>just 30 minutes of anki a day!
ok i've been doing about 30 minutes a day for several months now and i have to admit this is getting really, really old. if you can tolerate 30 minutes, kudos to you. but i think it's fair if most people cannot stand having to spend 30 minutes EVERY DAY doing something so unenjoyable. just replace anki with something else incredibly boring like watching paint dry. now do that every day. for 30 minutes. that's 182 hours of paint watching a year. that's 7 and a half days of continuously watching paint dry. fudge that.

Think of learning to read Japanese like learning to read from zero again.
You probably started learning to read in your native language when you were 5 years old, and it probably took you several years to recognize enough words to be able to speedread.
I remember I couldn't try speedreading till I was about 12 years old or so. That took about 7 years. It'll probably take just as long to learn to speedread in Japanese.
So, the more words you learn, the better you'll become at identifying them. Since a great number of Japanese words are written in kanji, you'll eventually have to learn those kanji to tell those words apart.

no, you mine the stuff you're gonna see often (not extremely often like 私 and shit but things like 現金 眼鏡 野良猫 居候)so you dont waste extra time looking it up, second guessing or mixing up meanings or readings. you want the basics down solid. immersion will further solidify them (but not at the rate of 100 times a day for a beginner who can barely read 200 words a day).
and anking words you only see twice a year is a fools errand no matter what

You want a fucking timeline? I'll give you a fucking timeline. You should really just adopt the "use a little anki and read/listen more" approach, but if you think it's too simple, well, you're an idiot, but I'll still try to help you. Again, you should REALLY use the simple approach, but if you INSIST on not using anything if it's not split up into stages and substages, well, here you go. Don't say I never warned you.

stage 1 - foundations (1 to 2 weeks)

read https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/learn/anon/alternativeguide.html

install a mouseover dictionary in your web browser https://sorashi.github.io/comprehensive-list-of-rikai-extensions/

learn the kana https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/learn/kana.html
(you want to use these fonts: https://i.imgur.com/r6YDZsf.png))

start actively watching untranslated japanese anime or other audio-visual media (e.g. youtube, 実況s, etc) (you don't have to understand it) so that you don't misunderstand how the kana are supposed to sound
(the above step will not cause you to learn any significant amount of real japanese, it's just for phonetic/phonemic awareness)

stage 2 - more foundations (1 to 2 months)

Start this stage after you know the kana, or if you've spent two weeks procrastinating learning the kana with nothing to show for it.

start reading boirodaisuki or tae kim, depending on what you need:
https://boirodaisuki.neocities.org/dark.html
https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/grammar/taekim.html

at the same time as your grammar guide, start vn core: https://mega.nz/#!G24Flahb!MnZnPq-fUYItNVT-WDBxvKfcYJuOPqmqeZnKDzcB2Fk

start actively searching for sources of japanese text and attempting to "read" it (you don't have to understand it) so that your brain starts learning how japanese text looks and feels
(the above step will not cause you to learn any significant amount of real japanese, it's just for making it easier to start reading later)

stage 3 - actually learning japanese (the rest of your life, or 2 to 8 years)

At some point you will naturally start to understand the things you hear and read in Japanese, once you know enough words and grammar and also once you've been exposed to it for long enough.

Just keep consuming Japanese in as many forms and contexts as possible and everything will slowly fall into place.

You will not need any further guidance. Yeah, really. You're free! Just keep searching out and consuming more and more Japanese. Good luck.

You can "mine" cards into a custom Anki deck if you want. That's about it.

If you're REALLY scared about developing a bad accent, just keep your listening practice up and don't engage in long conversations with non-native speakers of Japanese. It's that simple. Keep the authentically accented Japanese bouncing around your head and don't clean it out and you'll be fine.

Yuri is good btw.

On the aspect of the frequency of unknown words in reading, several researchers have conducted relevant studies to explore how many times we need to learn them. According to studies of Saragi, Nation & Meister (1978), subjects can learn 93% of words that had been presented to them six times or more but words represented to learner fewer than six times were learned only by half. Jenkins, Stein & Wysocki (1984) discovered that only 25% of their learners had learned words after 10 meetings. Nagy, Herman & Anderson (1985) showed that the likelihood that a word would be learned after one meeting was 0.15. Rott (1999) concluded that six encounters was an adequate number. And according to Zahar, Cobb & Spada (2001) found that low-level learners needed more encounters to learn a word than more proficient learners, which may be in line with the discovery mentioned when discussing the influence of language
proficiency

tl;dr:

6 is a good general ballpark for when you go from "I'm not going to remember this" (ignorance) to "I have a good chance of remembering this" (recognition).

