How do I git gud in podd Yumemi kicks my shit in every time

>> No.20853392

>>20852498
she'll do that, especially if she decides to repeatedly use her hardest boss attack. she's also supposed to live forever on her first life.

hard to summarize getting good; podd has a rabbit hole's worth of info. easier to address specific questions if you have them.
here's a start though:
--stuff is more likely to be aimed in your general vicinity. so, with shitstorms, either get near enemy explosions for cover or use macro/misdirection. don't sit at the bottom of the screen and try to micro everything, especially against chiyuri since you'll end up getting trapped.
--i'm usually looking above midscreen whenever precise micro isn't required. tough to react in time to fast bullets otherwise.
--enemy order is set at the start of each round, so if you get slightly behind the ai then you can use your peripheral vision to know what's next. also, the next enemy formation is delayed if the previous one wasn't destroyed.
--focus on killing bosses; use bombs/hypers when things go south. for characters that have lingering charge attacks (ex: kotohime), plant those on top of the boss for max damage. optionally, use a lvl4 spell to save a bomb if it's safe to do so (ex: if the ai gets a full gauge, it will immediately charge a lvl4, so you can keep tabs on this and be ready with yours right after). lvl2s are for scoring and lvl3s are worthless.
--when you get better with chaining, you can keep these going for boss reversals, and sometimes that's easier than killing a boss. 51k spell points summons a boss, then it's +51k for each reversal until a boss dies or leaves (ex: ai summons for 51k, you reverse for 102k, ai reverses for 153k, and so on). this also tells you that if you've seen multiple reversals and then your chain drops, you'll probably have to kill the boss. lvl2s can help with spell points but, since they work (when they work) by sending fireballs and pellets back at you, they can be troublesome for survival.
--you have a large degree of control over the difficulty via chaining/spell points and if/how you use lvl2s. ex: chaining only happens when enemy/fireball explosions cause damage, so at one extreme you can kill chains with shots and charge attacks, and at the other you can cause your spell points to jump by destroying a group of fireballs that was damaged by an explosion. the game shines when you ramp up the intensity, but even then it becomes a matter of balancing scoring with how much you can handle.
--dick around in match mode and watch videos/streams of good players to figure out how to deal with specific spells/boss attacks and to learn which boss attacks are telegraphed (ex: yumemi's cross and aimed attacks).
--there are six frames of invincibility after a charge attack/spell. this is particularly useful in hopping over yumemi's spiral boss attack, which sometimes seems impossible to dodge.
--bombs/hypers don't register during screenfreeze, but they'll register as soon as it's over if x is held down (no need to mash).
--esc fast-forwards through s8/s9 cutscenes and 2x esc skips them.

Got a PCB Normal 1cc with SakuyaA. Had a much easier time getting it compared to the other games I've 1cc'd (HSiFS and EoSD), despite having way less consistency in actually playing it. Had a lot of fun with it though, and might keep with it and try getting 1ccs with other characters, or maybe try for a hard 1cc or something, before moving on to IN. Or maybe just move on to IN.

Sakuya A is really strong in PCB to be honest. She's not DDC Sakuya A, but she's pretty much up there in terms of shot effectiveness due to spread, strong homing, 4 bombs per life, etc. Consider trying Reimu or even Marisa to accurate gauge your ability, the difference between Sakuya and Marisa is quite absurd.

From my experience wine works fine for touhou 8 and 16 (and thus probably all games inbetween), without any noticeable lag or framedrops and even with vpatch and thcrap, provided your wine build has the necessary 32bit dependencies/drivers. btw: only the game exe is different. none of those other files are needed; dat files (and cfg and custom.exe) are just from the untranslated game. any issues running this are probably just issues running the untranslated game or vpatch (like mojibake file names when in japanese locale or when using applocale).
the only quirk i noticed is that the process sometimes stays active for a while after the game is closed, and eosd won't run more than one instance, so you have to kill the process (or wait a minute for it to end on its own) before you can play again.

I was the same as you anon and for the longest time literally only played EoSD because I couldn't beat Flandre and didn't want to progress before I did because I would be unworthy.
Same reasoning as to why I couln't use visible hit box mod or anything.

Flandre walled me so hard it made me put off touhou for years until eventually I was able to revisit it and feel the catharsis seeing Flan's tattered up and defeated face.
PCB and IN's Extra were far easier for me than Flandre, and going into those games after EoSD kinda felt like the equivalent of grinding in the first world so long you nuke everything in the second.
I also probably enjoy those two more than EoSD, but I'm not sure how much of that is just over exposure of the former.
At any rate I just want you to realize the boat that you're in anon.

