I don't play FGO, so I'm curious. Does it have any normal characters like Fate and Tsukihime had? Like people who aren't super special snowflakes that can destroy a planet? One of my biggest issues with post-FSN TM works is that Nasu increasingly got rid of people who weren't power houses. I don't know if FGO is any different but from what I can tell everyone seems super special.

>Rayshift process
1. Once the Subject enters the Coffin, the All Parameter of the Master Candidate will be analyzed and defined
2. Through the use of magic, the candidate will be in a state of a Schrodinger's Cat (Living but Dead Box), making the Master Candidate's life status as "Unknown"
3. Begin Process of Pseudo Spiritron Dismantlement. By using all available energy source in Chaldea, the Coffin calculates and analyzes the Body, the History of the Master Candidate, the relations to Causality and etc. The Coffin will then form an imaginary formula to hold up the candidate's history in place.
4. Using the CHALDEAS Function as a Map of Pan History that can last as much as 100 Years from the present day, the coffin will analyze situation of the era of the Rayshift. And once it is complete, it will engage in Spiritron Projection of the Master Candidate
5. Once the Spirtron of the the Master Candidate have fully completed the Rayshift, the Coffin will block itself from the outside world.
6. The Master will materialize in the era of the Rayshift. Usually falling from the sky.

Chaldeas is currently uncleared, but it is the key factor of Rayshift process and was created with both science + the Animusphere's magecraft (Sion can't even create something like Chaldeas, so new Chaldea can't Rayshift to Lostbelt). The reason why Marisbilly joined the HGW is literally because of Chaldeas too (it was already built in 1990, but couldn't activate due to the lack of budget and fuel until 2004). Anyway, i think it will be mentioned more in further lostbelts, since Kirei/Rasputin suggested that the invasion could only begin after Chaldeas being destroyed.

Nobody of main Chaldea cast is some world ending Mary Sue/Gary Stu. Most of the (now named) staff are like the lowest of Chaldea officers because the sabotage in part 1 killed most of the higher ups leaving the non magical head of medical care as the top ranking officer.

They were just in the background until recently (but get more fleshed out in Other Material) which is fucking waste because it'll be amazing to see how a group of 20s then half of that normalfags work their asses to save the world. Murriere is the one who gets more screentime of the mooks.

Then is the directors:
Olgamarie and Marisbury are definitely weird. Marisbury is so wanked that at this point is impossible for the guy not to be the main enemy mastermind and Beast of the End, because every time a human gets this amount of wank by Nasu is to set them up as Something Big (Zepia and Sion are competent and are DAA in some worlds, Kiara is a Beast, Manaka is also a Beast, etc). They are mostly dead in backstory or started dead.

Gordolf meanwhile is ok-ish walking food joke with good racing skills, so pretty normal.

Rest of staff: Crypters and Lev outed themselves after their intro as enemies, so even if powerful (except Kadoc) they don't count.

Chaldea had two very powerful Servants as 'staff', those are Solomon and Galahad, but both nerfed themselves. One became a normal average human without magic, Roman, and Galahad joined Mashu (until part 1 ending) which means she could not do most of his shit until the end when she gets DETERMINATION. She's massively nerfed now and only power up by a mystic code Ortheanus.

The other Chaldea servants that are actual story characters (and not cameo helpers) are: Da Vinci, Holmes, and Captain (probably Nemo) while Da Vinci is powerful she and Captain are more fit for the tech field than anything battle oriented. Holmes is pretty useless, most of the time his infodumping is mistaken or redherrishly and when he has the 'answer' (outside events and minor shit) he's taken out or doesn't tell it for Reasons.

Ritsuka is a normalfag who doesn't even know a single healing spell, and relies on empathy and negotiation (and some dumb impulsive actions) to win over the Servants on his/her side. The best worst Master and humanity only hope.

Oh and there's Fou, the team pet, who is Beast IV unawaken (also called Primate Murder in other worlds). But he usually doesn't/can't do shit yet. He's every fond of Chaldea though and everyone keeps trashing his nest.

like there's still more fanart and doujins coming out of old one and barely anything of new one unless a LB is out. The players aren't very fond of it. The new potted plant also looks like shit. The Shadow Border setting was at least more bearable than this fake shittier Chaldea.

I find the staff fleshed in stage and manga/Lost room better than whatever Murriere is. I think the problem is new Da Vinci, Sion, Holmes. Gordolf would have been ok, but those are kind of talking heads without substance. Old Da Vinci had lke some gravitas, this one acts like generic genki infodumper without any her her family like affection.

