This is pretty much my view on all J-Dramas... They all come off as incredibly superficial.
Cop and medical dramas have little semblance of reality in them with the all the pseudo Sherlock'ing they attempt to pull, it's so off-putting.

They're not even comparable, anon, completely different shows. I don't know if you're trying to be contrarian because of the constant praise it gets on this board but Hanzawa Naoki is a unique kind of show that we never get. To have a story that depicts the ugly aftermath of Japan's economic bubble and the people that were affected by it swearing revenge on those that walked free. This shit is staright up social commentary on topics that never get depicted in the way they do here; Japan's economic bubble, horrible salaryman work conditions, and the dichotomy between small and big businesses to name a few. Finally seeing a protagonist stand up and fight the oppressive system that plagues Japanese work environments is nothing short of cathartic. The 50% viewership rating was a silent protest by people all over the country, though it was in vain seeing as nothing changed, it definitely shows A LOT of fucking people care about these issues. The show having an entertaining plot and being well produced really adds to its high praise. There's a lot you can complain about but these merits place it in a favorable light in people's eyes. We can go back and complain even more once another show comes out with as equal as an impact but for now there's literally nothing out there like it.

I'm watching "Fruits Takuhaibin" right now, it tackles the fuzoku industry and acts like a sort of documentary thing which tells you what the industry looks like. It's good but it won't draw since the lead isn't someone from Arashi or some other established star. Before this I also liked "yamikin ushijima-kun" showing the loanshark scene with Takayuki Yamada but it was unpopular probably because people got triggered by the domestic violence and single mother-child relations portrayed in it.

This really bothers me since even if they only changed character's names but kept everything the same, they'd still manage to do a piss-poor adaptation job of those decent American series. It's probably a cultural thing but they really can't 'into suspense' in their mainstream prime-time TV. There's also the fact that those series are long running series and the Japanese just don't approach their series with sequels in mind, so they'll only get a small taste of what those series could have been before the season closes out and the series gets forgotten.

The thing that gets me with the Suits adaption was that the American one had an entire roadmap in mind over several seasons where they're going to flesh out each character over several years in numerous storylines while they hamfisted everything in an 11 ep series.
Overuse of tropes. Typical love triangle. We got a "climax" where people find out he's a fake but it doesn't matter in the end, and nothing changes after 11eps compared to the beginning of the series[/spoilers]
I hate this. There's no catharsis or any feeling of accomplishment when nothing actually happens and it all feels like a waste of time. No-one grows or changes to show that they've been through an ordeal.

Used to be much better, focused more on interesting social experiments, there was a certain flare of authenticity right down to the setups they used. Becky of course was amazing, not just as a host but she had a character called Kibe that acted crazy in otherwise normal bland japanese life. It completely changed once Becky was removed, tons of corporate shilling, setups that are so obviously fake, etc.

Not to my knowledege. But a lot of dramas are found on Avistaz or streaming sites like Kissasian. Nyaa has some live action too. Bagikuy and J-raws has raw vids while you can get subtitles from subscene or d-addicts. Netflix and Amazon shows eventually do get ripped.
