So now that I can read hiragana 9/10 times and kata 3/10 and I know some basic vocab, I'm gonna try moving on. My plan is

>Playing Lingodeer like a game and not taking it seriously, take some notes on some interesting things
>Start replacing the mumble rap in my playlist with jap rap
>Daily Aniki practice and taking notes
>Grinding the radicals after I'm comfortable with kata
>Study Tae Kim while taking notes three times a week for several hours at a time till I'm finished
>Add nhk news web easy to my RSS feed
>Start reading yotsubato with the reading
>Eventually move on to other easy vns, lns and manga
>Move on to more advanced grammar guides?

Anything I should do differently so I don't waste my time? Also recs on japanese rappers? Some neo soul and r&b would be cool too.

Anki's UI is shit, it doesn't have automatic revision timing like Memrise, it only has a basic card answer format instead of Memrise's three different answer formats, and for no reason at all it also demands both my computer and phone be set to the same online time setting for me to be allowed to sync them and use them, which is a personal nuisance as my work clocks use a different time. If there are alternatives to Memrise that offer the same features I'd be happy to know about them but I've never seen Anki's appeal.

>Anything I should do differently so I don't waste my time so I don't waste my time?

You forgot one thing to include and this is
>what do you want to do with Japanese?
Do you want to just watch some Anime, or do you want to play Japanese games, or do you want to be "fluent" in Japanese?

I just assume you want to be fluent in Japanese (which just means you want to understand everything you read/hear).

What you can do (much) better:
>LEARN RTK
I know it sounds retarded, but either you go through the suffering of RTK or you will quit Japanese anyway. Also remember how to use rtk right. First you see the meaning of the Kanji like "black", then you try to remember your story, then you should know the primitives like in this case "computer" and "flames", and only then you should know the Kanji (in this case 黒). NEVER EVER learn from Kanji to its meaning. If in doubt read Heisig's explanation. But it's important to not learn the other way, if you want to know why, just read Heisig's guide.

After you know RTK:
>playing Lingodeer
Not bad, you have to pay for it though, but it's the best learning app right now. Textbooks are still much better though, but as a "game" Lingodeer is pretty good.
>replacing rap
it doesn't hurt, so why not
>using Anki
You have to use Anki for RTK and for new words from textbooks (which are in most cases already pre made without wasting time creating cards) or any other book you read. There is no better way to learn new words.
>grinding radicals
LEARN RTK. You learn all radicals (and fake radicals) and also learn every kanji.
>study Tae Kim
I prefer other textbooks like Genki or nihongo e youkozo. And I would even advice to learn Tobira before reading Tae Kim, because Tae Kim is bitching a lot about textbooks and only if you know textbooks you can easily understand how to improve.
>add nhk news
I thinks it's much better to just use textbooks which are tailored to teach you in the most logical way (all textbooks can be downloaded for free in OP's links anyway).
>move on to vns, Ins and manga
you can always try to read vns. It's even recommended that you not only learn with Anki and textbooks but also do whatever you like between your normal learning sessions. Sure, the first years you will not understand much, but if you really invest time in learning the language you will improve reading vns and other things.
>move on to more advanced grammar
The best thing about textbooks is you learn the most important grammar in the most logical order (sure, Tae Kim will shit on MUH FAKE ORDER if you use "normal" textbooks, but learning grammar is not hard, the hardest part are Kanji anyway).

There is only one group of people who can avoid textbooks and those are people who have a teacher (or really know the language perfectly). Textbooks are mandatory if you really want to understand the language. Also even if you go the
Genki I/II
-> Integrated approach to intermediate Japanese
-> Tobira
-> authentic Japanese progressing from intermediate to advanced
way, you still have to learn after this without textbooks (because after this you know pretty much everything you have to know). After this you won't waste time anymore, because you know how the language works and you know the best and fastest way to progress on your own.

But if you think textbooks are worthless, you will come back in a few months, because you have quit Japanese. Every person who learns without textbooks (or without teacher) is doomed to quit. NO ONE can help you as good as textbooks (at least not for this cheap).

Everything you said (except Anki) is just a bonus to improve your language, but at the start you really need RTK and textbooks to tell you what Japanese even is (Japanese is a language. NEVER learn a language without guide, you will just waste your time).

If you think you can skip textbooks, you would be the first person I have seen (even on the internet) who could learn Japanese without either quitting or stuck in the "smug nihongo ga dekinai" anime girl meme world.
Even Matt is stuck in the never ever world, because he refused to use textbooks. He now blames the "pitch accent" for his failure, but if you see his "skills" you realize, that the problem is not his meme accent, it's because he has trouble with grammar and vocabulary (a consequence of using AJATT and meme+1, because you will learn bad habits without textbooks and you always try to go the easy route with AJATT and any other useless meme
bullshit). This is the way all people end without guide, where textbooks are right now the best.