It just looks excessive to have THREE characters dedicated to infodump Nasulore and little else.

That's fair, I suppose. It just... feels kind of lazy to me. Like Nasu basically realized he didn't really have anything to do for these characters so he just killed them off as soon as possible. It feels like somebody going down a checklist, rather than a well crafted attempt at raising the stakes.

The other routes KIND of had that. But almost every character at least got some kind of moment to shine, even if that was often just to get killed afterwards. In HF it's basically just the plot going "Welp, him dead". Made worse by the fact that it's the final route.

>> No.20874313

>>20874303
Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more on this. What use would it be to bring back the same characters, who already had their climactic, character-defining moments, just for the sake of more fight scenes? HF is lengthy enough as it is, all of its time was much better spent on the characters that mattered.

>> No.20874366

>>20874313
It's not so much about bringing back characters who already did a lot of stuff in other routes and giving them a actually satisfying send off. I mean, Caster in Fate and Hercules/Kotohime in UBW also got screwed over hard. But at least their deaths were actually somewhat narratively satisfying. Lancer killing Kotohime is a great moment for his character. As is Gilgamesh obliterating Caster just when she seems to be winning.

Most of the deaths in HF just aren't like that. They just kinda die anticlimactically after having done next to nothing . Like I said, it feels like Nasu was going down a checklist.

>> No.20874378

>>20874366
Both of those examples you listed are characters getting killed off with very little development/screentime, because Nasu favored developing the person who kills them in that specific route (Lancer killing Kotomine, in particular, is his "big moment" for the whole VN). It's the exact same thing he does to build up True Assassin, while creating a greater sense of unease than ever before. There's nothing wrong with it, in fact, one of FSN's greatest strengths is making use of the 3 route structure.
Agree to disagree, I suppose.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. Both characters still got a decent amount of screentime and development in the few scenes they had before they got killed. And again, their deaths in themselves where were very significant and had some actual impact. I actually felt something rather than just "Welp, him dead".

It's not really the same for True Assassin. Who doesn't really get much of a chance to be much of a character anyway. Him killing Caster doesn't leave any impact expect "Wow, that was surprisingly easy".

I mean, obviously. I can certainly understand you're view.

Zouken was just sad, his defeat was not in any way uplifting, he served instead to show just how fucked up the circumstances of the grail war actually are. The true villain was angra mainyu who didn’t really have a will of its own.
Gilgamesh in UBW was good but he really stooped low, kind of hurt his character as a whole.

The defeat of a villain should have a redeeming value to it. Zouken dying just felt so useless. He had died a long time ago and was clinging to life miserably, and he died as a worm slithering in the dirt. There’s no great message to be felt here, we can only look at the situation with disgust and pity zouken for his mad obsession. Angra mainyu not having a will makes it impossible to sympathize with it. Villains should be evil but we must also be able to know why they think the way they do and what compels them. Angra mainyu is just a mindless destruction machine to be put down. Now when you consider that heaven’s feel is supposed to have this general sense of a single couple fighting against the world itself for its happiness, it’s fine that there’s really no strong central antagonist, but I would not call zouken and angra mainyu good villains by any means.

The fight between Gilgamesh and kotomine perfectly encapsulated the central struggle of saber and shirou’s life, and by overcoming those people who were their foils the truth of their beliefs became evident. Gilgamesh and kotomine met them with beliefs of their own as well, but they were crushed simply because they were in the wrong and saber and shirou were in the right. It was a great ending to the route.

I don't really agree with any of that. Zouken's death was his comeuppance for torturing Sakura. The smug way she bites back after ten years of abuse is about as cathartic as it can get, especially when, at that point in time, she's still going to do what he wants anyways. His character is resolved when he has a vision of Justeaze and is reminded of why he wanted the Grail. Whether his death is pitiful or not, I find satisfaction in the newfound clarity.

There are a few different ways to look at Angra Mainyu. One is a straightforward rape-baby in a dysfunctional family. Another barely involves Sakura at all, that being the concept of 'evil'. I find it hard to see All the World's Evils as the World Itself, though. What I like about it is that it's a pure symbol lacking in any personification. It's the epitome of Shirou's goal given shape. After all, a character vs. another character is just one of many different types of conflict.

