This is a not Japanese language learning thread for those not interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, not bangers, and Japanese video games.
If you have interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is the thread for you.

All these links are fucking terrible.

Does anyone happen to have this Japanese The Manga Way deck by any chance?

Since Fabrice that massive cock sucking whiny faggot is going to close down the forums I was hunting down interesting threads before they are gone for good and stumbled upon this:

I'm a literal NEET, how many kanji should I be learning per day from RTK?

I'm a slow reader so it usually takes me about an hour to read through 20 kanji in the book. Theoretically, I could learn 80 new kanji in 4 hours.

Is this too much, even for someone with this much free time?

don't listen to any e-peen cocksucker in these threads. go at your own comfortable pace, but try to push yourself.
there are cocksuckers who will claim they "learn" 60 kanji a day in 5 minutes just by looking at them once. unless you are an autistic polyglot with an isolated talent it is most likely that ca. 15 of those will actually stick, unless you regularly club-rotate them in anki.

I'm a genkifag who's about to finish this dreadful book. So far I've only done repetition by myself, by creating a stupid list on paper with vocab, hiragana words that I would write into kanji by hand afterwards and grammar notes that I re-read every now and again.
I realize my ways are far from ideal, so after I push through with this crap, I really want to change the method
I think that dedicating my life for the next 3 months exclusively to RTK would be silly, since I already came to n4-ish level with genki.
Would it be a lot better if I did RTK slowly and still practice/learn everything else?
I'm still skeptical about RTK, but everyone recommends it so much that I figure I'm just gonna do it, at least an hour or 2 a day until I'm done with it.
Is it true that learning many kanji a day is much easier with RTK? Is 25 kanji a day actually possible, without creating an incomprehensible mess in my head? With genki's vocab method I can barely learn 16 kanjis every few days. And even then I sometimes mess some up.
I really want to start reading more too...
Any advice would be very appreciate "dtj"

Since RTK only builds upon radicals it already taught you, 25 a day is fairly easy. I did about that many but I also wrote down every kanji on paper 50 times and created my own stories and keywords, because I'm ESL and it was better to have the answers on my own native language. If you use a premade deck, it will go even faster than that.

Why don't you fucking try it already?
No, doing 25 kanji a day with RTK won't create a mess in your head.
RTK is far from mandatory.
RTK will however allow you to learn Kanji in a "tangible" way, meaning you will remember characters as something more than just "that one character in that one word which shape is blurry in my head". Note that RTK isn't ideal though, meaning it could be done much better and both heisig's and koohi's stories suck complete ass

>> No.20973013

>>20972985
The whole create your own story thing seems very alien to me, but mostly that amount seems huge to study in a day. I'm really looking forward to this I hope it shapes up nicely.
I'm an ESL too and I don't know whether I should do it in English or translate it to my native language. I guess I have to try both and see which works out best for me.

>> No.20973016

>>20972600
It depends on how many hours a day you want to dedicate. I'd start with 20, and go up from there. I wouldn't scale up until you've done 7 days at that number and feel you can still do more.

That being said, I did about 50 a day over the summer and I finished in 2 months of 2-3 hours a day of study.

>> No.20973018

>>20973009
I really want to try it, but I figured I spent so much time with Genki, I might as well push through with it, even if I'm still learning its kanjis in what seems to be the most ineffective way imaginable. I can't even begin to imagine how learning 25 kanjis a day would be manageable. And then not screw those up a lot.
Even some of the explanations given for grammar rules are absolute garbage in Genki.
I just want to get it over with, it should only take me about 2 more weeks

>> No.20973024

>>20972947
With RTK you can memorize dozens of kanji a day because its mnemonics allow you to store them in a different type of memory. This is unlike learning them from Genki.

I usually learn 25 per day from RTK at *minimum*, so it's really not as daunting as it sounds

>> No.20973038

>>20973024
How exactly do you study from RTK, anon?
Do you write down the kanji a few times and conjure up a story, and then review them later through anki just to be sure that you remember it?
Learning them once and making up that story isn't gonna be sufficient if you don't rehearse, correct?
So besides 25 new kanjis a day, I will also need to rehearse most of the previous ones, right?

>> No.20973050

>>20973038
You should definitely use some kind of SRS system to review the kanji that you've learned. Most people use the anki deck.

