Myself and some friends are trying to learn Japanese, and we were thinking of getting some alphabet fridge magnets, but I can't seem to find any.

After finishing my first VN in Japanese (which was also the first native material I'd ever read in Japanese), Flyable Heart, I went on to try reading Kira Kira and was extremely disheartened to find how much of a struggle it was for me and how little of it I was able to understand. By the end of Flyable Heart, I was understanding quite a lot and not having much trouble at all with most lines, but when I tried reading Kira Kira it felt like I was all the way back at square one having made no progress at all. I ended up giving up on it after a few days because it was just too difficult for me.

A year has passed since then and I've decided to give Kira Kira another go as a means of testing my progress, and I can confidently say that all the reading I've done in the last year has definitely paid off. I remember when I tried reading the introduction to Kira Kira on my first attempt I could barely understand anything and was sat there reading lines over and over again trying to make sense of them (mostly in vain), whereas this time I was able to read straight through all the lines (with the help of ITHVNR + Nazeka and its built-in reader, of course) and understand them all no problem on the first pass.

Feels good, man. For anyone else who feels like things are going slow and they're not progressing much, go back and try reading something that you read a long time ago and struggled with and you'll see the fruits of your labor.

Anyway, my biggest weakness now definitely seems to be my vocabulary. It's really bottlenecking my reading speed and comprehension, but every time I try starting an Anki deck in hopes of improving the situation, it just ends up having a negative impact on my learning (makes me procrastinate because it's boring) and I usually end up dropping it after a week or two. Any thoughts/advice on what I can do about this?

Start a mining deck if you haven't already and focus exclusively on using Anki for words that seem unreasonably simple and important for how poorly you understand them. If you only add like five or ten cards a day, it shouldn't cause you to procrastinate. At any rate, as long as you keep reading extensively, you'll continue to build a stronger vocabulary, so you don't have to worry about the long term.

I'm not sure that I'm the person you're thinking of, but I might be. I did post about Flyable Heart from time to time when I was reading it.

As for how much I've read since then, in terms of visual novels that I've read to 100% completion (i.e. where I've cleared all routes), I think that number comes to a measly 3 (Flyable Heart included), but there have been more VNs which I've read partially and never completely finished due to losing interest in them (or never really enjoying them much in the first place, where I just kept reading in hopes that they would get better). Counting those VNs which I've fully completed or at least read a substantial amount of, the number comes to 9 I think (again, inc. FH).

Not really a number I'm proud of. I know I could've read a lot more by now, but losing focus and interest at various points along the way and taking breaks away from Japanese as a result has cost me about 5 months of lost time where I could've been reading stuff but wasn't. There's also the problem that the amount of time I invest in Japanese is strongly tied to how much I'm enjoying what I'm reading, so say I'm at a particularly boring part of a particular VN and I'm not having fun reading it (or maybe the VN itself is just boring), there's a good chance I'm only spending maybe an hour or less on it a day, and I seem to have an extraordinary affinity for choosing boring VNs to read.

i started with 40 kanji a day, lifted it up to 50 for nice even numbers, fucked it up after 20 days because i got really drunk after doing my reviews but before learning new kanji and got nausea/short term memory loss which led me to only learning 13 that day

then i started doing 63 per day and if i keep this pace i'll finish rtk 3 in 20 days

That's the laughable part. Matt doesn't even teach Japanese. >You had to lie. That says it all. He started reading every day from the end of 2009 and took the JLPT in late 2010.
Wrong dumbass. I'm comparing the time they spent learning Japanese. You can't just discard the "inefficient" methods they used before moving to the better ones because you'd have to have an idea of the hours invested, the efficiency of the weaker method, their competency before using the better method, etc. Nice try though.

If you think that doing 6k or 10k on anki will not seem like a bad decision 6 months or 12 months from now, then do it. If you think that doing RTK will not seem like a bad option, then do that. If you think that watching hundreds of anime is what will not seem bad to you, then that you must do.

