A decent airbrush is going to cost you $100 minimum. You'll also want at least three small regular brushes which is $20 minimum if you want them to be anything but shit quality. +stuffu+paints. Sculpting tools you can just scourge around.

I've accumulated a (tiny) bit of experience sculpting 28mm scale figs, though they were all monsters and stuff so obviously ended up larger than a human. Been thinking about trying animufigs, at least they're hell of a lot of larger which makes things easier.
Can anyone here name any good putty/mass/whatever to use for larger figs like this? I've used green stuff and milliput but those are so expensive that the material costs for a 1/7 scale figure would be around 50-100$. Anything cheaper that's still sculptable?

Protip: use something that's not clay
As for smootheness, water is always the first answer, with miniature putties just finger+water makes for a very good smoothing tool. Not sure if that'll work with sand, you might need to use a very fine sandpaper after it's hardened.
