I don't think Matt's sentiments are that different. From what I can remember he's in favor of listening when you can as much as you can, but again it's just that passive immersion by itself is ダメ. I could be wrong about Khatz's sentiments, but I don't think he would cosign just passive immersion 24/7 either. We gotta be specific here.

Most anons are objecting to the idea of only doing active listening + background listening + audio-only i+1 flashcards for the first 1 or 2 years
Because "b-b-but I won't understand anything" and "it's SOOOOO hard"
Luckily Matt has just the right perfect solution to this problem
I just heard Matt say this
https://youtu.be/XkOGUyKv_iE?t=3115
So while you're doing listening-only active immersion for the first year
You're watching a TV show
Focusing on what's going on and what the characters are saying
(without subs of any kind)
What you're going to do is turn it into a game
Of spotting as many words that you can understand naturally (without seeing the written version)
Then spotting as many phrases then full sentences that you can understand naturally
After a year of this you'll have developed a solid native-like foundation in listening to Japanese
Your active study in Anki will be audio-only flashcards, audio in the front/word on the back, so only the Core 2k sentence will play, you'll hear it, try to understand it, and when you do, reveal the answer, which will only be the i+1 target word

>> No.21055391

>>21055388
And you have to do 1 hour max in Anki and AT LEAST 3 hours watching TV shows without subs and trying to understand as much as you can naturally from the sound and visual context alone, and NOT skip a single day.

>> No.21055398

>>21055388
>>21055391
And the premade deck (Core or Tango, the latter being recommended by Matt now over Tae Kim) is only to gain a foundation
TV shows with an external sub file are best, but you're not going to watch with subs.
The reason for choosing shows with subs is
When you hear a sentence and understand it naturally except for 1 word, that's when you use subs2srs to make cards out of the episode, and you use the timestamp to get that i+1 sentence out. Then you put it into Anki and make a card for it to study the next day

1. you don't need to send him a single cent to make use of his best advice
2. he spends most of his time developing AJATT 2.0 when he's not studying for college (so he can go to Japan with his degree, so he can develop even better content for us)
3. only asks for $5 so you can see the preview videos, and the full versions covering the essential theory get released to the public for free eventually
4. only $10 to discuss the method in his Discord - and only $1 if you want to see the latest of his innovations
5. his consulting fee isn't even that high considering how valuable his time is and how every hour working on fine-tuning MIA is ($100 for a 90 minute consult, you shouldn't even be considering this option until you're fluent and have invested good money in acquiring premium media - btw, from which not a single cent goes to Matt personally)

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day. — 'Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.' — Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.

Basically you should be less trusting of people who don't change their minds, because that means they are rigid in thought and set in their ways even if they are wrong.

So it turns out ます, ながら, and all the particles are actually words in themselves, and are all defined in the J-J dictionary.
Japanese grammar looks much easier now. I was leaning towards Chinese because the latter's grammar is ridiculously easy, since all grammar are just 1- and 2-kanji words. In Japanese they're just slightly more difficult and longer.

Mattposting day in, day out, every single hour of every single thread. You're never going to learn Japanese this way, you fucks, even if you DO have some kind of unnatural obsession with a random JSL with a shitty accent. Get the fuck out of here and consume Japanese. I know you're not because you're here literally all the fucking time. You are responsible for every single mistake resulting from your misapplication of your personal agency, and that includes all the time you waste away here not getting better at Japanese. No, listening to anime or dramas in the background is not getting better at Japanese. No, finishing your Anki reps for the day and shitposting on DJT for the next eight hours is not getting better at Japanese. The only way you're actually going to get any better at Japanese is by reading and listening to Japanese. The more the better. Any time you spend arguing about pointless crap here on DJT is time you spend either not learning Japanese or not getting your shambled life together so you can do something with Japanese once you know it. Get the fuck over your obsession with forcing people who don't know you and know nothing about you to hear your nonsensical dribble. Or are you THAT desperate for confirmation that you found the right golden lamb, but not desperate enough to give him 10 bucks a month so you can actually talk in his discord instead of just seeing the chatlogs go by? Jesus christ, get the fuck over it already. It doesn't matter. Nothing about DJT or Matt matters. None of the arguments you're having here matter. Nothing that you say about Japanese when you can't even describe the flavor of your own breakfast matters. None of the validation you get from other people who bought into the same bullshit matters. Get the fuck out of here and learn Japanese.