What's you normal life/bomb count look like when you get to Flandre?
How many spells can you consistently capture?
You only have 3 more cards anon, her second to last one requires knowledge of it to capture so expect to die the first time on it.
If you can make it good and still have a full life leftover by the time you make it to her final spell card it should be fine.
Ripples are only really bad when it gets really close to the end.
Study your replays and make sure you scout out the stage and Patchouli well enough too, though I usually end up bombing through the latter.

Fairly Consistent: Silent Selene, Royal Flare, Lävatein, Four of a Kind, Kagome Kagome (minus the occasional cunt pattern)
Sometimes: Philosopher's Stone, Starbow Break
Rarely: Cranberry Trap (need to find a good path), Maze of Love (have a good strategy and am getting better, just need to get gud after the first spin), Catadioptric (I know about the right-hand side being a safe spot but haven't gotten the hold of it yet)

side note: only lls, eosd, and mof give bad endings on easy (and only lls and eosd end early on easy), so you can dial it back on the other games while you're getting used to shmups and still see good endings.
not that you should settle for easy - you can nail just about any normal with practice once you get past the beginner hurdles - but you can start there if you need to.

Let's say someone who can consistently 1cc normal mode and is making serious attempts at hard. Can you get to that level in a week of playing nothing but touhou or it will take a few weeks, perhaps months?

>> No.20922176

You're not going to be able to consistently 1cc normal in a week, and you can get hard 1ccs before getting being able to consistently 1cc normal. Getting a hard 1cc is certainly doable in a few weeks to a month if you focus entirely on a single game, but most people tend to get normal 1ccs in several games before they try for a hard 1cc. An anon a few threads ago posted about how he had focused on IN exclusively and got a lunatic 1cc in 3 months which is definitely way below average, so if you're really focused on a single game you can climb the difficulty ladder much faster.

it's more important to have quality practice as long as it's at least semi-regular. an hour every other day where you stay focused and put in the hard work in stage/spell practice to improve your skills and shore up your runs is better than day-long marathons where you're just grinding runs. more is usually still better, but looking at in in terms of weeks or months is only giving you part of the picture (and can be an easy way to get discouraged).
>madmen
>Lunatic
heh.
the skill ceiling is ludicrously high. these madmen you speak of have madmen in their own eyes. just keep working and having fun and you'll progress (even if it doesn't feel like it at times), and try to look at those feats for inspiration instead of comparison.

What's your metric for "performance"? Input lag shouldn't be an issue with good controllers.
Well, actually, I guess there's physical delay due to having to move the thumb/wrist vs. just having to press keys with readily positionned fingers. I don't really realize how much this comes into play.

both kb and pad are used by top-level players (stick is also used by some top-level players in other shmups; not sure about toho). there are pros and cons to each but it's tough to say if there's an objective best. if anything, it's probably that one will have a slight edge over the others on any given game, but that edge will be less significant than personal preference/idiosyncrasies and the thousands of hours spent on a given input device.
there should be a much bigger difference between a garbage pad (360 pads are often cited, but i have no idea) and a decent pad than there is between a decent pad and a decent kb. but a kb should be slightly more precise for tapping, so you can try one and see if it feels better. the biggest difference by far though is going to come from getting good.

Way too vague of a complaint. Stage 3 theme is consistently top 10 in votes and Sanae's/Suwako's themes both do well as well.

There's enough contrast between the bullets and the background that this should not be a problem once you're used to the background, which takes a handful of runs at most.
>all the bullets are tiny
Utter exaggeration and not really a flaw even if it were true.
>movement is somehow jerky [...] clipping deaths [...] beyond the worst of EoSD
With vpatch it's just as fluid as 6-9, and without it it's not particularly worse. "Clip deaths" are a joke excuse that really just means "I thought I dodged it but actually didn't and don't want to take responsibility."

Only half joking here, I'm curious because PoDD really didn't strike me as a game it would be sane to play for score. I remember my Lunatic runs were 30% dodging (with lag due to emulator) and 70% hoping the AI doesn't decide to throw the harder patterns too often.
Still, I would be lying if I didn't have fun playing it. Moments where I managed to pull mad ass dodges while bosses are triggered back and forth felt repeatedly fucking sweet, and Yumemi's fight felt like a long, rewarding marathon. But still shit man, I can't really wrap my head around scoring.