I usually only wrote the kanji once per card, even when learning them the first time. But, I only passed a card when I could write the kanji correctly, with no mistakes, and I had my reviews set to 1 10 120, so I'd end up writing it at least 3 times over a spaced period.

diary
Edogawa Ranpo

It was just the first night of the night. I entered a deceased younger brother 's study, and took out something that he wrote something, I was absorbed in thought by myself.
Still, even though I have not indulged in the night, the inside of the house has become tearful, and I am quietly returning. I brought it there and somehow I am playing a new school play, but from the distant people, the voices of goods sounding, etc. are also sadly sounding. I forgot for a long time, I became a childish, relieved feeling, suddenly, I watched a diary of my brother's diary that was there.
Even if I look at this diary, I can not but feel pity on our brother who has left this world without knowing love.
My younger brother, who was shy and had few friends, had a lot of time to withdraw from the nature study. Even from a diary written entirely with a thin pen, his nature can be seen sufficiently. There are childlike though it is childish about the so-called youth's troubles that anyone is experiencing, such as doubt about life, troublesome about faith or his age, but how wrongful and sincere sentences write down There is.
I went by page with Paige one by one with a feeling that I looked at my own past figure. As far as those pages come from, the cowardly eyes like the younger brother's dove staring at me staring from the back of the sentences written there.
Then, as I read it until March 9th, there was something I was drawn to my eyes as much as I thought unintentionally a mild scream. That is, Pottsri and the name of a supple woman appeared for the first time in the sentence of purity that diary. And Mr. Yukie, who is written as "Kitagawa Yukie branch Yukie (postcard)" in a place printed as "Calling field", I know well, I am a beautiful young girl who is far away from us It is.
Then my brother may have fallen in love with Mr. Yukie. I suddenly felt that way. So I remembered a sort of faint horror and still saw it ahead of him, contrary to my enthusiastic anticipation, Mr. Yukie did not appear in the body of the diary at all It was. However, in the reception field of the next day, it is said that "Kitagawa Yukie (postcard)" is followed for a few days, and only the name of Mr. Yukie is noted in both the reception field and the transmission field is. And also for those who sent out from March 9th to May 21st, the recipients also started in the same hour and continued for a short period of time that is less than March until May 17th Only then, even after the younger brother 's medical condition advances and can not take a brush, even to the last page to be said that his writings in the midst of October, Mr. Yukie also comes out It was not.
If counted, it was only eight times from him, there were ten sentences from Mr. Yukie, and in addition to him and Mr. Yukie also noted "postcard" Looking at it, it can not be thought that the writer wrote the kind of wording that the other person probably would be scared. And it is not thought that he actually kept writing that there was more fact than it actually thought from the whole tune of the diary.
I felt relieved and disappointed, and I kept my diary. And it was that my brother was lonely feeling that he died without knowing love.
Eventually, I lifted my eyes and saw on the desk, I noticed there was a small warehouse of my younger brother 's daughter. It seems that he had paid the most important items before his life, in an old-fashioned wooden box of that high maquette, or is he not hiding anything that heals this lonely feeling and gives me kure? From such curiosity, I unexpectedly opened the warehouse and saw it.
Then, among them, various documents not related to this story were put in, but from the bottom of the story, Oh, was that so? A picture postcard from Mr. Yukie went out, with eleven postcards wrapped in blank paper of great importance. Let's put it in the bottom of the warehouse so that no one sent by a lover so carefully.
While I was suddenly cranked, I examined the eleven postcards one after another. My hand holding a postcard for some impression even even tremblingly touched.
But what happened? In those postcards, I can not find a feeling of love sentence in any way, from any sentence or even from any line between the sentences.
Then, my younger brother, from his timid temperament, do not even break through the mind, just like this, some of these postcards sent from missing people, meaningless, like an amulet Have you kept it carefully and being to hearted even if you poisoned it poorly? And, at last, has it left this world with an unrequited feeling?

that isn't even unrealistic. the chinks simplified their kanji so fucking hard over the time, unlike the Japs who love to fold their kanjis TEN THOUSAND TIMES like honoboru samurai. only if you learned for 20 consecutive years how to knead soba noodles are you worthy to play the shamisen. this kind of bullshit elitism is holding the Japanese back, yet at the same time it keeps the niggers, muslims and jewpigs out of the country. because no low-life parasitic welfaring subhuman wants to voluntarily jump through so many hoops for basically no benefits at all. that's why they all love to come to Europastan - the land of the free gibsmedats. based fucking radioactive gooks.

I'm not posting the Jap but if anyone has any pointers I'd appreciate it. The last sentence especially I'm unsure of the meaning.

