (1.2-41.0)) initiated in 2004, 80 non-selected consecutive individuals underwent genetic testing. The clinical data were analyzed as a function of the genetic findings. Fifty-two patients (65%) received a genetic diagnosis (the M+ group): 49 carried germline mutations, and 3 carried somatic variants. Thirty-two (40%) had pathogenic mutations in one of 9 genes known to be involved in primary immunodeficiencies (TNFRSF6, CTLA4, STAT3, PIK3CD, CBL, ADAR1, LRBA, RAG1, and KRAS), whereas 20 patients (25%) carried probable pathogenic variants in 16 genes that had not previously been reported in the context of autoimmune disease. Lastly, no genetic abnormalities were found in the remaining 28 patients (35%, the M- group). The M+ group displayed more severe disease than the M- group, with a greater frequency of additional immunopathologic manifestations and a greater median number of lines of treatment. Six patients (all from the M+ group) died during the study. In conclusion, pES was potentially genetically determined in at least 65% of cases. Systematic, wide-ranging genetic screening should be offered in pES; the genetic findings have prognostic significance and may guide the choice of a targeted treatment.

Now you know that it's OK to run into things you can't fucking read.

There's a shitton of words you don't know and also you have no idea what it's actually saying. Sure you can tell how it's structured and you can probably pronounce most of it, but it's not like you can actually read it if you're into into the relevant domain of study.

The question is not "never seen", it's whether you actually know what the word means.

By the way these are the only ordinary words I didn't know (i.e. I had to look them up and the meaning was not what I expected):

>thrombocytopenia
>germline
>somatic

And I'd say there's something like a 50/50 chance of a random academic native speaker of English correctly understanding what "pathogenic" means without consulting a dictionary at some point.

As an ESL there's some types of vocab where I will get stumped because I never had to talk about it in English or heard anyone else talk about it much. Bones in your body is a good example. But ultimately it hardly matters and it's that retarded ideal of native like fluency once more. Not sure what this has to do with "giving up" because I'm able to enjoy English content just fine without having this type of knowledge actively in my brain. If such a word ever comes up I can roughly place it and that's completely sufficient or alternatively it takes half a second to get the word that I'm missing with no need to pre-study it actively.

For some parts of the language my vocabulary is quite deep, for others it's not but that's the same for every speaker of a language, foreign or native. It's just that a native speakers vocabulary is more well developed in a lot of aspects of daily life usually, while for ESL not living in the country this tends to coincide much more with their personal interess or professional field.

I know the word "femur" but I'd have to look up where it actually is. I know "tailbone" but only because it has "tail" in it. I know "sternum" but only because I have sternum problems. I know "collarbone" but only because someone in middleschool broke one of his playing hockey. I know "rib" because it's relatively common and even used as a name for food. I can't easily remember any other names of bones that don't just have the name of the body part in them like hip bone. Native English speaker btw.

Oh yeah I know what carpals are since nobody in typing class would ever shut up about carpal tunnel and people online were paranoid about developing it for a while. In the future less people will know the word "carpal" since the carpal tunnel paranoia craze is over (and has been replaced by the RSI craze, which is closer to the truth).

The idea is to read stuff you can actually make sense of. You won't get to 100 from zero, so it makes sense to not pick the hardest shit you can find from the get go. You need to ease yourself into the language a little, however it's also important to not stay complacent with the level you're at for too long. But if you're just starting out the chances this is true is very minute.

Just don't stay reading slice of life cute girl manga for years with nothing else.