Don't forget to read Dive X after you're finished with Dive 2. I've never seen it mentioned around here, so I assume lots of people skip it.
It's an omake/fandisc that adds some short stories, along with new gameplay content that lets you control any character in the game in battles, even the last boss.
The most important story being a prequel that tells you what happened between the end of school and up to the beginning of Dive 1. How Kou became soldiers together with Rain, how they traveled around the world chasing the remnants of Drexler co. and finally ended up in the battle where the game starts.

It's perfect for sating that feeling when you're finished with the game and want more.

I only played the first two routes of Baldr Heart, and I just lost interest. I'm planning to play through it again soon, just because Sky is probably my favorite VN and maybe it gets better later. I didn't try Bringer yet.

But Heart was quite a disappointment. What made Sky good was the contrast between the carefree school days and the gritty, dystopian future. Without spoiling more than the first chapter or so, in Heart the protagonist is a soldier that joins a school undercover. All the girls feel like classmates from a generic moe game, since they are all fairly inexperienced or immature schoolgirls. It just doesn't have the weight of Sky, it feels like you're playing around and going on class trips.
Sure, things get serious by the end of a route and there's drama too, but nothing on the level of the constant gloom of the aftermath of Gray Christmas in Sky, for example.
The routes are much shorter too and there's far less character development.

About 10 months ago, I began the process of learning Japanese. It has not been a straight forward process at all, but my biggest regret was wasting the first 3 months of my studies following the advice from this site:

https://nihongoshark.com/learn-kanji/

The TL;DR of this massive article is that the author suggests NOT learning the kun'yomi or on'yomi, stroke order, or even examples containing the kanji. Instead, you learn the English meaning of each word and some clever story to remember each kanji, WITH NO OTHER STUDY AT ALL!

What a massive waste of time. I spent somewhere around 50 days doing this, and at one point, I realized I was supposed to know over a 1000 kanji. Of course, in the article, it suggests doing this before doing ANY OTHER STUDYING! So I hadnt done anything else at all. So I decided to go and peak and find some books in Japanese, and realized that I could not read, or even vaguely understand a single. Fucking. Part. Sure, I recognized a bunch, but what fucking use is that? ESPECIALLY when I figured out that combining kanji can make completely different words. So I spent an hour (or more) a day. For 50 days. Learning absolutely nothing at all.

So I got super burnt out and stuck my toes in the water every once in a while but I never got super committed to anything for fear of wasting massive amounts of time again.

A month ago, I really hopped on the train again and started looking through the Genki textbooks and the guidetojapanese to grammar guide and began learning kanji in its whole (along with Duolingo!), stroke order, usage, examples, kun'yomi, on'yomi, the whole shin dig.

Ive learnt so much more with far less studying and memorization. Lots of it just makes sense and sticks, its barely memorization at all. And Im remembering the kanji better by learning its stroke order! Which the author in that article claims is an awful way to learn! It feels so good being able to actually write the kanji I see, and knowing how to pronounce it when I see it!

I mean, is it mildly convenient that the kanji is kind of familiar to me? I guess. But I should not have been doing what that article advised alone at the very least.</wbr>

>> No.20885544

>>20885535
>I just hope those people who are in the beginning of learning like me and trying to figure things out DO NOT follow this article, like me.
I followed this article for my first 3 months and did not get burnt out at all, now I'm even reading novels and watching variety shows and shit. So experiences differ.

I do agree that stroke order is fucking good, though. People should learn more of that. 戈 is especially precious to me for the ability of the top horizontal line to just penetrate into the strokes of other radicals, like in 我 or 栽. Sweet stuff.

i completely agree with this and there are some infamous individuals who learned japanese and ended up regretting it. i just don't agree with the people who say "the process frustrates the fuck out of you? this ain't for you."

the one aspect of learning i do like is that i look back at material from a few months ago and realize i can understand it much better. but it's pretty much always a pain to move forward.

It is important to look at who is preaching as it gives a good vision into the type of person who practices what you want to do. I find matt and all his followers to be unbearable and seemingly dumb, so maybe only unbearable dumb people benefit from ajatt.

also I am at the point where listening to others is pointless as I have been at it for 2 years already and have made enough practice to understand where to go from here.

What's youtube's stance on videos where you read with the source material visible onscreen?
Like let's play, which is allowed, but let's read instead?

With games you can say watching is not the same as playing, but the same doesn't go for novels/manga.
Once you see the story there's no reason to buy it anymore. Same with some VNs.

You could, but no judge will ever buy that. The reason it's allowed is that companies allow it. That's why when Atlus or Nintendo tell youtubers to fuck off there's nothing they can do but whine about fair use.

And going back to your question, I have no fucking idea what was that supposed to mean either even after reading the whole chapter. Just give up and stop fretting small things.

I'm looking to restart this translation project since the novels are finally out of hiatus. If there is anyone interested in working on this, contact me on #humankind on rizon . Specifically, the project needs translators, but anyone who wants to add something is welcome. Raws can be provided.

I want to use the already existing, but dead, baka-tsuki project to release and edit, but am open to whatever ideas you guys might have.