But the number changes dramatically depending on the person, word, and their experience.

Experienced learners need fewer encounters to go from ignorance to recognition.

Unironically replace Tae Kim with Sakubi.

>at the same time as your grammar guide, start vn core
I think a deck with audio would be a better idea so the prospective learner has an example of native pronunciation to emulate when saying the word either aloud or just in their head. Core isn't great but if you're only using it with the intention of dropping it after the first 1k words then it doesn't really matter.

>start actively searching for sources of japanese text and attempting to "read" it (you don't have to understand it) so that your brain starts learning how japanese text looks and feels
I think this is pretty pointless. You will get practice reading and see what Japanese looks like when you read whatever grammar guide it is you decide to go with.

>once you know enough words and grammar and also once you've been exposed to it for long enough.
Don't like this statement. It makes it sound like if you're struggling to read then you need to go and read more grammar explanations and grind more words in Anki which is harmful. I'd cut out the "once you know enough words and grammar and also" bit.

noticing isnt the same as remembering the reading and meaning perfectly. as a beginner if you want to remember the reading and meaning perfectly without studying them, you'd forget frequently and have to look up each of those words repeatedly. that takes time.
if it's a top ~5,000 common word, it's more time-efficient to look it up once, add it to anki to pin it to your brain, and never have to look it up again (deleting the word after context has reinforced that knowledge enough)
adding to anki and reviewing only becomes less efficient when you've already learned the most common words and have a strong enough basis to learn new words much more easily from just looking them up once or a few times in context

The grid add-on was basically created for RTK-style decks. It shows how many kanji you've memorized and can write/produce from memory, and does not imply that you can't read them (which is done with other decks). Using it on a vocab/sentence deck is a misusage, because vocab/sentence progress is better measured in units of words/sentences, sentence cards often test for a single word in a sentence full of stuff you don't actually know (which would throw the grid off), and just because you can read one compound with the character doesn't mean you can read them all. Close to 16k words/sentences is quite impressive though.

The issue is that knowing a single word isn't really a true-or-false thing, so you can't really count the exact number of words you know.

If you have 3k mature cards in Anki but you've been reading a lot you probably actually know something like 5k or so words.

If you know 正義 and 議論 then you automatically know 正論, does that mean that 正義 is worth 1 word, 議論 is worth 1 word, but together they're worth 3 words?

And what about words where there are several different stages of knowledge, like the ten trillion idiomatic uses of かける. Is each use its own word? Are collocations word now?

It's not something you can realistically count, nor even estimate.

This is incorrect. RTK teaches you to recall the kanji from memory given any prompt (if you cannot think of the characters for べんきょう down to the exact strokes in your head without looking, you are illiterate like worse than a child), and keyword to kanji is particularly useful because once the deck is mature you can essentially transition your RTK deck into a Japanese production deck for free with Japanese keywords, that of which gives you double mileage out of your RTK deck for almost no extra effort, and keeps your reviews relevant even when at a very advanced level of Japanese.

This is a very common presupposition to make, but it doesn't hold out in practice once people start mining. Someone who spends half an hour a day reading and listening is going to progress a lot slower than someone who reads and listens for five hours a day, even if they both mine about the same amount of words. I know that I'm a special case since I dropped Anki entirely, but it illustrates that a large gap does exist, and words known in Anki isn't very useful as an indicator of how much you'll have to look up when consuming Japanese.

If you want a serious answer, things get easier somewhere between 5k and 20k "known words". It depends on how much reading and listening you actually do. The more you do the less words you need to "officially" "know".

This is incorrect. RTK teaches you to recall the kanji from memory given any prompt. If you cannot think of the characters for べんきょう down to the exact strokes in your head without looking, you are illiterate. It is trivial for a RTK learner to do that, or quickly become able to do that if he can't, while someone who skipped RTK will never be able to output like that because he was a weaker foundation. One doesn't have to add Japanese keywords later, but you can easily do with a script and like I said it gives you double mileage out of your RTK deck for almost no extra effort, in that you get a free Japanese production deck out of it.
>Have you considered that there are other methods to learn to write Japanese? Far better ones than RTK.
Sure, if you want to take as long as Japanese school children do. With RTK you can knock it out in 3 months. It's devastatingly effective for what it's intended to do.

