This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, Japanese video games, and bangers.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

Hey guys,
I'm translating hentai dojin for patreonbux, I'm wondering if you could help me with something.
I translated やるしかない as "Fuck the deer? No." but it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense in that context. I definitely didn't misread any of hiragana, I checked it twice, and my parser is giving me these words too. Is this another of that weird Japanese humor? Maybe I should put it into "I'd rather fuck a deer than you" to make it sound better in English?

Question for anons here: have any of you attempted to use Japanese light novels to learn? I've bought some off Amazon.co.jp, and I can read them on the Kindle PC app, but I'd like to remove the DRM from them so I can add them to my Kindle (which is tied to my Amazon US account), and so I can remove the text copying limit (which I kind of need to look up kanji I don't understand). and by immersion i don't mean that ajatt bullshit i mean watching youtube and playing games and talking to people on IMs or in chatrooms or voicechat and just generally doing things kids and teenagers would do in your native language or english but in the language you're learning instead (except for going to school since that's a cultural thing and you're never going to be japanese)

Playing Swan Song in Japanese, my second untranslated VN after Hanahira. I didn't bother to look up how easy or difficult it would be, just went with one I wanted to play. The beginning was very intimidating, but once I got through the prologue and got a feel for the game's "voice" to some degree I've gotten more of a feel for it. Though it's still slow going in the non-dialogue scenes.

I'm somewhere around low N2 level (passed it ギリギリ) so the grammar hasn't thrown me off much, just a lot of new vocab. I'll never forget the word 瓦礫 after this game.

Because it's mind-numbing as fuck?

And RTK isn't getting kanji of the way. You don't learn to read words with RTK which is what's actually important. You "familiarize" yourself with a keyword associated with that kanji which "might" reflect the "meaning" of a kanji, but which often does not reflect the meaning of a word which uses that kanji. RTK helped me learn Japanese words so it's useful, but you have to factor in the amount of time you're investing. I didn't believe people when they warned me and I had to learn the hard way. I'm sure you'll do the same.

PS this is why RTK evangelists piss me off. This dumb fuck is going to ignore me and keep wasting his time instead of learning Japanese.

Timebox better. If it's taking you 3 hours to do 25 for instance that's twice as long as it should. You need to go in 10-15 minutre bursts. Set new cards to show after reviews, mixing them together will throw your brain off in a few ways. Turn the learn ahead limit to like 3 minutes, set duration steps to 3, 15. Kana is learning the alphabet. "Learning" individual kanji is like if in English your teacher taught you, before anything else, "igh is pronounced 'eye,' and k is sometimes just silent." The way you're trying to separate "kanji learning" and "vocab learning" doesn't even make sense to me. If you learn vocabulary you'll learn the "English meaning" of kanji. Without touching RTK you'll notice why Heisig called 最 "utmost" when you see words like 最初 and 最近.

The only difference is that if you do isolated "kanji learning" you're sacrificing your enjoyment for hypothetical improvements in efficiency. And whether or not that's a good thing will depend on you. But I bet the vast majority of learners wouldn't do it.

He's right before quitting Japanese, like every person who tried AJATT/MIA.

Reason why he will most likely quit Japanese
>no real guidance
He is now at the point where he loses himself in too much Japanese
>mining cards
too time consuming
>he already admits that "all the time" is more like "meh, sometimes I guess"

The only good thing he probably did (only watched a few minutes from his last video) is, that he maybe did RTK.

How this whole fuck up could have been prevented:
>use textbooks until you reach the advanced level
>even if you use textbooks, you can do other stuff in your free time, like watching anime
>NEVER do "ALL" Japanese "ALL" the time
Just use textbooks and other things like anime and manga when you have time

He hasn't used textbooks, so I can already tell you what will happen:
>after maybe a few months he loses his interest in Japanese
>he will more and more forget what he learned
>after a while he will simply have no time to keep going
>he will probably find some excuse like "Japanese was a fun experience, but I have to take a break for work/school/etc."
>He's done with the language

This is the reason why I hate AJATT and MIA. Instead of saying "you will learn Japanese with textbooks until you reach the advanced level", they say "only use Japanese and just mine what you want to know". This is like telling a kid to make your taxes. This won't work. The only good thing about MIA is, that Matt is a huge supporter of RTK (which is mandatory to learn Kanji), but outside of his he went full retard and uses retarded explanations which are not proven to be true.

I think AJATT and MIA is just some bait for retards (or just too naive people), so they waste a lot of time with zero gains.

If you don't want to use textbooks, just quit Japanese. You will realize after years that you have more questions than answers and it will get worse with time. A textbook is like a safe heaven. You have something which will always be your safe space. Even if you have a bad time you can just open your textbooks and remind yourself about things you have learned and move on.

The main problem is that so many people don't want to put in work. They just want to watch anime for five years (which they're doing anyway) and naturally pick up the language.
Which isn't all that bad, people can do whatever they want, but they also want to think that their method is the best. So they lash out at anyone doing any dedicated study, be that grammar, vocabulary, or text books.

i dont think u have to really be that good at japanese u just have to spend some time on hentai games im sure some other ppl will chime in maybe

>> No.20915193

you don't even have to spend that much time on hentai games you just have to read enough different things to pick up on the individual quirks that can differentiate writers and then associate specific collections of quirks with specific writers intuitively

>> No.20915207

its not really as small of a thing as quirks the guy just had kind of a certain voice and it didnt feel like it changed at all between the 2 games which i guess i would say is a shortcoming in terms of authorship but danged if it wasnt pretty sick