>> No.21056539

Once you finish the monolingual transition, it won't take any more time to make a monolingual card than a bilingual one. Often times it's even faster. If you learn a word bilingually, you are creating a false association you will have to break later, which wastes time. The monolingual def gives you a much better idea of what a word means, so it shorts the length of time it takes to acquire. The act of comprehending the language in the language is also a great exercise the expedites the speed at which your brain adjusts to the language.

Listening to girls called Stacy squeaking out “ah ree gar toe go zai moss oo” is not to your advantage. Especially if you are the girl called Stacy. That chick needs help.

Classes suck. Not only do they cost money, but they’re boring and they don’t work. You only need look as far as the number of people taking Japanese classes, versus the number of people who are actually good at Japanese. The people in charge of the classes will tell you that it’s because “Japanese is hard”; “Japanese is different”; “it’s the kanji”; “those East Asians are so inscrutable; they just don’t think like we do”. Bollocks! Absolute bollocks! There is nothing fundamentally difficult or different about Japanese. Very normal human beings speak, read and write it on a daily basis. The problem might be with the way we are learning it, but it would be unprofessional, dishonest, and an act of the most severe bollocks, to blame the object of our learning.

I’m not saying you can’t get anything valuable from a class. And I’m absolutely not saying that teachers are bad people. On the contrary, there are wonderful, dedicated teachers out there. They’re victims, too. They know it doesn’t work. They know that success in their classes is only tangentially related to success in actual Japanese. Many of them even admit that “you need to do Japanese outside the classroom”, but too often, that takes the form of goofy busywork assignments. Filling in the blanks. Woo! I’m going to be the best Japanese-blank-filler ever!…Please.

What helps in the real world of Japanese is something almost all classes punish: the ability to wing it. Of course I believe in preparation, but real life situations rarely follow the plan in all but the most general sense. The plan gets twisted and even broken, you forget a word and have to explain your way around it. Stuff happens, and you need to be able to think on your feet. In class it’s called BSing. In the real world, it’s called common freaking sense.

Perhaps classes and textbooks for Japanese made sense when they had a monopoly on information. Back in the day, outside of a class, there probably were no Japanese materials readily available to a person outside of Japan. And certainly for a rarer language, like Dzongkha, you might want to seek a class because materials are so scarce (but that’s a big “might”).

In any case, with the end of their monopoly on information, the typical Japanese language class as it exists is long past its expiry date. You have the information in your hands now, and you can use it far more efficiently than a class can. And yes, a lot of it’s unedited information, but the real world never did come neatly shrink-wrapped in mind-numbingly boring vocabulary lists with chapter headings. Plus, a lot of the stuff out there actually is edited. For example, Japanese dictionary companies have both an economic incentive and a Japanese cultural bias to do things well. So there. Class 0, You 1.

I’m 23 years old and very arrogant, but I still believe in asking people who know better for help. In this on-demand, consultative form (like Dr. Mary Noguchi’s Kanji Clinic), a class would have use.

But if you’re signing up for a typical “watashi wa sumisu desu” textbook-centered Japanese class hoping for a teacher, through the magical power of the textbook written by the experts at the Takagawa-Jones Institute for Samurai Studies and Good Japanese, to inject the special invisible Japanese sauce (that they keep in the closet at the back of the room) into your brain in 45-minute increments every weekday…then don’t hold your breath. Instead, save yourself the time and heartache, take your precious money and go buy some anime, or whatever, just something in real Japanese. Take a shopping trip to Amazon.jp. Trust me, it’s better this way…

lol nice write-up, and very true from what i observed when i took classes in college myself, mostly from watching others.

i think i was one of the lucky few that actually got something out of japanese classes because:
1. it introduced me to a lot of real life friends who were into japanese culture and language, which i didn't have before,
2. it got me a paid job helping the teacher, which meant i got to talk to her in japanese all the time as well as lead tutoring sessions where i had to know what i was talking about to teach other students,
3. my japanese teacher introduced me to a really sweet japanese girl who i got to have conversational lunches with every week, and
4. it eventually got me connections for a job in japan, where i am now.

i was really blessed with my experience of japanese classes.

that being said, i wish i'd started doing the things that really had big effects on my fluency from like 6 months in. i didn't really start going with raw anime listening and reading manga till like the end of the first year. and even then, other kids in the class would look at me like i was crazy when i said i was watching raw anime and reading raw manga. now, none of them are fluent at all. i think i'm the only one who came out of those classes with a considerable level of fluency. there was one other girl too, but she had already been studying on her own since highschool with drama CDs and idol stuff, plus she was chinese so kanji was easy for her.