Kotomine's relationship to Shirou is indirect by comparison. He acts as a foil because his has the opposite goal and world view and basically wants to believe that evil doesn't exist so he can believe in himself. Shirou's final battle in Fate is immature and only scratches the surface of their relationship. That's also important and deliberate, but still incomplete. Gilgamesh is written entirely around the Shirou x Saber romance. There were a few neat lines about the mud, but her change of heart barely had anything to do with Gilgamesh. In fact, I would say the Fate villains were more secondary to the leads than in any other route. It was all about Avalon and the formation of an ego.

To me, wanting a particular thing from a story-telling device is limiting. Why exactly do you say there should be redeeming value or have a great message? Something can be thought-provoking without trying to deliver a specific idea.

>> No.20879051

>>20879001
A villain is fundamentally a story device. They differ from just an antagonist in that the reader is supposed to view them as an unsatisfactory presence. I believe if a work is going to include a clear villain, they should have them represent the antithesis to the main message of the story. Without this, the message becomes diluted and spread out. You bring up good points about zouken, but both zouken and angra mainyu don’t really feel like people as much as very base and primitive evil desires given form. Zouken as a character is ruled by one obsession, but this obsession is something that evolved only from his state of slow decay. Angra mainyu too is not really a villain but rather a product of its environment, and it merely fulfills the function it was given, to be all the world’s evils. They both are lacking in their own intentions and even spirit. Now don’t get me wrong, I think heavens feel is fantastic but only because of these very generalized themes you mentioned. However this is an argument about the best villains, and kotomine and Gilgamesh are both far more compelling in this role for me.

Dude, that reading of Zouken is dead wrong. Even before his soul started to decay, he pursued the Grail for the sake of immortality. He acted out of compassion for humanity and a desire to see them evolve. As he continued to pursue this, time caused him to lose sight of not what, but why. And again, Kotomine is barely even a character until HF and there is still Shinji and Sakura's roles to consider.

More importantly, what do you mean by 'message' and how are you able to distinguish when something is supposed to be seen as an unsatisfactory presence?

His desire was corrupted until it was a desire to seek immortality just out of simple fear. Everything act of evil he does is only a product of that simple desire to live. It’s hardly compelling, and killing him feels more like putting a dying man out of his misery than overcoming a force of evil that stands in your way.

That’s why I said kotomine in fate was good if you had already played fate zero. But even regardless of that, we know well enough that he’s a twisted man who lies and derives pleasure from other’s pain. We don’t know why, but that’s not what Fate is about. The routes message is becoming a hero, and a hero does not need to consider why the evil became evil, only that the evil is something that must be defeated at all costs. You can call it shallow but as a villain kotomine and gilgamesh acted exactly as they needed to. Whether you came in from zero and are looking to see them reach the end of their arcs, or you are going to zero having known what happens in fate, the result is overall a plus to their characters.

I thought the reason why she was able to keep her bloodlust in check was due to Gao sacrificing his spiritual core to stabilize her. Super Computer Qin perfected the base genetic information of Yu and added more things and mystery of the trees (the fusang and the fantasy one) to craft his vessel as the "perfect lifeform". It seems a lot more like the relationship between a genus than a species. She never needed blood and just sort of subsists so long as nature is present around her. In turn she's obviously not as powerful on her own and doesn't seem to have any influence from Crimson Moon.

I finally bought UNIST and man, I feel like I've been missing out by not getting in earlier.
French Bread were clearly so in love with Tsukihime/Melty when they made this, I hope that connection still remains.

Besides the obvious similarities in the setting and some characters, and Sion's entire story, there are other cute little nods. Like in Yuzuriha's story, she talks about how convenient it'd be to hide a sword inside her bamboo broom.
Seriously, fuck the modern state of Type-Moon, things could've been so good if Nasu knew how to balance his content output.

I think you mean, "fuck Nasu for even announcing the Remake in the first place." Really. I don't give a shit that Nasu doesn't want to do anything with Tsukihime anymore - it's probably for the best - but the effective cockblock that he's done on the Tsukiverse? That really pisses me off. If the Remake never got announced, we probably would have at least a few other creators making (official) content in its setting, including French Bread. It would be better for everyone if he just came out tomorrow and said, "Sorry. I don't want to make the Remake anymore because reasons" so everyone could move on. But, nah, he'll let it boil over for 3 more years before he inevitably focuses on it in again in some fashion. Hell, he might even give a release date (which will later be delayed by another 2 years) and maybe by 2024 we'll finally have Tsukihime: GO. Then maybe we can think about another Melty. That is, if we still want to.

the lostbelt arc in FGO is about an "alien" god digging around in the trashcan and throwing shit out of it in order to cuck the FGO human history, creating alternate history pockets that will grow and wage war against each other until only one true trashking remains.

