Grammar isn't the end all be all portion of learning Japanese, but it is essential that you have a solid understanding of grammar if you want to expand your writing/reading ability. OP, immerse yourself. Take classes, grind kanji (its like im really leveling in an mmo!), and make an effort to study grammar.

Classes will generally give you a chance to practice actually speaking, and often times you'll get assignments to write speeches and whatnot. There's nothing worse than studying Japanese primarily by yourself online and then choking up when a chance to use Japanese in real life comes up. I've learned that the hard way in the past. That's why speaking Japanese with others is necessary to fluency.

Japanese grammar is extremely systematic and easy to follow. There are very few "exceptions" to rules, and even then they're easy to understand (conjugating する、来る、嫌い being a な verb as opposed to い, etc.)

I would like to propose a theory regarding grammar.

The thing is, I used to support the idea of not paying specific attention to grammar. When you're fluent in a language, you never stop to think whether you're obeying any specific grammar rules, the structure just comes automatically after your subconscious mind has stored every sentence pattern you've heard in your life. However, upon trying to read Japanese, I was disappointed to learn that it was quite hard to understand with my minimal knowledge of grammar.

So what I concluded from this was that grammar can be put into two categories, grammar that affects the meaning of the sentence, and grammar that just needs to be learned to not sound like a retard. The former is required to be able to read and understand Japanese and would be best to learn through textbooks, while the latter is just needed to express yourself and is best learned through reading Japanese. Only problem is that I've never seen a grammar guide that only teaches the former.

But do anyone agree with this? Does it make any sense?

Learn grammar first. Then learn vocabulary/ kanji.

I really recommend learning (Japanese) grammar. It's one thing to know how to say things and another to know why you are saying them that way. For example, I should go over English grammar again because there are still structures I'm not sure how to use properly.

I was put in a "special" class at primary school when I was 10, I was taught Japanese by a really pretty Japanese woman called Noriko.
I didn't learn much though cause we just did origami all the time instead, then when I went to high school I took it again and learnt the Hiragana and Katakana and a few Kanji in a few weeks, but I was never good at the phrases etc and failed, then I left school because I got sick.
I'm 20 now and I can finally go to university this year without needing any previous qualifications and will be doing Japanese again ^_^
I'm really excited.

What if "生徒は３９人で、教師が一人。" refers to how many corpses were found, and "遺体は全部で４１体、子供が４０で大人が一。" refers to how many there should have been?

"子供が一人多い…" would then mean that there was 1 more person in the class than how many corpses were found, rather than there being 1 more corpse than there should have been.

As for the missing corpse, it was hanging in the classroom as a result of the explosion. The weather returned to normal the next day because it was taken down.
