Hello everyone. I'm Will. i'm 33, i live in NYC. i have studied Japanese on and off since 2013 or so? i've been inexplicably captivated by it, even after having learned that Japan is actually trash and everyone there is insane and the culture is totally dysfunctional, everyone is an alcoholic, nobody ever fucks, and everyone forces you print out MS Excel documents and fax them, most of the music is terrible, etc. i had a dream in 2013 that i was in Japanese class. so when i woke up, i told my now exgf who happened to work at a language school about it. she got me signed up for discounted classes. i learned a little, but as you all know it didn't really do shit. i found wanikani, i started blowing past everyone in my classes, shocking my teacher with vocab i wasn't supposed to know. but i sucked at speaking and listening still, super slow. i'd come across AJATT but was like fuck that that's too hard. anyway sometime in 2014 i decided Japanese is useless and i should spend my time developing other more practical skills.
in early 2017 i made a resolution to get back at it, started up a new WK account, got to level 7 and then got really sick over the summer and it kinda knocked my habits out. i had other stuff to worry about for a bit. so didn't pick up again until Dec '18. since Dec 7th i went from level 7 to level 18, following a guide for doing a WK level every 7-8 days. was feeling pretty good about myself. i know some vocab, i remember some grammar rules from my classes, i can chain sentences together albeit in pathetic fashion. i got this book, Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication. it made lots of sense to me, i was going to try to build a custom SRS webapp for generating and drilling sentences using the patterns, something where you type whole sentences. i thought i had it all figured out
somehow i came across people on youtube talking about sentence mining, and eventually i found Matt's videos, realized i was bullshitting myself if i thought i was going to get to where i want to be. it was kind of a shitty realization because i had a plan and i was ready to just do my plan but Matt seems to say nothing but things that resonate with me, so i've chosen to admit that i don't know what i'm doing, but Matt does, so i'm gonna do what Matt says

I’m making some “bladerunner” inspired handgun grips and I want to engrave my company name into the grip in Japanese (the name is Replicant Special)

https://forum.kitsunekko.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=522&p=1233#p1181 (properly timed subs but they can still be off by a second or two depending on the release you've downloaded)

Voracious is a video player with built-in anki/mining support that has an option to hide/blur the Jap subtitles, which can be revealed by pressing a hotkey if you hear a phrase/line you want to save. Animelon has Eng and Jap subs for all of its shows, and using an extension like yomichan you can easily mine words (and in turn, sentences) from there. And obviously with the press of a hotkey you can toggle Jap subs in video players like MPC or MPV.

currently I'm doing

The typical LN is somewhere around 100k to 150k characters. Sometimes you go down to 50k, sometimes you go up to 250k, but pretty much everything is in the 100k to 150k range. It just so happens that Hanahira! is almost 50k characters long. If we were to, just for example, use this as a unit of measurement, then the typical LN is around 2 to 3 Hanahira!s long, and the really long ones are up to 5. When you look at "real" novels, they usually hit the 100k to 200k range, or 2 to 4 Hanahira!s. Now, when you look at visual novels, things get interesting. You have a massive range of lengths due to the lack of physical restrictions holding the format down, anywhere from 50k characters to around 2,500,000. This is not for the faint of heart. You're probably not going to see all the text in a single one of the longest VNs, but you can easily have 40 Hanahira!s worth of content in a single contiguous story.

30 kanji a day means about 250-300 reps a day by the time you finish your deck

if you're doing it the proper way (with only the keyword on the front and writing the kanji on paper before clicking on show back) and really good at it, it takes about 10-20 seconds on average to go from card to card

you'll be reaching 1-2 hour long daily reviews for just the kanji in 2 months

it's doable if you have the time and concentration, just like 50 kanji a day

but the real danger comes afterwards

you have this goal in mind to finish the kanji but the real learning comes when all your cards mature

if you go with 10-20 kanji a day, most of your deck will mature before you finish

u still need to have watched at least 3000 hours of eng subbed anime before u can even think about trying to read any manga

this is a rare concession since im militant about the 10k but i think *snorts* reading starts to get easier around 3k

the structures used in anime dialog are mostly simplistic for obvious reasons and don't really reflect the written language that well

give it up dude all us old ninjas still have things to learn before we can approach the world of mareni on even the surface level

this is more reasonable

yes
>does the iOS app have an offline mode?
i don't know what you mean by this
you can use it while offline, but you obviously need a connection to sync once you're done with your cards

i just realized he wrote nasu/mareni LOL quite the divide there one is the napkin scribbles of a cute ass young man with childish misconceptions about the real world because he watched 2 much anime and his mother kept him inside and the other is well a really cool scholarly gentlelad whose prolific prosody parallels the most paramount of renaissance poets and proletarians the likes of us are filthy frankly undeserving of such an aristocratic presence in our primitive time period where beauty has long since perished
