This is a not Japanese language learning thread for those not interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, not bangers, and Japanese video games.
If you have interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is the thread for you.

All these links are fucking terrible.

Working thru the start of Baldr Sky on NG+ (i guess you could call it?) and I think I'm just gonna reread the whole common route while I'm at it. I can understand it a lot better and faster now, so I'm also picking up a lot of world building that I just flat out didn't understand the first time around. NG+2 and onward I'll skip stuff I've already read, but I think this is probably the right way to do this.

By NG+ do you mean having finished all 6 routes and replaying it, or just doing the second route with Nanoha?

By the way, don't stress too much about the school memories part, because between routes 4 and 5 I believe a new menu appears where you can (and should) read the entire school part in sequence, now without anything missing. If you keep re-reading it every single time you will get sick of it by then.

If at least 2000-10000 nips have typed it, depending on the length of the phrase, I'm convinced it's A-Okay. This particular one has 189,000 results. There's actually submeasures for each trait. So for example conscientiousness has an "organization" and "productivity" submeasure. You could score low in productivity but still score pretty well on conscientiousness if you're highly organized. Of course, conscientious people are still going to be both organized and productive on average.

Another example of a trait with different submeasures would be openness. You can be intellectually curious (pic related) but have no creativity whatsoever like myself and get an overall score in the middle. People high in openness tend to be more creative, but when you break down subscores you'll find a few exceptions like myself.

With low creativity and productiveness I could never learn Japanese. So I gave up.

From what I've noticed, roughly 3 times out of 4 when Google throws a romajified word at me, as in this case where it's just the word "access" combined with "can't do," that's not what Japanese people actually tend to say. For example, if you ask Google what the best word to use for "sound" is, it might tell you "sa-u-n-do" even though I know from experience that Japs typically use "oto" instead. You just had this explained to you:
>It prevents you from seeing kanji as just random squiggles, and be able to easily tell them apart from one another.
>it helps you learn vocab, it doesn't necessarily help you read off the bat. it's much easier to learn vocab if you don't have to worry about keeping kanji and shit in your head at the same time
Think it's dumb? I'd agree with you. No reason to mass learn the "meaning" of kanji without learning their readings because you have to delay reading actual Japanese for too long. Usually months and many, many hours. RTK is stupid.

But stop saying you don't get it. You do. Dumb fuck.

So obviously you're not going to learn that at the same time, right? You need to learn that 羊 means sheep, and that ひつじ means sheep, two different bits of information.
What if you take a ten minute break in between? Does that still make sense?
How about an hour? You're getting lunch, does the information you learned on the kanji 羊 become useless?
How about a day? You learned 羊 at the end of the day, and ひつじ the next. Is the information you learned yesterday useless now?
How about a week? You went on vacation in between, but kept sure to stay up to date on your reviews so you still know exactly what 羊 means. Is that now useless information?
How about two months? That could be the time it takes between learning the kanji and learning the word if you're doing RTK. Is that stupid? If it is, where is the specific line?

So would doing rtk while reading furigana manga and grinding through that deck suffice?
The reason why I said I don't get it is because I'm supposed to just pick up on the readings without having them explained to me in any way shape or form in rtk.
It literally does the opposite of what I did until now, teaching me the kanji, and then how to say it, much later.
How would I, let's say, pick up on the fact that s車 is pronounced as しゃ in 電車 and くるま alone, if I don't even have the basic-est of understandings?
So the point is I learn the character and then when I learn the word 電車 I'd be like "ahh i see it's pronounced sha here"
What if we were talking about a character with a ton more readings than 車? What then?

Enough native/near-native English speakers have used "aren't" in the second person like that to the point where it can be considered grammatically correct in informal language.

They're right in a COLLOQUIAL sense. Obviously you wouldn't use those words in a business meeting, but they have gained enough usage within an English-language context that they can be considered words. That's how language works. There was a point where contractions IN GENERAL like "isn't", "couldn't" etc. weren't considered "correct", but they gained enough usage to the point that they are correct, colloquially.