It will come to a RTK learner, but it will never come to someone who didn't do RTK because the ability just isn't there to produce characters from memory.

No, because anyone with a brain wouldn't get bored at doing something that requires you to actively think.

I have zero interest in farming, but I could spend a whole day watching videos about pruning methods, manure types and how to tie a horse.

The reason I don't do it is because my time is limited and learning that stuff won't help with my current goals, not because it's boring. Anything can be interesting, as long as it's stimulating your brain.

You're just braindead from all those Porygon flashing lights and now the only thing that will give you some dopamine is seeing bouncing tits during a flaming skeletons sword fight while some Japanese is thrown your way. that being said, even in short periods of time like 6 weeks, meditation has shown proven effects on mood and immune function. so yeah it clearly causes positive changes in the brain and you don't seem like you've done any research other than that one crappy graph that was circulating on twitter a while ago

more evidence that you have no idea what the graph you're posting is even measuring lol. sustained attention is shown to have positive effects in basically every cognitive task imaginable. it's literally what's behind flow state of pro athletes and chess players. what you're actually attempting to argue is that according to your graph, meditation does not cause those abilities, or any others.
but most of the people who were in those studies (the graph was made mostly from data from short-term meditation trials, if you actually explored the sources) are not people who could maintain effortless attention for 5+ minutes. they took courses like MBSR which are 6 to 8 weeks long. that will not give you the ability for sustained, completely undistracted attention for 5 straight minutes. if there are a few long-term meditators represented on that plot, they're the ones on the higher end.

>i'm not watching your video
of course you're not watching the video, because you don't actually care about learning whether meditation works or not. you just want to maintain the belief that you have nothing to gain from a practice you're just biased against, probably due to some weird stereotypes you bought into

of course everyone knows our minds wander naturally. but actually sitting down for 30 minutes at a time in silence attempting to get it to not do that, gives you a visceral experience of just how repetitive, subconscious and out of control that process typically is. it also reveals the kinds of wandering thoughts that are typically not noticed at all.

"My co-author of the book Altered Traits is a neuroscientist, Richard Davidson. He has a lab at the University of Wisconsin. It’s a very large lab, he has dedicated scanners, he has about 100 people working there, and he was able to do some remarkable research where he flew Olympic level meditators—who live in Nepal or India typically, some in France—he flew them over to the lab and put them through a protocol in his brain scanners and did state-of-the-art tests and the results were just astounding. We found, for example, or he found that their brain waves are really different."

also, i found the research paper that the graph you posted was clipped from:
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/264393931_Mindfulness-based_interventions_in_schools-A_systematic_review_and_meta-analysis

not only does it not come to the conclusions you're coming to, but the abstract actually says "All in all, mindfulness-based interventions in children and youths hold promise, particularly in relation to improving cognitive performance and resilience to stress."

so now i definitely know you've been BSing this whole time lol you never read the original paper and you're just biased against meditation because you think it means floating on magic carpets or someshit... the cure for ignorance is education not pretenducation.

>this has been my entire point!
literally none of that means "meditation doesn't work"... reading comprehension is vital. it simply means the methods being used for mindfulness are more varied than preferable and make it difficult to pinpoint which aspects are doing what. and despite that, it straight up says there's a promising outlook for future research.
like i've said already, these studies were using short term courses for beginners and literal schoolchildren, often involving things like "mindful movement".

something like the mind illuminated on the other hand, is set up for intense practice, solely based on training the mind directly, and over the course of months and years, akin to what monks do. the closest studies done on people who do serious long-term practice like that, are on the monks who's brain waves were measured, in the video you don't want to click because you're afraid of your biases being threatened.

imagine boldly claiming something you've never done and know practically nothing about, "doesn't work" based on a single metastudy that you didn't even interpret correctly. lol get a load of this guy.

It doesn't support them. It's just not a self-aware turing machine that can distinguish between kanji decks and vocab decks, and simply analyzes the field you give it. Using it on a vocab deck will give incorrect/misleading results.

My listening has lagged behind my reading. I've almost done every NHK Easy article from 2017 up until now, what's a good thing to start binge reading now? Wikipedia? Normal NHK?

The reason I bring up my lagged listening is because I'm still going to be listening to NHK Easy (and some other stuff) but I think it'd be a waste to stop progressing my reading until my listening catches up.

About your listening dilemma you should try listening to audio books. I listen to them over and over. Over 20+ times and look up parts sometimes and sometimes not. But the mass of listening I think is super beneficial. Like a parent reading you bed time stories.
