I'm still not entirely sure what HA is, can someone explain it to me? Different things happen in different routes of the original game so if it's a sequel does it take after just one route?

Mind of Steel is the canon route.

There is no canon route, not ALL routes mixed in one.
The main events that happen work for ANY route and the bonus scenes pinpoint to specific routes(like certain sidestories did in Kagetsu).

The rest is just IMAGINARY.

As far as I could decipher with Atlas, the "canon" path of F/SN changes to a certain extent depending on what scene of F/HA you're at. A few scenes with Rin mention that Shirou became her apprentice and that they went on a date in a hotel, so those scenes would follow UBW. I assume it's the same for some of the other characters, but I didn't care enough to figure out the details.

The ending's fucking awesome even if you don't understand what any of the text means though.
