I'm fond of Japanese cinema. I always have liked Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kobayashi, Seijun Suzuki, and numerous other classic directors as well as more contemporary filmmakers like Shinya Tsukamoto, Shunji Iwai, Takashi Miike, Masato Harada, and Naomi Kawase.

Names. Being chink I think our surnames are dull. Mine is 孙 (simplified) which means grandson. Nips have wacky ass names like 神川 which means God River and shit like 田中 which means Paddy field Middle, probably means a peasant. The Japanese names are less interesting compared to their surnames though. Dull crap like 花子、桜、太、早人。

Most all traditional things (poetry, art, etc.)
Most of the original features of the landscape (shrines, telephone poles, vending machines, etc.)
Movies and music (of all kinds, pretty much, though I don't follow idols outside of their music)
Customs and manners, grand-scale values for the most part (a lot of which are hard to even put into words)

Otaku stuff I don't know anything about includes Idols, Variety/Game Shows, Tokusatsu/Kaijuu, Trains/Ships/etc., and Martial Arts. Most other otaku stuff I like even if I'm not the most well-versed in it.

I don't know a lot about Japanese philosophy like the Kyoto School, but I'd like to look into it because eastern philosophy, particularly that of Buddhist thinkers, is one of my great interests. I always express my love for Nāgārjuna on /lit/.

I like pretty much all Japanese food I've had that isn't spicy (I'm a pussy who can't handle it... despite growing up in Texas with barbecue and Mexican cuisine). Though a lot of wagashi like anko can be overwhelmingly sweet to me and I've never liked curry, personally.

>>20869704
You have very good taste. Though I've always found Kobayashi underwhelming compared to the other big names you've listed there, if still solid of course. Have you seen the 2013 movie Iya Monogatari? I think you'd like it. Stunning (though subtle and quiet) nature imagery somewhat comparable to Kawase.

Geography, including their unique architecture - past or present. You can't find it anywhere else and it cannot be replicated outside of Japan.

Call me crazy, but there's this strange sense of comfort in Japan. I'm aware it's far from paradise, but knowing it's generally safe to your average commoner, and seeing how clean their environments are is endearing for someone in Northern America where people often don't care for or don't concern themselves with the environment.