I can't wrap my head around what exactly kanji is?

ok im really sorry if this is a very commonly asked question but i cant' find any website that explains it properly.ok so iv got a few questions. should I think of kanji as like ideograms? that's what iv been trying to do. why does a single kanji have so many different meanings? is it ok if i write everything in kana form without writing anything in kanji form? what' the point of kanji and why shouldn't i just write everything in kana form?

Kanji are the pictographic representations of eternal metaphysical principles. For more, see Cure Dolly's site:

> To anyone reasonably well versed in traditional metaphysics, the meaning of some of the basic kanji is immediately and transparently obvious. Unfortunately, Western writers on kanji origins, armed with the beloved “progress” ideology and a total ignorance of traditional thought, work hard to obscure this. Let us try to set the record straight.

More like MIA without the bullshit that doesn't do anything, doesn't help, and is likely to make people quit. Moogy didn't even use Anki, which often makes intermediates quit. I admit that Anki is very useful for beginners, so copying Moogy's learning experience to the exact details isn't a good idea, but MIA is too far in the opposite direction as far as immersion-based learning approaches go.

>sure
Not "sure". The difference is overwhelming.

If his VNDB is to be trusted, Moogy read something like 20 to 30 full length VNs in Japanese before he took the N1. A normal full-length VN is something like 400k to 1500k characters long. Let's go with 25 VNs and 600k characters each for the sake of simplicity. That's 15m characters. A normal novel is something like 200k characters long. That's like 75 something full length novels worth of text, over the course of something like eight or nine months. That's more than Matt has read in Japanese in his entire lifetime. And Moogy only kept on reading after that, he has more than 200 VNs under his belt.

>they listen more.
Moogy watched anime without subtitles of any kind. For pleasure.

>yea but an hour or two of anki out of 6+ hours of active immersion is better than none.

Only as an absolute beginner. As an intermediate, an hour of reading is significantly more helpful than an hour of Anki. In fact, spending more than 30 minutes on Anki per day is an indication that you're abusing Anki and not getting much out of it for the effort you're putting into it, which is the main problem with MIA's approach to Anki.

>no they didn't.

Background listening is literally 100% worthless. Putting Japanese music on repeat is more useful. Really.
>anki is always more efficient in terms of retaining vocab.
Anki is not more efficient if you read and listen so much that you're going to see everything more often in a natural context than you would in Anki. Anki is only useful when you're a beginner exactly because you can't read and listen enough for it to outpace Anki, but input can and necessarily will outpace Anki once you're intermediate.
>nick, ben, and patrick started ajatt when they started learning japanese.

this statement is bullshit. people who can speak japanese and go on jet, have a much better time in pretty much every way. especially if you’re placed in smaller towns.
JET doesn’t require it, but it does increase your chances of getting in, helps a hell of a lot in daily life, and saves a ton of stress and loneliness. most issues people have on JET are related to their lack of proficiency in japanese (isolation, issues with setting up utilities, being treated like a puppet in the classroom, etc)

In principle Anki can help by making you remember some of those words that you're bound to encounter a couple of times more often faster. But if your vocabulary is small you'll most likely add heaps of cards in a short amount of time with no indication which of these make sense to learn earlier.

Personally I will therefore only add a card if I encounter a word in the same text at least roughly 3 times. This automatically eliminates almost half of the vocabulary present in any single text. But I'm not autistic about keeping up exact counts either.

In principle, if you use html light novels and the likes where you got plain text, you could run a word count on it and choose to only add cards that appear at least n times in the whole thing.

>Which masadaverse game should I jump into first? Cheers.
Uuuh, I'll just say that I don't think you should be playing Masada games so early. Like, I am 100% a proponent of both reading early, and not being intimidated by hard games. I am also a proponent of of Masada games not being as hard as they are said to be.