The only noticeable difference is that AJATT/MIA wrongly believes that input doesn't need to be comprehensible, which is fucking retarded. I think Matt also thinks that passive listening helps which is also moronic. Other than that though it's the same shit.

Those are smaller nuances rather than the actual method but maybe the issue here is that we have different ideas on what is and isn't a method. It would probably be better to say that they all use the input paradigm brought about by Krashen's research. Matt diverts from it a bit because he wants to sound smarter than he is, and he says that it doesn't have to be comprehensible (completely wrong) and you don't have to pay attention to it (also bullshit). In fact a lot of what Matt says is absolute retardation, but the basic paradigm is Krashen's (albeit a bastardized version).

Steve's method is basically Krashen's but with higher focus on reading it seems. Krashen actually uses LingQ, little fun fact for you.

No, that's not at all how evidence works, You can't just cherry-pick examples from populations with different sizes and compare them in any meaningful way. How many people did MIA and never reached N1-level? How many people tried Moogy's method and succeeded that you don't know about? Not to mention this ignores Krashen's case studies that support the input hypothesis in languages other than Japanese.

If you're going to compare methods learn some statistics first, and I don't mean "read a couple of wikipedia pages about math."

Pure Krashen: No flashcards or dictionaries, start with something like a TPRS class. Obviously needs modification for solo learners.

Kaufmann: bilingual dictionaries, limited flashcards, frequent repeats of comprehensible material.

AJATT: heavy emphasis on flashcards, monolingual dictionaries for no well-supported reason, constant exposure to incomprehensible material.

>Start off with a TPRS class
Simply incorrect, Krashen and the guy who invented TPRS both say that TPRS should be done after an initial TPR stage. TPRS requires not only a teacher but output and Krashen does not believe output should be forced to happen in early stages but should be allowed to appear naturally (i.e. when the learned feels comfortable enough to begin trying). TPRS should not be started until well after this happens because the nature of TPRS is that it require the person to answer A LOT of questions.

I respect that you know what TPRS is though, I'm glad there are people who actually research this stuff instead of just throwing big names around.

>Foster's pedagogy is entirely unorthodox. He eschews the memorization of paradigms—to the point of forbidding students from memorizing lists of grammatical forms and vocabulary. His method involves incrementally mastering the structure and vocabulary of the language by breaking down the grammar into tiny, discrete concepts that can be immediately grasped and recognized by most students with little additional explanation. For example, how to say "and" in Latin; or the 2nd person plural perfect form of a certain class of verbs and its meaning. Then, using chrestomathies of diverse Latin texts compiled by himself, Foster invites students to search for and identify the grammatical form under consideration. In this way, from day one students are exposed to genuine Latin literature rather than dry paradigms and tedious, rudimentary constructions. Finally, each lesson is reinforced through protracted homework assignments that often require many hours to complete.

>i see you disabled easy/hard and ease decrease on again too

I have it setup where I learn kanji in 1 10 30. So the first time I see a kanji I read the card learn the information and write it. So I hit good. When it comes up again in 10 minutes or so, if I remember it with the keyword and write it down I hit good again. Then it shows up 30 minutes later during my reviews. This way I've been learning the card completely and I've noticed that I don't get new cards wrong too often.
Easy and hard buttons as well as ease modifiers are not very good and I've found it's better this way.
Also, using 70% new interval for lapses as well as an extra 30 minute step really helps with being able to handle the review load and learning easier.

though with the extra steps I probably have more reviews on the same card than other people. But this way I really learn a card.

idk if i explained it properly but i'm saying for example i'd have 2 words in anki that are spelled exactly the same except one has ソ and one has ン. so i wouldn't be able to just know which word it is unless i can predict based on how recently i solved the other one but if there's enough katakana words it should be harder for me to do that.