Wrong. It cuts any timelines that don't have branching potential anymore. Those timelines in the Trunk have "average" values since their outcomes aren't biased toward positive or negative valence. Remember what Goetia said in FGO part 1 ? Humanity still have to suffer a lot in Panhuman History.

Lostbelt is also called Losthistory (just Nasu has autism and replaces history with band/belt), it means it's a timely that was removed and marked for pruning for diverging too much from the Average of Accepted History by the Pruning Phenomena System Humanity have. This doesn't mean it's some minor shit about which girl Shirou chooses, nobody gives a fuck about who Shirou dicks. But huge events like "what if a meteorite crashed on Earth and killed most lifeforms and the survivors became something where they ceased to be human?" kind of deal breaker. Those timelines are meant to be culled and burned out, reduced to energy for the system to go on, but seven of them became lostbelts, which basically allowed them and their false prosperity to exist apart and continue from their divergence into the present. These are not Parallel Worlds, they aren't part of them, or Other Worlds (Prototype is classified as this), or items from another branch, they are not meant to continue. They are "Lost Worlds."

Part 2 of FGO is about 7 of these Worlds invading Panhistory and stalemating it to turn the Texture of Tabula Rasa to, after a Grail War Style of Which Lostbelt is the strongest, gets to replace it.

If they do end up making a new Melty Blood, I hope it doesn't just remake the Night of Wallachia storyline.
Since Nasu is unlikely to ever write Tsukihime 2, he should just use some of those concepts in a Melty sequel. Have Merem Solomon, Gransurg Blackmore, and Lorelei as playable characters. Satsujinki instead of Shiki. Aged up versions of the whole cast. Would be a better continuation to the series than another Wallachia/Dust of Osiris game IMO.

It simplifies a lot of stuff from the LN. God's Word had much more characterisation, and the whole story about the school was way darker.
To be honest, it's been some time and I don't remember much of the details, just that I was taken aback by the differences.

I was thinking about this a while ago but you guys claiming that Fate was somehow a fluke and nasu sucks at making decisions doesn't really make sense considering Tsukihime was one of the most famous doujin VNs of its time, if not of all time. And that certainly was due to Nasu's merit as a writer and worldbuilder. Just feels like underestimating his talent out of spite for how much of a cashcow he is.

Yep but some people here took the fact that Nasu thinking that the MC of Fate should be a woman and arthur a man was a good idea (and takeuchi making him change his mind) and extrapolated to the point of claiming that Nasu is just an ideas guy with bad execution, and he just got lucky with Fate, which is just stupid and undermines how much effort he puts into his settings. His writing also improved and it really shows above everything in CCC and Mahoyo. Also, I mean actual writing, as in prose, not plot, which frankly is impossible to know since I really don't get the impression Nasu actually put effort in writing a plot since F/HA, or Mahoyo, which was supposed to have sequels so we'll never know what he was planning in the first place.

Where? I mean, I usually say that Nasu is the kind of artist that needs deadlines and some creative restrictions otherwise he becomes to unfocused and/or nothing gets finished, but I don't think anyone here has ever faulted him for the effort he puts into the settings. Even parts of FGO remain interesting insofar as the lore goes, even if it is undermined by, well, almost everything else.

I actually liked Arc route. But Ciel is insufferable. I'll do her route last just because I don't like not to finish a VN.

Actually doing Akiha route and shit is so comfy. I wish I could just spend the entire VN in the mansion with Akiha, eating breakfast, having some tea in the sitting room and enjoying her sheer smile.

You're just messing yourself up by doing things out of order, also saving the worst for last in a VN will always leave a bad taste in your mouth. If you haven't seen any of the Ciel scenes, keep in mind she's a fairly different character what you see of her in Arc's route. If you don't like Ciel's personality, just imagine she's the antagonist, and if you don't like 60% of it being a retread of Arc's, just skip the recycled scenes.

It will still be kind of weird to jump from Far Side to Near Side after Akiha, but you don't want to do Hisui and Kohaku apart and you don't want to not end on Kohaku.
