Hey guys,
I'm translating hentai dojin for patreonbux, I'm wondering if you could help me with something.
I translated やるしかない as "Fuck the deer? No." but it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense in that context. I definitely didn't misread any of hiragana, I checked it twice, and my parser is giving me these words too. Is this another of that weird Japanese humor? Maybe I should put it into "I'd rather fuck a deer than you" to make it sound better in English?

ok now i'm at a real keyboard so i can actually argue. everyone i know who has truly gotten good at a second language even starting as a teenager or adult (and i know dozens, learning several languages, not like four people who learned english) has done so after extensive amounts of immersion. even if you do for some reason believe that textbooks are necessary for learning "advanced" grammar they clearly do not actually result in acquisition on their own (i.e. they are at least not sufficient) or else 1) there would be a whole lot more gaikokujin who can speak fluent japanese since it would be a simple process 2) i would probably personally know more (i.e. more than zero) people who got good at another language without doing lots of immersion

Playing Swan Song in Japanese, my second untranslated VN after Hanahira. I didn't bother to look up how easy or difficult it would be, just went with one I wanted to play. The beginning was very intimidating, but once I got through the prologue and got a feel for the game's "voice" to some degree I've gotten more of a feel for it. Though it's still slow going in the non-dialogue scenes.

I'm somewhere around low N2 level (passed it ギリギリ) so the grammar hasn't thrown me off much, just a lot of new vocab. I'll never forget the word 瓦礫 after this game.

You "familiarize" yourself with a keyword associated with that kanji which "might" reflect the "meaning" of a kanji, but which often does not reflect the meaning of a word which uses that kanji. RTK helped me learn Japanese words so it's useful, but you have to factor in the amount of time you're investing. I didn't believe people when they warned me and I had to learn the hard way. The way you're trying to separate "kanji learning" and "vocab learning" doesn't even make sense to me. If you learn vocabulary you'll learn the "English meaning" of kanji. Without touching RTK you'll notice why Heisig called 最 "utmost" when you see words like 最初 and 最近.

Lots of reasons. Biggest is spending same amount of time and effort learning 500 kanji used 3% of the time as learning 500 kanji used 75% of the time before you learn 2000 words that are used 75% of the time.

There's smarter and more efficient ways to approach this, especially if you're watching and reading stuff early.

Here's your unironic advice for the day.

>write down all the kanji you know each day
>write down the recent 50 or so twice more every day
>have a paper with all the words in hiragana
Only takes like 30 minutes. If you're past 1000 (which I'm not) you can skip a chunk of the very simple ones you never miss.
I think this helped me with kanji more than anything, and as a bonus you get that skill which you call "useless"
