I just don't fucking care anymore about learning vocab, I'll just read a lot, look a lot up until I understand shit. Is that a good strategy? In some way, at least?
I'm just tired of having to repeat vocab all the time when I just want to have more input.

>> No.21047655

>>21047624
When I read I read. I don't bother obsessively mining everything I see because I don't care. I will look shit up and leave it at that. Some things stick and some don't. If you see stuff often enough you get the hang of it anyways. No one is forced to use Anki to do this.

anki is useful if you want fast vocab gains and decreased lookups. if you don't care about speed of vocab gains, or already have really infrequent lookups, then you don't need anki. for someone who still needs to look up every 5-10 sentences or even more often than that, anki is the superior choice for filling in those holes.

It doesn't, it's 寝た
>and きる because きった
it would help to specify the verb you're talking about, as multiple verbs use きる
>shouldn't all of them just end in った?
Why would they? What says they all should? (These are the questions you should be asking yourself, then look into them)

It's best, in my opinion to think about verbs that end in る as either being いる/える verbs, or not いる/える verbs. If a verb has the final sound いる or える (走る, 見る, 知る, 食べる), then it MIGHT conjugate regularly. By regularly I mean 見る for example 見た, 見て, etc. If you don't like me using "regularly" that's fine, but just know that I mean by dropping the stem off and then adding the endings. But there are exceptions, like 走る and 知る for example (知った 走った, etc etc). These exceptions are pretty rare though. And verbs that end in る, but don't have the いる / える sound at the end, like 成る (なる) for example, they conjugate like the いる える exceptions (なった, なって etc etc).

Finally returned to learning Japanese after a 3 month break where I lost interest. Doesn't feel like my comprehension level has really gone down much, if at all, though I do feel like my reading speed has gotten pretty sluggish compared to what it was before. Hopefully I should be able to fix that before long though.

Anyway, I was part way through a VN when I quit, and despite thinking I was only about 50% of the way through it, it turns out the remaining routes are really short compared to the ones I'd already cleared (finished one of them in a single day yesterday and got about half way through one of the remaining two today).

Since it seems like I will probably have finished this VN by either the end of tomorrow or Tuesday, does anyone have any recommendations for what I could read next? Because of the huge break I took, I don't have anything lined up. I can handle slice of life content just fine at the level I'm currently at, so something a bit more plot-heavy (but not Muramasa-tier difficult) seems like it would be a suitable challenge at this stage. Don't really care about the genre, so long as the story and characters are good/interesting.

This isn't a definitive answer by any means, but 1. it should be known that ひらく can apparently be used for both transitive and intransitive situations, and あく is strictly for intransitive situations (開く, not 空く or 明く) and 2. I looked up 「が開く」(intransitive) and all of the readings were あく, and for を開く (transitive) all of the readings were ひらく. So as a rule of thumb you're probably fine reading the intransitive instances as あく and ひらく for transitive instances.

To put it very simply, Romeo is far more intelligent than anyone reading this thread, including myself. There are a great deal of very high level concepts in Cross Channel and any aspiring reader is going to need to accept that he probably doesn’t understand it all. From there, you reach the point of actually researching and interpreting all this shit, which could take years, honestly. And then you also have to consider that the vast majority of people just don’t have the level of reading comprehension or education necessary to really start to approach interpreting and understanding Cross Channel on anything but a surface level.

Because those women are out for a different experience. They are not looking for something Japanese or else they would just date a Japanese guy. The last thing they want is some foreigner pretending he's Japanese.

As for the ones who are not looking for something else, they'll never date a fucking foreigner anyways if all they want is a genuine Japanese husband. Know your target audience. Wrong. Reading is the best way to acquire vocabulary (see, e.g. "Reading and Vocabulary Acquisition: Supporting Evidence and Some Objections," S. Krashen) and once you have a large vocabulary it becomes much easier to acquire the correct pronunciation by listening while reading along with transcripts of comprehensible material.

There, now you have two plausible-sounding theories that directly contradict each other, both with the same amount of empirical evidence which is to say none at all.

Kind of, but not really. The default vowels are a little different, and some people (like Matt) overcompensate when trying to use the Japanese vowels. Also, pitch accent is a bit different from stress accent, but only because it's not responsible for changing the qualities and lengths of vowels very much. Long vowels also actually exist. Aside from that, there's nothing difficult about Japanese phonetics at all.