But uh, regardless, you do NOT want to read a Masada game early on into your studies with no reading practice/grammar study/whatever. Like, Dies irae for example is a very abstract game. Fights are almost never "He punches but I block with elbow and explicitly punch him in his weakpoint which is his lower stomach." They're usually back and forth debates/yelling matches and whoever has the most GUTS wins. Like that is literally true. The battles in Dies irae are largely dialogue-based, and if you have a weak grasp of what's being said, none of them will be cool at all. Not only will you not appreciate the cool things Masada's doing with his prose, you won't understand what's going on. To say nothing of the broader plot! I have a friend who finished Dies irae and straight-up did not understand the plot. He didn't understand what had happened. Reason being, the plot is abstract. It's metaphorical. A good chunk of it's next to impossible to understand without intimate knowledge of the Masadaverse already, or otherwise an extremely good eye for subtle foreshadowing. All this culminates in the fact that in a game where you need to be very aware of the metaphors, allegories, and so on the author is pushing, a weak grasp on Japanese will SLAUGHTER you. I mean just RUIN the game. Like I said, my friend legitimately, 100% did not understand the plot. The simplest aspect of the game! He didn't get it, because it was too abstract and his Japanese too bad. There's no chart that appears on-screen explaining the true plot of the game. You have to pay attention and understand subtle things that bad Japanese will take a massive dump on. And even if you don't care about the plot, and don't mind finishing the game having no idea what happened, it remains that the bulk of the game itself (once you finish the SOL-heavy common route) are these extremely vague conversations that rely on subtext, and fights that are clashes of ideas not fists. In both cases, weak Japanese will just ruin the game. Maybe you've got such a boner for Masada that you won't be miserable skipping through conversations understanding nothing, but I really don't think it's a good idea overall.

tl;dr going anywhere near Masada games with weak Japanese is a death sentence, they're not as hard as people may think but they're still abstract, allegorical, and challenging texts that someone with weak Japanese simply will not be able to understand properly. And unlike say moege where not understanding things don't matter, there's a good chance you finish the game having not even understood the basic plot.

Yeah, it's far from a perfect solution.
I added some tips under the resources section of the guide ages ago on how to make it work better based on my experience:
https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/learn/guide.html#_Manga%20OCR
(looks like they finally got ported from the google docs version to one of the neocities guides)

>OR the kanji is really complex
I think it's more to do with the kanji being uncommon/obscure rather than complex. It seemed to me when I was using OCR that there were a lot of 表外漢字 (and maybe 人名用漢字, I don't really remember) where, no matter how clearly they were written, the OCR just wouldn't recognise them.

By the way, before you go and assume that a VN "doesn't work" with ITHVNR, make sure you try searching for hook code for it first. See this page:
http://vn-hooking.wikia.com/wiki/H-Code
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of hook codes that people have contributed there, but the page is a disorganised mess so you'll need to CTRL+F for the title you're looking for. There's a pretty good chance it's in there somewhere.

i pretty much feel this way about like just about any game that isnt plain romance sol or nukige

also where a dies irae is both very in ur face with the theatrics and subtle at the end of the day if u can read and have enough familiarity to handle it ull be fine (u dont have to get every single thing to enjoy it u just have pretty good proficiency cuz if u have to stop constantly its like stopping mid piss and ur just not gonna have a good overall piss)

whereas like a cross channel while it may not throw a billion kanji in ur face or whatever its more heavy hitting cuz its all done subtly with a poker face while reading like an aesops fable lol

if u dont know japanese u will lose to dies irae and have no idea what the thing even is but a cross channel u can read it and when i ask u what its about u will prolly be able to answer

but u will very likely be wrong and even the average japanese erogamer ends up being wrong

Someone should report this cunt's videos. He literally makes his living by linking people to copyrighted material that he didn't even put any effort into assembling, all the while putting said material at risk of getting nuked from the internet because of the attention he's bringing to them (again, just so he can get more fame and money for himself).

Once YouTube takes some of his videos down for copyright violations he should hopefully learn his lesson and stop.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqqHz85L0-E

Patreon money is the only reason he is still making videos, and he makes videos in the first place in hopes that more people will watch them and will also become Patreons. It would please me to punish you for not heeding by advice by saying nothing, but I will extend the olive branch and (assuming this isn't part of the troll) inform you that Acta est Fabula is an entirely reworked version of the game that added half the content, and Also sprach Zarathrustra is the meme bad version that goes nowhere and ends midway through. Amantes amentes is the censored all-ages version.

>I wasn't expecting to see my name mentioned here. Glad you liked my drawing! My only advice is to start using stuff like Anime sooner rather than later. You've already finished genki 2,thats plenty of primer. People can study without using native materials for years even reaching N1 level, but when they try watching Anime (or other native materials) they can't understand much. So don't put it off for too long

granted they prolly still watched tv or whatever but if it wasnt comprehensible input it might as well have been watching the wall cuz they didnt learn nothin at all