the problem with grammar guides (besides the fact that they're extremely boring) is that the explanations usually suck, and even if they didn't many of them won't make any sense to you until you've already gotten a decent amount of exposure to the language anyway (at which point grammar guides become pointless). if some grammar point is confusing to you, just forget about it and move on. your brain will figure it out eventually through exposure.

it quite simply doesn't do anything. matt is deluded. seeing how hard he struggles to elucidate the benefits in that video he made about meditation says it all.

at one point he starts talking about how meditating makes it so you can find anything interesting, and he picks up his cup as an example, assuring you that you with meditation you could never become bored by it because "your mind will just be full of cup". he then tries to relay all the interesting things there are to think about when it comes to cups if you practice mindfulness™ and basically only manages to come up with "well, like, it has this pattern printed on it, and... err..." and then he has to give up because he can't think of anything else.

after rambling for a full half an hour, the only argument he was able to present was "i can't explain it but just trust me", which should set off the bullshit detectors of even the most stupid and gullible of people.

Be realistic. This isn't going to help anyone here but an absolute beginner. It contains nearly nothing.

It doesn't contain anything like まで or なら. It defines たら as just "if" (when it's usually "when" unless it's a complex future condition or a hypothetical), doesn't say anything about stuff like ている, ていく, etc. No mention of highly grammaticalized adverbs like もう, まだ, また etc, doesn't mention こと or もの. It doesn't even contain the word "topic" anywhere.

This is beyond "grammar is hard to learn as a beginner, don't sweat it! just learn the basics and learn the rest from experience! :)". This is showing someone where the pots and pans are and telling them to make dinner for you. Yes. Sure. That helps. But it's not going to make anything happen unless you're already talking to an expert.

The page also consists almost entirely of tables. You know what ACTUALLY fucks beginners over when they try learning grammar? TABLES. They try to memorize them because their brain can't process that much information at once. Textbooks and Tae Kim "drip-feed" things a few at a time with short explanations for a reason. It's not because they're trying to dumb things down, it's because otherwise people's brains are going to turn off.

The page itself is not actually bad on its own merits but please never post it in such a context again. It's not for what you think it's for. It's clearly a cheat sheet for people who are engaging with other forms of intentional study at a beginner level, like college classes.

If your actual problem with Tae Kim and textbooks is their verbosity and how they tend to take ten sentences to explain things that can be explained in one and a half, just send them https://boirodaisuki.neocities.org/dark.html or something.

Anyway, as >>21068176 said, I guess you must need a crack. It's annoying when a VN needs a crack and your torrent doesn't come with one. It's happened to me before as well. If you have an Animebytes account, there's an Axanael torrent there with a crack included. If not, guess you'll just have to search ザナエル + "crack", "NoDVD", "NoActi" or something in google and hope you can find it somewhere (your best bet is probably anime-sharing).

again, no study has been done with the mind illuminated as the meditation guide. there’s a reason it’s being tauted above the other hundreds of systems. it confronts the obstacles that most systems/tutorials don’t even touch, allowing people who have been meditating for 10+ years to get results they’d never dreamed of, in just 1 year or less of using the instructions in TMI.

if you say meditation is bullshit, what you’re essentially saying is that you have no idea what’s going on in your mind (regarding attention, thinking, and emotional reactivity), why it works the way it does, and how you can optimize it. and you have no interest in figuring it out. that’s unfortunate, but some people do care about those things and they deserve to hear about something that will help, without having people who have no experience whatsoever hijacking the conversation.

also i’m not that calvin guy you people are obsessed with so chinese has nothing to do with me.

did the study that plot derived from involve only people learning with TMI? if not then it’s completely irrelevant to my argument because TMI directly addresses pitfalls that are extremely common in other types of mindfulness programs (like mind-wandering, mental dullness, confusing awareness and attention and abandoning the latter for the former, getting stuck when difficult emotions are encountered). the very pitfalls which are likely responsible for the data in question.

the details of the practice matter.