>It was the night of the memorial service. I entered my deceased younger brother's room lost in the delusion that I might find be able to come out with something like a memoir of his.
Although the night was still young, the house was already steeped in tears and weighed down by silence. There I brought from the library some manner of short reform screenplay. Hawkers touting their wares could be heard far from the house, yet the deep sadness prevailing would not lose out. I went too long forgetting these feelings, from a young age and with ardent heart, I unconsciously opened my brother's diary that lay there.

You can definitely still learn words that way if you run into them often, but chances are you'll just highlight it every single time and never remember it.

No it does about 1% of the effect of putting into anki and memorizing it. Even after you memorized the word you have to get used to it. And then you have to learn to listen for it which is mostly a completely different mental game. Once you can read and hear it easily you can usually say it pretty quick at that point. But yea just hover decking isn't doing much from my experience unless you see the word 50 times and read like a mad man.

That would be a sentence card, which is a really bad idea. You shouldn't have sentences on the fronts of your cards. Reading or listening to them in full makes your Anki reps take way too much time, and if you don't read or listen to them in full then you start recognizing the card based on the shape or the sentence rather than whatever you're trying to learn from it.

i used to do this, but still reviewed the word in intervals

i'd write the date i wrote the list, the day i reviewed it and the next due date on the same page as each list. i wrote the next due date in a special corner so i could easy flip through to check what i needed to review.

my review intervals were something like,
1 day
3 days
7 days
14 days
30 days

then i considered the list cleared. pretty much notebook anki.

anki requires consistent access and you can't control or delay the spacing yourself if you have to go on vacation or something, and the system for drilling stuff you've already learned is confusing

for memorizing truly small amounts of information that don't demand the automatic organiaztion of a computerized SRS, traditional paper methods and songs are easier for most people

anki reviews, 4 times a day, 5 minutes per session = 20 minutes, or 90~110 reviews.

- 5 min before getting ready for work
- 5 min during commute to work
- 5 min during lunch break at work
- 5 min otw home from work

reviews for the day already done by the time i get home, so i can watch anime/play eroge/bullshit with friends and generally have a jolly ol time while still reaping the benefits of anki

From Wikipedo:
"Agglutinative languages tend to have a high rate of affixes or morphemes per word, and to be very regular, in particular with very few irregular verbs. For example, Japanese has very few irregular verbs – only two are significantly irregular, and there are only about a dozen others with only minor irregularity; Ganda has only one (or two, depending on how "irregular" is defined); while in the Quechua languages, all the ordinary verbs are regular. In Turkish, there is only one irregular noun (su, meaning water), no irregular verbs other than the copular verbs, and two existential particles. Korean has only ten irregular forms of conjugation except passive and causative conjugations. Georgian is an exception; it is highly agglutinative (with up to eight morphemes per word), but it has a significant number of irregular verbs with varying degrees of irregularity."

When he said he wasn't really interested in Japanese but is interested in Chinese i had a brief moment of hope for him, Then he said he doesn't see any point in doing anything unless he can do it at a high level, which means he's fixated on the goal and not the process and so will never be satisfied. And then he showed a timeline just like all the other ones he was never able to stick to. And then he said he's still using Matt's techniques.

So, what's the over/under on the number of days until he gives up and deletes all his social media again? I say 90.

RTK for readings is full retard, no-one seriously suggests you approach it this way

use RTK to get all the kanji into your head and be able to recognise them in association with a rough "location" in idea-space

then learn vocabulary while paying attention to which kanji are used in it

end result: can read kanji without "knowing the readings" of each kanji, or at least, without needing to have drilled them

no you don't. knowing by recognition is just as valid as knowning by reproduction. in this age you don't actually have to write anything in japanese ever (except in rare cases and even then it'll be a specific 分野 rather than every kanji you know). if you can type up entire essays and emails in japanese, that's fluency.

I'm not sure. Once you get past the initial problems of kanji and the differing sentence structure, it's not as hard as my native (Serbian for clarity) would be. It's near impossible for foreign people who learn the language to not fuck up cases and tenses regularly even after decades of speaking it as their primary tongue. Those two things are the basics for speech "sounding right" to natives. The grammar itself is also substantially more complicated than Japanese. Feynman put it like this: The purpose of language is communication.
'''
Richard Feynman, Gell-Mann’s chief competitor for the title of the World’s Smartest Man but a stranger to pretension, once encountered Gell-Mann in the hall outside their offices at Caltech and asked him where he had been on a recent trip; “Moon-TRAY-ALGH!” Gell-Mann responded in a French accent so thick that he sounded as if he were strangling. Feynman — who, like Gell-Mann, was born in New York City — had no idea what he was talking about. “Don’t you think,” he asked Gell-Mann, when at length he had ascertained that Gell-Mann was saying “Montreal,” “that the purpose of language is communication?”