Inadequate stories

The stories presented are too sexualized and sexist. You can't have a kanji for gates (#1616) without someone naming it lesbians and making them do nothing but be a fetiche. Also, many stories don't consider diversity and rely on old cultural standards to create a story, only reinforcing a system of opression. You might think this kind of problematization doesn't belong here, but I still can't shake off the image of two lesbians moaning and a guy trying to get to them (#1623). This is awful. Even if it achieves the goal of the book, this type of content shouldn't be allowed in the community.
Furthermore, as someone else in the comments has pointed out, even though RTK is mainly read by adults, children have to be able to read a study book like this and be kept away from sexual content.

Time to rethink the goals of this community and what can be allowed in here.

>> No.21052333

Unpleasant to read through and full of mistakes

This deck has too many sexual references to the stories. The stories add very little to the reading of even a PDF version of Heisig's RTK, and this deck arrangement of RTK show a lack of clue as it relates to Heisig's subtle arrangement of material. Too much self-congratulatory time is spent criticizing the originator of this Kanji mnemonic system when it is actually the deck creators that misinterprets the keys and primitives as in the keys for Flesh, Dr., and Decameron.

I guess the deck's creators didn't factor in that I would sit down with
my daughter to go through the deck. So academically primitive.Great for mysoginist teen-agers.

A lot of people seem to consider Japanese people "fake" or "cold". Especially Americans. I'm German so nothing about the Japanese demeanor bothers me.

If you come from a culture where it's normal to be social in every situation you're going to be weirded out. Japanese can be quite social but it's very dependent on the situation you're in. I've had a lot more people chat me up in a bar at night, but it never happens during the day somewhere out in public.

The rest should be common knowledge, like Japanese not liking to talk about opinionated things to people and what not.

こんにちは、guys. I just found out about this thread and I would like to share my "method"
I don't like any formal tutoring, so I jumped right onto reading.
I found a light 小説 I wanted to read on itazuranekko.

I mark a sentence and see if there is 漢字 I dont know. If there is, I immediately write that 漢字 down from a couple of times to even 10 times in a row (depending on the complexity of the 漢字). I don't care about stroke order, since I'm not a native 日本語 speaker and dont intend to pretend to be.

Finished with the new 漢字, I paste the sentence on google translator and, through a lot of try and error, I manage to separate the words and write down the meaning for individual words. I then read the sentence a couple of times.
I've been doing this for more than 3 weeks now and I can feel my japanese improving! 頑張って ne

Please share your methods and make recomendations to improve mine, if that's okay to ask here.

bakugo is such an unlikable character that the literal droplets of "development" we get simply cannot make up for it. it's like if there were a character that tortured innocent dogs for no reason and by 4 seasons into a show he had developed into a better person who only tortures mice. yea no. i don't even love to hate him. i just hate him.

what’s the point of practicing writing at all if you don’t care about stroke order? that’s just gonna make things harder as you encounter more difficult kanji, instead of easier like it would be if you got stroke order down correctly

it really hurts because i genuinely think BNHA has some of the best art in any ongoing shonen manga but i just can't read that shit at all. the way the narrative always treats him like a victim, characters forgive him for no reason no matter what a bitch he is, just no.
ougamadoki zoo was better... isn't an accurate statement, but at least the aquarium arc was pretty good and the characters were okay.

the main thing that's funny about this chart to me is the "expected reading times" on a beginner chart. if you're picking your first vn you can expect the duration to be 2, 3, or even 4x what they say to expect.

What do you mean "seriously" ? In his November patreon q and a he said he used passive immersion all the time when he was going hard on ajatt when he was in school. Its my understanding that he makes the distinction that passive immersion in itself isn't beneficial, but if used with material you've already watched/listened to it can have good benefits.

yea i wanted to drill certain important grammar points over the past month or two so i set the maximum interval to 2 weeks but i think i'm willing to worsen my retention a bit to keep the reviews down. most of the grammar i'm forgetting is stuff i'm not encountering much or at all while reading so i think it'll be OK.

You shouldn't have a reachable interval limit. Anything you forget will be failed and have its interval lowered appropriately. Anything you don't fail will continue to grow. That's the whole fucking point.

Took me pretty much the entire day of non-stop reading, but I managed to check off another route. Just one more to go now. Hopefully I can finish that tomorrow and move onto something new at long last. I've been reading this VN since mid November of last year, whereas I should've finished it in early-mid January.

I have enjoyed this VN (君が主で執事が俺で) a lot though, which might not be very obvious from the fact that I took a three month break from it and am seemingly eager to finish it. If I didn't like it, I wouldn't have been able to spend the last 3 days straight doing pretty much nothing but reading it non-stop all day. There's a lot of good humour and the characters are all great, and for anyone who likes collecting 四字熟語 there are absolutely tons of them in this. Difficulty-wise, it's not Hanahira or Flyable Heart tier easy, but it's not all that hard either. Definitely recommend it to anyone who has a couple of VNs under their belt and is looking for something new to read.
