Reimu is a terrible character with no redeemable traits, and we have to see her in all material because she's the main character. PC-98 Reimu is her better version, both design-wise and in personally. Being a genocidal child maniac suited her.

Hatate is unironically ZUN's worst design. Her tacky purple checker design and modern twin tails don't match with the image of tengu at all. It doesn't help that her flip phone looks like a low-tier Chuck-E-Cheese prize either. For someone who's not from the Outside World like Sumireko or not from Gensokyo like Clownpiece/Hecatia, Hatate looks bizarrely and retardedly modern. She doesn't have a lore reason to exist either other than to be a rival to Aya and a gimmick for Double Spoiler. Hilarious because ZUN has never even acknowledged her outside that game other than a one-frame cameo in Aya's HSiFS ending. Overall shit character with no reason to exist.

That sounds fucking retarded. Gensokyo isn't a dream, Sumireko can just enter Gensokyo through her dreams through another body. There's 3 Sumireko. The real one in the Outside World, the Dream Sumireko, and Sumireko's Projection. When Sumireko sleeps, another body manifests in Gensokyo (her projection). And, anyway, the Dream World already exists and Gensokyo is not apart of it.

I hate Mima, though 99% of that hate is from secondaries chanting her name each time a new game drops despite her being gone since 1998. 1% is for her design, it's not great. As far as characters I hate strictly for designs, Hecatia and Reisen are up there. Reimu is the only character I can say I hate for her personality.