Feynman was a できない子ちゃん.

「While in Kyoto I tried to learn Japanese with a vengeance. I worked much harder at it, and got to a point where I could go around in taxis and do things. I took lessons from a Japanese man every day for an hour. One day he was teaching me the word for "see." "All right," he said. "You want to say, 'May I see your garden?' What do you say?" I made up a sentence with the word that I had just learned. "No, no!" he said. "When you say to someone, 'Would you like to see my garden? you use the first 'see.' But when you want to see someone else's garden, you must use another 'see,' which is more polite." "Would you like to glance at my lousy garden?" is essentially what you're saying in the first case, but when you want to look at the other fella's garden, you have to say something like, "May I observe your gorgeous garden?" So there's two different words you have to use. Then he gave me another one: "You go to a temple, and you want to look at the gardens..." I made up a sentence, this time with the polite "see." "No, no!" he said. "In the temple, the gardens are much more elegant. So you have to say something that would be equivalent to 'May I hang my eyes on your most exquisite gardens?" Three or four different words for one idea, because when I'm doing it, it's miserable; when you're doing it, it's elegant. I was learning Japanese mainly for technical things, so I decided to check if this same problem existed among the scientists. At the institute the next day, I said to the guys in the office, "How would I say in Japanese, 'I solve the Dirac Equation'?" They said such-and-so. "OK. Now I want to say, 'Would you solve the Dirac Equation?' -- how do I say that?" "Well, you have to use a different word for 'solve,' " they say. "Why?" I protested. "When I solve it, I do the same damn thing as when you solve it!" "Well, yes, but it's a different word -- it's more polite." I gave up. I decided that wasn't the language for me, and stopped learning Japanese.」

My Japanese-American high school ex-boyfriend absorbed nihongo as a child in the home. They speak only nihongo in the home. This person can speak naturally about any topic, he can understand anything better than you guys, and he can read slowly especially with furigana. He doesn't read much nihongo as far as I know. He doesn't write much. This is just one person, but this is an example of the speaking-only type of fluency that can arise without effort. i put the sentence on the front, and reading/meaning on the back. but recently for the front i've started putting the new objects seperately, and *then* the whole sentence. see pic for deets.

I have it on my phone. I don't even know how to explain it. I've been doing it for a year and a half and now the effort that it requires to stay focused for that hour is literally unbearable. It's like saying "just don't shoot up heroin lmao" to an addict. I have no fucking idea how it managed to come to this point and I am considering drugs now.

You are not lying, you are just retarded. You have fucked yourself by this point. The longer you keep going like that the more time you will have to spend re-learning that shit properly because none of that will stick.

You just can't read or do math. 2 x 60-90 is 120-180.
Also the time increase is due to me doing it on ankiweb because ankidroid stopped working after I switched to the v2 scheduler lmao.

BTW I know I can only go through this load for about 4 more days, after that I finish the Core2k and move it to review only. The kanji are the easier part (though it takes more time).

What I am saying is that you are already in review hell. Even if you have a way above average memory there is no way to genuinely learn 2000 words in a month, let alone do that with kanji. Even if you stop adding new shit altogether it will either:
1. Keep accumulating as you slowly realize that you are only recalling vague translations/aren't remembering kanji readings etc.
2. Be borderline useless because you will just keep halfassing it.

There is also a hard limit on how much hard learning you can force yourself to do on daily basis without sacrificing everything else. You will hit the wall any day now and it will make both 1 and 2 twice as bad.

This happened to me more or less. One day during my reviews I just started blanking on shit I remembered learning. Was a hard pill to swallow to realize I didn't actually learn the last 500 words I'd studied. I restarted my mining deck and lowered my new words from 40 per day to 20-25 which is about the upper limit of what I can manage.

The typical person lives only a few years longer now than they did back then, once you ignore people who didn't have the chance to reach puberty.

Lolis only exist in 2D, so I was obviously referring to 2D only.

VN Core is the best deck to have chosen if you want to drop it early and start mining, just don't delete it or stop reviewing until a couple hundred cards from it are mature or you'll temporarily unlearn them and have to learn them again slowly through exposure/mining.

>> No.20981934

i have mined a word every couple of days that really sticks out to me but i kinda just wanna get vncore out of the way. and once all of vncore gets mature i'll delete it.

>> No.20981948

>>20981934
Don't bother getting it all to mature, everything in it is so common you'll surely know it all by heart a month or two from now. Giving it a week or two after you stop adding new cards from it is enough, as long as you start reading and listening enough and/or mining.