aside from general advice from the large post earlier in the thread, it's mostly just familiarity. spells are aimed, so you can learn when to not move (and how to adjust if you had to move when you shouldn't have). ex-crosses (like all/most ex attacks) are slightly more likely to spawn close to you, so if a bunch are incoming then you can preemptively move to the other side of the screen, other factors notwithstanding. cross and aimed boss attacks are telegraphed (watch a video; it'll make sense); you can practice herding boss crosses to learn spacing and timing and how to adjust for other stuff happening onscreen, and if you can't macro her aimed attack (like if a spell is onscreen at the same time), you can try to tap-dodge it since it has small gaps (two of which are immediately left/right of center). for her spiral attack, using post-charge/spell invincibility frames (or bombing) is the only reliable solution if she's low on the screen. her other two attacks are just dodging; the one with pellets usually becomes just bombing unless explosions happen to cancel enough pellets. overall, just try to terminate her boss as quickly as possible. if you're emulating with np2 then you can make a savestate prior to facing her (and prior to chiyuri for that matter) then use that for later practice (vs mode works too but it'll start at a lower spell and boss rank).

she lives the longest (and should live forever on her first life), her spells and ex-crosses can trap you, and most of her boss attacks are hard on their own. she's supposed to humble you, so don't feel too badly when she does. you'll get her with practice. btw, some characters have a better chance at hitting the ai (before the ai is supposed to get hit) than others, so if you need to get that clear then have a go with reimu (or yumemi if you gotta go fast).

>>20950669
>sane to play for score
it isn't, at least not with the common expectation that score should be a basically dead-accurate representation of (scoring) performance. but bear in mind that podd isn't a good shmup when evaluated with the common expectation of a tightly constrained and consistent challenge, so the perceived issues with scoring are largely the same issues with the overall game. if you can evaluate the game in a different light, seeing the fun and reward in it, then scoring will look commensurately better, too.
>I can't really wrap my head around scoring.
it's like rank control, but in the opposite direction: the fun direction. use l2s to ramp up the difficulty as much as you can stand (with some tl;dr details). rng is a thing, but it tends to roughly even out over the course of a run (at least on higher difficulties and not at wr-level). and when it doesn't, well that's a segue:
>Can you do your best to explain to me how is a man led to such a path?
i score as an excuse to push myself in a game i enjoy. if i pushed myself to achieve a score in podd, i think i'd be pushing toward insanity. i still see the numbers, so i admit that i do play tee-ball to an extent, but if i have an intense run with some great dodging then i feel great regardless of score (or zun rating, what a troll).
podd has its flaws, but with fast bullets, constant reading and reactionary dodging, flying around the entire screen, and being able to dial it to 11 in the first half-minute... it's not for everyone, but if it's for you then there's nothing else quite like it.

Thanks anon, I'll try fighting her again with that in mind soon. Once I get through the last few lunatics in HSiFS. I really do appreciate it in advance!

As far as characters go, I've taken a liking to Kotohime. I'll try with Reimu next.

kotohime is a great choice. fast enough to misdirect and macro shitstorms (although tapping is obviously tougher), and shitstorms are less frequent since only one of her boss attacks has reflectable pellets. shouldn't cheese the ai, though, so that's why the game's been making you really work for that clear.

also forgot to mention that you can sometimes luckshit your way through a shitstorm by tap-dodging (some pellets are aimed). probably seems both intuitive and stupid, but it can be a last resort when boxed in by crosses. definitely praying by that point.

I know this isn't gamplay or anything but that the all-in-one touhou launcher finally gets updated. Letting people here know since I find it to be very convenient.

>the perceived issues with scoring are largely the same issues with the overall game
>i score as an excuse to push myself in a game i enjoy. if i pushed myself to achieve a score in podd, i think i'd be pushing toward insanity
I kinda expected you'd say something along those lines and I totally understand. Thanks dude, I appreciate your insight, you're making me want to give PoDD a go again. Maybe I'll try spicing it up with lv2s this time, I only used the max charge before.
Still have to figure out the best way to emulate PC98 on linux though.

anons you will decide for me, should I keep playing on normal and smacking my face into the brick wall that is stage 4 pcb, or should I play on hard to force myself to get better?

>> No.20955099

>>20955015
You should use stage practice on normal for stage 4 and route it/look up routes and learn them.

>> No.20955238

>>20955099
alright, but before I do, is stage 4 the only one that really needs a consistent "route" to deal with all that bullshit.

You may want to practice stage 5 too

Learn streaming man.

I've somewhat learned streaming, but I definitely need to learn how to "break" a stream in order to not get walled and die.

So I went into practice mode, and while I 100% cannot beat stage 5 or 6 outside of practice mode yet, I actually beat them unlike stage 4. why am I so retarded?

Who are you quoting? Also are you talking about PCB? That technique is called Streaming, you use it to deal with a large mass of aimed bullets. Remember it, because it's useful in every game (Start of every Extra, for example)

>> No.20956725

>>20956640
meant to quote myself>>20955469 and yeah PCB, but the thing is I wasn't really streaming, i was just killing everything and they were all dead before I had to move, so it basically diverted 90% of the actual streaming effort