what you guys are doing is like making a plot of people “learning japanese” and concluding learning japanese is pointless because most learners fail to pass beginner level. not realizing that the actual methods they’re using might just be crap, and that if you isolated learners doing things that really work and sticking to it, you’d see a very different looking plot.

that’s not “dodging”, that’s making sure you know what you’re asking about instead of just baiting.

enlightenment can never be fully defined in a few sentences. it’s something experienced and words can only ever be labels. but an attempt would look like this:

freedom from the single-minded identification with one’s conditioned thought patterns. the ability to objectively observe any thought or emotion rather than defaulting to conditioned patterns of reactivity that most people are limited to. an expansion of perspective that completely releases unskillful attachments like self-consciousness, anxiety, greed and hateful/violent thoughts towards the self or others. an abiding in a state of peace and joy that isn’t easily perturbed.

and a study would probably be able to show the requirements you described, but one does not yet exist. it likely will sometime in the future, but it would require participants that are committed for at least 8 months since it progresses in stages that take time to mature and unfold. existing meditation studies are mostly done on 6-8 week programs that barely scratch the surface.

The tonal and emphatic cues in natural spoken Japanese help a lot in determining what information is redundant, or being emphasized, or being introduced. Text doesn't have that. Just earlier today I was like "no, you Can't Do That" and someone corrected me, and then I corrected myself to "no, YOU can't do that". Japanese has the same kind of thing. If you're missing out on how something's intonation should work then you're only going to "know" it on a conscious level, not understand it intuitively.

Unless you're deaf and have a superpowered brain that can do literally anything because it doesn't have to process audio.

nah, at a certain point the clumsy attempts to convert japanese structures into english, literally or liberally, as in grammar guides, become a barrier to comprehension rather than an aid

if you keep using grammar guides as a crutch you will just remain forever confused. you shouldn't be touching tae kim, dojg or whatever after the first month or so.

There may be other examples, but I would actually argue that は and が are examples of that sort of emphatic aspect of Japanese if my understanding of them is correct. は, among other things, is used to to make a contrast between things. so like "THIS is X, but THIS is Y". And が can be used in situations like the "no, YOU can't do that.", I just can't really explain it well, but you understand what the sentence is doing in English, so just apply that to Japanese.

話は変わるけど…why do word pairs like these exist

Even within が and within は, emphasis affects their meaning. Emphasis can control whether a は is contrastive or not, for example, and whether が is in a relative clause or not.

No. The intent behind what is being said affects their meaning. The emphasis is just used, among other situations, to more easily displays that meaning. Like when you read a novel or something, it's not like the writer can't intend a line to have emphasis on it, it's just harder to gauge than when hearing someone speak the same thing. Just take manga for example, the visual add-on helps show where emphasis is being applied in what a character is saying, but it's not like if the drawings were gone the emphasis is gone with it; it's just (to some degree) harder to gauge when the emphasis was intended.

well i personally don’t use grammar guides. i just look them up in my usual J-E dictionary which usually doesn’t have sentence examples or real “explanations” for grammar. i see a grammar construction in the wild, look it up with this, and then pick which one seems to make the most sense given the context. after that, more input takes care of the rest. unless i see it used it in a different way i’m not yet familiar with, then i just repeat the same process.

Talking about understanding here, not producing. Not going to finish reading your post if it's just saying "hurrrrrrrrrr things mean what the speaker WANTS them to mean!" like yeah no shit of course they do.

It still holds that は and が can help you understand how something is said. No need for the salt

I never attempted to object to that, not even in the slightest or through implication.

>The tonal and emphatic cues in natural spoken Japanese help a lot in determining what information is redundant, or being emphasized, or being introduced.
>Text doesn't have that.

>> No.21069181

>>21069174
Yes, text does not have the help of tonal and emphatic cues in determining what information is blah blah blah. That doesn't mean that there aren't other sources of that information. Not at all. It can't even be read that way.