This applies to both English and Japanese, or any language for that matter. Hell, the word こんにちは was probably considered "incorrect" at one point due to literally meaning "As for this day,..."

Are sentence cards bullshit?
I make all my own cards from anime. When I look at a sentence card I immediately understand the context and the "answer" I'm supposed to think in my head. I realized recently I don't even have to look at the word in the sentence to think of its meaning. I'm correlating meanings with the sentence card itself instead of to the actual word. Christ, don't buy into the Kindle dictionary meme. I bought mine for personal use outside of the dictionary, but I distinctly recall a wide range of people recommending it as a learning tool thanks to the highlight touch dictionary. Let me tell you: Those people are all full of shit. They definitely didn't try reading with it for any extended period of time. The highlight dictionary is a pain in the ass to use and after only 4 ebooks I'm not even bothering with it. The highlighting is finnicky, often snaps to parsed chunks instead of going character by character, and doesn't recognize half the shit obscure enough that you'd want to look them up in the first place. Not to mention that there's naturally no google on this so if it doesn't recognize a word you have no way of following up with an online search. Maybe the dictionary is halfway acceptable if you're literally just starting reading and don't know N5 vocabulary, but for anyone else, you'll spend more time cursing at the Kindle and struggling with the highlighting than actually learning any words. At this point if I want to look up a word I just put the kindle down and type the word up myself to google it. Unbelievable.

It's a lot more convenient for me than anki since I do most of my lookups on it anyway and it's simply a matter of two button presses before It's in a deck. but it seems like the longest interval a card reaches is 2 weeks and then it's considered "learned" and doesn't show up anymore. So with forgetting curve logic that probably gives the word a 40~60 day lifespan in my memory before it might die.

Idk how to feel about this. Part of me says it's good because I never end up drilling a word forever that I rarely actually see during immersion... resulting in way less wasted time in the long run and much less commitment than anki which basically weds you to the word till death.

Also I'm testing myself by writing my reviews out the first 2/3 times, hopefully solidifying the memories better. ひらがな to test the reading, then after checking that, writing the word with lazy kanji.

Also something else about this app, sometimes the version of a word it defaults to is not the version I want to study. For example for that ならう, I saved it for 倣う but it defaulted to hiragana for the card. So for those kinds of words, I stick the version I wanted in the "notes" portion of the card (which appears on the back during reviews) and I force myself to write the kanji from memory.

Those cases are rare so it's not stressful and it exercises my general ability to internalize radicals of a kanji enough to be able to write them from memory.

What makes anki better in your opinion? Customizability (interval length etc)? Longer intervals? More detailed stats?

I'm basically going for the shortest time commitment possible for words. I don't want SRS to take up half my study time, whether it's farming words or studying them.

That's why I like this app. Low-commitment and super fast to make cards since I already use it for all my paper book/manga lookups and just have to press two buttons from a lookup to make it a card. If anki has any real advantage other than longer intervals, I'll go back to that but so far I'm not seeing much of one.

i think anki is better in all possible fields. you can custom it to your liking, you have complete control of the cards. you can delete them if the next interval is above what you judge helpful for you. i would advise otherwise, but you can.
you can add words, sentences, etc with just one click of the mouse (on computer and synch) or with just two clicks if you use a dictionary app with suck a function (i saw quite a few already. i use akebi and it has this option).
and you wouldnt face this issue where you select the word kanjified and it shows in kana only and vise-versa.
of course all i say sums app to a preference in the end, but i strongly advise you towards anki

"To write out the kanji once, by hand, in full, while seeing it. Easy, right? But it still counts.
To produce the meaning of the character in a vague way, i.e. in a way synonymous (though not necessarily equal) to the meaning written on the back. “Backbone”, “spinal column”, “spine”, “back”, “vertebra”, “vertebral column” — all count — even though, as you can see, some of these aren’t exact matches. What matters is being in the ballpark.
Producing the reading is not required…"

It's quite clear that I don't do it exactly the way he lays out in that article. The only part that's lazy is that I let myself look at the kanji to write them when I do reviews.

