There's a lot of people who never use RTK and reach fluency. And the gap between when I finished RTK and when I learned vocab for each kanji in RTK was so long that I had forgotten most of RTK's keywords so it's basically as if I hadn't done it. And I learned words fine.

You could have prevented the public humiliation of Tae Kim and the gradual obsolescence of his guide. You could have prevented it. But you didn't. You twiddled your thumbs and cheered him on, hoping everything would resolve itself. But you should know better. A single person can't fight back against a circlejerk of eternal beginners alone.

You could have prevented the death and obsolescence of DJT and the end of the filtering-out and fixing-in of sane learning materials. You could have prevented it. But you didn't. In the name of fairness and neutrality, you filled the guide with garbage, triggered hundreds of hours of arguments about RTK, redistributed terrible anki decks and kanji books made by people with negative amounts of understanding of Japanese, and exposed it all to the wider internet, attracting political spam so bad the thread got banned from /a/. But you should know better. Neutrality attracts conflict, of all kinds, intellectual, ideological, and civil.

You could have prevented the rise of Matt and MIA and the degradation of input-based learning methods. You could have prevented it. But you didn't. You pointed and laughed, saying, that's hilarious, nobody's going to buy that. But you should know better. Underage weebs and mentally unwell young adults don't have such clear judgment as you.

All we've got left is George, our nico nico douga memes, and our porn. Lots, and lots, and lots, of porn.

Yeah I'm glad this thread's residents don't liveblog their anime and VNs and manga and light novels and games that would be really annoying. That doesn't mean they're not consuming them or that they don't drop recommendations on other people.

Alternatively: Oh no, the thread isn't filled from top to bottom with bad image memes made by people who watched three episodes of some show and spent twenty hours shitposting about it in a template thread with its name in the subject field, it must not have anyone who cares about actually consuming media in it.

I know you've felt this way for a super god damn long time, but get real. The reason that 4chan is full of paranoid boogeymanning, eceleb trash, and ideological spam is bad moderation. It doesn't matter what thread it is. If it's interesting, bad posters will come. You have to deal with them. Self moderation has never worked. And it's never going to work. No matter how much you think it should. Don't pin the management's failures and willful ignorance on the attendees.

>You could have prevented the death and obsolescence of DJT
This happened as soon as DJT was moved to /jp/. That alone cut new blood coming in from /a/, which before you get board-elitist about, means far less new learners and less people learning Japanese. Activity on this thread got cut in half, more than half. Maybe it's about 1/4th as active as it used to be if that. Anyway, instead of a huge flow of people coming in and learning Japanese, it's just a couple of /jp/ rejects. Hell, 50% of the posts in this thread are Jamal sucking his own dick. DJT is less a place for new learners nowadays and more a general thread for regulars to have fun in. Barely anyone's actually learning Japanese like they used to.

i just read the first chapter of dies irae today. when i started 2 years ago my reason was to read the vn in original japanese. after reading those first few scenes I learned that the book is written in FUCKING LATIN!!! so i wanna go into a bit more detail of what it feels like to get "high" off meditation. 耳を澄ませ

first a disclaimer, if you go into it "trying to get high" you're gonna fuck it up cause your attention will be on the desire/craving to "get high" rather than the actual concentration and awareness necessary to do so

anyway the actual practice of meditation involves concentrating on the breath, confronting whatever your mind poops out as you try to do so (theres a LOT of poop built up in there guys... years worth of constipation aka stuffed-down emotions), clearing that poop through nonjudgmental objective awareness, then returning focus to the breath. you do this over and over.

when your awareness becomes free enough of constipated mind-poop (like anxiety, boredom, distraction, random thoughts, anger, etc) you can access intense clarity and joy that legit feels better than or at LEAST as good as orgasms..... its a delightful tingling sensation you can feel spreading from the head/heart area, throughout the entire body

sometimes i just sit there soaking it in like a 10+ minute orgasm... i just did that earlier and i feel great. a sense of joy and lightness continued even after i got up.

Yes if you assume those hours are spent consuming material which is challenging to you. Then I'd argue its even not feasible to for 4 hours at one thing, at least not without breaking it up into 1 or 2 hour intervals.

However once your base level understanding is reasonably good you can easily do 6+ hours a day. Of course you won't learn that much, but at worst its good reinforcement.

Overall the importance of reinforcement is bigger than people seem to give it credit for. Everyone seems focused on learning new things and mining new words. I treat reading and watching stuff as the most enjoyable way to practice what I already know. Learning new things along the way is a bonus, but also way more exhausting.

agreed. i strongly believe that our input in any given day should consist of materials at different levels of difficulty.

i personally try to have one anime i'm watching raw thats super easy, and one thats medium/hard difficulty that i watch with subs. same for listening -- a hardish book with lots of markings and farming, and a super easy book i can breeze through. that kind of alternation seems to mix things up, eliminate burnout and provide lots of reinforcement.

It's not a limit, it's diminishing returns. And the useful amount of input increases the longer you've been at it. If you've been reading and listening to significant amounts of Japanese every single day for two years, then every hour you spend on Japanese counts, unless you start depriving yourself of sleep to add more hours of Japanese (don't do this). On the other hand, if you're a literal absolute beginner who barely recognizes the kana and maybe knows like twenty words, then 30 minutes of reading will probably push them beyond their limit, and nothing they do for the next several hours will stick.

Do you constantly look up every word when reading tho? Like if someone were to use the reading method and not use anki at all. How could you possibly remember what kanji is what, when you see a couple hundred before seeing the same one again in such a short time

I read for like an hour today and looked up like 4 words. I was reading 素晴らしき日々 dont know if that is considered hard but i find it quite easy.

anki is definitely not necessary but i still think it's a good tool for "perfecting" your skills with less common words
the most important thing is that you keep reading

lmao weird things
honestly im really enjoying it right now because the balance i have between reading/listening is great. 3 hours of reading and listening to every 20 minutes of anki.

and nowadays literally every time i read or watch anime for >10 minutes, i encounter a word i recently learned via anki. feels great

so as long as it keeps paying off ima keep doing it. ill likely take a break from it when i stop seeing real life gains

I view anki like cigarettes, there are useful aspects of it like how with smoking you get breaks and get to make friends while smoking, but it gives you cancer. anki is similar in how it can introduce structure and goals to a person who is not very motivated or interested in japanese, but the mentalities it gets you in and the time it wastes means that i can not think of it as anything but harmful for japanese.

Honestly I never felt like anki was helpful at all back when i used it, like i would see a word a lot in anki but i would associate it with the deck as you are aware of intervals and what cards are in your deck so when i saw the word naturally i would not remember it, plus i just simply was miserable using anki. I would put off everything for hours every day because i needed to do anki first thing and it would waste and ruin so much time.

anki aint all bad if u dont overdose but the people who most highly praise it are people like >>21001245 who have not yet discovered that their brain is capable of learning through natural exposure

sounds like you just got obsessive and didn't know how to balance it adequately with input. thats not really a problem with the tool but your mentality around it. all anki is supposed to do is tag new bits of information (words, grammar structures) between exposures until they're healthy enough to survive on their own.

my process is input --> anki --> back to more input (which i can then get through more of faster because i know more). it all reinforces eachother.

i don't use premade decks and haven't since i began. comparing anki to cigs is like calling water poison because you can die if you drink 10 gallons at once. well, yeah.. but in moderation its great for you.