- I still recite the radical keywords to myself/see them individually as I write
- I still recite the reading to pass the card
- I still have to produce a definition that's close enough to be a synonym

So yeah lol. Criticize what he's written but what I'm doing is different from that in a bunch of ways. Sorry for the confusion, I just posted the source of where I got the idea from bc people asked.

Because you're training your mind to stay present with the current state of your body and mind, you basically have nowhere to run when shit you've been suppressing inevitably bubbles to the surface
If you would usually distract yourself from feelings of mild anxiety with videogames or porn for example, you can't anymore. You have to watch that anxiety arise, watch exactly what the feeling feels like in your body.

I can see why people who are afraid of looking at themselves would avoid it. But its so worth it because once you actually process all that shit, your mind gets lighter and clearer and paying attention without getting distracted gets so much easier.

There is no such thing as something being “boring but effective”. There are no “language-learning vegetables” that taste bad but that you have to eat because they’re good for you; classes have been peddling that lie for years. Of course you may need to go out of your way to learn Japanese, but if the methods you’re using bore you, then those methods need to go.

So, have fun at learning Japanese. Because having fun won’t just be fun, but it will also ensure that you choose to do it again and again (repetition). In fact, you’ll want to do Japanese so much, that you’ll need to pull yourself away from it in order to do things like take showers — and even then, you can hook up some Japanese audio to play while you wash yourself.

When learning Japanese is fun for you, you’ve practically won already, because you’ll readily choose to make it the center of your life.

That isn't thinking, that's awareness. They are very different.

Thinking is purposely generating words and ideas. You're not purposely generating words and ideas during meditation.

Our subconscious minds automatically generate thoughts (and emotions) on their own, constantly in the background of our lives. This is what usually drives people to do and say what they do; they mindlessly obey whatever thought and emotion is loudest in any given moment, often to their detriment (the internet has a lot of assholes who are suffering inside, & this is exactly why they act the way they do. no awareness, just reactivity).

During meditation you are observing those spontaneous thoughts arise as they are, without reacting to them or acting on them, and then returning your attention back to your breath; this trains your skills of steady focus, calm awareness, and emotional stability.

You aren't creating more thoughts or adding more noise to the mind. You are creating space for it to quiet down.

That doesn't change the fact that dopamine (and other "happy chemicals") encourage repetition, which was my point.

Why do you think people say you can't learn nuances of meaning without seeing a word or phrase multiple times?

RTK isn't fun because it's rote memorization of something not usable on it's own. That's different from learning kanji in the context of words from interesting native materials, and knowing you'll be able to read and use them later.

TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) is an input-based approach to teaching language that focuses on the systematic instruction of vocabulary in a highly comprehensible, personalized and contextualized manner. Its framework and philosophy are based not only on classroom-proven strategies, but more importantly, on research in second language acquisition. The method is based on the following underlying principles: In order for language to be acquired, it must be comprehensible (Krashen & Terrell, 1983). Overt grammar instruction and/or correction has little impact on language growth (Krashen, 1998; Gray, 2000; Truscott, 1996). Reading has a profound positive effect on language development (Krashen, 1998, 2004; Rodrigo, 2009). Context is a powerful tool for enhancing SLA — second language acquisition (Fuller, 2002; Fleishman & Roy, 2005; Krashen 2002). It is much easier and more enjoyable to acquire a language than it is to learn a language (Krashen & Terrell, 1983).

Here is proof that TPRS works better than traditional language instruction http://www.crookedtrailslearning.com/blog-2/2017/1/14/what-does-the-data-say-does-tprs-really-work

This method may not be directly adaptable for solitary learners but the implications are clear.

Not intrinsically necessary: grammar instruction, dictionary use, flashcards, suffering, output

Necessary: fun, comprehensible input

Of course it is, it's just reading. You see a word you aren't sure about, you hover over it and glance at either the reading or definition for a second and then you move on to the next sentence. It becomes an automatic process that you don't even notice and it takes zero mental effort. I never even finished a grammar guide because I can't stand anything that's boring and takes effort and I never look anything up for the same reason and yet I can very easily read for hours like this.
